It is quite interesting. You get to meet all kinds of people and at the same time, you will learn a lot about Jodo Mission and Jodo Shu. In preparation for the O-Bon season, the O-Tobas need to be written and the minister needs to concentrate on the O-Toba he is working on so having someone answer the telephone while the minister is writing an O- Toba or doing a memorial service or getting ready for a funeral would be greatly appreciated. If you are interested, please contact Rev. Narashiba at 949-3995. Arigato Arigato for your many orders of O-Tobas. We are happy that you remembered your deceased family members and we will do our best to see that your O-Tobas are pre- pared at your request. Please remember to also visit your O-Tobas after July 5 when the O-Tobas are ready for your visit.

Arigato to Food Fair Held on March 13, 2016

On behalf of the ladies of the Honolulu Jodo Shu Fujinkai, we wish to thank all of you who purchased our homemade tonkatsu sandwich, maki sushi, spam musubi, sushi vinegar, donated baked goodies, gau, fruit salad, etc. Everything was delicious! We understand we made a few mistakes and we apologize and we will do better!

Tatsuji and Chinatsu Maeda wanted to make and sell ton-katsu sandwiches because it is something different and they want-ed everyone to experience Japanese sandwiches. They even got

Rev. Narashiba to fry tonkatsu. Did you get to eat the tonkatsu sandwiches? Weren’t they delicious! Chinatsu is one of our newest Fujinkai members with a lot of new ideas! Also, to all the Fujinkai ladies and friends of Fujinkai who worked so hard and helped make this Food Fair a success, ARIGATO GOZAIMASU! This was a wonderful experience and the fellow-ship gained was wonderful! In Gassho, Sally Hayashi for Honolulu Jodo Shu Fujinkai.

Oahu Jodo Shu Rengo Fujinkai Convention

On April 24, 2016, the Haleiwa Jodo Shu Fujinkai and Honolulu Jodo Shu Fujinkai met and held their Convention at the Betsuin. After the formal portion of their Convention and luncheon, Gail Masaki taught the ladies how to make cards for birthdays, mother’s day, father’s day, etc. Photo at

bottom left shows the ladies displaying their finished products. Everyone got a chance to make 2 cards. Even Rev. Ezaki and Jon Karamatsu participated! Everyone joyed them-selves. Gail is a fairly new member of Honolu-lu Fujinkai who has wonderful ideas and is so cheerful!

Mother’s Day Photos

Father’s Day Celebration June 19th

We always remember our Mothers, but do we always remem-ber our Fathers?

Please come to our Father’s Day Service and honor your father by your presence on June 19th at 10 a.m.

Malama Concert for Father’s Day

As part of our Father’s Day celebration, Jodo Mission of Hawaii will have a concert with piano and violin performed by guest violinist Sara Toma who attends Kaimuki Middle School and piano by Rev. Kanjun Nakano. We asked Sara if any of her other friends would like to join her so we might have other guest performers.

Please join us for this special treat and bring your Dads, Fathers, Grandfathers!

On May 8, we celebrated Mother’s Day with Sophie Narashiba explaining her Happy Mother’s Day drawing and Takeru Nii’s story of what of his mother means to him. Both mothers were sur-prised and happy!

The Intermediate YBA and Sunday School treated everyone to a wonderful Mother’s Day lunch.

As part of the Mother’s Day celebration, we were treated to a mini

concert by Rev. Kanjun Nakano on piano and guest bassoon player Marsha Schweitzer. Rev. Nakano explained that historically music was preserved by religion and through Christianity. They played music from J.S. Bach (Chorale from Cantata No. 147 and Menuet from Suite 1), A. Vivaldi (Sonata), C. Saint Saens (The Swan), G. Faure (After a Dream), W. A. Mozart (Ave Verum Corpus). Very nice music!

Marsha Schweitzer having to blow her bassoon through most of the concert was amazing!

Hints at the Graveyard: Many peo-ple visit their ancestors at the grave-yards at O-Bon time. Sometimes they have many graves to visit. If you go to the grave and there are 2 flower con-tainers and you just happen to have enough flowers for one container, which should you fill with flowers?

It has been suggested that you place the flowers in the left flower holder and leave the right flower holder face down.
