Faculty/Staff News:

Mugur Geana's health communication project developed in collaboration with the University of Costa Rica has received a second year of funding, including additional funding from KU's International Programs. The project focuses on addressing the dengue epidemic in one of the poorest regions of Costa Rica; Barbara Barnett, as well as researchers from KUMC and JCCC are partners in this research and intervention enterprise. On November 13, Geana attended the Johnson County Community Summit on Suicide Prevention. The event, organized by Johnson County Mental Health Services, focused on identifying key community partners as well as potential strategies to address this growing problem in Kansas and nationwide. Geana promoted CEHCUP as a possible partner and research resource for the development of any strategic communication intervention for the community. Scott Reinardy's paper “Liars, Killers and Bobbleheads: Behind the Rhetoric of the Target Market Anti-tobacco Campaign” appeared in the fall 2012 issue of Journal of Media Psychology. He co-authored the paper with LSU assistant professor Jensen Moore. Jerry Crawford was an invited presenter for the Jesse B. Semple Brownbag Series, sponsored by the Langston Hughes Center at the University of Kansas, November 12, 2012. Topic: Accreditation and Challenges of HBCUs. He discussed the historical mission of Historically Black Colleges and Universities, accreditation (NCATE/SACS) importance, Title III & Title IV funding and the threat of mergers and elimination of these institutions today. Crawford was also an invited presenter at the Asian American High School Leadership Symposium. University of Kansas, November 15, 2012. His topic to the students was "Social Media, Organization and Leadership". He discussed social branding, web design, career choices and higher education strategies. Hands-on presentation that students were able to create websites, video conferencing and examine and start to develop self-awareness of theirs and others' management styles. Media Crossroads will host "A Conversation with Steven Hawley" at 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 29. Hawley, a KU professor and former astronaut, flew five Space Shuttle missions in the 1980s and 1990s. Junior journalism student Trevor Graff will lead the discussion. The event is free and open to the public. Approximately 25 reporters attended “Common Ground: The Media, the Military, and Post-traumatic Stress,” a one-day workshop sponsored by the William Allen White School of Journalism. The workshop, held Nov. 16 at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., brought together experts from the medical community, the military, and the media to discuss how journalists can better report on post-traumatic stress (PTS) among returning troops and discuss how journalists can better cope with their own PTS. Barbara Barnett planned and coordinated the workshop, which involved KU faculty, staff, and students. Dean Ann Brill delivered the welcome, along with Mark Harmick, KU alum and business reporter for the Associated Press in Washington, D.C. Mugur Geana and Tom Volek helped moderate the three panels.
