As the leaves start to fall, a certain mood of contemplation and reflection begins to settle. Our programme this season reflects this autumnal frame of mind with a whole smorgasbord of events. If spoken word is your thing, join us for a panel debate with irma Kurtz on apologies; dispute the duties and joys of grandparenting with virginia ironside or thrash out whether we would all be better off without religion with former Lib Dem MP evan Harris and award-winning journalist anne Karpf.

If arts and culture is your bag, book for Sunday Morning, a new contemporary dance performance from choreographer Hagit Yakira, or get snap happy at a photography workshop in and around Camden Town.

And as Chanukah approaches, bring the kids and come and join the party at our Brent Cross extravaganza.

We combined charity with comedy through our Comedy with a Cause and Big Bra auction. The event raised £5000 for the JCC and Cancerkin, a charity that provides free services to breast cancer patients across London and the Home Counties.

___ 30 riders rode the london to Cambridge Bike Ride raising over £5000 for social action projects at the JCC and Tzedek. We’re really happy to have improved on last year’s turnout of 20 riders.

___ Over 130 people volunteered for one of five

JCC Mitzvah Day projects. We donated over four full car loads of food items to the New North London Synagogue Asylum Drop-In Centre, sang for the residents of Spring Grove Care Home, cleared, dug and planted for the World Peace Garden and Fitzjohns Primary School and created a beautiful mural in the children’s A&E waiting room at the Royal Free hospital.

___ Our Bubbulas Bump and Baby Fair raised £1700 for the JCC and JCORE. 5,473 nappies were also collected for the JCC nappy campaign.

looKing DeeP WiTHin ouRselves:In line with the JCC’s commitment to Going Green, we’re taking positive steps to reduce our negative impact

on the environment. We carried out an eco-audit, and now monitor how we use resources, making a sustainability check-list for our events and thinking up innovative ideas around the office.

Here are a few of our social endeavours since last Rosh Hashana:

___ As part of our Darfuri Women’s Befriending Project, we’ve established six one-to-one relationships between members of the Jewish and Darfuri community and we’re working to develop more.

___ Through Cocktails with a Cause we raised funds for Magen David Adom and The Hope Foundation.

___ As part of our global village series of events, seeking to engage the Jewish community in issues related to global poverty and development, we had over 80 people attend are we breaking our promises on poverty? and Haiti: one Year on.

___ At The Home We Build Together, over 50 people came to hear the testimonies of two refugee academics discussing what it means to be forced out of your home and country and what it takes to build a new life and career in a new place.

At Tu B’shvat amongst the Trees and Hampstead Heath nature Tour, over 40 people got in and amongst nature, reflecting on environmental issues from a Jewish perspective.

___ Through the screening of Praying with lior, we joined Norwood and the Judith Trust’s Inclusion Campaign, supporting the participation of people with learning disabilities and/or mental ill-health in Jewish religious and cultural life. Come join us at our Inclusion Campaign event (page 32).

___ At our Purim Party we worked with GIFT to collect and make mishloach manot for 150 people in need.

___ In collaboration with Point Blank, our interfaith Film Production workshop brought together ten youths from Jewish and Muslim communities to co-produce two amazing short films.

JCC ventures is proud to include the following sustainable features in the new community centre building:

We will use natural ventilation as much •as possible, with air cooling only in the intensely used spaces where we really need it - the multi-purpose hall, screening room and dance studio

Other low and zero carbon technologies will •be included such as solar water heating and photo voltaic cells for converting solar power into electricity

We will harvest rainwater to reduce mains •water use, and take measures to keep use of water on site to a minimum (water-efficient taps, showers, WCs)

We will use energy-efficient artificial lighting•

the building is orientated with the large •areas of glazing facing north eastwards which gives us lots of natural daylight while keeping solar gain low, decreasing the range in temperatures naturally caused by the sun. this makes the building temperature more easy to regulate, using less energy

We will encourage biodiversity to the site •through a brown roof, bat boxes, trees and landscaping in the piazza

At the JCC, we try to price our events to make them accessible to all. This season, we’ve made an effort to keep our prices at roughly the same level as they’ve been for several years.

We offer concessions for students, members of youth

movements, pensioners and the unemployed – if you need them, just phone and ask.

We know that sometimes it’s hard to gauge who will be at our events, and sometimes you want to know there will be a small group of people like you, so that you won’t be on your own – that’s why we introduced our successful Olive initiative a couple of seasons ago. The only criteria for being part of Olive are that you need to be 50+ and want to meet some new and interesting

people. What it means is that if you come to one of our regular events, there will be a JCC representative and a small group of people like you attending (we’ll let you know how and where to meet them). These events are open to everyone - there will just be a group of you attending along with everyone else. Enjoy.

Be part of an innovative, exciting project for passionate and talented young Jewish musicians.

Our ensemble will be led by professional musicians and will explore a variety of challenging and exciting music. We hope that our ensemble will perform in public venues across London.

Our pilot workshop will explore the eclectic world of Jewish Music from Klezmer to Sephardic melodies, coached by renowned Klezmer cellist, Francesca Ter-Berg.

You will:

• Gain an insight into the eclectic world of Jewish music

• Improve your improvising skills

• Learn to play by ear

This will also be YOUR chance to speak up and tell us about the kinds of music you’d like to explore when we launch our ensemble next year.

All participants must be minimum grade 5 in their chosen instrument.

Participants must be aged between 14 and 18 years.

The JCC Youth Music Ensemble Pilot Workshop has been set up as a joint collaboration between the JCC and the JMI (Jewish Music Institute).

A night of the most exciting and unusual video work coming out of Israel, with an exclusive discussion with some of the artists themselves and some great music. These artists, who have been shown in galleries and exhibitions around Israel, in New York and across Europe, are creating meditative and provocative work about identity, ritual, family, food and prayer.

Featuring work by:

Shuli Nachshon – a Moroccan Israeli artist with a particular passion for work about women and their relationship to faith;

Dafna Shalom – who examines the politics of identity and dislocation; Boaz Arad – an artist and lecturer from Tel Aviv who offers a dark humoured take on family and tradition; Gilad Ratman – who uses the absurd and the grotesque to satirise Jewish history; Tali Navon – a young film-maker with an interest in nature and scale; and Yifat Laist-Ferman – a Tel Aviv-based artist whose work explores her Yiddish and Polish roots.

Followed by a Q&A with Shuli Nachshon and Tali Navon.

This last year we’ve featured some of the leading lights of Jewish culture and ideas – from Jesse Eisenberg to Claudia Roden, from Howard Jacobson to Maureen Lipman. We’ve spent the year discussing everything from the Y-word in football to the J-word on British TV, from regional turmoil in the Middle East to the Jewishness of the new Labour leader.

A 5-star, “riveting” solo-show fresh from the Edinburgh Festival. “Written with heart, tragedy and a fair balance of true comedy” by Desirée Gezentsvey, and delivered in a “tour-de-force performance” by actor Yael Gezentsvey (Fringe Review/Theatre Guide). Nuclear Family is a comedic drama set in green New Zealand on the eve of the Chernobyl disaster, following a colourful bunch of Venezuelan and Soviet Jewish immigrants as they are forced to question whether freedom and control over one’s destiny are only illusions.

A screening of ‘The Secret Life of the Manic Depressive’ by Stephen Fry.

Stephen Fry’s 2006 BBC documentary is a fantastically honest, revealing and funny examination of bipolar disorder – an illness that affects around four million people in the UK.

We are very pleased to provide another chance to see the first part of this “bold, touching, unsentimental film” (The Guardian) and use it as a springboard for discussions about mental health, learning disability and inclusion in the Jewish community.

The discussion that follows will include speakers Dr Annette Lawson OBE, Chair of The Judith Trust, Rabbi David Mason of Muswell Hill Synagogue who has direct experience of these issues from a parental point of view, and representatives of JAMI.

We will be asking questions and seeking answers - how and why does the community exclude people, and how can it work to be inclusive?

Combining 8 and 16mm footage from over a decade, the film navigates the intimate lives of five brothers and their mother as they experience the pains of exile and the joys of family bonding.

Exploring the politics of belonging, displacement and sexuality, the film examines the hard decisions one family has to make and the intractable bonds that unite its members in the face of difficult life choices. Throughout, Tomer frames this quest in terms of its greater social and political significance: the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, tensions between Israel’s Arabs and Jews and its secular and ultra-orthodox citizens, and the struggle for gay/human rights.

Tomer Heymann was born in Kfar Yedidya, Israel in 1970. His award-winning documentaries include The Way Home (2009) and Paper Dolls (2006) which won three awards at the 2006 Berlin Film Festival.

For the second year, the Three Faiths Forum together with the JCC for London, the Art and Christianity Enquiry and the Radical Middle Way bring you a vibrant contemporary arts festival celebrating inter-cultural friendship during National Interfaith Week.

Over the past year, artists from different backgrounds have been collaborating on

visual art projects, creating pieces exploring faith relations and how people from different communities can bring about social change. This provides the stimulus and backdrop for two weeks of events including workshops, seminars, women-only days, school-linking days, and social action events.

A3The A3 project explores the letterforms and their symbolic connotations in the three faiths. Lettering artist Soraya Syed Sanders, designer Francesca Ulivari, artist Orly Orbach and graphic designers Edward Johansson and Mukhtar Sanders will produce collaborative pieces of work based on the letter ‘A’ in their respective religions. Together, the artists will produce a series of silkscreened posters reflecting the outcome of their research.

Night/LightEmerging artist Hannah ‘Habibi’ Hopkin will create works of typographical art in neon light, juxtaposing the idea of Islamic calligraphy and universal religious sayings. Emer Costello will go on to create a diptych in film, which

will document simple movements through nature’s reflections. This collaboration aims to explore the symbolism of light in the context of the modern urban environment, by creating positive moments of enlightenment in some of the city’s darkest areas.

Prayers at the ThresholdTaking the idea of thresholds, artists Orly Orbach, Mo Negm and Camilla Howalt will look at doorways and entrances of religious and domestic buildings. They will go on to explore the idea of a threshold as a place of risk and uncertainty that therefore requires a prayer or blessing before entering. They will look at the physicality of doorways, as well as how beliefs manifest themselves in architecture, decoration and art.

This season we explore two classic novellas - Ghassan Kanafani’s Men in the Sun and S. Yizhar’s Khirbet Khizeh. Join writer and lecturer Ariel Kahn and celebrated Palestinian novelist Samir El-Youssef at Joseph’s Bookstore for an illuminating discussion.

1948 was a crucial year for both Israeli and Palestinian identity. For Israel, it heralded the long-awaited birth of the state. For the Palestinians, it brought the Nakba and the beginning of exile and resistance. Ghassan Kanafani is seen as the father of the Palestinian novel. His Men in the Sun is set predominantly in Iraq, and deals with the challenges of migration and human trafficking.

S. Yizhar’s 1949 novella about the expulsion of Palestinian villagers from the titular village of the Israeli army is a masterpiece of modern Hebrew.

Prior knowledge of the books will enhance your enjoyment, but is not essential.

There are many common questions among new grandparents: How do I stay involved - but not too involved - in my grandchildren’s lives? How do I make sure not to step on my childrens’ toes on parenting issues? How can I make sure my grandchildren love me? How much of my time do I really want to spend babysitting them?

Today grandparents are much younger in age, spirit and outlook and have quite different views to 40 years ago. Many grandparents find themselves in a dilemma: they are still enjoying an active

social and work life and do not necessarily want to look after their grandchildren, but they are unable to express this to their children. They are unsure of what their role is regarding their grandchildren and struggle with their relationship with their children.

This evening debates these dilemmas with, amongst others, acclaimed journalist Virginia Ironside, agony aunt at Woman magazine and problem page editor for the Sunday Mirror and Belinda Harding, chairwoman of the Grandparents Association of Great Britain.

In session one you will learn what cake to use, how to cover a cake with royal icing, what sugar dough is and how to use it. For generations, the new Jewish

year has been greeted with apple and honey,

symbolising the hope for a sweet year ahead. Last year we

had an idea to create a network of hives throughout the Jewish community that would provide this honey. It’s a concept that has Jewish roots, is achievable and has the potential to involve people of any background!

This is about learning from one another and

creating opportunities to engage in a Jewish activity,

whatever your background, level of practice or involvement.

It also provides a way to look into important sustainability issues through a Jewish lens.

Whether you are already a master

bee keeper or just want to find out more,

we’d love to hear from you. We’re connecting people

and supporting advocates who will take this project to their community spaces, synagogues, local schools and private gardens or allotment sites.

HOnEy tO tHE bEE

With an eye to the upcoming JCC Bee Project (see page 66), through which we hope to inspire a new generation of beekeepers, and with Rosh Hashanah just around the corner, get stuck into our buzzing afternoon. Come along before or stay on after and walk amongst the chickens, cows, ducks, geese, goats, horses, pigs and sheep in this farm in the heart of Camden.

For the curious, come and learn how to identify bees, how bees make honey, and about the bee lifecycle. You can also find out what it takes to be a beekeeper, how much time, money and space it requires, what equipment is needed and how to harvest the honey.

For the foodies, we’ll then move into the kitchen and taste a range of different honeys and learn not just how they have been produced, but also what honey compliments which foods and how to cook with them.

For the enthusiasts, there will also be a see-through observation hive so you can take a look at what goes on inside. If the weather allows we’ll take a walk over to the resident beehive. Professional beekeepers will explain to us what’s what from a distance.

An energetic and creative workshop for anyone with an interest in performance, led by the brilliant Israeli choreographer Hagit Yakira.

We will share experiences and memories of Sunday mornings in order to create a piece about our own stories, told in our own expressive ways. We will play with movement, music, storytelling, jokes, drawing and theatre games.

Through this workshop you can also be part of the ‘Sunday Morning’ show at Jackson’s

Lane on November 17th! We will create notes and drawings of your memories which will be part of the performance and an installation on the night.

There is no need to have previous experience – just bring your enthusiasm and passion for creativity and if you play a musical instrument you can always bring it along.
