IPCAN/IFIC 2010 Conference

Dear ColleaguesAfter a very successful First Infection Prevention andControl Africa Network (IPCAN) conference whichwas held in 2009 in Uganda, we are pleased towelcome you to the Joint IPCAN / IFIC Conferenceto be held from the 29 August to 1 Sept 2010 at Spier,Cape Town, South Africa. This will be the secondIPCAN Conference held jointly with the InternationalFederation of Infection Control (IFIC).

The disease profiles in Africa differ from those of thewell resourced countries and leans towards diseasesof poverty as well as healthcare associated infections. The great advantage of a joint conference with IFICis the vast experience that IFIC has from bothdeveloped and low resource countries. The JointIPCAN / IFIC conference will address the diversity ofdiseases and will address aspects of infectionprevention and control relevant to our continent.Nevertheless infection preventionists speak a universallanguage. The presence of international delegateswill also offer a unique opportunity for the sharing ofexperiences between infection control professionalsfrom different countries and backgrounds. We alsohope it will initiate contacts between delegates whoare experienced in the subject and others who mayjust be starting out.

The scientific programme is focused on scientificsessions relevant to Africa supported by presentationsfrom IFIC and other organisations related to themanagement and containment of infection and itsconsequences. There will be active participation bythe World Health Organisation relating to injectionsafety, patient safety, outbreak responses and the

most recent containment systems in place to dealwith such issues. The International Society ofChemotherapy will be organising a session onAntibiotic Stewardship and the appropriate use ofantimicrobial agents to reduce or preventantimicrobial resistance. Setting up of sterile servicesand structuring decontamination and sterilisation ofmedical equipment within limited resources will beaddressed.

The programme also includes an opportunity forAfrican and other delegates to present their originalscientific research in free paper and discussionsessions. IFIC is offering a number of scholarships tofacilitate delegate attendance, especially from lowresource countries. Further information and applicationform can be accessed from www.theific.org. Theclosing date for scholarship applications is 31 March2010.

Apart from a robust scientific programme there willbe ample opportunity to network and form new linksand support during the conference and the socialoccasions which have been organised for you.

Finally, we welcome all of you to what will be amemorable Joint IFIC/.IPCAN conference.
