DESCRIPTION
A presentation I gave at IWCE 2013 entitled Ways Wireless is Changing the World. Covering voice, data, and wireless communications from pagers to cell phones and from newspapers to iPad.TRANSCRIPT
Ways Wireless is Changing the World
The way we communicate
Not just talking
– Talking– Texting– Browsing– Working– Video Conferencing
The impact.
Went from a receive only model to areceive, respond, communicate,
interact, learn, locate, model.
How this changes MY world
• I don’t have to find a pay phone• I can communicate more effectively• I don’t have to be in an office• I don’t have to be in a library• Music stores, movie theaters, arcades• Newspapers, magazines, books
Wireless Communications make this possible. Wireless providers are the key enabler.
Wireless providers are leveraging their “pipes” in new ways.
21% of mobile users spend more on their monthly
communications than they do on groceries.

What about the way we get our information?
How this changes OUR world
• We get anytime access to data• We help propagate connectivity• We become a persistently connected society
What’s next in wireless data?
New Spectrum: 5 GHz
• Two blocks:– 5.35 GHz – 5.47 GHz = 120 MHz!– 5.895 GHz – 5.925 GHz = 30 MHz!
• Geolocation database, similar to TVWS
What’s next in wireless data?
The way we live
Medical Body Area Networks (MBAN)
• IEEE 802.15.6– May 4th, 2012:

The way we learn
Tools like these are great when connectivity is provided, but what
happens when the students go home?
The way we play
The way we serve & protect
The way we shop
The way we interact
