01 Eastlake Tavern + Bowl

EASTLAKE TAVERN + BOWLKITAbayashi Design Studio

The clients envisioned a hip, modern take on a bowling alley so we revitalized the bowling component by infusing it into a bar scene. The Tavern + Bowl concept respects the historical roots of Taverns in a setting appropriate for the 21st century. The down-to-earth comforts of a local hang out co-exist alongside informal, non-traditional bowling lanes to create a synergetic environment that is comfortable and energetic. A materialist approach celebrates humble building elements such as laminated veneer lumber, steel and poured concrete. We chose to expose rather than hide methods of connection to reinforce an unpretentious setting. The lanes were split to an intimate 4-lane confi guration and a raised 6-lane area. Custom ball holders with integrated seating, signature Gobo lane markers, and skater punk inspired graphics create an edgy vibe unlike any traditional bowling alley.

AnaheimKITAbayashi Design Studio

This was a ground up project with the design of the restaurant drawing from its New Orleans heritage. The restaurant is a strong departure from the stereotypical dark, serious steak house. Fun and playful details are infused throughout and most artwork was commissioned from New Orleans artists. The main dining room is reminiscent of a French Quarter streetscape with full height glass at each end of the room connecting and extending the interior space with its exterior surroundings. The private dining room area, aff ectionately known as Ruth’s Room and the Bar create the surrounding buildings that defi ne the “street”. The approach here is timeless and sophisticated with a unique NOLA inspired identity.

A delicate blend of the old and new produces a defi ned elegance with a cozy and intimate ambiance. The restaurant is composed of several diff erent dining areas each with its own unique identity. The lively bar is highlighted by an internally lit stepped back bar and includes a temperature controlled glass wine room opposite a split-face stone fi replace. In the main dining area, graceful curved wood ceilings, smart tailored furnishings, rich marble details and tapestry-like patterned carpet create a refi ned and sophisticated environment.

07 Heartland Brewery

HEARTLAND BREWERYNiemitz Design Group

This two-story 450-seat brew pub is located in one of New York City’s most famous landmarks and off ers craft brews, pub fare and a feeling of home. The upper level includes a small bar, plenty of dining and the rotisserie/take-out area. The décor consists of traditional pub detailing including reclaimed wood fl ooring, burlap café curtains and bead board wainscot. The humble decor is off set by dramatic custom light fi xtures which take their cue from old-school New York theater lighting. The lower level boasts 20’-0” high ceilings, houses a large bar, the majority of dining seats and the kitchen. A grand curved bar greets patrons as they come down the original terrazzo clad ellipse shaped stairs. To enliven this massive space without any windows, custom theatrical lighting, billboard sized WPA style original artwork and art glass in ambers and reds are employed.

Located in the heart of Kenmore Square, this fashionable brasserie is a favorite among locals and hotel guests alike for breakfast, lunch and dinner. After dinner the restaurant transforms into a local hang out as patrons vie for a position at the marble topped 46 foot bar. The soaring antiqued mirrored backbar is topped by an illuminated onyx cornice. The bar and dining area mingle together to facilitate the energetic, hip atmosphere envisioned by Proprietor Garret Harker. The storefront utilizes an operable Nana Wall system to extend the dining and lounge areas to the heated patio areas with seating for approximately 54 guests.

RUTH’S CHRIS STEAK HOUSE

Beverly Hillskbco design

This formal and traditional interior was renovated to align with the company’s new brand positioning of casual elegance with a touch of playfulness. To create a taller and more attractive focal point, the back bar wasdemolished and redesigned to accentuate vertical lines and provide the maximum working display area. A new wine cabinet replaced the existing outdated one in the main dining room. Custom designed fabrics for the booths featuring oversized succulent inspired fl ora and fauna give weight to the perimeter of the room, directing the focus away from the center aisle. Specially commissioned paintings throughout add drama and color to the stoic wood paneled walls.

This remodel updated the visual appeal of the restaurant, infusing a sense of fun and joie-de-vivre to align with the company’s new brand positioning. New fabrics and fi nishes in a contemporary color scheme invigorate the interior. The existing columns were treated with a faux wood treatment to accentuate the double-high volume. Bold, dramatic artwork and custom, large open glass chandeliers bring a modern element to the design. The back-bar was reconfi gured and led lighting was added at the shelves and bottle steps to add drama and visual interest. In the bar lounge area, a new banquette hugs the wall and ends in a large round booth to help anchor the odd, angular space.

After a successful remodel of the bar in 2010, the client engaged kbco design to explore expanding the bar dining area. To overcome the challenge of a severe slope on the south side of the property and to minimize construction costs, the curved exterior wall was designed to double as a retaining wall. The interior of the curve was treated with a stunning full height wall of wine to emulate the sparkling lights of a city view. The west side opened to views of the Pacifi c Ocean with a fl ame sculpture focal point to reinforce Ruth’s Chris’ signature sizzling steaks.

The building owner wanted to transform a former bank building occupied by a retail store to a vibrant Pub and Eatery. Ideally located along the Historic Route 101 in the heart of Oceanside, CA the existing building lacked curb appeal and suff ered from inhospitable way fi nding. A new glass entry tower and trellised patio welcomes patrons and takes advantage of the Southern California climate. Large factory style windows were punched through along the windowless North side of the building to attract the attention of the heavily traveled cross street. The interior concept utilized industrial materials and updated pub detailing taking full advantage of the high ceiling where it existed. A refrigerated glass keg room with exposed beer chases highlighted the large selection of craft brews. I partnered with Nogle OnuferArchitecture (NOAA) to complete the Permit Set for Chuck’s Ale House.

WINES AT THE PARK

Petco ParkJH D’Aprix Studio

The objective was to design a bottle service wine shop with a bar and storage for at least 1,000 bottles of wine. The interior was to be a hybrid of a wine retail store and a bar fortake-out service of decanted bottles or wines by the glass. Patrons are encouraged to interact with the wine since the bottle storage is treated as a retail display. The design uses traditionalbuilding materials with carefully designedlighting to eff ectively merchandise the wine. A wine bar with repurposed wine crate panels and granite top serves as the focal point and the vignette includes a backdrop of vintage view premium labels to encourage hi-rollers to splurge. A wall of coolers with internal LEDlighting provides temperature controlledstorage for working inventory while classic wood shelving holds back-up storage.

ARTWORKJH D’Aprix Studio

I am primarily a self taught artist and have trained in the long practiced tradition of copying the masters to develop my technique. In my original works I love to experiment with color and strive to capture an emotional connection with the viewer.

My appreciation of art has empowered me to work closely with artists to ensure continuity with the design theme and when a client’s budget allows, I can assist them in choosing relevant pieces of art as part of a long-term collecting strategy.
