Cleaning: Soak coins in a solution of very mild soap (can use distilled water, or olive oil); followed by soaking in de-ionized water to rid coin of mineral salts, until the water reaches a neutral PH.
Use the softest brushes; NOT metallic!
Or a dental pick, bamboo stick, cotton swabs. NO rock tumblers, sonic cleaners. Seal them only with coatings that are easily taken off, such as....

Electrolysis (solution with very dilute baking soda, distilled water). Warning: produces hydrogen gas; shocks to the careless cleaner; coins with no patina; and sometimes no coin.
