Or Why do I eel so distracted</p><p>here and the service is so lengthy?</p><p>You are not alone. As a psychothera-</p><p>pist and a Jewish author, Ive heard rom</p><p>thousands o diverse Jews (rom the very</p><p>religious to the not-very religious to the</p><p>extremely not religious) who told me they</p><p>elt bored or dgety at times during High</p><p>Holiday services in previous years.</p><p>Fortunately, there are some highly</p><p>eective ways to connect more deeply</p><p>with the proound themes and lie-chang-</p><p>ing insights that can be ound in the Rosh</p><p>Hashanah and Yom Kippur services o</p><p>nearly every congregation. Here are a ew</p><p>easy-to-utilize steps on how to make these</p><p>careully choreographed Days o Awe</p><p>more meaningul to you or a member o</p><p>your amily who eels bored or discon-</p><p>nected rom High Holiday gatherings:</p><p> Let the music move you. Te services</p><p>will come alive or you i you allow the</p><p>beautiul melodies, the talented voices,</p><p>and the intense sounds o the shoar to</p><p>take you to a place o proound waking</p><p>up. Rather than ocusing on what people</p><p>are wearing or whose kids are misbehav-</p><p>ing, or even whether the rabbis sermon</p><p>is perect, let yoursel be lied up by the</p><p>soulul melodies that connect each o uswith hundreds o years o passionate and</p><p> vulnerable Jews who have poured out</p><p>their eelings o longing, sadness, joy, and</p><p>gratitude at similar services during pleas-</p><p>ant years and tragic years. As you listen</p><p>closely to the music and the call o the</p><p>shoar, imagine yoursel surrounded by</p><p>many generations o ancestors asking you</p><p>lovingly, Nu, how are you? How is your</p><p>beautiul soul navigating this complicated</p><p>world that is so challenging?</p><p> Do some personal preparation. During</p><p>the days leading up to Rosh Hashanah, pick</p><p>a phrase or a theme rom the High Holiday</p><p>prayer book that makes you curious about</p><p>the mysteries o lie or helps your soul nd</p><p>its true purpose o doing some good in large</p><p>or small ways. Rather than getting bent out</p><p>o shape by some harsh phrase rom the</p><p>prayer book you dont like, choose instead</p><p>to ocus on phrases and themes that you</p><p>select consciously to inspire and motivate</p><p>you in the days and weeks surrounding the</p><p>High Holidays. For example, what is a vow</p><p>you made in the past year (to yoursel, to</p><p>a loved one, or to someone at work) and</p><p>that you now realize you havent ully kept?</p><p>What will it take or you to change that vow</p><p>and create something new that is much</p><p>more likely to be kept? Take charge o your breathing and your</p><p>ocus. Ive ound in my own lie and in</p><p>counseling many dierent types o Jewish</p><p>women and men that one o the best ways</p><p>to enjoy the High Holiday services and get</p><p>more insights rom them is i you notice</p><p>your breathing whenever possible during</p><p>the lengthy services. Silently say Hineni,</p><p>here I am, a powerul ocusing phrase</p><p>that you can utilize whenever you eel dis-</p><p>tracted, tense, or rustrated. I you remem-</p><p>ber to breathe smoothly and ully as you</p><p>open up your creative mind with these</p><p>words, you may be surprised at how you</p><p>start to become less stressed and more</p><p>centered, not only at High Holiday ser-</p><p>vices but throughout the rest o the year.</p><p> Let your heart speak your deepest truth.</p><p>At various points during the Rosh Hasha-</p><p>nah and Yom Kippur services, you will</p><p>be given the opportunity to say out loud</p><p>or to speak silently the truths, concerns,</p><p>and aspirations you carry in your heart.</p><p>In addition, you are being encouraged to</p><p>speak these truths to the mysterious Source</p><p>o Lie that is beyond human comprehen-</p><p>sion. Yet we eel especially close to th</p><p>mysterious One at these holiday gathe</p><p>ings. Whether you are a strong believer </p><p>a loving Presence or you wrestle with mandoubts, these Rosh Hashanah and Yo</p><p>Kippur services ask you to dig deeply in</p><p>your own heart and admit honestly, T</p><p>is where I have missed the mark, Tis </p><p>what I notice and appreciate about the gi</p><p>in my lie, and Tis is what I am longin</p><p>to improve in the coming year. You w</p><p>probably nd that having the chance </p><p>slow down and connect with the still, sma</p><p>voice within as you express these prooun</p><p>truths is time well spent.</p><p> Look or opportunities or prog</p><p>ress, not perection. One o the beaut</p><p>ul things about Jewish holidays such </p><p>Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur is th</p><p>in Judaism we always have the chance </p><p>wake up anew, to ask or guidance, and </p><p>improve how we deal with our toughe</p><p>personal, amily, and work-related cha</p><p>lenges. But we are not being asked to b</p><p>perect, nor are we condemned or bein</p><p>human and having our struggles. For the</p><p>last 30 of those years, I have been known</p><p>as the author ofWhen Bad Things Happen</p><p>to Good People, a book that suggested a</p><p>different understanding of Gods role in</p><p>all the misfortunes that occur in our world.Between those two roles, I have had</p><p>countless conversations with people who</p><p>had reasons to be angry at God, some</p><p> because of tragedies and disappoint-</p><p>ments in their own lives, some because</p><p>of the Holocaust, some because of fam-</p><p>ines, oods or genocide in other parts of</p><p>the world. I have spoken to any number of</p><p>people who have stopped believing in God</p><p>altogether because of all the terrible things</p><p>that keep happening (its interesting how</p><p>angry people get at God for not existing),</p><p>and others who still believe in Him but</p><p>refuse to pray to him.</p><p>In the opening chapters of the book of</p><p>Deuteronomy, last of the ve books of the</p><p>Torah and the one we read in synagogue</p><p>during the weeks before the High Holy</p><p>Days, Moses does something completely</p><p>out of character. He expresses anger at</p><p>God. He complains that God has treated</p><p>him unfairly.</p><p>Moses has spent his entire life, at con-</p><p>siderable personal sacrice, bringing the</p><p>word of God to the Israelites. He has</p><p>endured their complaints and their devi-</p><p>ations from Gods ways, and instead of</p><p>rewarding him for his efforts, God has</p><p>decreed that the people who have made his</p><p>Is it sin to b nry t god?</p><p>rabbi haroLd S. Ba few years ago, I heard a lecture by Pr</p><p>fessor Aviva Zornberg of Jerusalem o</p><p>the subject of Moses anger at God. Sh</p><p>suggests that Moses did that deliberate</p><p>as a way of giving the Israelites permi</p><p>sion to vent their anger at God, which the</p><p>promptly do.</p><p>God must hate us to have made u</p><p>wander in this desert for 40 years. If Go</p><p>loved us, He would have let us rema</p><p>in Egypt and sent the Egyptians into th</p><p>desert.</p><p>Zornberg goes on to note that, immed</p><p>ately after the people express their ang</p><p>toward God, we nd something in th</p><p>Torah that we have never seen befor</p><p>Hear O Israel, the Lord is your God, th</p><p>Lord alone. And you shall love the Lo</p><p>your God withall your heart.</p><p>We had previously been commande</p><p>to obey God, to revere and honor God, </p><p>walk in His ways, but never before to lov</p><p>Him. Zornbergs explanation: You cann</p><p>truly love someone with all your heart </p><p>you are afraid to be angry at him. Ang</p><p>need not terminate a relationship. It nee</p><p>not shatter a relationship. Anger, disap</p><p>pointment are a part of an honest, health</p><p>relationship.</p><p>For years, I wondered why the kaddis</p><p>a hymn of praise to God with no mentio</p><p>of death or loss, was the prayer we aske</p><p>mourners to recite at services. I have com</p><p>to understand that asking the one person </p><p>the congregation with the most reason </p><p>be angry at God for what has happened </p><p>his or her life to publicly praise God is n</p><p>to demand an act of hypocrisy. It is to re</p><p>ognize that a prayerful relationship to Go</p><p>remains even at a time of pain and anger</p><p>Ultimately I would like to think that th</p><p>mourner will come to see God not as th</p><p>source of his grief but as the source of h</p><p>resilience in the face of grief and the insp</p><p>ration behind the efforts of friends an</p><p>neighbors to comfort him.</p><p>I would like to believe that God is n</p><p>offended by our righteous anger at th</p><p>worlds unfairness, nor does He need o</p><p>attery. Just as in our personal lives, the</p><p>are few moments more reassuring than th</p><p>experience of getting angry at someone w</p><p>care about and discovering that our love </p><p>genuine enough to survive the anger. On one hand,I very much look orward to</p><p>the season o holiday meals,</p><p>get-togethers and keeping</p><p>all the amily traditions. On</p><p>the other hand I fnd all the</p><p>talk o soul-searching a bit</p><p>prickly. I am not the most</p><p>spiritual o people and am</p><p>rankly not keen on all the talk o peni-</p><p>tence. I dont think I am a bad person; I</p><p> just cant get into the be-a-better-per-</p><p>son sermons though o course, being</p><p>a better person does resonate with me </p><p>who doesnt want to be better?</p><p>It sounds like you are in need o a</p><p>more-hands-on, less-touchy-eely kind</p><p>o navigation or the demands o the New</p><p>Year.
