In this advanced course, the design of an upscale, global, corporate interior refl ects the comprehensive synthesis of problem identifi cation, research, programming, preliminary design, design development, and construction documents. Problem solving centers on the creative and technical aspects involved in the universal design of commercial environments including space planning with code compliance, way-fi nding techniques, and specifying corporate furnishings, fi nishes, and materials.

This studio course focuses on environmental issues concerning interior designers and the construction industry. Students participate in discussions on green design topics and learn about resources for improving indoor air quality and more responsible design choices. Following LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) analysis, a fi nal project implements sustainable design methods technically and creatively.

In this senior-level studio course, students use critical thinking skills through research, writing, discussion, and problem-solving. Emphasis is on the identifi cation of a design problem that could be better met through more responsible design. A research topic is chosen with instructor approval. Students develop a viable and visual solution for the project. Solutions incorporate environmentally sound, cost eff ective, and responsible design methods to infl uence an audience using creative delivery methods.

ASLearn is a tutoring and educational facility that embraces the deaf culture. In this building, services such as sign language courses are available for the hearing and the hearing impaired.

Because many deaf people do so poorly in traditional schools due to the inability to focus on a teacher, write notes, and watch an interpreter simultaneously, a tutoring center is available so students are able to achieve additional help in their studies.

In order to stimulate and encourage deaf culture, this new construction building is equipped with a recreational center and an auditorium for presentations in sign language.

ASLearn is designed with a Cape-Cod theme, because of the relation of deaf culture with Martha’s Vineyard.

Evidence based design was used throughout the whole process, from color selection, material use, acoustical and lighting concerns.

ASLearn is designed to meet LEED certifi cation by using materials with recycled content, energy effi cient appliances, and maximized use of natural light.

Sun splines around the perimeter allow for maximum daylight throughout the day. Low-fl ow fi xtures allow for decreased water usage.

Lighting is kept rather simple in order to avoid visual distractions and the silhouette eff ect. Fluorescent lights are avoided in order to avoid the constant “buzzing” noise that may be an annoyance to those with hearing aids.

The use of ceiling beams enhance the tall ceilings and incorporate the Cape Cod style into the space. Acoustical wooden ceiling planks allow for successful comprehension in education.

The reception is used to document all visitors to the space. Cameras are used throughout public areas to discourage crime.

Flooring is carefully selected to act as an acoustical element as well as comfort. Carpeting gives a home-like feel while combinations of wood and tile can be easily cleaned and maintained.

Finish selections off er a seamless fusion between all spaces while off ering some variety, appealing to both children and adults. They are to off er contrast between all skin tones to make the language stand out from the background.

Hearing loops are installed in multiple areas, allowing for less reverberation and improved comprehension in multiple settings.

Spiked Social Media Marketing is an upbeat and energetic social media firm that embraces the rock and glamorous lifestyles. Their office will illustrate bold and vibrant colors in an open floor plan, offering light and air in contrast to the darker elements. Repurposed rustic items will add detail to a sleek and modern space.

Productivity is enhanced by the combination of natural and artificial lighting as well as a very organized and simple floor plan. Creativity among the staff is enhanced by large symbolic decals and sculptures. Energy efficiency is obtained through low VOC paints, large amounts of natural lighting, foliage, and recycled glass and plastics.

Colors such as red, black, fuschia, and metallics offer vibrancy and energy against more neutral backgrounds so they are not to be so overwhelming. Femininity and luxury is to be added to these striking components in order to soften an otherwise edgy design. The use of chandeliers, lush fabrics, and glitter create a more welcoming work space. Ceiling levels and dark carpeting create an interesting space while providing acoustical support in a large workspace.

Way finding elements such as paint colors, dramatic lighting, and ceiling changes are easily distinguishable without compromising design. There are two exits opposite to each other and doors operate in the path of egress.

Card readers are necessary in all private office spaces and file cabinets are operated by lock and key to protect the privacy of clients.

This office is ADA compliant, offering 5’ turning radius throughout the spaces as well as removable cabinet doors to allow for clearances. Handles are at appropriate heights on all doors.

The break and lounge area serves as an entertainment area for staff and for guests. It is complete with a gaming system so users can play music in their break or waiting periods. This idea is in conjunction with the rock theme, and serves as a positive distraction in that it may increase productivity in staff members. Bold graphics are repeated throughout the building. Fun patterns are used in diff erent spaces to create a dynamic offi ce.

The overall ambiance of Galileo Pediatrics is to create a calming atmosphere while stimulating all senses. The cool color palette combined with playful colors is attractive to small children, and the exhibits educate all about the world around them. Low voltage LED lights in the ceiling resemble a night-sky, displaying diff erent constellations for families to uncover while they wait. This building was designed to achieve LEED-CI Gold.

The fl oor plan off ers beauty as well as function. The exam rooms are located in the center of the building, off ering privacy as well as a circular fl oor plan, resembling the logo of Galileo Pediatrics; a revolving axis.

In this design, HIPPA compliance issues were considered by separating private and public areas. Evidence-based design dictated non-slip fl ooring and a positive distraction.

With all of these sustainable eff orts, this medical offi ce provides a clean and refreshing quality, leaving a low carbon footprint on the environment.

n CLIENT NEEDSPlenty of counter space in order to prepare large family meals.

High end and energy efficient appliances that cater to the five adults in the family. A double oven is a necessity since mass amounts of cooking is done on the weekends. A microwave drawer is ideal in order to accommodate for counter space.

The kitchen must embrace their Italian heritage while encompassing a warm and welcoming space.

The Braasch’s require an eat-in kitchen for small meals and entertaining.

Hand-made pottery and glassware must be displayed either above the cabinetry or within glass cabinets.

The Braasch’s have four dogs so shelves and breakables must be out of reach.

Easy to clean, low maintenance materials are a must, such as quartz countertops.

This senior level studio course covers the physical and psychological factors that impact hospitality environments. Students are expected to graphically demonstrate original and viable solutions. Research on human factors, codes, and lighting are combined with product mix and multi-sensory aspects of design to infl uence perceived value to the customer.

This senior level studio is a study of the materials and fabrication techniques used in the design and construction of interiors and how these details are communicated three-dimensionally and in construction documents. Content includes interior construction detailing of ceilings, walls, fl ooring, and millwork. Project solutions will consider the integration of building technology such as mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and other relevent systems.

Hotel style, classifi cation, and themes are examined for making appropriate design decisions as course content centers on the interrelationships between the elements of three-dimensional space planning, material/furnishing selections, contract specifi cation, and detailing within hospitality environments. Presentations are developed to refl ect current industry standards for client presentations and sale center displays.

The inspiration behind this restaurant was the organic and fl oral motifs used in Czech pottery, dishware and artwork. From these more traditional designs, a new motif was able to be formed. This was made to be a striking element on the walls and in the fl oorplan arrangement. Because of the very large curves on the mezzanine level, the curved staircase was made to be a unique focal point.

The organic and rustic design elements such as the trees and branches derive from the Czech Easter holiday tradition. Willow branches are weaved, decorated in many colors, and used to whip the women on the back of the legs in order to bring them good fortune and beauty to last until the following year.

Careful consideration was taken in table spacing to ensure proper traffi c patterns. Multiple point-of-service locations are placed in the restaurant to allow the business to work effi ciently. Direct line of sight to the kitchen is blocked, and the use of in and out doors are incorporated to avoid collisions.

All materials chosen were to meet or exceel all fi re codes and are contract quality. Carpet tiles were chosen for easy maintanance. Custom booths are to be upholstered in a durable vinyl that can be sterilized between uses. Although Willow is located internationally, it does meet universal design standards.

Page 30: Jolene Embree Portfolio

The floating staircase in Willow Restaurant is created to be a grand focal point.

It is structurally supported by steel plates connected to a stringer that is welded to support beams within the wall.

The steps are made of 3” laminated wood, making it able to resist bending from the weight pushed frequently upon it.

A blue tinted plexi-glass is used as the risers in the curved staircase.

Hand rails and faux tree statues surrounding the existing columns are to be made custom made, resembling tree branches.

Retail Design

This project was a group eff ort between Alexa Herff , Katelyn Brown, and myself. The goal of this project was to create a retail space near Chicago, Illinois that could be successful in the current neighborhood. Our solution was to create a jewelery shop that off ers piercings and custom tattoos.

In order to reduce theft, a custom jewelry case on the wall features selections directly across from the cashwrap. A clear path from the front of the store to the back creates an intuitional traffi c pattern that does not disrupt sales.

Neon colors create an energetic space that fi ts in with the theme, but are used in a more modern way to avoid the typical tattoo-shop vibe.

The back wall is fi nished with chalkboard paint so artists can communicate their ideas for custom work.Grou

This reuse study of the Midwest Capital Leasing building and surrounding areas is intended to off er an updated new livelihood to Bridgeview, Illinois. This renovation is to revitalize the health of the community and economic stability to the township. The transformation of this building will tie in neighboring communities, creating a seamless district in this suburban area.

The building has been vacant since 2010 after being foreclosed upon by Fifth Third Bank. It is located in an area where it is passed by over forty-three thousand cars daily, making it an eyesore for the community.

Because Bridgeview does have a lot of elderly residents and is in close proximity to many medical centers and the hospital, this reuse study adapts the idea of using this building for a shared living facility.

Completing my Bachelors degree has been an emotional roller-coaster for me.

This would not have been at all possible for me without the help of my amazing instructors; Suzann Nordstrom, Diane Kitchell, and Roberto Lama. They bent over backwards to not only give me the skills that I need to succeed in my fi eld, but allowed me to grow as an individual. It is because of them, I have a better understanding of myself, the mark I intend to leave on the world, and the direction I need to pursue it. They’ve taught me to answer my own questions and creatively produce solutions.

My classmates, family, and wonderful boyfriend have been the best support system to me. They are my continuous inspiration to learn and grow. They’ve been my backbone through the all-nighters, the tears, and successes.

I have been extremely blessed to have people in my life who want to see me do better for myself and the world.
