Around the World in 80 Days

The Most Interesting Setting in the Novel

I have selected the novel entitled ‘Around the World in 80 Days’ written by Jules Verne in order to

answer the question. The novel tells about a gentleman named Phileas Fogg who goes around the world in

80 days with his butler, Jean Passepartout as they embark on journey which is full of adventures and

surprises.

The most interesting setting is the hut where Aouda is imprisoned by the kidnappers. This setting

is the most interesting setting because it is the place where Phileas Fogg’s rescue actions start. First and

foremost, Phileas Fogg waits until it is dark and goes to the hut, he cuts open the hut and rescues Aouda

who looks half-dead. In addition to this, Phileas Fogg quickly runs and climbs onto Kiouni when the bandits

chase after them. Phileas Fogg safely tucks Aouda in one of the howdahs with her still sleeping soundly.

Last but not least, to make sure Aouda is safe, Phileas Fogg offers to take Aouda to Hong Kong, his next

destination.

In conclusion, the most interesting setting in the novel is the hut where Aouda is

imprisoned by the kidnappers. This place is the most interesting place because it is the place where Phileas

Fogg’s rescue actions start.  Finally, the two of them are safe and they get married and live happily ever

after.

The character I Dislike the Most

I have selected the novel entitled ‘Around the World in 80 Days’ written by Jules Verne in order to

answer the question. The novel tells about a gentleman named Phileas Fogg who goes around the world in

80 days with his butler, Jean Passepartout as they embark on journey which is full of adventures and

surprises.

The character I dislike the most in the novel is Detective Fix. Detective Fix is one of the many

detectives who are on the trail of the infamous robber of the Bank of England. I dislike him the most because

he is a judgemental, hypocritical and suspicious person. First and foremost, Detective Fix is a judgemental

person. Since the portrait of the bank robber happens to resemble Fogg’s persona, Detective Fix passes a

judgement that Phileas Fogg is gulty for the robbery without further investigation. In addition to this,

Detective Fix is a hypocritical person. Detective Fix befriends Passepartout with the sole aim of keeping a

tab on Fogg.  Last but not least, Detective Fix is a suspicious person. He suspects that Phileas is the robber

without any concrete proof and he asks Stephenson not to stamp Phileas Fogg’s passport until he gets a

warrant to arrest him.

In conclusion, the character I dislike the most is Detective Fix because he is a judgemental,

hypocritical and suspicious person. His negative traits make readers detest him the most.

MORAL VALUES

Based on the novel “Around The World In Eighty Days” by Jules Verne, themoral value I want to talk about is gratitude. This moral value is shown in Passespartout and Aouda. Passepartout is grateful when Phileas Fogg saves him from going to prison. Fogg has to pay two

Page 14: Jules Verne 80 Days

thousand pounds for his bail. Passespartout is touched by this gesture because he knows that Fogg does not have to pay for his mistakes. That is why he tries so hard to please Phileas Fogg all the time.

Aouda is grateful for things that have been done for her. She appreciates Phileas Fogg for rescuing her from the bandits and being kind to her throughout the trip. Fogg provides a cabin for her and makes sure she is safe. In return she is willing to marry Phileas even though she knows that he has no money.

Passepartout and Aouda are grateful for all the help they have received. We should always be thankful when we receive help from others.

EVENT

Based on the novel  “Around The World In Eighty Days” by Jules Verne, one of the eventsthat I find memorable is when Phileas Fogg and Passepartout rescue Aouda from the bandits.

While travelling through the forest in India, Fogg, Sir Francis, Ali and Passepartout rescue the daughter of a wealthy merchant who is held captive in a hut by the bandits. Even though they do not know her, they go all out to save her.

Another reason why this event is memorable is how the four men manage to get Aouda out of the hut. They work together to break the wall of the hut and escape from the bandits.

The above event is very memorable to me because they went through a lot of trouble to save a stranger.

Characters

Compare and contrast between two characters.

Based on the novel “Around the World in Eighty Days” by Jules Verne. The characters that I choose for comparison are Passepartout and Phileas Fogg. Passepartout was a comical character. He provided entertainment at many occasions. He lightened the atmosphere of the tensed journey with his crazy behavior, his clumsiness and his general good nature. Phileas appeared to be calm and methodical person as there was a system for everything in his house. Passepartout was full of his antics as he had been an acrobat before. His small role as a long-nosed acrobat in Japanese clothes was a very stark compared to Phileas’s serious character. Passepartout was a happy-go-lucky, naïve man who got himself into lots of blunder.  Passepartout’s naïve and simple characteristics is also a contrast to Phileas Fogg’s intelligence and wit. While on their way to America, a herd of buffaloes found its way onto the tracks. The train stopped as the engineer waited patiently for them to pass. The impatient Passepartout could not sit still. But Phileas was very cool and managed the situation without any panic. Passepartout got himself into much trouble with the priests when he was attracted to a temple in Bombay. He did not know that foreigners were not allowed in temples. Phileas Fogg was a brilliant man packed with knowledge. He planned the schedule and had everything in order. He was resourceful and this was evident when he burned the parts of ship in order to get it moving because there was no more coal. Phileas Fogg and Passepartout made an unforgettable pair to us in the novel Around the World in 80 days.

Page 18: Jules Verne 80 Days

Write about a character that you sympathies with. Support your answer with evidence from the text.

Based on the novel ‘Around The World in Eighty Days’ by Jules Verne a character that I sympathies with is Passepartout.

Passepartout was naïve to a certain extent and tended to get carried away at several occasions. Passepartout entered the Indian temple illegally. He did not know that foreigners were forbidden from entering the temple. The poor Passepartout was caught and brought to the court. This is one dirty tactics by Detective Fix to nab Phileas in India. This incident made Passepartout to be restless and he thought that he had caused his master to be delayed in his journey.

I sympathy with Passepartout for when he refused to keep Phileas Fogg in Hong Kong. Fix got his man to knock him on the head and he fell. Fix then left him unconscious in that restaurant. Three hours later, he woke up, still feeling dizzy. Barely able to stand, he pulled himself up and stumbled along the ship. Two members of the crew pitied him and carried him to his cabin. The next day when he woke up, it was already mid-day. He could not find either his master and Aouda on board the ship.

Then, he remembered. His master might have been missed the boat. Passepartout was now on his way to Japan without a penny in his pocket. He was such a pitiful soul. When the boat docked in Yokohama, he off the ship and

Page 19: Jules Verne 80 Days

onto the shore. He walked the streets of the Japanese city. He had nothing. He was hungry but he had no money.

The next morning, he was so hungry that he thought of selling his watch to buy some food. He then decided not to as the watch was very special to him. So, he traded his clothes to get some food and Japanese attire. He ate his rice and chicken very quickly as he was dead hungry. The pitiful Passepartout thought of a way to look for his master who might already be in America. He joined an acrobatic troupe heading to America. He was offered the role of Long Nose in the human pyramid. Later, he was reunited with his monsieur and Aouda.

Passepartout showed loyalty to his master and made sure that his master was safe and sound. This is especially so when their train was attacked by outlaws. The train had to be stopped or it would crash. Phileas started to rush towards the front of the train and tried to stop it but his loyal butler stopped him from doing so. Instead, he went to have a look himself, making sure that his master was safe. He was willing to take risks in order to save his master.

Page 20: Jules Verne 80 Days

I sympathy with him because as he faced many problems throughout his journey with his master.

Write about a character who is kind in the novel. Support your answer with evidences from the text.

A character who is kind in the novel ‘Around the World in Eighty Days’ by Jules Verne is Phileas Fogg.

Page 21: Jules Verne 80 Days

He seemed calm, emotionless and mechanical person. In actual fact, Phileas Fogg had a heart that was large and kind. There are many instances to prove such.

On their way to Allahabad, Phileas Fogg and his companions heard loud voices coming through the woods. The clanging of instruments and loud voices come closer and closer. They saw a group of men dressed in costumes pulling a cart with a statue on it. Men wearing long robes dancing around the statue. Another group of men was pulling a young, beautiful woman , Aouda behind them. Seeing the pitiful woman, Phileas decided to help since he had 12 hours to spare. The other agreed to help them. He took risks and challenges in battle of saving the Aouda.

Phileas had a heart of germ. He pardoned Passepartout although Passepartout had did many blunders along the journey which delayed his journey around the world. Being kind, Phileas did not want Passepartout to stay in jail for illegally entering a temple in Bombay. He did not blame or reprimand Passepartout in any way. That shows how magnanimous he was. Instead Passepartout felt bad his master spent money on mistakes that he made. Fix arrested Phileas in Liverpool. He was put in

Page 22: Jules Verne 80 Days

jail and as a result the time lost cost him to lose the wager. He did not blame anybody for this ruin, not even Passepartout for he did not tell him about the detective although he knew about it. Based on the above given evidences, it is clear that Phileas Fogg is the most kind person in the novel.

Write about a character who you detest the most in the novel. Give evidences to support your answer. *detest=demise= hate= dislike = benciWrite about an antagonist of the novel that you have read. Give evidences to support your answer. I dislike Detective Fix. He was one of the detectives who was trying to catch the man who had robbed the Bank Of England. He was opinionated, he was sure that Phileas Fogg was the bank robber and stubbornly refused to accept any other point of view. Fix followed Phileas all over the world just to arrest him. He decided to follow Phileas Fogg until ‘the bitter end’. He was persistent to do something despite facing all the difficulties. I would describe him as a ruthless person too. Detective Fix, as a sly person, he told Passepartout lies about himself and made friends with him to get more information about Phileas. Fix used dirty tactics to disguise his true identity as a

Page 23: Jules Verne 80 Days

London Detective.Fix got Passepartout arrested for illegally entering an indian temple just so that he could delay Phileas until the arrest warrant arrived. His suspicions were based on nothing more than Phileas getting his passport stamped and a conversation with his butler, Passepartout.Fix followed Phileas all over the world and tried his best to delay his journey. In Yokohama, Japan, Detective Fix had someone hit Passepartout on the head when Passepartout refused to cooperate with him to hide the schedule detail to Yokohama, Japan. Passepartout was unconscious at the restaurant. Phileas missed the steamer, Carnatic. This showed his cunning attitude of Detective Fix.Finally, Fix was proved wrong when the real suspect was arrested in England. Phileas Fogg punched Fix on his nose and knocked him down. Fix knew that he had received what he deserved.

Write about a character who faces the most hardship in the novel. Give evidences to support your answer. The character who faces the most hardship in the novel ‘Around the World in 80 days’ is Phileas Fogg.Phileas showed great determination and never give up despite the odds. He hired boats, rode on an elephant, took over a ship and even hired a train in order to solve all the obstacles. He risked his life on a train by crossing a badly-damaged bridge and travelled in a sled in a freezing cold night. He journeyed through rough weather, awful storms, wicked waves, incomplete railroads and outlaws attacks.Phileas Fogg also risked his life to save Aouda who was kidnapped by bandits. He with his travelling companion managed to save Aouda after a great battle with the bandits. Helping other in need is a good and noble deed. In Hong Kong, he missed Carnatic. Fix hit Passepartout on his head.

Page 24: Jules Verne 80 Days

Passepartout fainted. This incident made Phileas did not know about his schedule of his steamer, Carnatic to Yokohama, Japan. Phileas had to burn a hole in his pocket by hiring a boat to Shanghai so that he could catch Carnatic in time and headed to Yokohama, Japan.Phileas had to hire Henrietta to Liverpool. He had to sail ththe Atlantic Ocean, a dangerous sea with bad weather. The crew of the ship ran out of coal. Phileas bought the ship and instructed the crew to burn parts of the ship to keep it going. Fix put Phileas behind bars once Phileas had stepped onto British soil. He was not emotional when he stucked in jail. He was released by Fix when the real robber had been caught in London. He had to hire a special train to England. However, he arrived 5 minutes late and he thought that he had lost the wager.Phileas also was a kind-hearted man. Phileas had a heart of gem. Instead, Phileas spent money on mistakes that Passepartout made. Pity Phileas.

Write about an event which keeps you in suspense. Support your answer with evidences from the novel. The event which keeps me in suspense in the novel is when the bridge was out while Phileas Fogg and his companions were travelling to New York. As the train approached the Rocky Mountains, suddenly a loud whistle was sounded and the train came to a complete stop. A red light had stopped the train just before a bridge. The signal man told them that the bridge was out of order and very dangerous to pass through it.A passenger called Colonel Proctor suggested pushing the train at full speed and they might just cross before the bridge fell apart completely. In fact, everyone was worried about the bridge collapsing first but nobody dared to say a word. Everyone climbed back on board. The train was on its way again but this time at full speed. The train moved faster and faster. The scene was one of suspense.- how fast could then train move? Would the bridge collapse? What would happen to the train as it was moving so fast that it felt like it might not even be on top of the tracks?

Page 25: Jules Verne 80 Days

The moment of suspense, the train passed over the bridge! It took only a second as the train leaped from one bank of the river to the other. Just seconds after the train crossed that terrible bridge, there was a loud crash. The bridge fell with a crash into the water below.

Write down all the lessons that you have learnt from Phileas Fogg. Give evidences to support your answer. {This sample answer consists all the possible answers. In exam, students MUST GIVE at least 3 points}I have learnt a lot of good values from Phileas Fogg, the main character of this novel, Around the World in 80days.For Phileas Fogg, there was a system for everything. His clothes and shoes were numbered according to when they were worn, whether summer or fall. He had prepared a schedule for his butler to do all his chores. He fired his butler, James Forster for bringing him shaving water that was two degrees too cold. I learnt about being disciplined and punctual in life is very important. Phileas Fogg was being modest when he introduced himself, his butler, Passepartout and his friend, Sir Francis to Aouda. This trait was again highlighted when he told Aouda that it was their pleasure to save her from bandits. He had been very modest although he was a wealthy man.Phileas showed great determination and never give up despite the odds. He hired boats, rode on an elephant, took over a ship and even hired a train in order to solve all the obstacles. He risked his life on a train by crossing a badly-damaged bridge and travelled in a sled in a freezing cold night. He journeyed through rough weather, awful storms, wicked waves, incomplete railroads and outlaws attacks. I learnt that we must face all the problems in our life patiently and never run away from odds.Phileas Fogg also risked his life with the help of other travelling companions to save Aouda who was kidnapped by bandits.
