Better Imaging, Better Care for YouA new facility at John Muir Medical Center, Concord has opened for pa-tients having cardiac testing or nuclear medicine studies. It was specially designed for your comfort and conve-nience. Our goal is to reduce radiation exposure, whenever possible. We’ve upgraded our camera equipment and software, which allows for lower radia-tion dosage, delivered in half the time, and views of the body that weren’t previously available.

Can Our Research Aid Your Heart?John Muir Health is one of the few Bay Area hospitals to offer the ABSORB III research trial study. This device—used to treat coronary artery disease—is made from a material that dissolves naturally into the treated blood ves-sel, which may resume more natural function, free of a permanent metallic implant. Visit johnmuirhealth.com/health-education for more info or call (925) 674-2580.

1) Small “pebbles” that form in

your urine when a change occurs in the natural balance of water, salts and minerals in your body; staying well hydrated by drinking water is one of the best ways to mini-mize the risk.

2) A condition that, when

suspected, should prompt a call to your doctor right away. Some signs to look for: severe pain in your side, belly or groin; urine that looks red or pink; nausea or vomiting.

3) The target of a lithotripter

machine, which pro-duces—usually in an outpatient procedure (lithotripsy)—pain-less, high-energy sound waves to break up the stones into sandlike particles. The tiny particles can more easily pass through your urinary system and out of your body.

GO| John Muir Health is one of only a few Bay Area health

systems with a dedicated, on-site lithotripter machine,

so we can treat our patients sooner, often within 24 to 48 hours.

JOINING OUR CLINICAL RESEARCH TRIALSWE’RE STUDYING NEW TREATMENTS THAT CAN BENEFIT YOU AND MEDICAL SCIENCE

Before you sign up for a clinical research trial, know this: If you’re eligible to join it (i.e., you have the right condition and meet the study criteria), you can have access to a new treatment before it’s widely available, and help others by contributing to medical research.

At John Muir Health, which has participated in more than 500 research trials, all trials are carefully reviewed and monitored to make sure risks are reasonable compared with potential benefits. During the study, you’ll be monitored by a supervising doctor and research nurse. You can talk over any concerns with the research team before you sign up (visit clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/about-studies/learn for a list of questions).

A Stroke Can Strike Anyone, at Any TimeLearn the warning signs in this Q&A with Jennifer Cave-Brown, a nurse practi-tioner and coordinator of John Muir Health’s award-winning stroke program

What are the warning signs of stroke? Everyone should think F.A.S.T.:

F [Face]—Notice any kind of difference in appearance on one side such as drooping. A [Arms]—Ask the person to put both arms up. Does the person have trouble holding one up? S [Speech]—Is the speech slurred? Is the person hav-ing a hard time saying words or suddenly confused? T [Time]—Time to call 9-1-1. Write down what time symptoms first appeared.

Additional symptoms include sudden loss of vision, sudden blurriness, sudden severe headache, and sudden loss of balance or coordination.

What should you do if you or someone else expe-riences these symptoms? If you notice signs of stroke, even if they go away, call 9-1-1 and get that patient to the hospital as quickly as possible. Don’t let someone drive you; ambulance ser-vices will take that person to a hospital that is prepared to treat a stroke, such as John Muir Health’s primary stroke centers in Concord and Walnut Creek. Accord-ing to national guidelines, our centers excel in rapidly recognizing and treating stroke and supporting patients during recovery.

Why is time so important?Time lost is brain lost, so the longer you wait, the more damage you’re doing to your brain. Also, there’s a fairly short time window from the time symptoms first appear to the time we can give patients a clot-busting medica-tion called tPA.

What are some of the most common risk factors? The No. 1 risk factor for stroke is high blood pressure. Other common risk factors include diabetes, atrial fibril-lation [a heart rhythm disorder], high cholesterol, smok-ing, and any kind of heart disease or blocking of any of the arteries in your neck that go to your head.

What advice do you have for people who want to reduce their risk? Adopt a healthy lifestyle. That means exercising, eating healthy foods, not smoking and limiting alcohol. Remem-ber, up to 80 percent of strokes can be prevented by taking care of your overall health.

HELP FOR WORRIED PARENTSQ&A: Dr. Lynne Whyte, associate medical director of Pediatric Operations at John Muir Medical Group

It’s late, your child’s fever just spiked, and your pediatri-cian’s office has long since closed. Where can you turn next? Children’s After Hours Care Services at John Muir Health. Here, Dr. Whyte gives details about this vital community resource.

How does John Muir Health’s new after-hours clinic and advice line work?Whyte: Parents start with a call to our advice nurse line at (925) 296-9001. The advice nurse will guide you to the care your child needs. For instance, he or she may recommend that you take your child to our Children’s After Hours Care Services in Walnut Creek, and then help you schedule the appointment. Or the nurse may recommend that you go straight to an emer-gency room. Or he or she may advise you on how to get your child through the night, and then encourage you to follow up with your pediatrician in the morning.

What kind of medical problems can be addressed after hours? Whyte: Virtually anything that isn’t an obvious emergency sit-uation. Our after-hours clinic in Walnut Creek can treat minor injuries, such as minor cuts, and illnesses or symptoms such as asthma, flu, cough, fever and stomach pain. We also conduct basic lab tests [rapid strep, mono, urine] and provide imaging services on-site. On our advice nurse line, we talk to parents about fevers, falls, coughs, earaches, rashes—the whole range of children’s health issues. Note: The advice line is free.

What are some benefits of these new services?Whyte: Your family can get assistance when you need it. That’s very important if your child is sick or injured in the middle of the night. What’s more, when your child can be treated at home effectively or in our After Hours Care Services office, it can keep you all out of the ER. That’ll save you time and money—and give you peace of mind.

WHAT IS A CHILD LIFE SPECIALIST?

Did you know that John Muir Health em-ploys a Child Life Specialist to work with children getting medical procedures for an injury or illness? She is an expert who focuses on the psychological and social as-

pects of children’s medical care by working together with children, families, doctors, nurses and social workers.

“I’m trained to help children and their families cope with the grief and stress that can accompany a seri-ous medical situation,” explains Shana Hammers, John Muir Health’s certified Child Life Specialist. “I provide

age-appropriate emotional support, activities for self-expression, therapeutic play and education related to the medical procedures the child will face.”

Hammers’ services are free and available for patients at John Muir Medical Center, Walnut Creek. Parents can ask their child’s doctor or nurses about scheduling time with Hammers. For more info about Child Life Services at John Muir Health or to request support for your child, please call Shana Hammers at (925) 947-3305 or visit johnmuirhealth.com/services. (Note: Child Life Services are currently available Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–4 p.m.)

Beat the Back-to-School Rush for ShotsThis summer, make sure your child is up to date on checkups and immu-nizations. Remember, incoming seventh-graders in California must prove they’ve had a whooping cough (pertussis) booster shot, called Tdap, before entering school. For the CDC’s complete childhood immunization schedule, visit cdc.gov/vaccines/schedules/downloads/child/0-18yrs-schedule.pdf.

The Services You Need, Under One RoofDO YOUR HEALTH A FAVOR—VISIT OUR NEW OUTPATIENT CENTER IN WALNUT CREEK

Good news: John Muir Health’s Outpatient Center in Walnut Creek is open to serve you and your family, pro-viding a convenient, welcoming location for your health care with many advantages.

You’ll find a wide range of services in one location, including an Urgent Care Center, lab services, X-ray, ultrasound, as well as nearly 30 primary care provider offices and a growing number of specialists.

“All aspects of this new Outpatient Center were de-signed with the patient in mind,” says Lee Huskins, presi-dent and chief administrative officer of the John Muir Physician Network. “You can access a range of medical services under one roof, rather than travel to multiple lo-cations for various services. This is more convenient for you and allows us to better work as a team to coordinate your care and enhance your experience.”

The team approach—including physicians, physician assistants, nurses, case managers and medical assis-tants—is also a boost to preventive care and monitoring,

which can help avoid unnecessary trips to the ER or hos-pital stays. It provides another layer of care for patients that they appreciate.

“The team approach allows us to see more patients, more efficiently—while providing the same level of care and an improved patient experience by reducing wait times. My patients have been extremely positive about the changes and like having the services all together in one place,” says Dr. Maureen Stevenson, who is chief operating officer for Ambulatory Services and was in-strumental in planning the building. “For instance, if they need an X-ray, they walk or can be escorted right over to X-ray. The same with any lab tests that might be needed.”

Other benefits that Stevenson’s patients appreciate are the drive-up, drop-off area and the ease of parking. “We’re all very proud of our new Outpatient Center,” she says. “We’re enhancing our services to better meet the needs of our patients.”
