Who are we! Meet the Team!

Devon Academy opened in 2005 and is a well established as a college which has earned itself an excellent reputation in the industry. We have a small but enthusiastic and passionate team some of whom have been practicing massage therapists for over twenty seven years. We teach some of the most thorough massage techniques in the industry which will set you ahead of the competition from the very beginning. ITEC massage courses are recognized worldwide and we are one of the best colleges offering this training in Europe. Our fast track courses are suitable for keen, enthusiastic students wishing to complete their training as quickly as possible, in order to start their new career. No experience is necessary just a willingness to learn and put in the work. We teach the whole syllabus in an intensive, innovative but fun way and most of our students achieve a credit or distinction and to date we have successfully maintained 100% pass rate. Our classes are small, so that we can offer each individual advice and support! New E learning option now at Devon Academy! Currently for the APP course only but we hope to role out the Massage; Aromatherapy and Reflexology theory by E learning in the New Year. Leaving our practical sessions to focus on bringing the APP alive and polishing your therapy techniques.

Our Principal

Gail Lowe

is a practicing massage therapist with over 27 years experience in the industry. Disillusioned with both general and psychiatric nursing she initially trained with Prof: Arnold Taylor, founder of ITEC, at the Imperial College, London. She developed a very successful self employed business in North Devon adding Clinical Aromatherapy to her portfolio.

She opened the Healing Arts Therapy centre in 1990’s where she worked closely with other therapists, osteopaths, local GP’s and hospitals. She was invited to give lectures to nurses and teach workshops to GP’s about the benefits of massage and aromatherapy. She ran a drop-in aromatherapy clinic and would mix topical applications for babies with eczema; patients with varicose ulcers and many other conditions as well as developing her own products.

During this time she also trained in Level 4 Sports massage at the Northern Institute in Blackpool, with Eddie Caldwell and Lars Peterson author of Sports injuries. Focusing her treatments on combining remedial massage with aromatherapy she has helped many Olympic athletes recover from injuries and return to peak performance as part of their training regime. Gail considers that it was her enthusiasm and passion combined with the very thorough training she has received along the way, that is responsible for her success. She is concerned with the quality of treatments she has received worldwide, which has led her to open Devon Academy and share her skills and expertise with her students during their training.


Vice Principal

Derek Lowe

Twenty three years later he is qualified in many therapies, is a qualified teacher and specializes in teaching Reflexology and Sports Massage although he does teach on all courses. He works closely with sports groups and Physio’s and currently offers treatments to the Cullompton Rugby club. His 25 years business experience in London allows him to impart his wealth of knowledge to students to prepare and assist them in their Business Assignment.

holds a BA degree in Business Studies and worked successfully in the hotel industry until the early 90’s when he met his wife Gail, who introduced him to the world of massage therapy. He studied Precision Reflexology with Pru’ Hughes in Crediton initially and developed his portfolio of massage skills, building his clientele at their Urban Day Spa and then jointly opening their first Devon Academy in Barnstaple which was a therapy centre and ITEC training college.

Other tutors

Marilyn Dackombe

is an experienced ITEC tutor from London and has recently joined the team in Exeter. She has an enthusiastic bubbly nature and has already successfully taught the Thai foot workshops for us and we have invited her to teach part of the Massage, Anatomy and Physiology courses.

Berkley Wilde

is a multi talented therapist and experienced ITEC Sport teacher who we are delighted to invite to teach on our Level 3 & 4 Sports Massage courses.

Louise Hagger,

Together they understand completely the risks and emotions involved for each student when changing career, and bring a very different approach to their teaching, in order to suit the needs of all students.

physiotherapist, works alongside Derek at the Cullompton Rugby club and has agreed to teach our Strapping and Taping Workshops for Sports therapists.

Support staff

Ruth Godbeer

is an experienced runner and sports trainer who ran the Kingsbridge leg of the Olympic torch relay last year. She is our main admin support without which we would crumble. She organises the office and keeps us on the straight and narrow.

Students with no previous massage experience will be expected to enrol onto the AP&P course alongside this course and complete course assignments and case studies. environment, for pregnant ladies and the elderly who have difficulty climbing onto or lying face down on the couch.

♦ The unique sitting position of your client enables you to very effectively treat muscles of

the shoulder and neck such as supraspinatis, trapezius, splenius capitus etc. Muscles which when lying down can often be over looked and difficult to access.
