MEMORIAL JOHN HARVEY BRYANT (1903-1974) John Harvey Bryant, a leading Australian and world renowned dairy technologist, died irt Sydney January 16, 1974. He was C:hairrnan of Directors of the Bris- bane-based national manufacturing and mar- keting company, Q.U.F. Industries Ltd., with interests in ice cream, milk, frozen foods, fish- eries, wine, ceramics, and hardware. He was also Chairman of Di- rectors of Bell, Bryant Limited, Express Dairy Company (Australia) Ptv, Ltd., and APV (Australia) Pty. Ltd., and was a Director of Diversey (Australasia) Pty. Ltd. Born at Vaueluse, Sydney, on April 5, 1903, Bryant was educated at Sydney Grammar School and graduated from the Hawkesbury Agricultural College, New South Wales, with a diploma in agriculture with the College Ho~lors Medal in 1922. He was a pioneer of many new processes and products in the Australian dairy industry, particularly in the pasteurization of milk supplies throughout Australia. He traveled abroad extensively and represented Australia at many international dairy exhibitions and con- ventions in Britain, throughout Europe, and in the United States of America. He was a mem- ber of the first Milk Board of New South Wales from 1929 to 1931 and was a Past President of the Milk Market Federation of New South Wales and the Dairy Equipment Manufac- turers of Australia. Bryant was elected to the Board of Pauls Ice Cream and Milk Ltd. in 1940 and was elected Chairman of Directors in 1943. In 1950 he became Chairman of Directors of Pauls Ltd., which was formed to acquire the whole of the shares of Pauls Ice Cream and Milk Ltd. He continued in this capacity until 1960 when Queensland United Foods Ltd. was established to head up the Pauls and Peters ice cream and milk operations through- out Queensland and the Northern Territory. As Chairman, he saw the company name change yet again to the present identity of Q.U.F. Industries Ltd. in October 1969, and also its growth into a national operation in December 1972. He was Chairman of Tanubada Holdings Pty. Ltd. in Port Moresby (in which Q.U.F. acquired an interest) and played a leading role in the development of the local dairy and frozen foods industry in Papua, New Guinea. Bryant was founder, Past Federal, and New South Wales President of the Australian So- ciety of Dairy Technology and received its gold medal in 1955. From the mid-1950's he was Vice-President of the Dairy Society Inter- national, headquartered in Washington, U,S.A., for about 8 years. He was also a foundation member of the Society of Dairy Technology, England, Vice-President of the Australian Na- tional Dairy Committee, and in 1970 was Vice-President of the 18th International Dairy Congress in Sydney. Mr. lack Maguire, Managing Director of Murray Goulburn Co-operative Dairy, Company Ltd., Australia's largest, and also a member of both the Australian Dairy Produce Board and the Commonwealth Dairy Equilization Committee, said, "Few others knew how to ~romote and develop the dairy industry like John Bryant. He will be remembered for the manner in which he helped brine dair-wmen, not just within Australia. but throughout the world, much clo~er to_~ether." Bryant, who lived at Wahroor,ga, Sydney, is survived by his widow and a married son and married daughter. 492
