Dear All

November has been eventful. Assessments, Sports , Children‟s Day and Picnics have kept everyone

preoccupied. Planning and execution required effort and dedication. The ultimate success was worth

the effort.

Children‟s Day celebration was a thrilling experience. It was easy to identify with the occasion.

A three day sports event was organized to engage students in sports and to primarily develop a will to

compete. The enthusiasm with which everyone participated was encouraging.

It is our mission to develop able citizens for our nation. We aim to instill deep moral values with con-

victions. The best steel is tempered by the hottest of fire. True character emerges through challenges of

adversity. Conviction and belief in correct values are our allies in time of challenges.

The role of the teachers in this endeavour remains same. The methods have changed. Digital informa-

tion system has taken a quantum leap. Processing such information means a paradigm shift in method-

ology. It is up to teachers to take advantage of vast information bank and make it available to them .It

has to ensure that students themselves develop adequate skills to process and access the vast resources

available.

I am confident that challenges will not deter us. We have succeeded in the past and together we shall

make it.

I wish to inform you that I attended S.P. Jain The Annual Educator‟s Conclave at Dubai and Educa-

tionist Meet by Bennett University ,ICS at Lucknow. The details of these enriching meets would be

shared with you all in the special edition of SCIS BUZZ.

On 7th November 2015, the Interact Club of MCKV School and the Rotary Club of Belur, organised a pro-

gramme which was held at MCKV School, Liluah (Howrah). The programme was aimed at ushering the

newly formed District Interact Committee (Dist.3291), and providing guidelines to the office bearers and

other Interact Club members on their roles and responsibilities. Mrs. Shyamashree Mukherjee, the Dist.

Governor (Dist.3291) was the Chief Guest for the occasion. Other dignitaries were, Mr Rajani Mukherjee

(Ex DG), Mrs. Mousumi Bhattacharya and the elected body of Interact committee. Mr. Binod Kr. Das , the

teacher coordinator of SCIS Interact Club, attended the orientation programme. Each member on the panel

briefed the new committee and motivated them to move ahead with the mission of Rotary International in

every possible way as they can. Mrs. Mousumi Bhattacharya mentioned that a Manual of Rotary containing

the guidelines for Interact members and officials will be mailed to the teacher coordinators which can be

used to understand the roles and responsibilites of the Interact Movement.

Mr. Rajani Mukherjee, who was also the keynote speaker passed a resolution on behalf of the new Inter-

act Committee to collect a token amount of Rs.50 per year from each member of Interact Club, to fund

the work and meetings of the new committee. The fund is to be collected by the President of respective

clubs and forwarded to Rajiv Banthia (President of Interact Committee 2015-16, Dist.3291). Accounts to

be maintained by the Treasurer of each club for their own funds. The programme ended with a question-

answer session in which many students clarified their doubts on various topics.

VISIT TO MC KEJRIWAL VIDYAPEETH, LILUAH –AN ORIENTATION PROGRAMME

Date: 29th October, 17th November & 24th November 2015

Members Attended: MsSusmitaBasu, MsRajoshi Banerjees, Prachi (2nd Year Student from Loreto College), ParomaSengupta&selected stu-

dents from Classes IX &XI

Venue: A.V.R, SCIS, Kolkata

The entire project comprises of twenty modules. The first day of the workshop was an in-

trospect on our individual rights and how to protect it. A hand out on all the articles of Hu-

man Rights has been given to the students. A documentary on violation of human rights

during Nazi Germany was shown to the students. The second day of the workshop com-

menced with the meaning of „Holocaust‟ and discussion on it. The teachers along with the

students were assigned to list out ten items to be carried. Each one prepared a list along

with the facilitator and read it out. In doing this process the individual‟s priority comes to

the fore but most important almost all of us like to carry laptops, cell phones along with

some money, failed to understand that GPS can also track our hideout place. A hand out of

a story „Jew Car‟ was given to the students along with an assignment to identify the in-

stances of social seclusion in our society.

It was a rare opportunity to listen to the tales told by two professional photographers Olivia Arthur and Philipp Ebeling through their photo-

graphs at Harrington Arts Street, Kolkata on 7th November 2015. The event was organised by British Council, Kolkata and students of SCIS

photography club – Vihaan Khanna, Vidur, Vivaan Sonthalia and SantanuVolz along with two teachers – Mr. HayshanRehman and Ms.

MadhuriKatti attended it. Both the photographers were presenting their latest books/projects self published by their venture „Fish

Bar‟. Photo journalism is at its best phase now thanks to the evolving digital technology. It was indeed heartening to see thematic represen-

tation of places, people and the era by these two splendid artists. Olivia Arthur‟s latest work – “Stranger” is about Dubai and narrates a tale

of a fictitious survivor of a 1961 shipwreck in which many lost their lives. This survivor from the troubled past returns to connect to the mod-

ern Dubai full of dichotomies – unprecedented growth and development while being trapped in conservative society where women still have

to wear a veil and live their free lives alienated behind the curtains. It is a very interesting work on women which also connects to her previ-

ous work on Saudi Arabia, Jeddah and India – a commentary on how culture, past defines a city and its people. Philipp Ebeling‟s book

“Land without Past” is a personal tale of growing up in a German neighbourhood while connecting to the troubled history of Germany – pre

and post Nazi era and the very recent reunification of Germany. It was a rare experience to listen to the anecdotal context in the first person

and the linkages made through photographs to the significant past of two culturally very different cities. The book “Stranger” also experi-

ments with the design, layout and even paper. The transparent paper adds to the commentary of a ship wreck survivor who was traveling to

Dubai with dreams on a ship but destiny turned out to be different. The underwater photographs of the remains of the shipwreck printed on

transparent sheets make the whole experience surreal.

STUDENT SPEAK Human rights are rights which every human possesses, but unfortunately not every human is aware of it. I was fortunate

to attend this workshop with the objective to spread awareness about human rights. .The interactive session brought

forth various views regarding human rights. Recent events which violated human rights were given as reference. For

example ,the terrorist attack in Paris.

We were also shown a video on Adolf Hitler who brazenly violated the human rights of the Jews and massacred them .

It was an enriching experience as we became more aware of human rights.

Australian Trade Commission and Cambridge English Language Assessment organized a workshop to introduce their India Schools Video

Competition 2015 for school students in India which was hosted by South City International School on 5th November. The competition is sup-

ported by the National Australia Bank, Credila and four prestigious Australian universities –Bond University, Charles Darwin University, Cur-

tin University and James Cook University. SAE Institute, Australia is the knowledge partner of the initiative.

“Advance 2 Australia” (www.a2oz.org) is an online video competition wherein team of two students and a mentor teacher will submit a three

minutes video based on any of the four themes – Social Entrepreneurship, Robotics, Oceanography and Creative Animation. The workshop, to

train and orient students about this competition ,was conducted by two trainers from SAE Institute, Australia - Ian Dixon & Stephanie. The

workshop was organized at a very short notice .Hence ,only few school teams attended it. The participant schools were – Sri Sri Academy, Be-

thune Collegiate School, Jadavpur Vidyapeeth, La Martinere School for Boys and South City International School.

The workshop covered the basics of film making over two sessions. All teams are expected to submit three minutes videos on respective topics

to win a free trip to Australia.

Eight students of Class XI along with four teachers of SCIS attended this workshop. It gave a much required exposure and opportunity to ex-

plore creative fields of study.

Art Teacher ,Ms. Payal Sarkar along with two students – Nilavo of Class VII C and Aryan Ghosh of

Class VI D attended an Art Workshop titled “Me, Myself and Us”on 17th November 2015 . It was

part of the celebration of Annual International Education Week from November 16-20 and was con-

ducted by U.S Fulbright Teaching Assistant Nimah Gobir. Students found it very interesting as they

were given resources on spot and were asked to work in groups to creatively engage themselves in

different tasks.

Students of Classes VI-XI participated in the Tata Building India School Essay Competition on 3rd of November 2015. It is India‟s largest

school essay writing competition organized by Tata group of companies to motivate and nurture young minds across India. The essay competi-

tion provides a unique platform to encourage young leaders of tomorrow to showcase their expressions in writing, on host of subjects related to

nation building.

The English teachers have shortlisted best essays from each class and they have been sent for national round.

Six students of Art along with the Art teacher, Mr. Ishaan ,attended an Art workshop conducted by University of Cleveland at Garden High

International School on 4th of November 2015.It was a good educative workshop on creative techniques.

The Voice Club of Modern High School had hosted a Model SAARC Summit on

the 20th and 21st of November 2015. It was different from the normal MUN proce-

dures as the conference took place for only two days instead of three. The Executive Board

was approachable and efficient. The Press Team at Modern High did a laudable job in

working silently yet tirelessly launching the “MSAARCastic” newspaper.

MSAARC was a quadruple delegation committee which required team work and presenta-

tion was every delegation‟s priority. Our allotment was Sri Lanka and the delegation con-

sisted of The Prime Minister, the Foreign Minister, the Foreign Secretary and the Defense

Secretary. The participants from SCIS comprised of TanviSehgal, SuruchiPattnaikand Ray-

eesaArifeen and me. I was the SCIS Head Delegate and thus the Prime Minister of Sri

Lanka. Tanvi was the Defense Secretary, Rayeesa was the Foreign Minister and Suruchi

was the Foreign Secretary. MSAARC had two interwoven agendas- i) Territorial Disputes

and ii) Refugee crisis in South Asia. We also had to submit two position papers prior to the

committee.

During committee sessions, subcommittees were running parallel wherein a member from

each delegation (except The Head of State) was called to the other conference hall and were

given to handle a crisis at hand and during the subcommittees no procedures followed. Af-

ter all the members of the delegation except the Prime Minister were done solving the crises,

the Heads were called to write a declaration, encapsulating all the decisions and amend-

ments made during the one and a half day committee session. While writing a declaration,

we were divided into three blocks by the Executive Board- Territorial Disputes, Refugee

Crisis and drug and human trafficking. I am proud to say that I was the only delegate who

authorized all the three declarations. Though we returned only with participation certifi-

cates, we did make some notable achievements. Our position paper was approved by the

E.B and an amendment was made to the SAARC Charter as per our position paper. We

were the youngest lot in the entire committee and yet we authorized working papers and

communiqués which were highly appreciated by the committee including the E.B. and

teachers at Modern High School. This not only increased our school‟s recognition but the

appreciation and recognition highly overwhelmed us.

The funfilled Children's Day celebration was held on November 5th, 2015

in the school auditorium for the primary and secondary school.

Usually we see students trying to act like teachers, but this was the time of

the year when we saw our teachers acting like us.

The amazing show started when our teachers came popping out in our

school uniform which was proceeded by a welcome speech by the Princi-

pal, Mr.Bagul.

He showered the students with blessing and worthy advice.

Well now commences the show where the teachers from primary and sec-

ondary got together to put up the best possible show.

From the anchors to the dancers, from the musicians to the actors all

made us get along with the flow of the show.

To give this show a special appeal ,Vice Principal, Ma'am Sanjukta , left

us all astonished as she tapped her feet to the beats of an Indian-classical

song along with two other teachers.

Suruchi Patnaik of Class IX-C says that she liked the mime the most as

she believes it was something different and creative .The teachers had put

up such a wonderful performance in such a short time.

It was a short and sweet mime with seven teachers participating. The

mime made us laugh, and we applauded till our hands ached.

I enjoyed the most when the „queen of jokes and laughter‟, Ma'am

Singhla made us all laugh out loud with her jokes.

The program continued with a beautiful and mesmerising performance

by our Performing Arts Department .They sang beautiful Hindi and Ben-

gali songs and made the audience swag along with them.

“I always thought that our teachers excelled only in the subjects that they

teach, but surprisingly ,they have all turned out to be all rounders”, said

Payal Mandan of Class IX-A. She also adds that it was a perfect opportu-

nity for us to appreciate our teachers.

The tribute to Michal Jackson through a dance was completely tremen-

dous . Further entertainment continued with another dance on a Hindi

number and the teachers received a standing ovation.

„SHOWERS OF BLESSINGS‟ is what every child needs and the Pri-

mary Head, Ma'am Sahana lead the chorus in rendering this song.

Last but not least was an enactment of a children‟s song, „A hole in the

bucket‟.It was a funny play which was enjoyed by all.

The function concluded with all the teachers coming up on stage and giv-

ing a perfect ending by singing the very famous song „Senorita‟ .The icing

on the cake was when our Principal ended this function with a

beautiful note ,followed by the National Anthem.

I love my school because it is so clean and green. The field is so big and I love going to the library and read-

ing books. We have kind teachers and I love my Principal, he talks to us in the assembly. He talks to all the

children. I love to play games. I love to run.

On Grandparents‟ Day, my grandparents came to my school, they liked to see my school and all the craft

work I do. We had fun, we ate cakes.

Igniting minds is the prime objective of any form of education.

Class II did an innovative activity on how we can spread the mes-

sage of love and compassion, thereby making the world a better

place to live in.

The students brainstormed on ideas and then wrote them down in-

side a human bulb. Just as a bulb gives light, we hope their ideas

will also spread light in the world and illumine humanity.

Meeting Rahul Dravid

On the 24th of November, seventeen students ,five primary and twelve secon-

dary students along with three teachers (Mr. Arun Agarwal, Mr. Sankarjit

Chakraborty and Ms. Asmita Kapoor) went to the Salt Lake Stadium to

meet the great cricket icon ,Mr. Rahul Dravid.

We reached the venue at 11.30a.m. and watched him coaching the „Under

19 Indian Cricket Team‟ . The session continued till 1.00 p.m. The children

took group photos with their idol and he gave autographs to some of them.

The children also took autograph of Ricky Bhui, captain of the „Under 19‟

team . It was indeed a thrilling experience and the children learnt that the

key to success lies in three d s- discipline, diligence and dedication.

Primary School Picnic

The Primary Section went to Ibiza for a picnic, with all our teach-

ers. It is a beautiful resort with lots of greenery around. After reaching, we were

very hungry .We had our breakfast. We went off to play after this and enjoyed our-

selves thoroughly. When a little tired, we sat down to play Uno .

In between we had our favourite chips and chocolates. By that time our lunch was

ready and arranged. Before having lunch we did a little „Shama Laga Yoyo‟....I

meant to say that we danced. Lunch was yummy. I had three scoops of chocolate

ice cream . We had lots of fun. After that we came back to school. We shared our

wonderful experience with our parents and I would love to experience it all over

again .I had lots of fun and a great time which I will cherish. Reported by : Tanishka Mazumdar (Class IIIB)

(SECONDARY)

This is my third month at South City International School and let me put it, I am thoroughly enjoying it. We had the secondary

school picnic on 21st of November 2015, for which we were taken to Ibiza Resort in Merlin Greens, Amtala, 24 Paraganas

(South). We reported to school at 7:30 am and we were well settled in the buses by 8:15am.We all got to sit with our friends.

The journey was quite long, yet enjoyable as we sipped on juices and snacked on chips. It was a ninety minute journey. On

reaching Ibiza, breakfast of “puri” and “aloo dum”was served to us and finished with the finger-licking “jalebi”! The resort has

massive open spaces , a lake and a swimming pool. What a treat it was for our urban eyes! Some played games, while others

went out to explore the resort. The greenery thrilled us and we clicked pictures. There were adorable rabbits and quacking

ducks. My friend and I happened to spot a “water-snake”. We even got a chance to visit the Disco. We all danced our hearts out

to catchy tracks and the teachers joined in too! I really wish I could rewind time and relive those moments. Lunch was served

and ice cream too. We couldn‟t resist four scoops and some of us even went for more. By 2:30pm we were all ready to leave for

school . It was great fun and one of the best picnics I‟ve ever had! It‟ll be a cherished memory forever!

Indian Institute of Cerebral Palsy celebrated the 41st Foundation Day. They seeks to bring about positive

changes in the lives of all people with cerebral palsy through a range of policies and service provisions de-

signed to enhance their individual skills and knowledge and give them opportunities to exercise their consti-

tutional rights and fully participate and contribute to the community and country. This mission reflects ad-

herence to a social model of disability and to international and national rights-based initiatives namely the

United Nations Convention for the Rights of Persons with Disability, 2007, the Persons with Disability Act,

Govt. of India, 1995 and the National Trust Act, Govt. of India 1999.

On 18th of November 2015, Special Educator Coordinator Mr. Gautam Sengupta visited IICP with three

children of Interact Club. They visited the class rooms and the vocational rooms. The children got sensitized

and were so touched that at the end of the visit they donated money.

On 19th November 2015,Class VIIIA along with Class Teacher Ms. Priyanka, Ms. Sangeeta and Special

Education Department counselor ,Ms. Ronita paid a visit to IICP Exhibition. Students were very touched by

the whole experience. They also bought handmade stuff from the exhibition and contributed to the cause.

Our visit to the Indian Institute of Cerebral Palsy on 19th November 2015 was more interesting than it sounded. We visited

their library which had a lot of books and their own album displaying the events they took part in. Various devices like the

audio recording book were used in communication with the mentally and physically challenged children. Even after their

health problems , they asked really intelligent riddles and questions. We saw children typing on the keyboard with their feet

which would take us a really longtime to do. We came across a lot of rooms with a lot of presentations relevant to the

themes of the rooms like the Coffee House , The Green Park and even a Mall. All of them were really good. We came

across one of the their students named Rajkumar who wouldn't talk when he was first brought to the IICP Premises and

now he is a young man with a good job and has an improved mental condition. We met another special person , Andy sir , who had devoted a lot

of his life for this very purpose. We also met one of Gautam sir's favourite students , Shreya who had a great sense of craft and made really beauti-

ful necklaces. One of the students , Bernard came from the missionaries of charities for his education. We arrived in the computer lab and were

quizzed on the discovery of computers which was really interesting. Their sense of imagination was high and maybe more than us. The thing I

liked the most is that they had their own printing unit where they made handmade paper bags , envelopes and notepads too. There was stalls for

everything made in the premises. One of the elderly students , Shraddha had a great skill in making really good presentations and was interested in

music and who liked to play with music. It was a really adventurous experience and a place really worth visiting and I am thankful for getting a

chance to visit the institution. It is an inspiration to students like us.
