How Do You Cut & Paste a Resume to a Job Application? At some companies, the traditional paper resume has gone the way of the dinosaur. All job applications are completed online and no paper application or resume is required. However, you still need to provide all the standard application information online. At many company websites, you can't upload formatted resumes. Instead, the company wants you to cut and paste your resume into their web-based job application.

Write Your Resume Start by writing your resume in a word processing application such as

Microsoft Word. You will still need a nicely formatted resume during your job search. You will use your formatted resume to upload to company websites that accept resumes in MS Word format, and you will also need to print some paper resumes to take to job interviews.

When you save your resume file, include your name in the filename. That way, when you upload a formatted resume, anyone at the company who gets a copy will know whose resume it is without having to open the file. Hiring managers do not want a computer folder full of files simply named "resume."

Convert Your Resume to Text

Page 3: Jobs 31jan2012

Once your resume is completed to your satisfaction, save a copy of as a plain text file. Select the "Save As" option in your word processor and make sure you add a .txt extension to the end of the filename.

Open the text file in a text processor application. On Windows you can use TextPad or NotePad, and on a Mac you can use TextWrangler. Now make your resume look as attractive as you can in plain text format. Set the line width to about 65 characters per line. Shorter lines will help keep the text easy to read after it has been pasted to the job application. Check line breaks to make sure none of them look odd. You may need to rearrange some text so it looks nicer. Check section headings carefully. You won't be able to use bold or italic text to make them stand out, but you can put a blank line after the heading to set it off.

Cut & Paste Your Resume When you are filling out an online job application and need to cut & paste

your resume, open up the text version of your resume in the text processor application. To copy your resume, highlight the entire text of your resume and select "Copy" from the Edit menu. Then, switch back to the online job application, click in the box where the company wants you to paste your resume and select "Paste" from the Edit menu.

Before moving on to the next section of the job application, scroll through the pasted resume to make sure the entire resume is there and looks good. If there is a problem with the pasted resume, delete it from the job application and make any necessary changes in your text file before you copy and paste the resume into the application again.

Jump-start your job search by creating a skills-based resume It’s not your fault you’ve had six jobs in the last two years. The dot-com thing didn’t work out, you moved twice, you were downsized—whatever. It doesn’t matter. What matters is that your resume is now a twisted mess of jobs that at best confuses potential employers and at worst convinces them you don’t have what it takes to go the long haul.

Make your varied experiences work for you by creating a skills-based resume that draws attention to the skills you have and away from the different places you’ve graced with your presence.

You might benefit from a skills-based resume if you:

Have held three or more jobs within the last two years. Have had several jobs with unimpressive titles that gave you a lot of hands-

on experience. Gained unofficial IT experience while working in other fields. Are a recent graduate. Aren’t getting many calls even though your resume has been on every

available job board for weeks.

Here’s how to create your own skills-based resume. Use the following guidelines to come up with a list of skills and get ready to see—and present—you in a whole new light.

Technical skillsList your technical skills. Obviously they’re the most important component of an IT

Page 5: Jobs 31jan2012

resume. To jog your memory, use the list included with the resume download. Of course, if you have specific technical skills not on the list, be sure to add them. Note applicable software versions, when you last used the product, and rank your level of expertise on a scale of 1 to 10. Go over your list and eliminate any skills you haven’t used in more than a year or where your level of expertise is below 3.

ContributionWrite out answers to the following questions:

What is the one thing your organization depends on you for? What’s the one thing you do better than anyone else? What would happen if you left tomorrow?

List five qualities you admire in others. Now write a sentence applying each quality to some aspect of your work. Be sure to focus on the tasks you do that are crucial to your organization’s success.

Hands-on experienceDetail a problem you were able to solve using your technical skills. Did a recurring error interrupt network operations? Did new employees lack training? Were inefficient work habits hampering productivity? Were sales down?

Next, write down the action you took to correct the problem.

For example, you might have researched, selected, and installed network monitoring software—or perhaps you developed an in-house tool. Did you create a training program or come up with ways to streamline tasks and get more done with fewer workers? Write it down.

The third and most crucial step is to write down, in your own words, what your employer gained from your action. Did you save the company time? Money? Put it on paper.

LOCAL JOB SEARCH

Page 20: Jobs 31jan2012

Local job search is critical to your job search because most employers routinely REJECT applications from most of the people who live over ten miles away for the job…five miles if you tell them you have no/limited transportation or more than 30 minutes away from the job site by bus.

This is due to the fact that 80% of a decision to hire or not hire is based upon the factor(s) of dependability and flexibility. If you live within this range and you start you conversation with the phrase: “You know, I just live down the street…” you have overcome 80% and if you are excited about the job; you have a handle on the other 20%...That usually means: “YOU ARE HIRED!”Consider that when you see an advertisement; you are one of 500+ people who see that advertisement. At that point the footrace is on and your odds of getting this job are running at 500 to 1. Not good odds…right?Consider that 97% of all companies in Arizona employ less than ten employees.Consider that many of these companies cannot afford to $250-300 advertisements or the 500 resumes that they will get from the cheap Craig List’s Advertisement.

So this means that there are many companies who will run an advertisement ONLY as a last resort and ONLY if they cannot find someone by letting their current employees refer people, from the sign in the window or other cheaper means of searching. So this means that there are many companies that have current unadvertised openings and that very few (if any of those 500 people from above) job seekers know anything about these jobs or companies.

WHAT IF we could show you a way to find these companies and to find all of these companies that are within that 5-10 mile range, broken down by occupation or industry?

Page 21: Jobs 31jan2012

WHAT WOULD access to this great source of information give to you in terms of an advantage over those 500 other job seekers…?WHAT IF you had an actual script to help you start a conversation with any of these employers?

WHAT WOULD THIS MEAN TO YOUR JOB SEARCH?

INTERESTED?

UNDERSTANDING THE SITUATION:

Can't seem to find a job? Maybe you're just not looking in the right places.

Page 22: Jobs 31jan2012

Because of the overwhelming number of job seekers ready to pounce on new openings, employers often bypass the big online job boards and even placement agencies, and try to fill job openings directly.

Over 80% of today's jobs aren't advertisedCompanies are relying more heavily on their current employee networks, or on local or specialized job pools, to avoid the flood of unqualified candidates that comes with high unemployment.Businesses go to employees first and ask if they know anybody. That way, managers don't have to go through the time-consuming process of placing an ad and sorting through applicants, he explained. With nearly 15 million people unemployed, there are more than five job seekers per opening, according to the Labor Department's most recent data.Employers are definitely leaning on their employee population to get referrals for people that their employees trust. Otherwise, they have to screen thousands of applicants.Open positions may eventually make it onto big job sites, but only after employers reach out to their employees or a select group of recruiters first.

Page 23: Jobs 31jan2012

The first couple of weeks are the quiet period, which is mostly word of mouth. For example, one company recently reached out to Robinson, looking for qualified candidates to fill an opening for a human resources associate, which was neither posted on the company's web site nor listed on any job boards. When employers do advertise, they are much more selective in where they post by utilizing smaller, free sites that are unique to a skill set or a specific market. Small or mid-sized business owners, in particular, generally have more luck finding a qualified resource through a site specific to engineers in Pittsburgh, for example, rather than a major job board that caters to all types of job seekers nationwide.Big job boards are of limited help for them because so many of the users aren't in the area they are recruiting.

SOLUTION: Uncovering hidden jobs

According to career experts, there are also ways to tap into a company's network to find out about openings, even if the positions are never advertised publicly.Dig deeper when thinking of connections" at choice companies.Joining local networking groups for your profession or LinkedIn may uncover a connection to an employee at the company -- such as sharing the same school -- which could be the foot in the door you need, she said.Joining a company's community online, through sites like Facebook and Twitter may also provide access to openings before the general public.

Page 24: Jobs 31jan2012

Without an "in" at the employer of choice, job seekers can still gain an advantage by contacting the company directly, even if there are no open positions posted.

When it comes to finding out about jobs that are unadvertised, it often boils down to "knocking on doors." HOW TO LOCALIZE YOU SEARCHWithin 1-5 miles of your home there are hundreds of businesses (both large and small); you pass by them, every day, without ever a thought that this is a treasure chest of awaiting jobs and opportunities. In almost every career field there are employers that need a person with your skills and the sad disconnect is that they do not know you either.Where do you start? How do you, in a logical and systematic way, discover these hidden jobs? The answer is easier than you can imagine. The way to get a list of these companies is only a click way. Below we will work you through the easy steps of discovery and then, we will show you how to take your list and turn it into a job.

STEP ONE:The process starts with a visit to www.yellowpages.comA. Conduct a search by industry by putting in “restaurant” in the search field at the top of the page.B. put in your home zip code as the address.(The search will compile a list….)C. Redo the search by changing “best choices” to distance.(this will resort the list by distance from your home; with the companies at the top being the closest to you…this list will surprise you in how long

Page 25: Jobs 31jan2012

it is and you will be amazed that there are so many companies that close to your home…many within walking or bicycling rang of your home…no more issues of long bus rides or living one car breakdown away from disaster…)

STEP TWO:Print out you list (if possible). Your Job Search list will give you the name of the company, the address and a phone number. Good so far…but, now what?Depending upon the industry; your next step could be to call each company utilizing (modifying to your own info) our suggested scripts or it might be important to go in person to introduce yourself (with one of our suggested scripts).Different industries require different contact methods. The restaurant, fast food or retail employers will be best reached between 2-4 PM – which is their downtime and where they are more likely to have the time to talk to you. With other businesses; the best time is 10AM to Noon.CALL OR VISIT? Small business owners put much value on face-to-face meetings and put even more value upon in a person who was interested enough to present themselves in person. The go in person approach shows that you are motivated and that you are really interested in working for them. Calling is less time consuming; you can screen many more companies and it is easier but…you must realize that without the proper script; you might be wasting time and energy. Remember it is very easy to say no over the phone than it is to say no in person.

CALLING SCRIPT:Use the phone to call each and use the following script:

Page 26: Jobs 31jan2012

“Hello, my name is _______________. I live here in the neighborhood and I have _______years working in _______________ (food/retail/warehouse/etc…) and I was wondering if I could stop by later today and talk to you about a job?”

If they have an opening(s)…write the info down

STEP THREE:If you are told by any company to apply online; do so and then return to let them know that you did do this, that you live down the street and that you are really interested in the job.
