If golf at John’s Island Club could be characterized with one word, it would be “friendly.” There’s a great game of golf for every golfer no matter the skill level. Of course, the challenge of tournament-level play is available when you want it, but after the scores are tallied, this is a membership that adjourns to the 19th Hole with pats on the back and good cheer for all. And isn’t that the way it should be?

From its inception, golf has been at the heart of the John’s Island Club

experience. While the courses have evolved over time, as has the game,

anyone looking to make golf their main recreational outlet couldn’t do better than

John’s Island. Not only do the members appreciate the exceptional management

of the facilities, but through participation in the Golf and Green Committees,

actively participate in the management and future of their golf club.

Nothing personifies golf at John’s Island Club more than Director of Golf, David Marad. A former PGA Tour player, David has demonstrated his passion for making the members’ golf experience the best that it can be. For more than 25 years, he has earned a sterling reputation as an excellent teacher, mentor to his golf pro staff and collaborator with the greenskeeper and others to assure top-notch facilities. David skillfully and professionally manages the golfing lives of members, and we all enjoy the game more because of him.

John’s Island Club provides exceptional locker rooms for both ladies and men. Players meet up at the outdoor 19th Hole for a post-game snack and cool beverage. John’s Island Club maintains two golf pro shops — at the main Clubhouse and the West Course — for the convenience of members. Emphasis is on the latest equipment to improve your game. No need to drive into town for balls, a new driver, golf attire (for children, men and ladies), bags, and accessories. But most importantly, members appreciate the friendly, knowledgeable staff, all golfers themselves.

John’s Island Club members are fortunate to have three outstanding courses, each with five sets of tees so every level of player, from novice to low handicapper, can enjoy a great round of golf. Improving your game is possible, too, given the full roster of instruction available—from private lessons to group clinics to golf school for juniors new to the game. Another improvement tool is our three-hole, short game practice range. There are a wide variety of games to join, or just make your own. Tee times can be made online and starters are extremely accommodating. Cart or walking? It’s up to you. Caddies are available at the West Course.

Thanks to David Marad and his team, John’s Island Club courses have become popular venues for prestigious amateur tournaments. Not only does this expose non-members to our professional golf operation, it provides some great tournament play for members to watch. In recent years, the following tournaments have been held here: U.S. Open Qualifying, Florida Mid-Atlantic Championship, Florida Open, and Society of Seniors Invitational.

MM: How did your relationship with John’s Island Club begin?

TF: I was approached by the club in the mid-80s to look at a site some distance west of the residential community. I was told that demand among members was high and they needed a third course.

MM: What did you think when you looked at the site?

TF: Two things. This course didn’t have to accommodate residential housing, a great op-portunity for any designer. Also, the site— on top of a sand ridge with significant elevation changes—was very appealing to me. However, I knew I could deliver a better design if they acquired an additional piece of land.

MM: Did they listen?

TF: They went right out and bought it! That showed a real commitment on the Club’s part.

MArk MUlvOy TAlkS WITH TOM FAzIOMark Mulvoy is the former managing editor of Sports Illustrated, a John’s Island resident and Club member since 1990, and Tom Fazio’s friend since the 1970s.

Tom Fazio is rated by his peers as the world’s preeminent golf course architect. His designs are known for capturing the unique character and natural beauty of every site. He designed John’s Island Club’s West Course in 1988.

This was an assignment I was really happy to take on.

MM: And the result?

TF: I was very happy with the result, because the course is both challenging and playable. And the Club continues to make improve-ments where needed due to environmental factors. Not all clubs or course owners make that investment.

MM: How does the West Course rate among the more than 200 courses you’ve designed?

TF: The West Course stands out in my mind because it’s built on a sand ridge just like Jupiter Hills in Palm Beach County, a course designed by my uncle, George Fazio, which I worked on early in my career. I think it’s fair to say that the West Course is one of my favorite places.

Arrive at the lauded West Course and you immediately see why it is special. Built on a natural sand ridge, it features stunning elevation changes, the antithesis of the usual flat South Florida course. Therein lies the challenge, but also the promise of a thoroughly enjoyable game. The featured Par 3, 13th hole offers tees that range from 183 yards to 105 yards and requires the player to navigate a peninsula green with both severe and subtle breaks. A par is well earned on this picturesque par 3.

The North Course is the Club’s longest test of golf and demands accurate, well-placed tee shots. The closing stretch of each nine has a player dreaming of pars. Holes 6 through 9 are long and demanding. Finally make it to holes 16 through 18 and even the most dedicated golfer can lose his focus thanks to the stunning views of the Indian river lagoon, known affectionately locally as “the river.”

The South Course is the essence of a shotmaker’s course, requiring accurate tee shots and approaches to well-bunkered greens. Eight of the nine back holes on the back nine feature water hazards which put a premium on driving. The 15th hole calls for a carry over water to avoid a bunker on the left and the looming oak tree on the right. Once you’ve reached the fairway, you still have work to do to get home in two shots with a long iron. Par is a great score on this signature course!
