In compariso n with the Olympics and Mt. Rainier, the North Cascades do see far fewer “faces” throughout the year. Or was he indirectly referring to the short season of access for visitors? Regardless, depending on how deeply one wants to venture into the labyrinth of jagged crags, the North Cascades provide something for nearly everyone. And for those who have never visited the park, new discoveries abound. The following hikes and climbs were discovered when we opened one of the many Mountaineers guidebooks found within The Continued on M4 Program Center’s Bookstore. We also cajoled one of our Bellingham Branch climbers, Ken Small, to of- fer a short-list of his favorite North Cascade climbs. For more than 50 years, Mountaineers have been retracing old routes and forging new ones in this little chunk of land, but today that sliver—which lies within the city limits of Index—is up for sale. Not known for sitting idly and contemplating life, members of The Mountaineers’ Seattle Climbing Committee have come together to support another organization’s efforts to bring the possible sale to a halt. “We’re stepping up to stand along- side the Washington Climbers Coalition (WCC) whose members are in the throes of a campaign to raise the $300,000 needed to purchase the land,” stated Moun- taineers Seattle Climbing Commit- tee Chair Gene Yore.
