and depletion of the country’s naturalresources. “ In tourism , India must presentitself on its own terms – not as an echo orimitation of other countries, other cultures

and life styles.’’

In view of the rising share of tourism inearning foreign exchange and itscontribution towards creating internationalgoodwill and understanding, the policydocument states that high priority would beaccorded to the development of internationaltourism and increasing attention to fosterregional tourism .

It underscores the importance of domestictourism and refers to the insufficient facilitiesavailable to the lower middle class andpoorer section of society , with particularreference to the pilgrim traffic, and proposesto provide cheap accommodation throughDharamshalas and Sarais.

Due emphasis is given to thedevelopment of culture tourism andefforts to provide adequate touristfacilities at major cultural centers in aplanned manner in co-ordination withother agencies.
