When determining the level of aid, we use the total costs we think a student may have—billed and unbilled. This means that your aid is based on the billed costs and the personal spending, books, and transportation estimates.

There is no magical income cutoff that automatically qualifies a family for need-based aid. Factors include, but are not limited to, family size, number of family members in college, cost of education leading up to college,

and family assets. To give you a sense of how we may work with your family to fund a Notre Dame education, the chart below shows how we were able to assist the entering class of 2016.

FUNDING YOUR FUTURE

M E R I T - B A S E D S C H O L A R S H I P SThe University of Notre Dame offers a limited number of merit-based scholarships to admitted first-year domestic and international students. Recipients demonstrate exceptional accomplishment, leadership, commitment to service, and intellectual promise. Financial need is not a factor unless otherwise noted. Based on your application to the University, merit-based scholarship opportunities are offered to students by an invitation from the Enrollment Division’s Scholarship Committee. The selection process is very competitive, as roughly three percent (65 students) of enrolled first-year students receive merit aid.

Visit meritscholarships.nd.edu for more information.

S T U D E N T E M P L O Y M E N TThroughout campus, you’ll find students working in labs, libraries, gyms, dining halls, and many other locations. In fact, about 40 percent of students are employed by the school each year, for ten to twelve hours per week. Students are responsible for finding a job by searching the JOBboard (financialaid.nd.edu/jobboard) or contacting departments directly to ask about opportunities.

U N I V E R S I T Y N E E D - B A S E D S C H O L A R S H I P SThe level of University assistance varies from student to student and is based on both demonstrated financial need and academic performance.

A L U M N I C L U B S C H O L A R S H I P SMore than 140 Notre Dame Clubs offer scholarships from their respective geographic areas. All applicants for financial aid who demonstrate financial need are considered for club scholarships.

N O T R E D A M E S U B S I D I Z E D L O A NAlthough we do everything we can to reduce the need to borrow, Notre Dame Subsidized Loans are available and provide assistance to anyone with need beyond their scholarship award. The loans are interest-free during the student’s time at Notre Dame as well as during the six-month grace period following graduation. Specific details about this program are available on our website.

F E D E R A L D I R E C T L O A N SThe Federal Direct Subsidized Loan program offers loans borrowed by the student. This program is referred to as “subsidized” because the student is not charged interest while enrolled in school at least half-time and during any deferment periods. Additional information about this program is available on our website.

The Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan program offers loans borrowed by the student. This program is referred to as “unsubsidized” because interest accrues (accumulates) while the student is enrolled in school. This loan is not based upon demonstrated financial need. Additional information about this program is available on our website.

HOW TO APPLY FOR FINANCIAL AID
