Origami is synonymous with traditional Japanese gift giving known as Noshi, good luck token made of folded strips of paper. Mythically this art form began it's modern references by Ihara Saikaku during his description of paper butterflies in a dream estimated in 1680. While Japan seems to have the most extensive tradition, there is evidence of independent paperfolding traditions in China, Germany and Spain in as early as 1480.
