he world of tomorrow belongs to the young people of today. They are at the forefront of global change and

innovation. Empowered, they can be key agents for development and peace, with music as one of their

most powerful and dedicated means, a true universal language of expression.

Music is an important tool for building sustainable human development cooperation, as music brings people

together, breaks down barriers, creates platforms for dialogue and boosts creative potential.

Since 1945, Jeunesses Musicales International (JMI) has been ‘Making a Difference through Music’, bridging

social, geographical and cultural divides to create an international platform for intercultural dialogue, learning

and understanding.

JMI is currently the world’s largest youth and music network, developing demand-driven programs to empower

youth on local, national and international levels. JMI champions greater access to music learning for young

audiences, creates opportunities to the world’s youth to become musicians, advocates and raises awareness for

quality formal and non-formal music education for young people.

One more year with JMI has passed. It has been a year full of phenomenal leaps forward and that at the same time has reminded us of the number of significant challenges that still lie ahead. From my perspective I have particularly noticed and appreciate the great progress made by our international projects; the growth of Ethno, the advancement of the Fair Play project with its huge outreach and urgent topic, the excellent international Imagine Festival, the now established Young Audiences Music Awards, our new opening into the Jazz World, and much, much more. A very special accomplishment that I have to make special mention of is the

inauguration of the Euro-Arab Youth Music Centre in Limassol, Cyprus. Finally we have through the hard and creative work of many people, created a unique platform for a long-term collaboration between JMI and the rich Arabic cultures.

All this said, we cannot hide from the fact that there are several substantial obstacles still to be overcome. These can be seen and felt when trying to generate the adequate resources needed to run our projects and programs in regions with less developed economies and without traditions of strategic support for culture. Political changes and the current global economical crises have also harshly affected some of our JMI members and I’m afraid we have not seen the last of these problems either.

With our long and proud history and with several significant successes under our belt, I believe that we have established a strong international ‘hallmark’ that sits firmly in the hearts of those who we have reached. At the same time, we are compelled to continually convince our donors and supporters that ‘Jeunesses Musicales’ is a modern organization with important and relevant activities for young people and children around the world. Being an organization with the age of an average lifetime, there is always a risk that you might become regarded as a relic from the past. To truthfully show and account for what JMI stands for today is thus a crucial challenge. Active and extensive work done via modern digital communication is here a must. Above this we may also have to consider updating other images of our network too. A network is no stronger than its’ weakest links and by helping to develop stronger members we will surely pave the way for a stronger network. To support and evaluate our membership structure is a delicate yet vital task. For the future, I’d lastly like to emphasize the importance of collaboration; inside our network, but also outside with other organizations and institutions with which we share similar agendas.

I believe that JMI has the great potential of becoming a central part of the lives of even more young people across the globe. Music with all its capacity to empower, to be urgent and give a voice to voiceless, is our subject. Youth, the future itself, is our object. International is our profile. What better starting point for change could we have?

Sincerely Yours,Per Ekedahl

HIGHLIGHTSThe Euro-Mediterranean Youth Music Expo occurred between the 28th of September and the 1st of

October in Limassol and was opened with a welcoming speech from Mrs. Androulla Vassiliou, European

Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism, Sport, Media and Youth.

The Expo brought together participants from the Euro-Med region and Arab countries, totaling over 200

young musicians from different musical backgrounds and styles as well as music teachers, organizers

and music industry professionals for a multilevel educational and artistic fair that included workshops,

seminars, open-air public concerts and more.

The Euro-Arab Youth Music Center was opened on the 30th of September 2012.

It’s very hard to explain what we actually felt and learned from this expo... This expo was like a spiritual push for us in our musical scene and opens a new way of thinking and understanding others whilst handling a global aim and responsibility in our own hands!

In 2012, eleven Ethno camps were organised in

Australia, Belgium (Flanders), Croatia, Denmark,

Estonia, France, Jordan, Slovenia and Sweden.

Ethno France organized Ethnofonik in Paris

between 21 - 28 January, a combination between

a regular Ethno camp and training course which

brought together 24 former Ethno participants

and leaders from 11 countries to explore the role

and identify the qualities necessary for an Ethno

musical leader and share the traditional music

of their country through live concerts and a

recording which can be downloaded for free.

During spring and autumn, Ethno Estonia

organized two shorter Ethno camps in Viljandi

with participants from Estonia and neighboring

countries.

The first Ethno Jordan (Euro-Arab Youth Music

Lab) took place between the 1st and the 6th

September in Amman bringing together 40 young

musicians from Arab and European countries.

20 musicians all put together, each bringing a song and teaching the other 19 artists, all in ONE WEEK. I learned and gained so much from this group of talented people, made many new friends and I’m so glad I was a part of it.

Ethno Sweden launched Ethno Exchange, a

new project within the Ethno framework aimed

at strengthening ties with international Ethno

partners and outreaching to other countries for

exchanges in traditions and culture. The project

also has a focus on gender balance and brought to

Ethno Sweden participants from Croatia, India and

Tanzania.

Ethno On The Road brought back to Sweden six of

its most talented young Ethno participants for a

series of school workshops and concerts between

the 4th and 15th of October.

reated in 1949, The Jeunesses Musicales World Orchestra (JMWO) is the first ever orchestra formed

exclusively by young musicians selected from more than 50 countries worldwide. An outstanding

example of global cooperation, the JMWO has partnered with key international orchestras and worked with

top class young musicians, soloists and conductors including Zubin Mehta, Leonard Bernstein, Charles Dutoit,

Yakov Kreizberg and Kurt Masur. To date, the orchestra has toured over 80 cities from 30 countries in the

most prestigious venues and at high profile events, bringing together over 6,000 musicians and touching a

The JMWO was the first ensemble to receive the title of UNESCO Artist for Peace. After a highly successful run of 60

years, JMI has taken up the challenge to redesign an artistic concept that defines a new mission for the JMWO in order

to take back its place in the classical music spotlight in 2014.

That summer, while on tour with the JMJWO, opened my eyes about what my future was shaping out to be. It was so nice to witness what jazz can do to the person making the music and how people react to creativity. I met some outstanding instrumentalists that in my opinion, through time and diligence will be the next jazz superstars of the world. I don’t want to ramble so much but do want to acknowledge, whatever Jeunesses Musicales and its affiliates are doing, please keep going! Music is a part of this world and it would be a shame if opportunities like these ever stopped!

The JMI Joint Meeting serves as a focal point for JMI’s members’ representatives to get together, exchange

opinions and ideas, discuss and steer JMI’s international programs and initiatives. Some 45 members of

JMI’s Commissions, Committees and Working Groups came together in April 2012 in Ankara (Turkey) to

follow up and pursue the works of each entity as well as preparing reports and presentations for the 67th

JMI AGA in Germany. A session on funding opportunities was held in order to strengthen the JMI Strategy

2011-2015.

The 67th JMI Annual General Assembly was held in Weikersheim (Germany) from the 18th to the 23rd of July.

The world meeting centre of JMI metamorphosed into a “Magical Place for Music” where delegates from

all ages coming from JMI member organizations from the world got together for meetings, networking

activities and unforgettable concerts, impeccably hosted by JM Germany. The JM Jazz World Orchestra

under the musical direction of Sigi Feigl (Austria) provided the perfect close to the 67th AGA and took place

in the wonderful setting of the Weikersheim Castle’s Orangerie.

The JMI Executives Meeting is a unique platform that gathers the executive officers (directors, general

secretaries) from JMI’s member organizations. It creates a space for debate and discussion around

strategic development issues from an executive perspective. The latest JMI Executives Meeting was held in

Limassol, Cyprus between 28th September and the 1st of October in parallel with the Euro-Med Youth Music

Expo.

The training course entitled “Voice the Music” organized in cooperation with JM Macedonia in Struga

between the 1st and 2nd of October brought together young people from the Balkan and Eastern European

regions with the aim to develop their skills in different branches of the music industry.

HIGHLIGHTSVoice the music training course in

Struga was an exceptional example of synergy and team-work at its best. The workshops were valuable with their content and covered some of the most important issues people engaged in culture face nowadays. And what’s almost equally important, the meetings were held in the beautiful surroundings of the Balkan countryside. I recommend this and any similar capacity building activities to everybody willing to work in the field of culture.
