Evening prayer, or Vespers, from the Latin word Vespera meaning “evening” is a worship service at the close of

the day that has its roots in the Jewish daily hours of prayer. In its transfer to the early Christian church and to

Vespers services today, it has kept its contemplative character, offering thanks for the mercies of the day, and

prayers for divine protection and the gift of inner peace. Vespers traditionally included the singing of psalms,

hymns and the canticle of Mary’s song Magnificat, as well as readings from scripture and the offering of prayers.

Psalm Prayer Leader: Let the incense of our repentant prayer ascend before you, O God, and let your loving

kindness descend upon us, that with purified hearts we may sing your praise with the church on earth and the whole heavenly host, and may glorify you forever and ever.

All: Amen Psalm 46 People sing verses in bold print.

1God is our ref- | uge and strength, a very present | help in trouble. 2Therefore we will not fear, though the | earth be moved, and though the mountains shake in the depths | of the sea; 3though its waters | rage and foam, and though the mountains tremble | with its tumult. 4There is a river whose streams make glad the cit- | y of God, the holy habitation of | the Most High. 5God is in the midst of the city; it shall | not be shaken; God shall help it at the | break of day. 6The nations rage, and the | kingdoms shake; God speaks, and the earth | melts away. 7The LORD of | hosts is with us; the God of Jacob | is our stronghold. 8Come now, regard the works | of the LORD, what desolations God has brought up- | on the earth; 9behold the one who makes war to cease in | all the world; who breaks the bow, and shatters the spear, and burns the | shields with fire. 10“Be still, then, and know that | I am God; I will be exalted among the nations; I will be exalted | in the earth.” 11The LORD of | hosts is with us; the God of Jacob | is our stronghold.

Psalm Prayer

Leader: Lord God, our refuge and strength, when raging waters rise up against your holy city, watch over it and keep it safe. Make us still in your presence, and bring an end to war and violence, that all people may dwell in safety along the river that flows in the city of God; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.

All: Amen

WORD Reading: John 8:31-38 (The Message Translation) 31-32 Then Jesus turned to the Jews who had claimed to believe in him. “If you stick with this, living out what I tell you, you are my disciples for sure. Then you will experience for yourselves the truth, and the truth will free you.” 33 Surprised, they said, “But we’re descendants of Abraham. We’ve never been slaves to anyone. How can you say, ‘The truth will free you’?” 34-38 Jesus said, “I tell you most solemnly that anyone who chooses a life of sin is trapped in a dead-end life and is, in fact, a slave. A slave is a transient, who can’t come and go at will. The Son, though, has an established position, the run of the house. So if the Son sets you free, you are free through and through. I know you are Abraham’s descendants. But I also know that you are trying to kill me because my message hasn’t yet penetrated your thick skulls. I’m talking about things I have seen while keeping company with the Father, and you just go on doing what you have heard from your father.”

Leader: Word of God. Word of life. All: Thanks be to God.

Reflection (sit)

Following the Reflection and some silence: Leader: Jesus said, I am the light of the world. All: Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness.
