Program OverviewJapan is a country rich in history and world modernization. The Japan Study Abroad Pro-gram focuses on Japanese culture and engages the student in learning through study and real life experiences. Students will spend three weeks in Japan, based in the city of Osaka, the third largest city in Japan. The program will be hosted by Shitennoji University, formerly known as International Buddhist University (IBU). Besides various learning activities on the SU campus, there will be a number of activities including excursions to downtown Osaka; Nara (location of the famed Daibutsu or Great Buddha statue and deer park); and Kyoto (the ancient capitol of Japan). Par-ticipants will also learn about the historical significance of traditional cultural topics such as flower arrangement, tea ceremony, calligra-phy and meditation. There will be free time to explore the surrounding area, shopping districts, and parks and great opportunities to meet Japanese university students.

course for Spring 2015: INTL 2990: STUDY ABROAD (3 credits) Please Note:

All program excursions require an extensive amount of walking including stairs and hills.

EligibilityParticipants must have a minimum GPA of

2.0 and be at least 18 years of age. The SLCC Study Abroad Application form and other forms must be completed by the appropriate deadline.

Pre-departure Orientations(to be arranged)

Participants are required to attend ALL pre-departure orientation sessions as well as ALL scheduled educational and cultural learning activities. In addition, students must complete all course requirements as assigned by the program leader. Parents, guardians, spouses, and guests are also invited to attend orientations.

* To make a payment, print the Japan Study Abroad payment form, fill it out, and take the form and payment to the SLCC cashier’s window (be sure to tell the cashier the payment is for the Japan Study Abroad). Bring one copy of the receipt to the Study Abroad Office and keep a copy for your records.

Cancellations/RefundsIf the trip is canceled prior to November 21,

2014, the deposit of $500.00 will be refunded in full. Further refunds for withdrawal from this program after the Application & Deposit Deadline, will be determined by the Study Abroad Director according to the recoverability of incurred costs and fees. Please see the complete cancellation/refund policy in the Study Abroad Handbook.

Financial AidMost financial aid (loans, grants,

scholarships) can be applied. The financial aid can only be used for SLCC credit. For more information, please contact the Financial Aid Office, 801-957-4410 or financialaid@slcc.edu.

PassportYou must have a valid

passport for the Japan Study Abroad trip. A copy of your passport is due November 7, 2014 in the Study Abroad Office. A minimum of 10 students is required for the Japan Study Abroad (12 students maximum). If you are seriously considering this Study Abroad, turn in your application and a copy of the receipt for the $500.00 deposit (nonrefundable) to the Study Abroad Office, CT 214, by November 7, 2014.
