Before you Start...This guide is written assumming that you will have two computers. One running FS and one running the avionics. We'll refer to them as “FS Computer” and “Avionics Computer”.(However the procedure will be similar if you are running on a single computer or multiple computers.)

Set Realistic ExpectationsFlight simulation has progressed rapidly over the last few years with the release of many pieces of 'plug and play' hardware and numerous addon software utilities. All of these amazing products allow us to bring a taste of a high fidelity flight simulator within our reach, something that use to only be available to airlines and large companies due to their expense and complexity.

With the correct hardware and software you will quickly be able to replicate a highly detailled, amazing looking flight simulator that will fully immuse you into the flightdeck.

However....Please remember, to achieve this you will need to become familiar with setting up a basic computer network, learning how to interact with many software programs, and how to diagnose simple problems.

It will take a little time to get everything adjusted 100%, but whether you are building a full flightdeck or adding some additional monitors and switches, the satisfaction you will feel after building, configuring and flying your own flight simulator will be well worth it.


Pre-Requisits

Setup your computer network :Bearing that in mind, your first task is to create a Local Area Network (LAN) and get your FS Computer and Avionics computer talking. It is important to assign a “STATIC” IP Address to all of your simulator computers.

Connect and Setup your Jetmax Monitors:You need to connect the computer monitors in your Jetmax to the Graphics card outputs on your Avionics computer. This usually consist of 4 connections:Monitor 1 : Primary Flight Display (PFD) /Navigation Display (ND)Monitor 2 : Upper Engine Display / EICASMonitor 3 : CDUMonitor 4 : Lower Display / MFD

If you right-click on the Windows desktop and select “Screen Resolutions” you will see the multiple monitors connected to your computer. You should see 4 monitors. Do not proceed until your computer has sucessfully detected all of the monitors.

This dialog also lets you arrange and set the resolution of each monitor.You should arrange your monitors 1-4 as per the picture below.Note how the tops of the monitors are all inline and the resolution is set to the 'native /recommended resolution' for the selected monitor.

As a guide, these would be :Screen 1 resolution should be = 1366 x 768Screen 2 resolution should be = 1024 x 768Screen 3 resolution should be = 1024 x 768Screen 4 resolution should be = 768 x 1024

On monitors 2-4 select “Extend desktop to this monitor” from the 'Multiple Displays' dropdown.

On monitor 4 we recommend that you set 'Orientation' to “Portrait Flipped”.This is because the lower display has to be mounted with a 90 degree rotation for sizing. Portrait flipped will rotate the graphic display so that the top of the display references the top of the physical monitor.

Before InstallationBelow are listed the Programs and download locations of the software required to setup your JetMax.There is an initial setup that is documented below, and once this has been completed a “Jetmax Launcher” icon will be placed on your desktop.

The setup steps have been listed in a logical sequence, but you are able to go back and make adjustments at any time.

Download the Required SoftwareOn the FSX/P3D computer you need to Install :

1. FSX or Prepar3D2. Registered FSUIPC + WIDESERVER

For FS9, FSX and P3D you will need a licenced version of “FSUIPC4”.This is used to interface data between the Flight simulator and the Sim-Avionics software.Many other pieces of addon software for flight simulator also use this interface and it also contains some very useful joystick calibration and configuration tools.FSUIPC can be downloaded here : http://fsuipc.simflight.com/beta/FSUIPC4.zipFSUIPC for FSX/P3D purchased here : http://secure.simmarket.com/pete-dowson-fsuipc4.phtml

The Sim-Avionics Server application needs to communicate with the Flight Simulator, and it is possible to run the Server application on the same computer as Flight Simulator, however for ease of access and to not restrict Flight Simulators performance it is recommended that you run the Server application on the Avionics Computer (or an additional seperate networked computer).

To run the Server on the Avionics Computer you will also require a licenced version of “WideFS”.WideFS for FSX/P3D purchased here : http://secure.simmarket.com/pete-dowson-widefs7.phtmlFor information : WideFS can be downloaded here : http://fsuipc.simflight.com/beta/WideFS.zip(A version of the WideFS client is included in the Jetmax Installer, but you will need to install and register WideFS on the FS Computer)Please refer to the WideFS Installation and setup guides if additional information is required.

Connect Your HardwareConnect the hardware to the computers with USB cables.

Note:Your Avionics Computer may not have enough USB ports to connect all of the hardware.In which case you will need to purchase a USB Hub from your local computer store.This will allow you to connect multiple USB devices to a single USB Port on your computer.

Detailled Installation Guide

Begin the Installation on the Avionics ComputerAt this point you are ready to install the Avionics software and can now :

Run the latest Sim-Avionics Jetmax Installer on the Avionics computer.** IMPORTANT : Be sure to Select the “Avionics” components during the installation

At the end of the installer it will automatically run a Monitor Setup Utility.

Monitor Setup UtilityThis utility program will help you to position the avionics displays on the correct monitors.

1. Check all monitors are dectected : Press the “Check Monitor Detection” button.A Red, Yellow and Blue test pattern will be drawn on all 4 of your monitors, Including the CDU.

Verify that the test pattern was displayed on ALL of the Jetmax monitors before proceeding.

2. If all monitors displayed the test pattern continue by pressing “Start Monitor Detection”.Here you will assign each avionics display to a monitor.

3. Press “Assign First Monitor”

A test pattern will be displayed on a monitor for a few seconds.When the pattern is removed you should click on the corresponding monitor in the Jetmax graphic to assign the correct avionics display.

4. After selecting the monitor on the graphic you should press “Assign Next Monitor” again to assign the remaining monitors.

5. When all 4 monitors have been assigned – Click “Finish”

6. You are now returned to the first screen showing a summary of the monitors that you have assigned and the option to “Save Assignments”

7. After Saving the assignments you can close the program.

This place the avionics in the correct positions, however some manual adjustments may be necessary to 'fine tune' the position of each display to fit exactly within the panel opening.

Please see the section on “Fine Tuning Display Positions” when installation is complete and the avionics are running.


Interface SetupNow the Switches and Annunciators on the Jetmax need to be configured.Don't worry - we have done this for you and the supplied interface data file just needs to be imported.

1. After Closing the “Monitor Setup Utility” the SYSBoard Interface controller program will automatically run.(If it doesn't then you can run SYSBoard Interface from the Start menu.)

2. After the program has “Initialized” it will say “Running...”

3. Press “Enable Program Mode” to expand the window and display the configuration options.

4. Verify that 4 Interface Boards are detected :FDS CDU V9JETMAX MULTICOMJETMAX 737 MCPThe 4th board is the Switch and Annunciator interface card and the name may vary slightly.

5. You can now import the supplied data file by selecting the menu :Import/Export > Import File


6. You should now select the JETMAX_BASE_IMPORT.INI

7. The Program will now ask you select the Jetmax Interface card. You can do this via the dropdown or by pressing any button on the Jetmax Main Instrument Panel. (ie. move the landing gear lever Up/Down)

8. The Board Selector box will automatically close.

9. Select the CDU Assignment Tab – to assign the CDU.● After selecting the tab, Press any button on the CDU.

(The Interface board ID number will be displayed at the top of the page.)● Click the “Assign CPT CDU” button to assign the detected board.


10. If you have the Optional – Jetmax NavCom Radio Select the Radio Assignment Tab – to assign the Jetmax Multicom Radio.

● After selecting the tab, Press any button on the Jetmax Multiccom Radio.(The Interface board aID number will be displayed at the top of the page.)

● Click the “Assign CPT Multicom or Jetmax NavCom1” button to assign the detected board.

11. If you have the optional Jetmax TransponderTo Assign the Transponder :

● Press any button on the Jetmax Transponder.(The Interface board ID number will be displayed at the top of the page.)

● Click the “Assign Transponder” button to assign the detected board.

12. You should now press the “Save” button on the toolbar to save the imported data and close the program.

Your Interface setup is now complete.


Configuring WideclientWideclient is a utility used to communicate with FlightSim.

The final step on the Avionics computer setup is to add the 'Static IP Address' of the FS Computer to the WideClient.ini file. This is so the WideClient program can connect and communicate with the Flight Simulator.

After closing the SYSBoard Interface program the Wideclient.ini file will automatically open.(If if doesn't you can open it manually from \Sim-Avionics\WideFS\Wideclient.ini)

At the top of the file is an entry :ServerIPAddr=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

You need to replace the xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx with the correct IP address of you Flight sim Computer.

ie. the entry may read :ServerIPAddr=192.168.0.100

Save the file when you have added the address and exit.


Requesting your Jetmax Application KeyThe final step is to request an Application Key to unlock the Server program.

After Closing the Wideclient.ini file the Server program will be launched.(If it doesn't you can open it manually from \Sim-Avionics\Server\Server.exe)

When the Server program first starts it looks for your unique activation key. If this key is not found then the registration window will be displayed.

When this window is display you should copy the Computer ID displayed in the window and send it to :[email protected]

Please also include in this email :Your NameYour Computer IDDate of PurchaseState it's for a “JetMax registration”

Once we receive your registration request and confirm your purchase we will generate you a unique Activation Key to unlock your Server. We will aim to process all Activation Key requests within 24 hours from receipt of initial email.

When you received your Activation Key or if you already have your Activation Key, you should carefully enter your Registration Name and Activation Key into the boxes on the Server startup screen and press OK.

Please note that for security reasons this key is unique to you and your hardware.If you change your hardware or network configuration your Server may require a new key.If this happens please send an email to [email protected] stating the above information and a very brief reason for the new key request and we will generate you a new activation key.

Congratulations your Avionics Computer is now ready to fly.

You can start all of the programs easily by using the “JETMAX Launcher” icon found on your

desktop.








Begin the Installation on the FS ComputerAt this point you are ready to install the software on the FS Computer and can now :

Run the latest Sim-Avionics Jetmax Installer on the FS computer.** IMPORTANT : Be sure to Select the “FlightSim” components during the installation

At the end of the installer it will automatically run a Jetmax Setup Utility to install the Sim-Avionics aircraft into Flightsim and assist with the configuration of your Throttle Quadrant.

Jetmax Setup UtilityThis utility program will install the aircraft files and also help you to setup the Throttle Quadrant.

1. Close Flight Simulator2. Select your Main Flight Fimulator Folder3. Press “Install Aircraft”


4. Press “Start TQ Calibration“ to setup the Jetmax Throttle Quadrant in FS.

5. The next steps are to calibrate the Throttle Axis and make the required button assignments in FS.Start by pressing “Dectect TQ”


6. You will then be asked to press a button on the TQ or move a Fuel Cuttoff Switch. This action allows the utility program to detect the TQ.

7. After pressing a button you will see a detection message. (Depending on the position of your Fuel Cutoff Switches this may instantly detect the TQ.)Please note : the Joystick number will depend on how many other joystick you have connected to your FS Computer.

8. You should now Continue to “Calibrate Throttles”


9. Move both throttles forwards and backwards so that the end points can be determined.

10. Continue to calibrate the Flaps, Speedbrake and Steering Tiller.


11. After calibrating the Steering Tiller, Press “Save Configuration” and Close the program.

Congratulations your Jetmax TQ and FS Computer is now ready to fly.

Starting the Jetmax for a flight

Before your first flight you should :

Run FSX / P3D● Select the Sim-Avionics 737 aircraft● load required fuel● Start the engines● Save as default flight

Start the Avionics ComputerClick on the “Jetmax Launch” icon on the desktop to launch the avionics


Server ConfigurationThe Server is the heart of the system and has a number of configuration options available to you.

● General Server options can be found on the Server > Control Panel Tab(Settings saved automatically when the Server is closed)

● Aircraft Specific Options can be found on the Server > Aircraft Detail Tab(Settings saved via the Aircraft Specific > Save Aircraft menu)

Some of the more frequently changed items are listed below:

System LogicBy default the Server will be ready to go as a 737 / 777 depending on your package and the aircraft systems will be “Forced to ON” meaning you can start flying instantly as soon as you start the programs.

This is great for a quick start, but also means that you cannot use the Overhead.exe User interface to control the systems manually.

● If you want to control the systems manually then you will need to UN-CHECK the “Force All Systems ON” checkbox on the Control Panel Tab.

Start with IRS AlignedThis checkbox is found on the Control Panel Tab and is used to override the IRS logic.If the Checkbox is OFF you will need to align the IRS's using the Aft Overhead panel and set the initial position in the CDU POS INIT Page before the PFD and ND are fully available.If the Checkbox is ON the IRS's are always aligned and allows you to start flying a bit quicker.

Weight in KG's or LB'sThis option is found on the Aircraft Details tab and sets the weight unit used on the EICAS and in the CDU.** Remember to 'Save' this change.

Flight Director – Wing ModeThis sets the PFD Flight Director style to the single cue 'wing' format.** Remember to 'Save' this change.

Alternate 737 Engine DisplayThis displays additional engine parameters on the EICAS display. This display option is use by some airlines.** Remember to 'Save' this change.

Display Clock Info on PFD/NDThis enables clock information to be displayed at the bottom of the PFD.The time can either show as Real UTC (derived from the pc clock) or FS UTC. The FS UTC format is selected on the Control Panel Tab > “Use FS UTC Time”** Remember to 'Save' this change.


Setup your Yoke and PedalsAdditional FlightSim Controls Configuration

We've added tools to keep the 'Jetmax' hardware configuration as simple as possible, but you will still need to assign and calibrate your own yoke/joystick and pedals within the Flight Simulator.

These can be assigned via the standard FS controls or via FSUIPC controls.We recommend using the FSUIPC control because this allows you to set null zones and control curves to set the charateristics to your liking.

It is especially important that your RUDDER pedals are assigned via FSUIPC because this will allow for the crossover between Steering Tiller and Rudder control as the airspeed increases.

These axis are assigned in the menu FSUIPC > Assign Axis (tab)Once assigned they are then calibrated on the Joystick Calibration (tab)

Additional InformationTCP_Client.exe

This module is used to communicate between the Sim-Avionics Server application and Sim-Avionics Clients.It is automatically started when ever a client program is started.As the Clients are running on the same computer as the Server the TCP_Client IP Address should be 127.0.0.1 to reference the local computer loopback IP Address. (So that it talks to the same computer)No Action is required after running the Jetmax Installer

Restart_Client.exe

This module is installed onto the FlightSim computer during installation and can be used to trigger a shutdown of the FlightSim computer from the CDU at the end of a session.

The program is automatically added to the Startup menu, so it will run when the computer starts, but if you want to use this functionality you will need to edit : \Sim-Avionics\Restart_Client\CONFIG.ini and set the SERVER_IP_ADDRESS to your Avionics Computer IP Address. This is also the IP Address that is displayed on the 'Server' Main Tab.

[SETTINGS]SERVER_IP_ADDRESS=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx <--- Avionics Computer IP Address

The Restart_Client will need to be closed and restarted for the new IP Address to take effect.

The Restart_Client.exe doesn't have a visble window and sits in the systray on the bottom right of your taskbar (near the clock). Right-Click on the icon and select “Exit” to close.

Fine Tuning Display Positions

The Monitor Setup Utility positions the display onto the correct screen, but some manual adjustment maybe require to position the display exactly within the panel opening and for the optimal viewing angle.

Adjustments are made via the keyboard and mouse.

To adjust a display :1. Use the mouse to 'click' on the display that you want to adjust.2. Press the 'A' key to switch to Adjustment mode. (A green box will be draw around the display)3. Using the Arrow keys you can move the display.4. Using the NumPad + and – keys you can adjust the size of the display.5. When you are happy with the position Press 'A' again to exit Adjustment Mode.6. Press “S” to Save the changes.

Repeat for each display.

Testing

You are now ready to start testing the system.

● Set the Landing Gear Lever to DOWNSet the Flap Lever to UP (fully forwards)Set the Throttles to IDLE (fully backwards)Set the Speedbrake to DOWN (fully forwards)

● Switch the FS Computer and Avionics computer OFF● Start the FS Computer● Start the Avionics Computer

● On the FS Computer : Run FSX / P3D○ Load your default flight set earlier. It is important that the Sim-Avionics 737 aircraft is loaded.

● On the Avionics Computer : Run the “Jetmax Launcher” Icon on the Desktop

● The Jetmax programs will be started by the Jetmax Launcher.When all of the programs have started the Launcher will close.

Visual CheckYou should see the PFD, ND, EICAS and CDU displays.You should see numbers in the Autopilot 7 segment displays.You should see 3 green Gear Down lights above the landing gear lever.

Test the Interfaces● Press the MFD ENG button just above the Engine display.

This will enable the secondary engine instruments on the Lower Display.Press the MFD ENG button again to switch off the lower display.


Test the Autopilot● Turn the HDG and/or Altitude knobs on the Autopilot.

The HDG and Altitude values in the 7 segment display should change and you should see the HDG bug move on the HDG and Target Altitude change on the PFD.

● Set the Captains Flight director OFF then ON and verify the action on the PFD.This switch is located on the bottom left of the Autopilot, just left of the N1 button.

Test the Throttle Quadrant :

Test the Throttles● Move the Left Throttle and observer the Left engine power setting on the EICAS.● Move the Right Throttle and observer the Right engine power setting on the EICAS.● Pull the Reverse Thrust Levers up and observe the engines engage into REV

Test the Flaps● Move the Flap lever to position 1

○ The Flap 1 light on the Flaps gauge should start to flash. This means that the flaps are moving towards position 1. When the flaps reach position 1 the light will stop flashing and remain lit.

● Move the Flap Lever to position 5○ The Flap 1 light on the Flaps gauge should start to flash. This means that the flaps

are moving away from position 1. The Flaps 2 light will then start to flash as the flaps approach the flaps 2 position. The Flaps 5 light will then start to flash as the flaps continue towards the Flaps 5 position.When the Flaps reach Flaps 5 the light will stop flashing and remain lit.

● Continue testing the remaining Flaps positions to Flaps 40 and confirm with the Flaps lights.● Then return the Lever to the UP position.

○ If no lights are lit on the Flaps gauge then the Flaps are in the UP Position.

Test the Speedbrake/Spoilers● Press the MFD SYS button on the main panel above the EICAS display to display the Flight

Controls synoptic page on the Lower Display.● Move the speedbrake lever fully backwards and you should see the spoilers deploy on the

Lower Synoptic.● Move the speedbrake lever fullt forwards to stow the Spoilers.

** On the Ground it is not possible to fully test the speedbrake, this needs to be done in the air, but if the spoilers deploy then we know the lever is working.

Test the TO/GA and A/T Disconnect buttons● Place you right hand on the throttle levers.

The TO/GA buttons can be found just below your index and middle fingers.The Auto Throttle (A/T) disconnect buttons can be found in the ends of the throttle knobs and pressed with you thumb.There are 2 TO/GA buttons and 2 A/T disc switches, which allows both the Captain (using his right hand on the throttle) and the F/O (using his left hand on the throttle) easy accesss.Either of the TO/GA or A/T Disc buttons can be pressed – you're not required to press both.


To Test :● Ensure the Engines are running and at Idle● On the Autopilot, switch the Left F/D ON switch – to ON.

Verify that “F/D” is displayed on the PFD.● On the Autopilot, switch the “A/T ARM” switch – to ARM

Verify the “ARM” is displayed on the Flight Mode Annunciator (FMA) on the top of the PFD ● Press either TO/GA switch with you fingers.● The Flight Mode Annunciators(FMA) should change to “N1” and the engines will spool up.

You may also get a Take Off Config Warning, because you have advanced the thrust while the ParkingBrake is ON and the Flaps are UP. - Please ignore this warning

● Once the engines have spooled up you should press the A/T Disconnect button twice with your thumb. 2 Clicks.... “Click.. Click”You can now move the throttles slightly to regain control and pull them back to IDLEThe first click of the A/T Disconnect was to disconnect the Auto Throttle.The FMA changes from N1 mode back to ARM mode.The second click resets the A/T caution an stops the red A/T RST light from flashing on the Main Panel.

Test the CDU● There may be a message displayed on the CDU if there is Press the CLR (Clear) KEY● You can the press the Line Select Key 1 (LSK1 – top left) to select FMC● Verify that the Menu keys work such as INIT, RTE, PROG● Use the keypad and verify that letters and numbers are written to the scratchpad

Test the Optional Multicom RadioOn Startup the Radio defaults to the COM1 positionCOM1, COM2, NAV1, NAV2, ADF1 modes are selected using the selector keysThe Left 7 segment display shows the “active frequency” of the selected modeThe Right 7 segment display shows the “Standby frequency” of the selected modeSelecting different modes will set the applicable value in the Active and Standby windows

● Select COM1● Change the Standby frequency using the rotary knob● Press Transfer to move the Standby Frequency to the Active Frequency

Test the Optional Transponder (XPNDR)On Startup the XPNDR will show the current Squawk code.To change the Squawk code :

● Press CLR – The display will show “- - - -”● Enter the new 4 digit number● Changing the mode on the XPNDR will change the TCAS mode on the ND
