Played sports similar to baseball, football, and ten pin bowling.

The team sports were enjoyed by both the players and the spectators.

Blood sports were enjoyed involving bears, bulls, cocks and dogs - team sports were also rough and violent. Even some card games were played in teams such as 'Ruff and Honors'! And the outcome of team sports contests were subject to heavy gaming and gambling!

Sports

It was not usual or traditional for marriages at such young ages. The actual age of consent was 21. Elizabethan men would generally not marry until this age.

The legal age of consent was 21, but with parental permission girls could be married off at 12 and boys 14.

Legal Laws

Grammar schools were available to people in the middle class and upper class had even more education opportunities.

Between 1550 and 1570 many of England's famous schools and colleges were founded.

The Elizabethan Era is perhaps most famous

for its theatre and the works of William Shakespeare.

English Renaissance theatre began with the opening of "The Red Lion" theatre in 1567.

Many more permanent theatres opened in London over the next several years including the Curtain Theatre in 1577 and the famous Globe Theatre in 1599.

Theater

• The typical home for a poor farmer was a one room hut, but wealthier merchants began to live in large homes. These homes would have been dark and cold compared to today's homes. They didn't have running water or bathrooms either.

• The main religion of Renaissance Europe was Christianity and the main church was the Catholic Church. However, there were new ideas during this time including a new Christian church called Protestantism and a new philosophy called Humanism. Humanism was important to the Renaissance because it placed values on human accomplishments and the study of nature.
