1. INTRODUCTIONThis manual describes the installation and operation of the Wirsbo Genius System. Wirsbo Genius is a complete system for room-by-room control of underfloor heating systems in homes, offices, industrial sites, etc. The Wirsbo Genius system relies on radio signals to transmit temperature information from each zone to control the temperature in that zone. There are many programming features designed to optimise control of the underfloor heating system.

The system is fast and easy to install and is ideal for both new and renovation projects. Wirsbo Genius is CE marked and has been approved for use in EU countries and all of the EFTA countries.

Wirsbo Genius consists of three key components: The Control Unit, the Programming Unit and the Thermostat. The Control Unit and Programming Unit are supplied together in one box and are often referred to as the Base Unit.

Control unit: This is connected to 230 V AC power supply. It controls up to 12 24 V actuators (which are wired into the unit) and up to 12 Genius room thermostats. It is normally located near to the manifold.

Programmer unit: This keypad and display is connected to the control unit with a cable. It can be located any convenient position. The user can control the system and programme the settings of each individual room thermostat, set-back temperatures, etc. The Programming Unit has a built-in radio antenna to receive the signals from each individual room thermostat. If the signal is not satisfactory, an external antenna can be plugged into the programming unit to boost the reception.

Thermostat (Thermotransmitter): As in other room control systems, one thermostat can control one or several loops, as required. The thermostat can be positioned in the room in the normal way by mounting it on the wall. The grey bulb on the thermostat senses both convective and radiant heat to achieve optimum accuracy. The room temperature is set by turning the bulb. The min/max limits of the thermostat are programmed at the programming unit. Two versions of the thermostat are available: switch and display. The thermostats are battery powered.

A complete system is shown below at Fig 1.

2. ROOM THERMOSTAT

2. 1 External designThe temperature sensor is located under the grey bulb, which is manufactured from thin aluminium. The domed shape of the bulb quickly senses both convective and radiant heat.

2.2 Setting the temperatureThe temperature of the room can be set by turning the bulb. The programmed values are pre-set to minimum +10°C and maximum +28°C. Min/Max settings for each thermostat can be changed at the programmer (see 6.8).

2.3 Types of thermostatSwitch thermostat: Turn the bulb to set the required tempe-rature. The switch has three settings – day, night and timer. In the “day” mode, the thermostat operates according to the set-temperature. In the “night” mode, the set temperature of the thermostat is set-back by 4°C. In the “timer” mode, the set-back temperature setting of the thermostat is as programmed.

Display thermostat: Press the grey bulb to view “SET” temperature. Turn bulb to required temperature and press again to accept the new temperature. The thermostat will show actual room temperature again. Press and hold the bulb for approximately 20 seconds to change the setting from °C to °F and back again.

2.4 BatteryEach thermostat is supplied with a 3.6 V 1900 mA Lithium battery. Batteries will last approximately 5 years in the dis-play thermostat and approximately 10 years in the switch thermostat. It is advisable to change all batteries after 5 or 10 years to avoid unnecessary problems.

The battery can be changed by house-owner. Make certain that the new battery is correctly connected. If not the thermostat may be seriously damaged. Never attempt to recharge the battery.

After replacing any battery, the thermostat must be run in the Test Mode (see 2.8 and 6.6) to ensure that it functions correctly.

2.5 OperationEach room thermostat is installed and programmed with it’s own identification number. This ID-number is transmitted every time temperature information is sent to the base unit. The ID number enables the base unit to distinguish between the various room thermostats and prevents confusion with other neighbouring systems.

Each room thermostat sends control signals with tem-perature information between 2-30 minutes. The room thermostat transmits data as soon as the room temperature changes by 0.25°C or as soon as the set temperature is chan-ged. When the room temperature setting is maintained, the transmitting interval is 30 minutes.

2.6 Installation (see 6.4)The black cable supplied with the base unit is used to programme each thermostat. Connect the cable to the rear of the thermostat, behind the battery cover (Fig 4) to the Control unit.

The first available channel will start to flash on the Programmer screen. Press “OK” to accept or scroll to the preferred channel using the arrow keys.

If one thermostat is to control several channels, repeat the programming of the thermostat by disconnecting the black cable and reconnecting it. Scroll to the second channel to be controlled by the thermostat and press “OK”.

Ensure that each thermostat is correctly labelled with the channels it controls.

2.7 Positioning thermostatThe room thermostat should not be mounted on an external wall or near to a heat source such as TV, stereo, boiler or open fire. It should not be located so that it is exposed to direct sunlight. In very damp and steamy rooms, the thermostat should be located as far away as possible from the source of moisture. Thermostats must not be located where they can be directly splashed with water. Thermostats are normally positioned at 1.8 m from the ground level.

2.8 Test modeThe room thermostat is in a low energy status and does not send or receive any information until the moment it is first installed. This conserves energy and preserves the life of the battery. When first installed, the thermostat automa-tically enters the Test Mode enabling transmissions to be immediately checked. (N.B. After changing the battery, the thermostat has to be set in Test Mode manually.)

In Test Mode, signals are sent every 4 seconds for a period of up to 7 minutes before the thermostat reverts back to normal transmission periods. A red LED behind the battery cover also lights, showing when transmissions are made in test mode.

To set the switch thermostat in test mode: turn the grey bulb to the highest setting and immediately select a different position on the switch.

To set the display thermostat in test mode: simply press the grey bulb.

N.B. Reset the grey bulb to the correct temperature set-ting once testing has been completed.

3. PROGRAMMER UNIT

3.1 OperationThe programmer allows the user to have full control of all temperature settings and temperature set-backs and time periods for the whole building. Careful programming allows the user to optimise settings and improve energy efficiency. The programmer has a key pad with a display and also has an internal receiver.

A 2 m cable is supplied as standard to connect the pro-gramming unit to the control unit. Longer length cables can be ordered separately (4 m and 10 m) for positioning the programming unit where convenient.

3.2 DisplayAll menus and settings are shown at the display. Icons indi-cate which channels (actuator terminal blocks) have been assigned to thermostats.

3.3 AlarmIf a fault occurs in the wireless data transmission, the pro-grammer will emit an alarm. The fault may simply be that a thermostat battery needs replacing or that a thermostat is out of range. The alarm can be programmed to be visual only, or to be both visual and audible (see 6.15).

3.4 Built-in and external antennaThe radio receiver in the programming unit has a built-in antenna. It is therefore important to choose the correct loca-tion for the programmer, i.e. do not locate the programming unit in a metal cupboard.

If signals from the room thermostats are weak, an external antenna can be ordered separately and fitted to the program-ming unit. The connection for external antenna is on the rear of the programmer.

The strength of the signals from each thermostat is shown on the display. Press the thermometer button to view the temperature and signal information for each thermostat. 0 = no signal, 1 = poor reception, 2 = acceptable signal, 3 = good signal and 4 = excellent reception.

Note! Placing the antenna (internal as well as external) closer than 70 cm to a metallic object will affect the opera-tion of the Genius.

3.5 Programmer mounting boxSupplied as standard, this box enables the programmer to be mounted flush into a wall and the cable to the control unit can then also be mounted in the wall. Alternatively the box can be used to fix the programmer to the front of the control unit.

3.6 Summer time (BST/GMT)Adjustment to summer/winter time has to be done manually as the clock does not contain any date function. (See 6.3)

3.7 Administration functionIt is possible to programme the unit to accept min/max temperature settings only from an authorised user with a personal access code. This may be preferable in public buil-dings to limit the range and prevent users turning-up the temperatures to uneconomical values.

4.CONTROL UNIT

4.1 OperationAll actuator cables are connected to the control unit. Addi-tionally, the 240 VAC supply, programming unit cable and cable to the UFH pump control relay are also connected to the Control Unit.

The control unit houses two microprocessors to handle infor-mation and signal when actuators should open/close and when the UFH pump should be activated. When the room thermostat signals that the room temperature is below the set temperature, the UFH pump starts and the corresponding actuator opens allowing warm water to flow to the system.

4.2 ConnectionsA maximum of 12 Wirsbo 24V actuators can be connected to the control unit. Only one actuator may be connected to each terminal/channel.

The UFH pump relay switches off the pump when all the actuators are closed and circulation of warm water is not required.

Knockout holes are provided at all connection points for cables to pass through the box.

4.3 Pump exercise functionThe control unit will drive the UFH pump once a week to ensure that it functions correctly. Every Wednesday at 10:00, when it is unlikely that anyone will be disturbed, the following cycle is performed:• All actuators are closed for 10 minutes. • The pump runs for 2 minutes and is then turned off. • All actuators are opened for 5 minutes. 5. INSTALLATION GUIDELINES

Here are some key-points to installing the Wirsbo Genius system.• The programmer and control units should be installed

first. • Install the control unit horizontally, close to and above the

manifold. Ensure that the cover can easily be removed. Ensure that there is a 240 V supply near to the unit. The control unit can be mounted directly onto the wall.

• If the control unit is mounted inside a metal cabinet, ensure that the programmer and any external antenna are mounted outside of the metal cabinet.

• The distance between the control unit and the program-ming unit is limited to 2 m using the cable supplied. Longer cables can be supplied separately on request (4 m or 10 m).

• The control and programming units should be located so that they are not exposed to water splashes.

• The programming unit should be installed horizontally to ensure good radio communication.

• The programming unit should be mounted at eye level to make programming more convenient and to ensure good radio communication.

Do not permanently mount the external antenna until a satisfactory signal has been achieved. The antenna should always be mounted vertical for best reception.

6. PROGRAMMING FUNCTIONS

6.5 Erase channel assignmentTo erase the channel to which a thermostat is assigned, press SHIFT and ↑.Select the channel to be erased using ← and →.Press OK for 3 sec to confirm

6.6 Normal statusNumbers 1-12 at the top of the display will show the chan-nels that have been assigned. Time and day of the week are also visible. When a thermostat sends a signal to the programming unit, the associated channel on the display will “flash” twice.

6.7 Temperature status and signal strengthWhen the “thermometer button” is pushed, the current temperature settings and strength of the signal from the thermostat are displayed.Use the horizontal keys to view each thermostat setting0 = no signal1 = poor reception2 = acceptable signal3 = good signal4 = excellent reception

6.8 Setting max and min temperaturePress the “thermometer button” twice to change min./ max. setting. The minimum and maximum range is between 5°C and 39°C. If min setting = max setting, the temperature setting is blocked and will not be changed by turning the thermostat bulb. Confirm new setting by pressing OK.

6.3 Setting the clock Press CLOCKUse the arrow keys to set the day, hour and minutes.← and → Move to next position↓ and ↑ Change the value.Press OK to confirm

6.4 Installing the thermostatConnect the thermostat to the control unit using the black cable.The first available channel (actuator connection) will flash. Use the horizontal keys to highlight the preferred channel. Press OK to confirm. Repeat for each thermostat.If one thermostat is to control several channels, repeat the programming of the thermostat by disconnecting the black cable and reconnecting again.

To end the holiday set-back whilst it is still active:Press SHIFT and MOON. Use the ↑ and ↓ to select YES or NO to end the holiday set-back period. Press OK to confirm.

6.14 AlarmIf the control unit receives no signal from a room thermostat for 90 minutes, or if there is a fault in the system an alarm will signal. The icon for the faulty channel and the alarm icon will flash, and where selected, an audible alarm will sound. To acknowledge an alarm signal, press “SHIFT”. The audible alarm will stop. The alarm icon will continue to show in the screen. The icon for the faulty channel will continue to flash. The visual alarms will disappear either once a signal is received again from the thermostat or when the thermostat is erased from the control unit. Until a signal is received from the thermostat, the actuator will remain closed and there will be no heat in that loop.

6.15 Audible alarmPress SHIFT and ← and → to select audible / inaudible alarm. Press OK to confirm.

6.16 AutotestIn this mode, all functions are tested in sequence. This takes about 15 minutes. Press SHIFT and then OK. All icons in the display are shown. Pump and channel 1-6 receive power and actuators 1-6 are opened. The actuators 8-12 are then powered and opened in turn.

6.9 Set-back groupsPress “moon” to view the set-back groups A B and CEach group has two set-back periods. Each set-back period can be assigned to channels and days independently of one another. Use ← and → to select set-back group and confirm with OK. Factory setting: Group A is assigned to all channels on all days and the set-back period is from 10.00 pm to 5.00 am.

6.10 Programming set-back periodProgram the selected Set-back group as follows:Use ← and → to move the cursor between various posi-tions.Use ↑ = ON, ↓ = OFF to switch channels and days on and off.Once a channel or day has been selected, it will remain visible.Press CLOCK and ↑ or ↓ to change the start/stop time for the channel/day. If the time-interval goes over midnight, e.g. from 10:00 pm. to 05:00 am, the day chosen refers to the set-back starting time. Confirm with OK. If one channel is assigned to more than one set-back group that are active simultaneously, the set-back group with the longest reduction period will actually be assigned.

6.11 Programming set-back temperatureAfter the set-back periods have been confirmed, “set-back value” will be requested. Use the ↑ and ↓ to change the set-back temperature between 1°C and 9°C. Confirm with OK

6.12 Global temperature set-backWhen the system is in normal status, it is possible to acti-vate global temperature set-back. All temperature settings, independently of other programmed values, are set-back by 4°C until the global set-back is cancelled. Press SHIFT and CLOCK to activate global set-back. Global set-back is shown in the display. Cancel by pressing SHIFT and then CLOCK.

6.13 Holiday set-backThis function is used to temporarily reduce all the tempera-ture settings for a pre-set period between 1 and 90 days. Press SHIFT and MOON. Use the ↑ and ↓ to select the number of days. Confirm with OK. The set-back period applies from 00.00 the following day. Program the set-back temperature using the ↑ and ↓ to change the set-back temperature bet-ween 1°C and 9°C. Press OK to confirm.
