“Behind the Times?”
New Year’s is so “old hat” by now for the
Church, since the Church’s new year
began on November 30, 2014, the first
Sunday of Advent. So often, the Church
is characterized as “behind the times” in
our culture, yet in many ways the Church is “ahead of
the times”. People are quick to point out how the Church
refused to accept that the earth revolves around the sun
and how it, for the most part, still refuses to accept that
humans have evolved from other species. Yet, not much
is said about the ways that the Church has been, and
continues to be, “ahead of the times”. Way back in the
first century, the Apostle Paul wrote, “There is no longer
Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no
longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ
Jesus.”Gal 3:28 (NRSV); yet, our culture still judges
people by what religion they practice, by their country or
origin, by the family from which they descended, by the
position they hold in life and even by their gender. As we
enter the year 2015, we all have an opportunity to live
“ahead of the times” and relate to others as fellow human
beings, instead of as members of some labeled group to
look down upon.

RL Re-Orientation Meeting
Wednesday, January 28
1:00 - 3:00 PM - Chapel
This annual meeting hosted by Kate
Roberts will review how your
insurance pays for rehabilitation in
Skilled Nursing; services provided to
residents living in Personal Care, and
give updated information about
Residential Living. This is the eighth
year we have offered this meeting. The
agenda changes slightly and serves as
a yearly reminder of the limits of
Medicare, a review of Medicaid and
much more. Tim McQuaid, CFO and
Erin Haselbarth, Billing Specialist will
present on financial matters for PBC.
It would be beneficial to consider
inviting your family/friends or
whoever serves as your Power of
Attorney agent. In the event of a
medical crisis for you, the person
serving as your decision maker (i.e.
agent with Power of Attorney for you)
would want to know about these
topics to make informed decisions for
you.
If you have specific questions,
please write them down and provide
them to the Receptionist who will
forward them to Kate to be included in
the presentation.
Residential Living Handbook Notes Please refer to page 6-7 of the
Residential Living Handbook regarding
our upcoming request for updated
financial information. Thanks for your
cooperation.
HAPPY HOLIDAYS From the staff of Home Helpers May your New Year be bright with the love
of family and friends. May you be blessed with health, wellness and peace.
We at Home Helpers are thankful to be
present in your community to help.

New Year, Healthier You The beginning of the New Year is always
a good time to reflect upon the year that
has passed and make some resolutions
to create a better, healthier version of
you. The following are some ideas to get
you started:
Keep fit both physically and
mentally. It is important to maintain a
strong body and mind. Talk to your
doctor about physical activity that best
suits your current health. Brain games
such as crossword puzzles and Sudoku
can help boost your mental strength.
Eat healthy. A well-balanced diet
helps your body fight disease and
infection, promotes good mental
function, boosts energy, and enhances
memory.
Stay organized. Review and keep your
paperwork in order for such things as
car insurance, will and financial
documents.
Create a safe home. It is important
to prevent falls. Remove tripping
hazards such as throw rugs and replace
light bulbs in dark areas.
Socialize. Connecting with family and
friends can help chase the winter blues
away. If you have the time, volunteer or
take part in community activities.
BAYADA wishes you a happy,
healthy and safe New Year!

Success Story
Marion Moyer will be 100 years old August 19,
2015. She has lived at Peter Becker Community
for 25 years and has been a long time member of
Church of the Brethren. Marion attends exercise
class 3 times per week here on campus and
attended water walking at the YMCA until she was
98 years old, after having learned to swim at 62.
Before Marion came to Peter Becker she lived on a
farm in Vernfield, PA. Marion loves to read and is
a member of the daily walking club. A former
hobby of Marion’s was a type of embroidery she
calls, “heart anchor.” Until about 3 months ago
Marion was cooking all her own food. When asked
if she ate healthy all her life Marion replied, “Not
really!” Marion listed some of the foods she likes
most: Corn mush, new fries (hash-browns), funny
cakes and apee cakes (which Marion explained is
a hard tack breakfast cake). We look forward to
celebrating Marion’s 100th birthday!
Meet and Greet - Profit Maximizers - Tax
Preparation Service

3:00 PM - Arbor Conference Center
Come meet the new accounting firm that will be
assisting you with your tax prep this year. Members

Happy New Year! Why not start the new year off with a new class at
the Indian Valley Family YMCA? Come and try the Walking to the
Oldies class on Tuesday and Thursday, 8:15 - 9:00 AM. It’s a great
workout on our indoor track, led by a wellness instructor who
specializes in older adult fitness. The class is designed to improve
balance, coordination and general strength while encouraging
members to get moving and have fun.
PBC resident Ted Fernes says, “I look forward to coming to
these classes because the staff is very friendly, easy to talk with
whenever I have a question, and are very informative about the
correct way to exercise. I enjoy being with other members who have
the same interests, and I’ve met a number of new friends over time.
I feel that these programs have helped me to control my health
concerns, and this is shown in the test results of my periodic
medical checkups.”
Our Membership Counselors are available to take you on a
tour of the facility and explain all the perks of membership at the
YMCA every weekday from 8:00 AM - 8:00 PM, Saturday 8:00 AM -
4:00 PM and Sunday 11:00 AM - 4:00 PM. Come and join Ted and
meet some new friends at Walking to the Oldies. It’s walking and a
whole lot more!

Volunteer Corner
Happy New Year to everyone!
This time of year marks the beginning of one of Peter Becker Community’s big
events. The Flower Show kickoff meeting will be Thursday, January 22, at
10:00 AM in the Orchid Terrace. Please come, hear about the great plans for the
“Re-Imagined Garden” theme, and sign up to volunteer in the shows creation. It
will be lots of fun!
Please consider starting the new year by helping with some of the volunteer
opportunities and needs in the community. There is something for everyone!
Wednesday worship service is always in need of volunteers to transport
residents to and from the Chapel. During January and February the need is
even greater as one of the staff will not be available. If you can help please
contact the Volunteer Coordinator or Joe Monserrat, our Life Enrichment
Coordinator. The more help, the more skilled nursing folks can go to the
service.
Fresh Water Delivery-help in needed in skilled nursing to pass fresh water to
the residents. Please let the Volunteer Coordinator know if you are interested.
