SUNRISE TOWERUrban Architecture- Tower | Spring 2014

Sunrise Tower is a library and residential tower located in downtown St. Paul. The building uses various forms of visibility to inform the function of the spaces. Public spaces are transparent while private spaces are opaque. The site is located between the highways I-94 and 35E. In order to connect the sectors divided by the highway, the class proposal covers the highways and builds a new infrastructure and community above it.

In order to mitigate Fond Du Lac’s constant flooding, we propose to reroute Mission Creek. The new creek infrastructure will be used as drivers to create community-centric social infrastructure that showcase the existing assets of Fond Du Lac. The proposed plan will create a new entrance for the hiking trail, bringing much needed community spaces and highlight and connect the outdoor activities of the neighborhood.

Role in project: The concept and schematic design was a collaborative team effort between architecture and landscape archtiecture students. I was solely responsible for design development of Site E | Hiking Respite

The Hiking Respite is located between the end of the new Fond Du Lac greenway and the start of the existing Superior Hiking Trail. The dredge from the creation of the new stream will be used to reinforce the edge of the site. The building rises with the topography creating a mezzanine, performance stage, and vantage points at the apex of the landscape. As a hiking rest stop before entering the Superior Hiking Trail, the building presents an opportunity for patrons to rest and appreciate the landscape from various viewports. Intimate spaces are created through the spaces which frame specific views of the picturesque landscape.

BLACKTOP OASISGraduate Arch Design III | Fall 2013

Blacktop Oasis is a farmer’s market located in the Earle Brown Elementary School’s parking lot. The school is in the middle of a food desert, therefore, a market would greatly help the coomunity. Vendors can easily access the site through highway 94 and MN-100. There is also an adjacent playground and sports field so that parents can buy groceries while their kids play. The close proximity of the sports fields and fresh market also encourages exercise and healthy eating habits, especially among children. Leftover produce can be bought by the school.

The Apiary is a farmer’s market that serves the North Loop neighborhood. The design uses hexagon modules of varying sizes to create a welcoming communal space. Besides a farmer’s market, the Apiary also has classrooms, a lecture hall, offices, and a cafe. The abundance of seating on the periphery of the floor plan encourages socialization. These social spaces surround the markets and rooms while the minimal columns and walls allow sight lines across the building. Connections are also created throughout the building such as the bridge that tranverses the topography change. The Apairy is also located adjacent to the LRT stop. Size Variations of Hexagon Modules
