Johan Renck

Joan Renck is 44 years of age and was born on December 5th 1966. He is a Swedish musician under the name of ‘Shakka Bo’, a music video

director and now a film director. He has worked with the likes of Kylie Minogue on her video ‘Love

At First Sight’, All Saints ‘Black Coffee’, Madonna’s ‘Hung Up’ and ‘Nothing Really Matters’

and Beyonce Knowles ‘Me Myself And I’. Renck recently completed his first feature film ‘Downloading Nancy’ which was premiered at

2008 Sundance Film Festival on January 21st 2008 in Park City, Utah.

CameraThe video focuses on the two main actors in the video, two young boys. They are

performing rebellious acts all throughout the video. There are lots of scenery shots

and long shots with a handheld camera giving us the idea of the video being very naturalistic and realistic.

LightingThe lighting of the video is simply the dull light of a cloudy day, throughout the

video all they have used is natural light. There are lots of greys and greens giving the video a very gritty feel to it.

EditRenck uses lots of slow motion in all his videos, in this particular video this

emphasises the focus on the boys rebellious actions, throwing trolleys into rivers and smashing things up.

Set/LocationThe video is set on and around a council estate mainly focusing on the tower

blocks.

LightingThe lighting in the video was very much all stage lit, using spotlights and synthetic

fast cuts shots.

Set/LocationThe video seemed to of been filmed in a studio, on stage, even when the artist is supposedly driving in a car you can tell that it is still all studio based using green

screen.

The video has a correlation between good and evil. The artist wearing a red hoody could symbolise ‘little red riding hood’ and the demons wearing the black suits.
