Jiangsu is the second smallest, but the fifth most populous and the most densely populated of the 22 provinces of China. Since the start of China’s economic reforms in the 1990s, Jiangsu has been a hot spot for economic development. Strategically located in the Yangtze River Delta with close proximity to Shanghai, it generates around one-third of the national GDP. In 2014, Jiangsu’s GDP was valued at USD 1.059 trillion, ranking second of all provinces, after Guangdong. Jiangsu, China—The Land of Opportunities Jiangsu Green Building Industry—Leading the Green Wave By construction volume, Jiangsu is the leading province in China building industry. Its newly constructed buildings amount to 10% of the country’s new buildings each year. The number of green buildings in Jiangsu amounts to more than 25% of the whole country. It is the leading province, with its total area of construction for Green Building in the province estimated to exceed 100 million m 2 by 2015. China‘s first green building local laws and regulations “Jiangsu Province Green Building Development Act” has been approved and officially implemented from 1 July 2015. The Act provides a range of incentives for the construction, procurement and operation of green buildings, as well as mandate that new construction projects must obtain one-star green building ratings in order to win approval from local regulators. By 2020, more than 50% of the new developments in Jiangsu will be constructed to Two-Star and above standard. With Jiangsu’s commitment to sustainable development, this will bring about many business opportunities for Singapore companies in the following areas: Architecture design and green building practices Operation and supervision of energy conservation in large public buildings and energy conservation services markets Water and wastewater management Special eco-technologies for green building, such as geothermal heat pumps Advanced building cooling equipment, such as maglev chillers Systems to enable the recycling of building materials Renewable energy sources Current ongoing developments such as the Sino-Singapore Nanjing Eco Hi-tech Island (SNEI), also presents multitude of business opportunities. It is set out to be an island showcasing the future of Nanjing and its aspirations to be a centre for the development and practice of high -tech innovation in areas such as IT services, eco-environmental service, modern service industry and modern agriculture service industry. SNEI lies 6.5 kilometres from Nanjing's downtown area and is linked to Nanjing's new central business district, the Hexi New Town. Designated one of four "green lungs" of Nanjing, the island is considered a National Grade 'AA' scenic area. Half of the island's 1,500 hectares will undergo urban development with the remaining area conserved for eco-tourism. 180 hectares of land are earmarked for the development of office space to house creative and innovative design firms. An additional 182 hectares amid the island's water canals and lush greenery are earmarked for residential development. Set for completion in 2020, the development is set to become the geographical centre of Nanjing’s urban area and is expected to draw $2.1 billion in investments, and create 100,000 new jobs. In early November 2015, IDG organised a mission trip to Shanghai and Nanjing. At the Sino-Singapore Green Building Forum held at Nanjing, local companies had the opportunity to share their expertise, products and services. IDG also arranged and facilitated a visit to SNEI to learn more about its development. In the first half of 2015, Singapore’s cumulative actual investment in Jiangsu reached US$24.7 billion with 4,011 projects. In October 2015, Singapore and Jiangsu Province agreed to increase economic cooperation that is in line with China's "One Belt, One Road" initiative, which aims to rebuild Silk Road trade infrastructure with Asia and Europe. Both parties will also explore and facilitate greater cooperation through public-private partnerships (PPPs). With its increased relevance, PPPs is one of the viable models of entry into China for companies in the infrastructure, environmental services and logistics sectors.
