MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN

DavidAsplund

WHTCC Chairman of the Board

It is an honor tohave the opportunityto serve you in theupcoming year asBoard Chair for theWoodland

Hills~Tarzana Chamber of Commerce for2011. I have been a member of thebusiness community in the Encino, Tarzanaand Woodland Hills sections of the valleyfor the past 17 years and appreciate thedepth and diversity of our businessconstituency. As a corporate member of theWoodland Hills~Tarzana Chamber ofCommerce, I understand the importance ofcorporate participation and service to thecommunity. I also have a deep appreciationfor the entrepreneurial spirit andcontributions of our small business ownerswhich I gained from my father who was asmall business owner most of his life.

I am pleased to represent the needs of ourbusiness community through this serviceopportunity with the WoodlandHills~Tarzana Chamber of Commerce. I amalso grateful to work for an organization,Providence Tarzana Medical Center, whichholds service to the community as a corevalue and practices it every day. I amespecially thankful to my wife, Audrey, andour family for allowing me this chance.

The Woodland Hills~Tarzana Chamber ofCommerce is the largest chamber in theSan Fernando Valley with a membership of713 businesses and has done a tremendousjob over the past three years of maintainingmembership in a poor economy. Memberscontinue to find the chamber an importantsource for outreach and marketing asevidenced by strong attendance atnetworking breakfasts (avg. 110participants), educational lunches (avg. 70participants) and mixers (avg. 140participants).

Much credit goes to Colleen Langford, 2010Board Chair. Diana Williams, ExecutiveDirector, has maintained the focus andenergy required to negotiate these un-certain financial times and has served theneeds of the business Continued page 10

By Diana Williams, Executive Director

We supported andpromoted oneanother. Members, board, and staff, together, WEMADE IT. We gotthrough 2010 andwe were successful.

Just look at the relationships, newfriends and sense of community weearned this year. It’s fun to imaginewhat we will realize in 2011!

2010 has been a great year for theWoodland Hills~Tarzana Chamber ofCommerce. It has been our opportunityto offer businesses, large and small, benefits that are unique to theirgrowth. Each of the 43 cities thatbuild our membership, gain bybuilding relationships with the largestChamber in the San Fernando Valley.

The smaller businesses find theextended sales force that we offer tothem a smart alternative to anincreased payroll. Each relationshipthey build, each listing they have inthe chamber directory and on thewebsite, each phone call that comes toour office looking for a company thatwe refer, are all part of their “free”sales team.

Showcasing that “communitymatters” is important. The largerbusinesses know that their localsupport is going to have a directimpact on the economy of ourcommunity. Their sponsorship dollarswith the chamber are used tostrengthen and support the smallbusinesses and the local community asa whole. A strong community createsstrength in business.

Your chamber staff came to workevery day with a positive attitude forour members and extended communityand accomplished some of thefollowing with your help. Here aresome of the highlights of 2010!

Congratulations to them for an outstanding year!

Although economic prognosticators tell us that the economy willcontinue in a slow growth mode for the first half of 2011, this yearhas promise of being a turn-around year. My goal as Board Chair isto make sure that the Woodland Hills~Tarzana Chamber ofCommerce is well positioned to serve the needs of our

businesses during another recovery year and into more prosperoustimes by supporting business growth opportunities and functionsthrough strong and steady leadership. For this reason, I am veryexcited about the Board of Directors we have assembled this year. Each is highly qualified and skilled and come from diverse businessbackgrounds. They bring the commitment and experience needed totake the chamber into a more vibrant economic era.

Here is to a fantastic 2011!

Rodger Sterling, Friend andMentor

“We make a living bywhat we get, but we makea life by what we give.”With those words byWinston Churchill, onehis favorite heroes, weremember RodgerSterling and what he gave

to the Chamber. As we kick off 2011 with the inauguralissue of the newsletter, we remember that this was his ideaand contribution. When Rodger was a Chamber boardmember he argued for and won the case that the Chamberneeded to communicate more with its members, and thusdesigned and implemented the newsletter. Rodger, whodied in 2009, was an ardent and vocal board member. Hewas active in Woodland Hills Chamber for years, and hadbeen president of the Calabasas Chamber twice. We misshis enthusiasm, his volunteerism and his unflagging senseof humor. As Churchill also famously said, “A joke is avery serious thing.” g

A Message from the2010 Outgoing~ChairColleen Langford

It has been apleasure andan honor to

serve as the2009-2010Chairman of theBoard for theWoodlandHills~TarzanaChamber of

Commerce. The Directors of the Boardwere professional, dedicated and adelight to work with. The Staffmembers who served with me, DianaWilliams, the Executive Director;Jennifer Svejda, our Director ofBusiness Development; and FeliciaPaust as Executive Assistant allworked with tireless dedication toserve the Chamber and its members. The three of them were an invaluablesource of support for me.

Our Board’s many successes can bedirectly credited to the Directors whogave their unending support in theevents that connected our communityand promoted local businesses. Ourmany accomplishments include theInstallation Gala, The GolfTournament, where we teamed up withLeukemia Lymphoma Society, the 4thAnnual Wine Festival and the 10thAnnual Family Festival in the Park. There were so many amazing eventsthis year that allowed our members toshowcase their services. All of theseevents were a great success this yearwith the hard work and dedication ofthe staff and committees and with allof the members of the Chamber andcommunity partaking in them.

As the Chairman of the Board, it wasmy desire to help business in ourcommunity survive this economic

time. The Woodland Hills~TarzanaChamber of Commerce has such anamazing ambassador program. It is asthough we had our own cheering squadfor every event down to each and everyribbon cutting. The WoodlandHills~Tarzana Chamber ofCommerce’s Ambassadors surpassedall of my expectations with promotingour community and the businessmembers.

In 2010 we were faced with manycontroversial events and opposingviews as well as having to say a finalgoodbye to some of our outstandingcommunity members such as: OurHonorary Mayor Mr. Michael Miller, who served in our community for over15 years. Mr. Lee Barry also left usthis year. He served in our prestigiousAmbassador Program. These are just toname a few. The Board of Directorsand the Staff Members rose to eachoccasion, serving with dignity andrespect for one another.

I want to thank all of my friends, colleagues, and especially my familyfor all of the love and support this year.My three children were at many of theevents (whether they wanted to be ornot). Congratulations to Baby Mel whowas consistently the youngest attendeeat these events. My loving husband hasbeen nothing but supportive andalways filled with encouragement. Myfamily is my core that gives me thestrength and determination to then giveto others. Thank you to my extendedfamily at the Holiday Inn for pickingup the slack when needed and allowingme to fulfill my commitmentsuccessfully at the WoodlandHills~Tarzana Chamber of Commerce. They did all of this with little whiningand crying!

Thank you for this opportunity. It hasbeen my pleasure.
