Welsh Ambulance Service
Hi, my name is Jack!
I work as a emergency medical technician for the
ambulance service.
My job is to help the paramedic and drive patients to
hospital in the ambulance.
Welsh Ambulance Service
I work with Kim. She is a paramedic. Kim had extra training, so she can help people who are very ill.
We work together as a crew on the ambulance.
If we have to go to an emergency, we turn on the
flashing blue lights and siren (that makes a lot of noise)
so we can get past the traffic safely and get to the
patient quickly.
Welsh Ambulance Service
Calling for an ambulance
If you or someone you know is sick or hurt, do you know how to call an ambulance?
It is very important that everyone knows how to call an
ambulance BUT ONLY IN AN EMERGENCY!!!
You can call this number from any phone any time day or night. It won’t cost you
any money.
DIAL 999
Welsh Ambulance Service
What happens when you call 999? When you call 999 you will speak to an operator who will ask you ‘which service do you want?’
If you need urgent medical help
They will put you through to a call taker at the ambulance control centre
who will ask you some questions (which you will see over the page) to find out
what the problem is so they can send the right people to help you. If the
problem isn’t urgent, you may speak to a nurse on the phone who
will help you.
If you don’t understand a question, tell the call taker
so they can explain what they mean.
Say ambulance
Welsh Ambulance Service
What is the address of the emergency? If the emergency is at home, tell the call taker where you live. If it’s not at home, try and look for a street name or building to tell them where you are
Can you verify the telephone number you are calling from? If the emergency is at home, tell them your home telephone number. If it’s not at home give the number where you are calling from or your mobile number.
What’s the problem? Tell me exactly what’s happened? Tell them who you are calling about and what has happened
Are you with the patient now? Tell them if you are next to the person who is sick/hurt or where they are.
How old is he or she?
I’m at Rose
Park.
My friend Tom has
fallen out of a tree,
hurt his arm and
his eyes are
closed.
He’s 10
years old.
My phone
number is

4. Are you with the patient now?
5. How old is he/she?
6. Is he/she awake?
7. Is he or she breathing?
The person may ask you some other questions. Try and answer them as best you can The person will listen to what you say and then decide if you need an ambulance
is
Is he or she breathing? Can you see their chest moving up and down?
The call taker at the control centre will then call the ambulance crew and
tell them what has happened or they can send the information to the
computer that’s on the ambulance .
If it is an emergency, an ambulance crew will come to help you as quickly as
they can. This should only take a few minutes.
Can you hear air coming out of their mouth if you put your ear next to their mouth?
Is he or she awake? Tell them if the person’s eyes are open and if they can talk to you?
Welsh Ambulance Service
Tom’s Accident When Kim and I arrive we examine Tom’s injured arm
and look to see if he hurt anything else. We use the
equipment from our ambulance to make him feel
better.
On the way to hospital Kim asks Tom some questions such as: What is his full name? How old is he? Where does he live?
She writes all his answers down on a form which she will give to the nurses and doctors at the
hospital to help them decide how to make Tom better.
Welsh Ambulance Service
Tom goes to hospital We take Tom to the nearest hospital emergency
department.
At the hospital, Kim meets a nurse called Ben. Kim tells
him all about how Tom hurt himself and what injuries he
has. Ben will now look after Tom to make sure he gets
the right treatment.
If you ever need to go to hospital and are not happy
about the service you get, then tell a responsible adult
who can help to try and put things right.
Welsh Ambulance Service
Caring for you If you or someone else calls for an
ambulance, a paramedic may get to you
in a fast car known as a Rapid Response
Vehicle depending on what has happened
and where you are.
Our staff will examine you and decide if
you need to go to hospital.
They may say that you need to visit your
doctor instead or be treated at home.
Welsh Ambulance Service
