When I think of how the Holy Spirit works in the life of a Christian, I’m always reminded of Galatians 5:22,23. These verses list the various traits, or fruit, of the Spirit—characteristics that any person who calls himself a Christian strives for in life.

Think about fruit and the way it is cultivated, nurtured and cared for in order for it to grow and become sweet, juicy and tasty to eat. It is much like that in the life of a Christian. The Holy Spirit cultivates His fruit in us so we can grow to be strong, sweet, productive and useful in the kingdom of God.

Here’s another way to look at it: We are the temple, or house, of the Holy Spirit. He comes to live in us. Then He begins to “remodel the house.” And He makes it more beautiful and livable than we could ever do on our

DEARFRIENDS,

STRAIGHT FROM THE HEART

own. You see, only He has the limitless power, knowledge and resources to do something like this. And let’s face it, some of our “houses” need a lot of work!

But, He does it just because He loves us and wants His best for us. All He wants is to empower us to live fruitful lives and ultimately, to be a blessing in the lives of others as well. Our part is simply to receive His love and then let it ow through us.

Sometimes that seems to be the most dif cult thing for some of us—receiving God’s love. But it really is the simple key to living a fruitful, enjoyable, productive life in the Spirit. We’ll talk more about this in the pages that follow.

Receive the Holy Spirit and let the remodeling begin!

Mandisa’s amazing journey from American Idol season 5 to today.

F O L LOW R E G I ST E R

We’re not sure which shines brighter: Mandisa’s rangeless vocals or her relentless spirit to overcome and en-courage. If you’ve been waiting to party with “Disa,” you’ll love to hear what she has to say in preparation for Joyce’s 30th Anniversary Women’s Conference.

Q: You’ve inspired a lot of people to get in shape physically. What inspired you?

A: I have battled my weight my entire life, some of it on the American Idol stage before millions of people. I’ve gained and lost, gained and lost. When I nally let God into the hurtful places in my life that caused me to turn to food…that brought in a ood of freedom I’d never experienced before. This time it’s not about looking

a certain way or getting to a certain number. It’s about living the abundant life God has called me to.

Q: As women, we like to feel like we have it all together. What would you say to someone who feels that pressure?

A: When you nally “get it all together” you’ll be in heaven. My entire Christian life I thought I had to have it all together. Once I real-ized that the only person who had it all together died so that I didn’t have to, it allowed me to be “real.” As Christians, I believe when we stop trying to look perfect, people will take their eyes off us and our false pretenses and put their eyes on the only perfect Man who ever was.

Q: This year’s women’s conference is all about hope. What does hope mean to you?

A: It’s not simply a feeling that what we desire is possible. God has been showing me it’s more about that which He desires. In the end, my Father will make all things work together for my good because I love Him and am called according to His purpose.

Mandisa will be performing a special Friday night concert at this year’s Love Life Women’s Conference. Ladies, come and join us for some dynamic praise and worship!

Kari shares how God sustains us by His grace.

F O L LOW R E G I ST E R

If you need God to move in your life, to prove Himself faithful in your current situation, Kari Jobe wants to encourage you that He’s with you, and He absolutely will. She’s a natural worshiper, passionate about leading others into God’s presence—where hearts are transformed.

Q: Tell us the story behind one of the songs you’ll share at this year’s Women’s Conference.

A: The ballad “You Are for Me” came out of a season of my life that was really trying and hard, and I didn’t understand why it had to be that way. The scriptures that kept coming to mind were Hebrews 13:5, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you,” and Romans 8:31, “If God is for

us, who can be against us,” and they turned into a song.

Q: Life isn’t always predictable. How has God helped you press through something unexpected?

A: De nitely through His Word. I nd that every time I’m going through something, the Lord will bring up a scripture in my spirit. Or as I’m reading, He encourages me.

Q: Is there something God has put on your heart to share speci cally with women?

A: I think as women, we consistently face situations that are dif cult both emotionally and physically, but God can help us through those times if we draw

near to Him (James 4:8). It helps us face the next battle that seems too big.

Q: This year’s women’s conference is all about hope. What does hope mean to you?

A: Hope, to me, is a promise from God for His help and strength to live out our lives. We don’t have to live life alone and with ailments like the world experi-ences...but instead we have salvation and joy from God to help us live each day through His strength, and not our own.

We’re so excited to have Kari at this year’s Love Life Women’s Conference, and we pray all of you ladies will come lled with anticipation for what God has to share with you!

Jesus is the best friend you will ever have. He never rejects or condemns you. Nor does He love you more on the days you behave well and less on the days you behave badly. He simply loves you!

The Bible teaches us plainly that God wants you to have and enjoy abundant life in Christ—and getting into agreement with Him will open up a whole new world to you. Being a born-again Christian is a new way of living!

If you’re a brand-new believer, we want to encourage your faith by sending you Joyce’s book, “A New Way of Living.” Call us at (636) 349-0303 today to receive this gift free of charge.

SALVATION

IIf you’ve asked Jesus to come into your heart and you’ve received His free gift of salvation, you have made the most important decision of your life.

You have become a new creature. Old things have passed away and all things are brand-new (see 2 Corinthians 5:17). The fact is, we have been given a brand-new start. Yet it remains a challenge for many Christians to believe their sins have been completely washed away.

Have you ever felt that way? If so, I want you to get a revelation through His Word today.

Second Corinthians 5:21 says, For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ (NLT).

As believers, we don’t have to be afraid that God is angry or displeased with us. We can stand before Him with all con dence, knowing that we are loved and accepted by Father God.

Donʼt Be So Hard on Yourself Nobody’s perfect; we all make mistakes. So it is very important for us to under-stand that our right standing with God isn’t based on our performance—it is based on our relationship with Jesus.

I encourage you to make it your practice to receive God’s mercy on a daily basis. Get up every day and do the best you can for the glory of God. And then at the end of each day, ask God to forgive you for all your sins and mistakes so you can get a good night’s sleep.

Don’t worry about making mistakes. Remember, you never have to try and earn God’s love. He already loves you as much as He ever will, and His love for you is perfect.

God Is for You, and He s̓ Always with YouJohn 6:37 says, All whom My Father gives (entrusts) to Me will come to Me; and the one who comes to Me I will most certainly not cast out I will never, no never, reject one of them who comes to Me.

...And the one fruit you Absolutely, positively cAn’t live without!

by Joyce Meyer

But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things! (Galatians 5:22-23 NLT)

You may not know it, but when you gave your life to Jesus, all the fruit of the Spirit were planted inside you in seed form. Through the Spirit you can experience joy and peace in every circumstance, no matter how difficult or painful. You may not be a naturally patient person, but you can call on the Spirit within to produce patience. If you’re battling unhealthy behaviors, like an addiction or some kind of bad habit, the Holy Spirit can give you the ability to resist the devil and make healthy choices.

BBefore I first listened to Joyce’s teaching on the fruit of the Spirit, I confess I didn’t really understand how the fruit worked. I assumed it was all about willpower. If I didn’t have peace or patience, it must be because I wasn’t trying hard enough. It never occurred to me to ask for God’s help.

It might have had to do with how I was raised. Though I grew up in a Christian home, my mother was the poster child for the self-made woman—the oldest of ten who grew up in a West Virginia coalmining town during the Great Depression. She escaped at eighteen, married a mean man, went to work, divorced, remarried and eventually became one of the first female Chamber of Commerce executives in the country. She was a dynamo who loved to say, “I’m a survivor.” That was her battle cry and badge of honor.

It made perfect sense that I would follow her template. Clawing my solitary way up the mountain of life’s challenges, marching under my own steam through exhaustion and disappointment—just so I could proclaim that I too was a survivor. As if surviving is as good as it can possibly get.

But listening to Joyce’s teaching about her own transfor-mation from humorless survivor to healed and happy child of God gave me a new perspective on “survivor syndrome.” I understand now that God wants much more for us than mere survival. It’s not His will that we just barely make the finish line. He wants us to sail past it with hope, exuberance and energy to burn. Even more important, He wants our acknowledgement that we get nowhere on our own steam. It’s all Him, all the time.

The apostle Paul put it this way:

When we were controlled by our old nature, sinful desires were at work within us, and the law aroused these evil desires that produced a harvest of sinful deeds, resulting in death. But now we have been released from the law, for we died to it and are no longer captive to its power. Now we can serve God, not in the old way of obeying the letter of the law, but in the new way of living in the Spirit.(Romans 7:5,6 NLT)

On your own, it would be impossible. But when you operate in the Spirit, you have a supernatural ability to overcome. What a precious gift! And the more you draw near to God, praying and reflecting on His Word, the more you will experience the fruit of the Spirit in your life. But where should you start?

It’s All About love, love And love All the fruit of the Spirit are held in place by love. Jesus said that loving God and other people is the most impor-tant commandment. “You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.” He added, “A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself’”(Matthew 22:37, 39).

How do you love your neighbor? First, you must learn to receive God’s love for yourself. Until then, you can’t truly love anyone else. You may do all the right things, but your motivation will be all wrong. And God isn’t nearly as concerned about what we do as He is about the attitudes of our hearts (see 1 Thessalonians 2:4).

My Journey to love For a long time, my heart was a mess. For many years I had been verbally and sexually abused by my father. Then I married a man who ran around on me and eventually ended up in prison. By the time I met Dave at the age of twenty-three, I couldn’t remember a time in my life when I was happy. My emotional wounds had made me harsh and short-tempered. I operated purely out of fear. And even though I knew all there was to know about Christian living, I had not learned how to receive the love of God—the only thing that can heal someone’s sick soul. It wasn’t until I surrendered control and started receiving God’s love that I finally became free.

Now I love myself! And I can’t wait to wake up in the morning and be a blessing to someone else. I study love—what it is and how God wants us to express it—more than anything else.

God loves you so much, He wants you to experi-ence that love in the deepest part of your soul. Pray and ask Him to help you be a person who walks in love. Choose to believe the best about people rather than automatically assuming the worst. Study the passages of Scripture that talk about God’s love for you and really get them into your heart. Then ask God, “How can I encourage someone today?” Don’t wait until you feel like it. Go out and be loving on purpose. You will be amazed at the joy it releases in your soul! Focus on learning to love as Jesus loved, and I promise, all the other fruit of the Spirit will follow.

“How do you love your neigHbor? First, you must learn to receive god’s love For yourselF. until tHen, you can’t truly love anyone else. you may do all tHe rigHt tHings, but your motivation will be all wrong.”

WWe all experience fear at some level in our lives. For some—like those living in parts of Asia—their decision to live for Christ brings them face-to-face with fear, whether it’s fear for their lives or the everyday struggles of being in the religious minority.

And that’s why Joyce traveled halfway around the world to share a message of encouragement about living in faith and facing those fears. In the capital cities of Sri Lanka, Thailand and India, Joyce boldly shared with the people:

“Face your fears. Don’t let fear hold you back from what God has in store for you. DO IT AFRAID!”

For more than a year, Hand of Hope, Joyce Meyer Ministries World Missions planned for these confer-ences…an opportunity not only to give people practical advice on facing their fears, but also to proclaim the saving message of Jesus Christ.

Although there has been some growth over the past few years, the number of Christians in these nations is miniscule—anywhere from 1 to 8 percent. But thanks to your support, we were able to share the Gospel and rejoice with more than 100,000 people who accepted Christ as their Savior.

Colombo, Sri LankaWith the stage set up by the beach and speakers facing a large boardwalk area in one of the busiest parts of Colombo, there was a great opportunity for the Gospel to reach thousands of attentive guests and passersby.

Volunteers scoured the grounds just before sunset, passing out copies of Joyce’s book A New Way of Living translated in Sinhalese. As worship began, the crowd grew. Amidst food vendors, dozens of children flying kites along the shore and families spending time

together, you could see thousands of people flipping through the pages of a book describing a relationship with Christ.

The words of those pages and the salvation invitation given at the conference certainly made a deep impact in the hearts of the people. Of the 167,000 people at the nighttime conferences, more than 83,000 prayed to receive Christ as their personal Savior.

Those who couldn’t attend had full access to the live event through the government TV station and God.tv. This was remarkable, considering a law many are trying to pass that will threaten opportunities to evangelize in Sri Lanka.

It’s called the Anti-Conversion Bill, and this law would prevent anyone from converting to another religion—more specifically, Christianity. In a nation that is more than 70 percent Buddhist and only 8 percent Christian,1 our desire is to see as many lives reached with the Gospel as possible.

For those two nights along the shore of the Indian Ocean, God showed up and changed the hearts of so many. We pray that spark will continue to grow through our already established outreaches in Sri Lanka.

Your continued support is sharing the love of Christ through book translation, the Enjoying Everyday Life TV broadcast, feeding programs, leadership training and more.

Bangkok, Thailand After her time in Sri Lanka, Joyce traveled to Thailand—also called “The Land of the Free.” Over the years it has been the only country in Southeast Asia that has never been colonized by a European power, maintaining their freedom. Yet even though their land is free, many of the people have never experienced the freedom found in Christ alone.

In a country of more than 68 million people, nearly 750,000 are Christians.2 That’s just over 1 percent of the entire population. So you can imagine our joy when more than 9,200 of the 16,328 who attended the two meetings accepted Christ as their personal Savior.

The messages also helped bring a deeper level of freedom to the lives of many of the Christians.

Thirty-year-old Kanawora Wittiongkarat from Bangkok said Joyce’s messages have broken him free from legalism: “I used to think that I had to read my Bible for one hour every day, and I couldn’t do anything until I was finished with

that. [Thailand is] a very work-oriented society and your value comes from how much you work, but now I have more freedom to worship the Lord and not be limited to how other people do it.”

The conference was an opportunity to encourage Christians like Kanawora, give people an opportunity to experience salvation, and preach a practical message about facing your fears.

While in Thailand, our team was also able to visit our human trafficking shelter, The Gabrielle House, and one of our children’s homes in Chiang Rai—just two of the many outreaches in Thailand reaching out with the love of Christ.

Mandala Yafool, who also attended the con-ference, knows firsthand the importance of outreaches like the children’s home because she grew up in one.

After moving to Bangkok to study, she saw that Joyce would be speaking there. She knew she had to attend because of all that Hand of Hope had done for her life.

“Joyce’s message about forgetting the past and starting fresh impacted me the most because God doesn’t want us to live in the past. He wants to see changes in our lives [so we can] be a blessing to others.”

Through the support of our friends and partners, Mandala was able to have a fresh start at life when she entered the Hand of Hope orphanage in Chiang Rai years ago.

“My life changed because I was given an opportunity to do something with my life. So many children don’t have a place to go. And I learned about the Lord and studied the Bible every day. It totally gave my life meaning, purpose, direction and happiness, and without that, I wouldn’t be where I am now.”

Delhi, IndiaThis was Joyce’s eighth trip to India. She loves coming back to share the Gospel because even though the major-ity of the population is anything but Christian, they are very passionate about their religion and beliefs. And that passion could change the world for Christ if more in this nation followed Him.

“If we could know how to live our everyday life…to learn what Jesus wants from us… I think if we as a nation could know where God wants us to go, we will,” shared Akash Roychowdhury, a conference attendee.

That’s why we are working to bring the Word through conferences, TV, radio, podcasts, books, our magazine, and more. And many of the Christians who attended the conference in Delhi say they are sharing those teachings with their friends and family. Many even write down the teachings and pass them out to strangers they meet in their everyday life.

Utilizing media to share the Gospel has always been a part of Joyce Meyer Ministries, and is an effective way to reach people in many nations around the world. That’s certainly the case in India. We’re broadcasting the Enjoying Everyday Life program in 18 languages in this nation alone.

As a result, the program is often seen in the homes of non-Christians. So it wasn’t surprising to see Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Buddhists and Christians seated together in the audience. Those who aren’t Christians often see her as a “good teacher,” which creates a great opportunity to share the salvation message. In fact, 6,915 people made a decision to be born again during that very meeting.

Daniel Pradeep, a conference attendee, wants to see even more people come to the Lord: “I really hope and pray there is going to be a revival here. India really needs God. [Joyce] is a powerful speaker. Like she said, if we can get [each] person to [start reaching others with the Gospel], then this land of a billion would really make a difference.”

It’s Okay to Be a ChristianLiving in nations where Christians are the minority can be difficult and frightening. That’s why Joyce made the thirty-hours-plus journey from the United States to share these messages of resiliency, courage and faith. One attendee summed up the greatest thing the people took away from each meeting: “Joyce reassured us that it’s okay to be a Christian.”

Thank you for sharing the love of Christ through the many outreaches of Hand of Hope, for rejoicing with more than 100,000 new believers and giving people increased confidence to walk daily in the love and grace of Jesus Christ.

Do you feel like you are always at war with someone or something? We all face battles in life. But when we put our faith in God and let Him fight for us, He leads us to victory. In the Bible, we can see this through the example of a man named Jehoshaphat. Let’s look at 2 Chronicles 20:1-3 (AMP).

According to verse 1, Jehoshaphat was facing many enemies: AFTER THIS, the Moabites, the Ammonites, and with them the Meunites came against Jehoshaphat to battle.

All of Jehoshaphat’s enemies were called some sort of “ites.” Today, we have our own brand of “ites,” or enemies. It may be the poverty-ites coming against you. Or the sick-ness-ites or people-ites. There are grouchy neighbor-ites or bad boss-ites, the loneliness-ites or the confusion-ites. There is a seemingly endless list of enemies we could face at different times.

When we face an enemy, what are we supposed to do besides fight? Take a look at what Jehoshaphat did in verses 2 and 3.

It was told Jehoshaphat, A great multitude has come against you from beyond the [Dead] Sea, from Edom.... Then, Jehoshaphat feared.

Now, fear is a typical, natural response that always seems to be what hits us first when we get some bad news. But we don’t have to bow down to fear just because we feel it. You don’t have to let fear control you. Fear only causes you

to go backwards and not make progress. We have to learn to keep going forward and do it afraid.

And that’s exactly what Jehoshaphat did. Verse 3 continues, saying that he set himself [determinedly, as his vital need] to seek the Lord; he proclaimed a fast in all Judah.

Now look closely…Jehoshaphat didn’t run around seeking other people’s advice. He set himself determinedly, or made a decision, to seek the Lord.

I want to ask you to do what Colossians 3:2 says: Set your minds and keep them set on what is above (the higher things), not on the things that are on the earth.

That means you can decide ahead of time what you’re going to do in a certain situation, then you will already be prepared to take right action. For example, many of you know my husband Dave really enjoys playing golf. Recently, I asked him how he would respond if golf was somehow taken away from him. This is what Dave said, “I have already set my mind that if there ever comes a time when I can no longer play golf, I won’t let it bother me.” What a wise statement.

Many people don’t think about preparing ahead of time for something like that. And when a dif cult situation or disappointment occurs, they react with dread and say things like, “Oh, I don’t know what I’m going to do. This is terrible!”

You can do what Jehoshaphat did the next time you face trouble. You can set your mind to be stable, solid and not react emotionally to fear. Then, your rst response can be to seek God and what He has to say about the situation.

The good news is there is no need to fear trouble, because God is on your side.

What enemy are you facing today? Maybe you are facing the loneliness-ites, and the devil is sitting on your shoulder saying things like, “Nobody loves you. That’s why you’re alone.” You need to

say, “Devil, you are a liar, because God is with me. He said He will never leave me, and I know that I can trust God’s Word.”

Or maybe you are facing poverty-ites, and you’re feeling anxious about your nances. The devil may be telling you things like, “You aren’t going to be able to pay your bills. Debt is going to swallow you up.” Again, you can set your mind on Christ and trust His provision for you. You can meditate on scriptures like this one in Philippians 4:19: My God will liberally supply ( ll to the full) your every need according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

You don’t have to let these enemies devastate you. Set your mind to trust God and believe His Word. Say aloud, Amid all these things, [I] am more than a conqueror and gain a surpassing victory through Him Who loves [me] (Romans 8:37.)

In Christ, you have authority over the enemy no matter what he is bringing against you. Just do what Jehoshaphat did. Set your mind to give the battle over to God and trust that He will give you the victory!

YOU DON’T NEED TO FIGHT ALONE ANYMOREDiscover how honest, heart-to-heart intimacy with Christ provides you with the best bodyguard you could ever have.

My mom recently wrote a book called Do Yourself a Favor…Forgive. Now, you would probably expect me to tell you how

much I like it because, after all, Joyce is my mother, right?

But all kidding aside, I can honestly say that this book has made a huge impact on me. There are many different aspects to forgive-ness, which are covered in the book. But there is one chapter in particular that completely jumped out at me—chapter 6, which is called Who Are You Angry At? In the first part of the chapter, she specifically talks about being mad at yourself.

S a n d r a M c c o l l o Mis Dave and Joyce’s younger daughter. She is a wife and stay-at-home mother of twin girls. Her passion is to see people know Christ and enjoy their lives by applying biblical principles on a daily basis. Sandra and her husband, Steve, who serves on the staff of Joyce Meyer Ministries, live in the St. Louis area.

Let me explain why this resonated so much with me. Over the years, God has helped me to grow and mature in several areas of my life. Yet recently, I realized I still had a problem and something was still not right. One day, I remember telling God, “I’m so tired,” because I felt like I was always working, working, and still working.

You know, I was not able to rest. Even when I would rest on the outside, I felt like I never stopped because I wasn’t resting on the inside. I was always looking around for something else to do.

God showed me that I was basing so much of my worth and value on what I do. At the end of the day, I would look at my to-do list and be mad at myself about the things I didn’t get done. Instead of focusing on all the things I had accomplished, I would beat myself up over the one thing that didn’t get checked off the list. It wasn’t healthy.

I was putting unrealistic and burden-some expectations on myself and getting mad when I couldn’t get everything finished. And it took the joy out of life and made me feel like something was wrong with me much of the time, even though I have a great husband and two beautiful children.

I was generally happy, but I would sometimes get angry or moody because I was upset with myself for not finishing my to-do list, and these moments made my husband’s life miserable at times. It wasn’t because I was mistreating him directly. But he used to see me frustrated way too often, and there wasn’t really much he could do about it, besides prayer and being the wonderful godly man he is.

Thank God he forgave me many times for all the fits I used to throw when

I was mad at myself. And today, my husband says he’s never seen such a big change. Our home is now filled with a lot more peace.

God has done a really big work in me. And it started shortly before I started reading mom’s book. It was just like the icing on the cake for me when I realized that I don’t have to be mad at myself. I’m okay. God loves me just for who I am and who He’s created me to be. I feel like I’m born again all over again!

My Thinking Is Now Different Once I forgave myself, my thinking changed. It’s hard for me to write about this without crying—that’s how power-ful forgiving myself has been. The Lord is helping me now to just relax. It’s hard to explain, but as I’ve relaxed about my shortcomings, I’ve gained a whole new awareness of just how much God loves me. I don’t have to earn His love. Getting that fact to sink in has been incredible! Now, I just naturally focus on what I’m accomplishing and I’m happy with that.

Forgiveness Helps All Types of PeopleI could tell you more about how forgiveness has transformed my home and my life as a wife and mother. And I’m so passionate about this book because the stories and things my mother has written have helped a lot of people. The need to forgive touches everyone.

When we live in unforgiveness in any area of life—toward others, our-selves, or even God—we are keeping ourselves in a prison. If you want to experience a feeling of freedom unlike anything you have ever felt before, then do yourself a favor and forgive those in your life you need to forgive. With God’s help, it is possible.

“One day, I remember telling God, ‘I’m so tired,’ because I felt like I was always working, working, and still working.”

I love this quote by John Maxwell, “You are not what your past says you are. You are what you choose to be.” It is my desire to share this message—along with the life-changing Gospel of Jesus Christ—with every inmate I’m able to encounter. And that was certainly the case as we prepared to enter the Dominican Republic (DR).

Their prison system is slowly evolving to become more orderly and structured, but even in the rowdy prisons, the inmates who were “in charge” stepped in to help us reach their fellow inmates with the gifts we had to offer.

Over the years we’ve been able to reach inmates in 2,765 prisons in 37 different countries, but even before this trip, we knew God was planning something big for the DR. Armed with 22,400 hygiene gift bags, we were planning to reach every inmate in the nation. It seemed like prayers were going up even more than usual in anticipation of what God was about to do in the lives of these incarcerated men and women.

Two weeks of MinisTry Upon arrival, we met with the men who had obtained permission for us to enter the prisons and went over the grueling schedule we would be on for the next two weeks. Everyone was pumped, to say the least.

To our knowledge it was the first time anyone had attempted to do what we were on a mission to complete—reach every inmate with the Gospel and a hygiene gift pack containing a bar of soap, a bottle of shampoo, a letter from Dave and Joyce, and one of Joyce’s “Help Me” books written in Spanish. We also had plenty of books in French for those inmates who had migrated from Haiti.

The next morning we were up early to catch the bus for our first prison in Najayo. We made a couple of stops to pick up those who were going with us to the prison. Along the way our team of volunteers grew to 37 people, includ-ing a worship team.

After just a few minutes, we were allowed to enter this huge facility with our care packages. Men began gathering around as the worship music began to play. Soon we were given the opportunity to speak, and at the close of that first service, 650 men gave their lives to Christ!

After the service we began handing out the gift bags to the 3,300 men in this facility. They could not believe that someone from another country would come to visit them and bring a gift without requiring them to do anything. You could tell they were suspicious and thought there had to be some hidden agenda—but we were simply there to show them the love of Christ. Most began reading the letter from Dave and Joyce, telling them of the hope for their future and their free book.

reaching Tens of Thousands We were amazed as God continued to open the hearts of men and women, who received 22,400 hygiene gift bags that were distributed at the 28 prisons. We also held 37 services, which resulted in 7,643 coming to Christ. Additional gift bags were provided to volunteers who will visit the remain-ing three of the nation’s prisons as soon as possible.

So many lives were touched as we handed out the packages and gave a message of hope to the offenders. It was totally amazing to see the Holy Spirit grip their hearts and see them give their lives to Christ.

fuTure MinisTry opporTuniTies open up On our last day I met with the director at the Assembly of God Headquarters in Santo Domingo. He told me that the Supreme Court of the DR had contacted them, giving them an open invitation to go back into the prisons to minister to the inmates. The director of the Chaplains Federation was given the same invitation.

My prayer is that the spark we began in the prisons becomes a mighty flame and totally revolutionizes the country. There has been little prison ministry up to this point in the DR prisons. But now the door is wide open and there is opportunity to reach those who desperately need a life change.

Broken lives can be put back together and broken homes can be mended as God continues to work through the life-changing Gospel message and the Joyce Meyer books we were able to leave with them.

Thanks for sending us to those who desperately need to see the light of Christ.

Hand of Hope, in conjunction with Dan Salas Ministries, completed a two-week prison trip in the Dominican Republic earlier this year. Our heartfelt thanks to Pastor Nelson of the Federal Chaplains Federation and Pastor Okeke for coordinating efforts locally in the Dominican.

A CLOSER LOOK: Fruit of the Spirit

But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit

in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law

against these things!

–Galatians 5:22,23 NLT

1. The very rst phrase of this verse helps us understand the simplicity of the way to live with the fruit of the Spirit. What is the key?

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

2. Joyce often says that love and self-control are the bookends of the fruit of the Spirit. Explain what this means to you. Can one operate without the other?

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

3. Pick one or two of the fruit you’d like to have more of and submit them to God for cultivation. What is your part?

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Looking at the list in this scripture, it might be easy to feel overwhelmed by it, thinking you could never have all of those characteristics in your life. But you can. Let’s take a closer look at the fruit of the Spirit…

REMEMBER: If you ever begin to feel like you’re not progressing fast enough, reread that first phrase in Galatians 5:22 above: The Holy Spirit is the One who produces the fruit in your life. So, relax and enjoy your relationship with God…He’s doing the hard part…and He’ll help you do your part. Don’t worry, you’re right on track!

DEARFRIEND,What I have to share with you today is one of the foundational things I’ve built my life and ministry on.

Years ago when we were establishing this ministry, God led us to focus on these three things: Excellence, Integrity and Peace.

To put it another way, He asked us to always do our best and never give up, to be honest even when no one else is looking, and to work to keep strife out of all of our relationships.

This has been our goal all along. And it hasn’t been easy, because our culture today is gener-ally mediocre, and our world lacks character and integrity. It makes big promises without ever coming through.

But God’s called you and me to live by a dif-ferent standard. He wants us to have integrity and excellence—not to make ourselves look good, but in order to glorify Him. And you and I both know that you won’t glorify God by living a mediocre, lazy life.

So, what does this kind of life look like? And how can you get there?

For most people in our world today, there’s a big gap between what they know and what they do. We have more access to information today than ever before, and as a culture, we’re so proud of what we know. Yet knowing and living are not the same thing. If we say we know something but don’t really live it…we don’t really know it!

You can read your Bible all day long and underline and highlight it until it looks like a coloring book. But until you actually start living and enjoying what it says, it won’t make any difference in your life. The good news is, in Christ, we have what we need to live the way the Word of God tells us to live.

Second Peter 1:3 tells us, His divine power has bestowed upon us all things that [are requisite and suited] to life and godliness, through the [full, personal] knowledge of Him Who called us by and to His own glory and excellence (virtue).

waiting for something big to happen in your life, then start right now to give your best in all the little things.

Dave and I are so grateful for you and believe a renewed commitment to live with excellence and integrity will bring great and rewarding promise to your life.

As a teacher, and as a sister in Christ, I urge you today to do the best with what God’s given you, and I promise that God will help you accomplish all that you can’t do in your own strength.

When you live this way, you show the world a higher level of living, and there’s no limit to what God can do in AND through your life!

Doing all things in the power of Christ,

Dave and Joyce Meyer

What is excellence? It simply means to go the extra mile, to exceed the requirements. It’s always so refreshing to be around someone who’s excellent—they’re constantly surprising you by over delivering.

People of excellence don’t just do what’s asked of them in the quickest and easiest way possible. They over deliver. They go beyond what you expect. They surprise you with their performance, but even more so, with their attitude. You might be saying, “Joyce, I don’t know if I’ve got what it takes to live that way.”

I understand if that’s what you’re thinking, but you must remember it’s not about what you can do on your own—it’s about a willing heart that’s trusting in the goodness and promise of God.

What is the promise? The promise is: God will never ask you to do something that He hasn’t already given you the ability to do. And your part is to focus on what you can do and then trust God to do the rest.

He can give you ideas, inspiration, fresh wisdom—but He won’t do your part for you. Your part is to love people, to have a great attitude and to be faithful and consistent.

Excellence and integrity always start small when no one else is watching. So if you’re
