Quando ho chiesto a James di trovare un titolo per la sua mostra, non è passato molto tempo prima che mi proponesse "The Decadence". La sua spiegazione a questa scelta è stata, "dopo tutto, è di questo che tutte le opere trattano". Questa idea di Decadence cattura lo stile e l'essenza stessa del lavoro di James. Le sue opere sono decadenti, ma allo stesso tempo sono molto più: sono ricche di figure circondate da soggetti che ci guidano "in una atmosfera onirica ed indefinita ". È stato un desiderio di James quello di creare una mostra personale, caratterizzata dallo stesso filo stilistico. come lui stesso ha affermato, "non esiste una filosofia forte dietro le mie opere", ha comunque creato uno spettacolo estetico nel quale ogni opera coesiste armoniosamente con le atre.

E 'estremamente emozionante ospitare, presso la galleria Accesso, la prima mostra personale James' al di fuori della Gran Bretagna. Avendo lavorato con lui per oltre un anno, è un piacere vederlo evolvere e crescere artisticamente. I suoi dipinti si stanno riempiendo di sfondi sempre piu’ ricchi, rimanendo pero’ fedeli al tratto unico e distintivo che gli appartiene. I disegni di James hanno assunto nuovi elementi: si sono evoluti da semplici raffigurazioni ad immagini densamente costruite.

Per la prima volta, ha eseguito due grandi disegni in formato A1. Questa ha rappresentato una nuova sfida per James, una che é stato in grado di affrontare.

Una domanda che spesso ci si pone su James è da dove nasce la sua immaginazione. Non è facile rispondere a questo quesito. James semplicemente afferma che i suoi disegni e quadri ritraggono ciò che ama e prova. Questo peró è solo il principio. Per capire di più si ha bisogno di sapere chi è, e dove ha viaggiato. James vive nella città di Bath, nel Ovest dell’Inghilterra, un posto circondato da architettura di ispirazione palladiana. Da adolescente ha viaggiato da solo attraverso la Serbia, Romania, Ucraina e Russia post-comuniste ed è stato fortemente ispirato dalle persone che ha incontrato e dai vizi del fumare e del bere. Successivamente, si e’ recato in Cina dove ha visto pagode colorate, tessuti di seta riccamente decorati e "porcellane brandite con scene mitiche." Lo spettacolo di James è davvero decadente. Durante la pianificazione della mostra James ha deciso di creare un pezzo centrale che legasse insieme tutta l'esposizione, un'opera che rappresentasse tutto il suo lavoro. The Decadence, un dipinto di grandi dimensioni, nasce proprio con questo intento. Questo quadro racchiude in se' tutta la poetica di James: un languido uomo semi-nudo con una sigaretta e un bicchiere di vino, che giace su un tavolo coperto da un tessuto floreale. A questo punto James fa quello che gli viene meglio - si fa prendere dalla fantasia, e oltre ad aggiungere un enorme cavallo marino partoriente, inserisce una scimmia che accarezza il personaggio principale, mentre uno strano uomo barbuto compare da sotto il tavolo. Il tutto viene poi immerso in una atmosfera di acqua e montagne. L'intera descrizione forse suona strana ed eccessiva per poterci credere. Tuttavia funziona, e solo James sembra possa essere in grado di crearla. Nel mese di luglio, James viaggerà in Nepal. Sarà molto interessane vedere come questo influenzera’ la sua prossima serie di dipinti

the decadence I seek new perfumes, ampler blossoms, untried pleasures. Gustave Flaubert When I asked James to provide me with the title for his show, it did not take him long before he’d decided on “The Decadence.” He said, “after all, that is what they are all about.” This idea of The Decadence does capture the style and essence of James’ work. They are decadent but they are also so much more: they are filled with images of figures surrounded by patterns and objects and set in “atmospheres akin to dreams and vague settings.” It was James’ desire to create a solo show that was stylistically linked. As he said, he “doesn’t have a grand philosophy behind the pieces” but rather wanted them each to work with one another and flow together to create a beautiful show. He decided to paint on a scale with which he is most comfortable but then to also to create one large central painting for the show. In addition, for the first time ever, he has produced two large drawings in size A1 which for him was a new challenge but something he was very ready and prepared to do. It is extremely exciting to have James’ first solo show outside of Great Britain at Accesso galleria. Having worked with him for over a year, it is a pleasure to see him evolve and grow artistically. He is filling his paintings with more rich backgrounds yet he is staying true to the palette that is unique to James.

Likewise, his drawings have taken on a new element too as they have moved away from simple figuration to densely constructed images. A frequent question we are asked about James is how does he create and decide upon his imagery and this is not an easy question to answer. James says that he simply paints and draws what he likes and feels. This only goes part of the way to answer it. To understand more of James and his work one needs to know where he is from and where he has travelled. He lives in the city of Bath in the West of England which is filled with Palladian-inspired architecture. He travelled alone as a teenager through post-Communist Serbia, Romania, Ukraine and Russia and was greatly inspired by the people he saw and their passion for smoking and drinking. He then travelled to China and saw colourful pagodas, ornately patterned silk fabrics and “porcelains brandished with mythical scenes.” All of this imagery remains today in his paintings and drawings. In July, James will be travelling to Nepal. We will wait with an-ticipation to see how this journey influences his next series of paintings
