Alto Adige is a diverse region with climate and soil variations even within its smallest localities. The region is blessed with more than 300 days of sunshine, wide day-night-temperature swings and an average growingseason temperature of over 18° C. It is also home to what is often referred to as “the most beautiful mountains in the world”, thesnow-capped Dolomites, which not only ser-ve as postcard-perfect sites for winter and summer sports, but also protect the vine-yards from cold, damaging winds. The lowest vineyards are located at 750 feet and the highest reach 3,250 feet above sea level. The composition of soil includes dolomitic rock, fluvial deposits and por-phyry in the Adige Valley, the Oltradige and the Bassa Atesina. This inclu- des moraine debris and volcanic deposits in the Bolzano basin and slaty primitive rock in the Isarco Valley and Val Venosta. Pinot Bianco, Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio dominate the white varieties, while Sauvignon Blanc enjoys increasing popularity and success. The aro-matic, spicy Gewürztraminer variety — that got its name from the village of Tramin — has a special place in Alto Adige winemaking. Sylvaner, Müller-Thurgau, Kerner, Veltliner and Riesling grow primarily in the cooler sites and Moscato Giallo completes the white varietal range of Alto Adige. The native Schiava black grape variety dominates in Alto Adige, accoun-ting for almost 30% of total vineyard area. The velvety Lagrein, also a na-tive variety, is also widely planted. For over a century the noble Bordeaux and Burgundy black varieties, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Pinot Noir, have been planted in Alto Adige. Malvasier and Moscato Rosa, while rare, complete the red varietal assortment. Delicious, diverse, unpretentious and authentic, these wines truly reflect the character of this magnificent region. Today discerning wine drinkers have discovered Alto Adige as a source of elegant and aromatic white wines, the type of wine which only the mixture of southern sun and crisp Alpine air can produce. The red wines, also much sought after because of their succulent fruit and velvety tannins are characterized by fruit rather than austerity.

Alto Adige (also called Südtirol) is one of the smallest wine-growing areas in Italy. Wine culture and tradition are closely linked in this region on the southern side of the Alps. Innumerable generations of winegrowers have influenced the history of viticulture in Alto Adige, where beautiful vineyards, with a backdrop of snow-

covered mountains are synonymous with unique, high-quality wines. Alto Adige is the oldest wine producing region of the German linguistic area. Archaeological excavations indicate the existence of viticulture, long before the Romans occupied the Adige Valley. Many diverse peoples have settled and influenced the region during the course of time, particularly the Bavarian and Swabian dioceses and abbeys who cultivated vines and developed viticulture in Alto Adige. Today there are about 12,500 acres of vineyard planted in Alto Adige, which lie in the valleys along the Adige River between Silandro and Salorno along the Isarco River between Bolzano and Bressanone. While Alto Adige represents only 0.7% of Italy’s total production, it leads the country in wine meriting a DOC designation. 98% of its wines fall into this category. The region boasts diverse types of producers from small independent winegrowers to larger wine estates and cooperative wineries. Whereas cooperatives in other countries have a lacklustre image, here, they are quality focused. A typical cooperative will have several hundred members, each of whom individually cultivates a plot that, on average, is less than 2.5 acres. Fifteen cooperative wineries produce almost 70% of the region’s wine. The remaining 30% is produced by wine estates and independent winegrowers.

Pinot Bianco(Weißburgunder / Pinot Blanc)

Pinot Bianco was cultivated in Alto Adige for the first time by Archduke Johann of Austria in 1852. It developed magnifi-cently within the province. With an elegant scent of apples and lively acidity, it is the per-fect everyday wine. In order to get the finesse of the Pinot Bianco fruitiness right into the bottle without adulteration, winemakers make sparing use of oak barrels with this variety.

Cultivation zone: in all wine-growing zones with the exception of the Isarco Valley Growing method: pergola and Guyot trellises Preferred conditions: does best at medium elevations, 400-600 m (1,300-2,000 ft) Synonyms: Italian: Pinot Bianco, German: Weißburgunder Serving temperature: 10 to 12 °C (50 to 54 °F) Recommended pairings: light appetizers, fish, Tyrolean dumpling dishes

VarietalTables Sauvignon Blanc

This variety was introduced toAlto Adige at the end of the nineteenth century along withSemillon. While the latter grapedid not turn out to be worth-while in the province, Sauvi-gnon settled in particular in the terraced sites along the Adige River, from Salorno upto Merano. The area of culti-vation is increasing. In Alto Adige, this varietal opens up to its fullest potential with its typical spectrum of intense aromas, producing both crisp, fresh wines and those with a marked intensity.

Cultivation zone: from the Bassa Atesina through the Oltradige and Bolzano basin to the Adige Valley, occasionally in the Val Venosta. Growing method: Guyot trellis Preferred conditions: especially on terraced slopes with gravel soils Synonyms: Fumé Blanc, sometimes simply „Sauvignon“ Serving temperature: 10-12 °C (50-54 °F) Recommended pairings: asparagus, grilled vegetables, fish, goat cheese

Gewürztraminer

The name alone documents the Alto Adige winegrowing village of Termeno as the homeof this grape. „Traminer“ fromTermeno was a term known throughout the entire German-speaking world as early as the thirteenth century. Within two hundred years of that, it was the most planted variety in Alto Adige. Yet because of its low yields and susceptibility to frost and viral diseases, it nearly died out a century ago. Today it is once again regarded as the showpiece of white varietals. The International Gewürztraminer Symposium, which takes place in Termeno in odd-numbered years in July, also substantiates this forerun-ner role at the international level. Thanks to its sumptuous spectrum of scents, with notes of rose petals, cloves, lychees, and other tropical fruits, Gewürztraminer is re-garded as the absolute embo-diment of an aromatic wine variety. And with its intense colour, comparatively high alcohol content, and luxuriant texture, it is the epitome of a meditation wine.

Fortunately, because of their well-balanced, juicy acidity, the Gewürztraminers from Alto Adige are easy to drink, due in no small part to the fact that this vine is often planted at higher elevations up to 700 metres (2,300 feet). Since the late 1990s, the variety of styles in wines made from this grape has expanded considerably. Whether totally dry, with a discreet amount of residual sugar, or as a mead-like des-sert wine, every year sees new, superb specialties.

Cultivation zone: primarily in the Bassa Atesina (Termeno and Cortaccia), but also in other wine-growing areas of Alto Adige Growing method: old plantings on Pergola trellis, new plantings on Guyot Preferred soil: loamy soils rich in lime Synonyms: Traminer (in Italian: Traminer Aromatico) Serving temperature: 10-12 °C (50-54 °F) Recommended pairings: when dry: as an aperitif, with Asian dishes, or shellfish; with residual sugar: with foie gras and pâtes: as a dessert wine: with cheese and desserts

The Gries winery (founded in 1908) and Santa Maddalena winery (founded in 1930) joined forces in 2001 to form the Cantina Produttori Bolzano. Two of Alto Adige’s most prestigious reds, St. Magdalener and Lagrein are grown around Bolzano. The higher vineyards are planted with white grape varieties that deliver Alto Adige’s famous crisp white wines. The grapes which go into the prestigious wines most closely associated with Bolzano are grown in very finest sites and only the highest quality fruit is delivered to our winery. Quality starts in the vineyard.

The abbey of Novacella was founded in 1142. The wine production makes part of the tra-dition of the abbey. The territory is in the northern most part of Italy in which grapes are grown. The climate is extreme, therefore the wines have very typical characteristics and they are aromatic, fresh and rich.

The Colterenzio winery is located at Cornaiano /Italy, one of the several picturesque villages nestling among vineyards in the area of cool, rolling vine-covered hills to the south of Bolzano. Our farmers cultivate over 300 hectares in a winegrowing area extending from Bolzano to the very south of Alto Adige rich in variety, lying at altitudes between 250 and 550 metres with the most diverse soils, microclimates and ripening phases. Our winery’s maxim is to preserve the quality of the grapes delivered by the growers, to maximise and hone it with sensitivity and drawing on experience, a commitment to tradition but with an openness towards modern winemaking technology. The task of establishing a balance between passion, creativity and technology is a daily challenge. Our wines unite crisp, Alpine fragrance with Mediterranean spice and warmth.

We have been vinifying our own grapes since 1880, the year when our winery was foun-ded. Today our wine estate consists of around 50 hectares of vineyards, all located in the area of Montagna and Egna on the Cislon hillside, at altitudes ranging from 240 and 800 metres above sea level. Soils (from porphyritic sand to clay and richly calcareous soils) and microclimates vary enormously. The characteristics we strive to achieve in our wines are: typicality, quality and longevity.

The Erste & Neue Winery, founded in 1900, is one of the oldest wine co-operatives in South Tyrol. About 500 members produce the grapes that give our wines their unmistakable cha-racter on approximately 300 hectares of vineyards. At an altitude of between 200 and 600 metres above sea level, on a vast variety of soils that includes sands, clays and gravels, from volcanic to calciferous types, practically every vine variety grown in South Tyrol prospers here. Our winemaker, Gerhard Sanin, pays special attention to the local grape varieties of Ver-natsch, Lagrein and Gewürztraminer, as well as Weißburgunder (Pinot Blanc), which is not native to South Tyrol, but together with the Sauvignon blanc grape each year produces outstanding quality on the cultivated slopes. The interaction of highly motivated members, the latest cellarage techniques and an eye for tradition are the secrets behind the success of our winery!

Our estates are located on the hillsides flanking both sides of the Adige valley. Tramin-Ter-meno on the western side is favoured more by the early morning sun, while Mazon on the eastern side benefits from the intense late afternoon sun. These steep hillside sites offer the finest conditions for producing top quality wine. Over the years many growers have relinquished their steep vineyards to cultivate vines with less work on the valley floor, whilst we have remained true to our conviction that great wines can only be grown on the hillsides. We take special pride in our family-owned vineyards which we work with great passion and dedication, for we are convinced that premium wines can only be produced in the vineyard by uncompromising, hard and painstaking work. Martin Foradori Hofstätter now manages the estate and cellar in the fourth generation.

Founded in 1855, for over one hundred and fifty years wine making has been a part of the Lageder family’s history, Alois Lageder, the current leader of the company, representing the fourth generation. The total vineyard area farmed by Alois Lageder includes some 150 acres. Grapes are also purchased from long-term contracted grape growers with vineyards in selected sites of the Alto Adige appellation. Total production is around 125.000 cases, of which about 75% are white wines. Alois Lageder’s particular attention goes towards the selection and best possible utilisation of terroir. Respect for the environment has priority based on the principles of holistic thinking and acting. All estate vineyards are farmed using the methods and principles of biodynamic viticulture. Completed in 1996, the newly constructed winemaking facilities at the historic Löwengang estate in Magrè unite the highest ecological and technological standards.

After having completed his studies of viticulture and different experiences inseveral renowned wineries, Gabriel Martini and his father Karl founded their own company in 1979. Taking account of each vineyard individuality we select only the best for our wines. The wide assortment of wines we produce is due to the particular climate and landscape of Alto Adige. Intensive collaboration with the farmers and a skilled know-how in labora-tory work are the grants for a excellent wine quality. Each load of grapes is appraised to ensure that quality standards are at their peak. Our creations are not only famous for their authenticity, but also for their good balance between product and price, which was honou-red for several times by different wine-specialists and wine-juries. The authenticity and particularity of our wines are typical and estimated by the individualists of wine lovers.

The gently-sloping, sun-drenched mountainsides and hills around Kaltern (Caldaro) straddling the famous “Wein-Strasse” and beside the Lake of Kaltern seem created for the production of fine wines. Manincor, meaning “hand-on-heart”, with its magnificent manor house dating from 1608 embodies the area’s long, rich wine tradition. The historical com-plex has been cautiously extended to include a winery and cellar concealed beneath vines, Manincor’s 90 acres of vineyards are biodynamically cultivated. Factors which contribute to the production of superlative wines each with its own unique character include the diverse terroirs, painstaking work in the vineyards and Count Michael Goëss-Enzenberg’s relentless, uncompromising strive for quality.

With the arrival of Benedictine friars from Muri (Switzerland) in 1845, a new phase in the history of wine industry for the monastery in Gries began. They used to take their order rule “ora et labora” very seriously, even in that which concerned the vineyards. Today, Muri-Gries represents mainly a red wine producing company (85%), whilst the production of white wine accounts for 15%. Amongst all the red wines Lagrein accounts for 80% of the total. The remaining 20% is shared amongst other varietals such as Schiava, Santa Maddalena, Pinot Nero and Moscato Rosa. The white wine varietals, Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay and Gewürztraminer are also of note.

Meran, the well known spa town where the 300 sunny days a year pamper its guests, is called the pearl of Tyrol. The Mediterranean climate of Meran allows the many selected grapes in the vineyards to flourish. Powerful, elegant and beneficial wines are produced at the winery „Meraner Weinkellerei“. And once you have tasted one of these noble wines, you will know that the sentence „this is what the sun of Meran tastes like!“ is not just a dry PR slogan, but rather the honest compliment of a famous wine lover. We invite you to taste our wines.

Ours is a family business which was founded in 1852. We devote ourselves to the traditio-nal production of classic Alto Adige wines and we are particularly proud of the speciality wines we make using the grapes exclusively from our vineyards. Between August 2002 and May 2003 we completed the rebuilding and extensions of our winery (wine-vault, office, Vinotheque etc.), all in preparation for the technical and economical challenges of the future.

Following the motto, unity is strength, the Cellars Nals and Margreid combined their heritages to start a new tradition in 1985. Today, 140 growers cultivate 150 hectares of vine-yards in various and diverse vineyard sites, some reaching up to 3,280 feet in altitude. Three ranges of wines are produced: the classical line, the single vineyards and the premier Baron Salvadori wines, which are named for the winery’s building in Margreid (the Manor of Baron Salvadori).

St. Pauls is one of the finest wine-growing areas of South Tyrol. Our grapes mature on ourslopes and hills under the best climatic conditions. The utmost care is needed from ripening to pressing so that our fully-matured grapes turn into our ‚liquid gold‘ through carefully monitored fermentation and give life to new wine. Our young wine develops slowly under the protective experience of our oenologists to its full strength and sophistication to fulfil our mission statement: A Passion for quality.

Our winery together with the estate comprising 30 hectares of vineyards is privately owned. Vines are cultivated according to the traditional pergola trellising system, as well as the international Guyot method. Production comprises 20% white and 80% red wines. The absolutely natural cultivation of the vines, the careful selection of the grapes in the vineyard in advance of the harvest and the exclusive use of our own produce are the main factors contributing to the production of these superb high quality wines.

The Terlan Growers’ Cooperative looks back on over 100 years of tradition and high quality wines. Our philosophy: wines with excellent keeping qualities, pedigree and character. The high mineral content of the soil imparts a distinctive minerally flavour to the wines and partly accounts for their extraordinary longevity.

Founded in 1848, the Tiefenbrunner Castel Turmhof Estate Winery is located at Entiklar in the Alto Adige province of Bolzano. Together with their oenologist Gerhard Sanin, the owners Herbert and Christof Tiefenbrunner, both trained oenologists, produce around 700,000 bottles per year, 70% of which are white, the remaining 30% red wines.

This Cantina is one of the oldest wineries in Alto Adige. Today, nearly 300 members pro-duce unique wines reflecting the region’s terroir and high altitude soils. With acres located in the communities of Tramin, Neumarkt, Montan and Auer, it is no wonder that Cantina Tramin is one of the most awarded wineries in Italy, particularly famous for its Gewürz-traminer wines.

In the modern building of the cooperative in Chiusa the winery produces over a million bottles of wine per year, 80% of which are DOC – wines. Since there are ideal conditions for white grape types in the Valle Isarco, the Cantina Produttori Valle Isarco has specia-lized in producing white wines, which have earned the winery an excellent reputation at home and abroad. Owing to the quality of the grapes and their exemplary processing, the whites of the Cantina Produttori Valle Isarco are among the most sought after of Alto Adige’s wines. The elegance and spirit of the wines originate from the Cantina Produttori Valle Isarco and their members’ slogan: Uncompromising quality!

I was lucky to marry into one of our region’s most prestigious wine estates at a time when Alto Adige was becoming recognised as one of the world’s finest producers of superlative wines. I jumped at the chance to take over the family’s two top estates, both located within the boundaries of our region’s best known wine village – Castel Ringberg, which overlooks the Lake of Caldaro, and Kastelaz, a steep, south-facing hillside, Tramin’s major landmark. The challenge in changing profession from architect to winemaker was at first daunting. In the meantime my wines have scooped some of Italy’s highest awards.
