12/28/15 - FISHERMEN REPORT MEDIEVAL SHIPWRECK OFF ITALY’S SOUTHERN COAST - PUGLIA, ITALY—The remains of an 800-year-old wooden ship have been found in the Porto Cesareo Marine Protected Area, located near the tip of Italy’s “boot.” The shipwreck, which measures nearly 60 feet long, could “explain significant aspects of the coastline in medieval times and contribute to the historical reconstruction of the area,” underwater archaeologist Cristiano Alfonso of Salento University told The Local, Italy. Porto Cesareo was a fishing village during the medieval period. To read more about the archaeology of shipwrecks, go to "Shipwreck Alley." http://www.thelocal.it/20151228/centuries-old-shipwreck-found-off-salento-coast 12/23/15 - TUDOR DECORATIONS MAY HAVE SURVIVED LOST HAT - LONDON, ENGLAND—Tiny decorative objects recovered from the same area on the banks of the Thames River by eight different metal detectorists may have all come from the same Tudor-era hat or garment, according to archaeologist Kate Sumnall of the Museum of London. The early sixteenth-century artifacts are made from gold, enamel, and glass, and may have adorned furs or velvets. “These artifacts have been reported to me one at a time over the last couple of years. Individually they are all wonderful finds but as a group they are even more important. To find them from just one area suggests a lost ornate hat or other item of clothing. The fabric has not survived and all that remains are these gold decorative elements that hint at the fashion of the time,” she told The Guardian. To read more about London-based archaeology, go to "Haunt of the Resurrection Men." http://www.theguardian.com/culture/2015/dec/23/tiny-tudor-treasure-hoard-found-in-thames-mud 12/11/15 - ROMAN AND MEDIEVAL LEICESTER UNEARTHED - LEICESTER, ENGLAND—Construction work at the former site of a bus depot has given archaeologists the rare opportunity to examine the area at the corner of Southgates and Peacock Lane in central Leicester. Between the twelfth and sixteenth centuries, this area is thought to have been crowded with houses and shops. The team from University of Leicester Archaeological Services has uncovered stone-lined pits that may have been cisterns or used for storage, garbage pits, latrines, wells, boundary walls, and a cellar that may date to the late fifteenth

or sixteenth century. Under the medieval street surface, the researchers found the remains of two Roman streets with stone and timber buildings, floor surfaces and wall fragments, and coins, tableware, game pieces, bone hair pins, and jewelry that date from the second through the fourth centuries. “One of the Roman streets found on the site has never been seen before in Leicester and isn’t on any of our plans of the Roman city. This is a significant find and raises exciting new questions about the layout of the early Roman town and how it evolved through the Roman period,” archaeologist Mathew Morris said in a press release. To read more about Roman Britain, go to "Artifact: Roman Eagle Sculpture." http://www2.le.ac.uk/offices/press/press-releases/2015/december/archaeologists-unearth-new-evidence-of-roman-and-medieval-leicester 12/10/15 - WATLINGTON HOARD REWRITES ENGLAND’S EARLY MEDIEVAL HISTORY - LONDON, ENGLAND—The British Museum has unveiled a hoard of coins found by a metal detectorist who alerted an officer from the Portable Antiquities Scheme and assisted with the archaeological excavation. The hoard contains 186 coins, seven pieces of Viking jewelry, and 15 ingots. Some of the coins depict figures thought to represent King Alfred the Great of Wessex, who ruled from A.D. 871 to 899, and King Ceolwulf II of Mercia, who ruled from 874 to 879. Ceolwulf II has been largely forgotten by history, but the coins suggest that the two kings shared a powerful alliance as equals. “Here is a more complex political picture in the 870s which was deliberately misrepresented in the 890s after Alfred has taken over the whole of Ceolwulf’s kingdom,” Gareth Williams, curator of Early Medieval coinage at the British Museum, told The Telegraph. The coins were produced in both kings’ names, and in a number of different mints. “It sheds new light on a very poorly understood period in English history,” Williams said. To read about an early Anglo-Saxon discovery, go to "The Kings of Kent." http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/earth/environment/archaeology/12043749/British-Museum-unveils-unique-hoard-of-Viking-coins.html 12/9/15 - POSSIBLE TOMB OF SULEIMAN THE MAGNIFICENT FOUND IN HUNGARY - PÉCS, HUNGARY—In 2013, Norbert Pap of the University of Pécs announced the discovery of Turbék, a fortified town and Ottoman pilgrimage site that grew up around the burial site of Suleiman the Magnificent’s internal organs. Suleiman died in Hungary in 1566 during the siege of Szigetvar, and

although his body was returned to Constantinople, his heart and intestines were buried where he died. Pap and his team think they have found the remains of a building that could be the sultan’s tomb, a small mosque, a dervish monastery, and military barracks—all arranged in a formation that is compatible with a map of the town that dates to 1664. The building thought to be the sultan’s tomb has a deep pit, suggesting it had been looted in the late seventeenth century. Further excavations are needed to confirm the identification of the site. To read more, go to "Lost Tombs: In Search of History's Greatest Rulers." http://pte.hu/english/news/tomb_sultan_suleiman_szigetvar 12/8/15 - MEDIEVAL CASTLE WALLS UNEARTHED IN ENGLAND - GLOUCESTERSHIRE, ENGLAND—Archaeologists have unearthed an early twelfth-century castle keep wall in the exercise yard at the site of Gloucester Prison, which closed in 2013. The medieval castle also had an inner bailey and stables, and was surrounded by a series of concentric defensive walls and ditches, and had a drawbridge and a gatehouse. In the fifteenth century, the castle became a notorious county jail that was demolished in 1785 to build a new jail, designed by prison architect William Blackburn. That prison building had been expanded and remodeled several times through the 1960s. “It is a very rare opportunity to dig a Norman castle in a great historic city. We have recorded a part of Gloucester’s history that was once covered with the sands of time,” said project manager Cliff Bateman of Cotswold Archaeology. The team will cover the exposed remains to preserve the medieval walls now that the lot is scheduled for redevelopment. For more, go to "The Treasures of Rathfarnham Castle." http://www.cotswoldarchaeology.co.uk/excavating-gloucester-prison/ 12/7/15 - VIKINGS MAY HAVE BRAVED GREENLAND’S COOL WEATHER - NEW YORK, NEW YORK—It had been previously thought that the Vikings colonized Greenland during a period of well-documented good weather known as the Medieval Warm Period (A.D. 950-1250) and disappeared with the onset of the Little Ice Age (1300-1850). However, a new analysis of chemical isotopes in debris marking the advance of glaciers in southwest Greenland and Baffin Island suggests that the glaciers had neared or reached their later maximum Little Ice Age positions between 975 and 1275, during the period of the Viking occupation. “If the Vikings traveled to Greenland when it was cool, it’s a stretch to say

deteriorating climate drove them out,” Nicolás Young of Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory said in a press release. “It’s becoming clearer that the Medieval Warm Period was patchy, not global,” he explained. Scholars now think that the Vikings may have abandoned Greenland because of hostilities with the Inuit, a decline in the ivory trade, soil erosion brought on by grazing their imported cattle, or a return to European farms after the depopulation brought on by the Black Plague. For more, go to "The First Vikings." http://www.earth.columbia.edu/articles/view/3266

WEDNESDAY, April 20, 2016 the Groton Public Library, 52 Newtown Road, Groton, CT 06340, Tel. 860-441-6751, http://www.groton-ct.gov/library/directions.asp MONDAY, May 16, 2016 at the MDC Training Center MONDAY, June 20, 2016 at the MDC Training Center ALL OFFICERS – If your SCA membership expires on or before January 31, 2016, PLEASE send Anarra your new expiration date before January 15th. She needs it for her 4th Quarter Report. If your membership expires before April 30, 2016, she needs your new expiration date before March 15. Officer’s Reports Arts and Sciences – Alys du Bois - Alys gave us her Quarterly A&S report. She also wants to start up perhaps monthly A&S for bardic (maybe a bardic gathering at Sisuile’s place in the spring) dancing, silk painting (Anarra and Ana Ilevna still have some paints) game board making (there are Baron Salamala’s supplies and book—talk to Elizabeth or Eloise) and other projects. She is interested in making some archery tokens for the summer shoot event. Discuss with Eloise and Gwilym regarding their use. Anyone who teaches a class or takes a class at an event or hosts an A&S open to the Barony can tell Alys for her A&S report. Alys will post a reminder on the e-mail list. If we have a Baronial event that Alys can’t attend, remember to post the list of classes and who taught them to her for her report. Chatelaine – Gwenllian - Joe Catterman in Plainville may have found some sites for indoor fight practice. Gwenllian should get him in touch with Angus and Grimolfr. Aldith, new import from Caid, sat at gate all day at Yule and had a great time. Welcome Aldith! New person from AEthemark interested in getting involved here. Welcome! Chronicler – Johanna/Emme (Deputy) - Johanna wants a new deputy. No, really, she does. NEW DEPUTY!! It could be YOU! Contact Johanna if you are interested. Please send articles, stories, links, how-tos, recipes, photos, etc. And looky at the December Newsletter. It’ is soooooo pretty and full of Yule information and she got it done, WITH photos, in two days AFTER cooking that fantastic feast. Wow!! Exchequer – Severin/Gwilym (Deputy)/Ciara (Incoming) - The Signature cards are proving to be a real pain. We may need to go to the Putnam Branch of BofA and have us all sign at once. The

Putnam Branch of the Bank of America is open from 9-noon on Saturdays. Severin will send sig card paperwork to Ignatia on Friday 12/11/2015. Regardless of the signature cards, Severin will officially step down after the Year-end report is complete and Ciara will step up all the way. We’ll wrangle sig cards afterwards if we can’t manage it before. One of the checks we received for Yule bounced and inflicted us with fees. Severin to look up SCA/Kingdom policy on this as it hasn’t happened in ages and we can’t remember what it is. Bank Balance as of 11/30/2015 was $14,641.87. As of this morning it was $18,537.18. Enjoy that figure now because we have a Gigaton of checks to write for Yule, the Coronets and other things so it won’t stay that high for long (in fact it didn’t because Gwilym and Anarra signed a dozen or so checks at the meeting). Herald – Grimolfr/Camma (deputy) - We had an event on Saturday, and we held a court. Lord Omelan the Left was inducted into the Sun and Soil for all his help. Leif Ovarrson was inducted into the Defenders of the White Oak for his martial prowess in thrown weapons in adult tournaments and for being a former champion of the barony. Mistress Camma an Daraich was finally inducted into the Defenders of the White Oak for her obvious prowess with the bow, for her being a former champion, and because her Excellency noticed something wrong with our OP and made sure Camma was given that which was long overdue. Lady Leandra de Leon was given a Grant of Pontage from their Excellencies and has plans on constructed her bridge ASAP. My report was submitted to their Excellencies, Brigantia Herald, and Shepard's Crook Herald on 12/8/15. Keeping the OP correct since 2015. Nothing new has popped up on OSCAR or the LoAR for anyone (that I know of) in the barony. That's all for now, Lists – Mark the Red Hand/Alexandra Cupbearer (deputy) - One reportable injury at Yule that Bergental is dealing with because it was their fighting event and their Marshal. We have asked for copies of the report. Knight Marshal – Angus - One reportable injury at Yule that Bergental is dealing with because it was their fighting event and their Marshal. We have asked for copies of the report. Fencing Marshal – Grimolfr - For my fencing report, I'm currently waiting to hear from Liadan Ingen Chineada. She ran the fencing that day and she is the Marshal of Fence for Bergental. I found her on Facebook because she is not currently listed in the office on Bergental's website.

Captain of Archers – Rumhann - We had great archery at Yule! Youth Marshal – Karrah - No Report. Karrah, Anarra needs your new SCA Membership expiration date before the end of February. There was youth fighting at Yule, provided by Michael of York. 8 Fighters participated. Thrown Weapons Marshal – Michael - No Report. Web Minister – Gwilym/Constance (Deputy) - Sisuile Butler has volunteered to be the new Web Minister, effective as soon as she’s warranted. We need to update Martial Champions page and load the December Chanticleer to the web site. E-mail boxes for Seneschal appear to be sorted. Information on that needs to get to me (Anarra). Gwilym to talk to Constance regarding deputy. Seneschal of Ravenhill – Michael - No Report Baron and Baroness – Dorigen & Eloise - Please give them recommendations for awards. PLEASE. Old Business Yule 2014 - Several of us talked to the Bergental Exchequer on Saturday and we have received a copy of the 2014 Yule event report. Barbara (their Exchequer) says she has cut a check for $505.00. Anarra sent her Ciara’s address to mail the check to. Thank you AElfgiva for getting everyone in touch! Ciara had not received the check as of Thursday morning, but Barbara probably only sent it on Monday or Tuesday. Yule 2015 - Several Lost and Found items were returned. No one claims the 25 pound barbell weight. We did not lose money on the event. Ciara still finalizing report with some refunds and final receipts. AS FAR AS CIARA KNOWS, SHE HAS ALL THE RECEIPTS FROM YULE. IF YOU EXPECT TO BE REIMBURSED FOR AN EXPENSE TELL HER NOW. She will be finalizing the report this weekend and after that it’s too late. We wrote copious checks to cover reimbursements for site fees and event expenses. Anarra will e-mail Jovonne, Barbara, Emma, Rob, Gelleys, Ciara, Eloise and Dorigen to set up the usual post-Yule meeting. Possibly at the Paneras at exit 48 off of I-91. Yule 2016 - With Bergental's blessing, I've penciled us in for December 3, 2016 at the Hospital for Special Care Community Center *just in case*. We need to CANCEL BY MARCH if Bergental does have a site. Bergental met on Monday (12/7/15) and they have formed a committee to discuss Yule from their end and find a site. Jovonne (Seneschal) says they should have information for us next

month. March Barony Meeting SUNDAY March 13. - We’re having the March meeting on a Sunday at John, Sisuile and Rumhann’s house in Vernon starting at Noon. Thank you to them! Bring potluck to share. Meeting at 2:00. Schmooze the rest of the time. 103 Union Street, Vernon CT. Park in back. Call: 612-695-2251 (Sisuile) if lost Hrim Schola with Dragonship Haven – March 19 - Tristan is DSH autocrat. We have an Autocrat—Khazariyya. Ana Ilevna to coordinate classes. So far we have ~34 hours of classes but some are on similar subjects. Ana Ilevna to sort that out with teachers. PLEASE ask anyone you know who might want to teach a class to contact Ana Ilevna. We especially want tablet weaving and knitting. Anarra to think about whether she can do a several-hour workshop on dressing a Warp Weighted Loom. DSH will do site, money and dayboard. BBM will coordinate classes. Both would recruit teachers. BBM will provide bodies for gate and cleanup. The site has room for about 8 (eight) class spaces. Khazariyya, Ana Ilevna and Tristan to work out how many hours will be devoted to instructions vs Dayboard, etc. DSH’s December meeting is Sunday the 13th. Ana Ilevna and Anarra will go. Ælfgiva will provide a bell for ringing between classes. It would be useful if someone would volunteer to be the bell ringer. Anyone want to be a Bellman? (Obscure joke) Summer Shoot—June 4 - Severin will be the autocrat and Anarra will do on-site coordination same as last year. Anarra sent an e-mail to Bergental, DSH, Quintavia and Bridge telling them about our event on this date. Dorigan has taken steps so hopefully, maybe, Kingdom Archery Champions won’t be on this date (heavily dependent on the Crown so no guarantees). Quintavia has just changed Seneschals, Anarra to send another e-mail to them. Johanna and Alyce to do dayboard. Alyce to coordinate classes—one on making game boards Anarra to contact Arnwulf about availability to run more classes. We discussed contingency plans for if Kingdom Archery Champions lands on the same weekend or if Arnwulf is unavailable to coordinate classes. As a result of conversation, Ælfgiva said Holcomb Farm has spruced up and may make a good event site again. She will contact the management and get policies and prices (not necessarily for this event, but in general) Artifacts of a Life September 2017 - We will

probably do this again in 2017, pending discussions with Carolingia. Need a venue. Need to think about announcements to the Kingdom. New Seneschal - If you’re interested, now is the time to stand up! Anarra is stepping down by next Yule. Leif and Gabriella have so far expressed interest. If you are interested, tell Anarra! Coronets - They are spiffy and full of Bling! Eloise will convey some concerns pointed out by Sisuile to the person who made them. New Business EK Gazette wants a 2-days-a-month editor to monitor e-mail box. Anarra did not get any more information from the EK Gazette person so that’s all she knows right now. Coronet Boxes - Eloise and Dorigen will make them. Anarra has some poplar that may be useful. Baronial Inventory—Do you have anything that belongs to the Barony? Who has the Fennbrycg banner? We passed around the inventory sheets and added some data. In past meetings we had decided that the old Baronial Chairs would be given to Cormac. Ælfgiva to facilitate that. We no longer consider that we own them. In past meetings we had decided that the very large SCA direction signs would be disposed of. Anarra will do that as soon as she’s tired of them cluttering up her garage. The smaller SCA signs are still in use. We decided this meeting that the “Viewing Stand” frames that were attempted for a previous event are not useful. Gwilym wants the wood for possible Archery projects. Severin will collect the one frame from Carllein. He has the other one. He’ll get both to Gwilym, who will decide if it’s useful for the archery project. The covers for the viewing stands will be repurposed at some point in the future. Proposed “medium” banner - 5’ x 7’ w/ties - will fit the banner stand as we currently use it. Blue linen: 5 yds; Yellow linen: 1 yd; White linen: 1 yd; Red will come out of my personal scrap. Linen at Fabrics-store.com is currently $9.55/yd Request to spend up to $70. Eloise can usually get discounts, but that is the base price/yard. We authorized up to $70 for Eloise to make this banner. We also paid for the linen Eloise used to make the new Herald’s tabard. It’s spiffy! Anarra thinks it was $56. - Anarra
