Almost two years ago, Selwyn District Council and Plunket Canterbury got together and a decision was made to fund a Selwyn based group of Plunket v o l u n t ee r s t o b ec ome qual if ied Chi ld Restraint Technicians. Liberty ClaytonLiberty ClaytonLiberty ClaytonLiberty Clayton, a Kirwee Plunket volunteer jumped at the chance to complete the course and can now boast that she is an NZTA qual if ied Chi ld Restraint Technician. “Since completing the course, we have set up our own Facebook page, Selwyn Car Seat Champions, where people can message us to arrange an appointment for car seat installation or to receive advice. We have also arranged or attended many events in the Selwyn District to address car seat safety,” explained Liberty. One such event is happening on Saturday, April 30th at the Kirwee Hall, from 10.30-11.30am. Two local Child Restraint Techs will be at the Kirwee Plunket Toy Library's fortnightly session to offer face-to-face advice and to check the installation of seats. “We are hoping to spread the word around the area not only about this event, but about our free

service in general. Our volunteers are passionate about child safety and we want to help as many families as we can to protect their children while travelling on our roads,” said Liberty. The car seat champions provide information and advice on rear-facing, versus forward-facing seats, booster seats and harnesses, can advise if locking clips or tether straps are required, and know all legal requirements for children under seven years of age. Ngaire TinningNgaire TinningNgaire TinningNgaire Tinning, the Road Safety Coordinator for the Selwyn District Council said, “Selwyn District Council is proud to be

able to support the Selwyn Car Seat Champions group. They are doing a remarkable job to help local families with the checking and installation of child restraints in our district. Over the past eighteen months they have assisted many parents individually and also attended a number of checking clinics like the one to be held shortly in Kirwee. Their voluntary work contributes greatly towards the safety of babies and young children, as passengers, and it is a much valued service that this group has made available within our communities,” she ended. “There’s nothing better than a good laugh. A real LOL (laughing out loud) moment and one that’s shared with an audience of others.” These were the comments of Stuart Stuart Stuart Stuart Wright Wright Wright Wright from Sheffield having just attended a ‘Sons of a Bitch’ performance at Brooksdale, Springfield, last Sunday with close to 200 others. “The hour long comedy show was preceded by Springfield musician Mel ParsonsMel ParsonsMel ParsonsMel Parsons, who had the crowd enthralled with songs from her recently acclaimed Drylands album. “The crowd were laughing almost continuously,” Stuart said. “The obese Labrador and Amelia’s and Emma’s version of ‘thank god I’m a country boy’, are definitely something to be watched out for. “The Sons of a Bitch/Mel Parsons woolshed tour is a must see if you enjoy laughter with a country slant and great music from one of New Zealand’s rising talents.” When completed on May 1st, the tour will have seen aud ienc e s l a ugh ing i n Windwhistle (two shows), Mount Somers, Springfield (two shows) and the Rakaia Gorge.

ACROSS THE STREET ACROSS THE WORLD

THE BEST MOVES ARE MADE WITH GRACE

Springfield based artist, Vicky Vicky Vicky Vicky PeacockPeacockPeacockPeacock is well-known locally and nat iona l ly for her magnificent art works. However, it is not only her talent as an artist that has made her so popular throughout New Zealand; it is her contagious passion and enthusiasm for promoting and teaching art. Vicky is a qualified primary school teacher and artist with an Honours degree specialising in Visual Art and Art Education. A true believer that education and creative expression are crucial elements in child development, Vicky has begun to teach weekly art classes in Sheffield for 5-12 year olds. “There will be a focus on painting and drawing and if there is a demand, I will look into a more creative exploration based lesson later in the year, for mixed age groups,” explained Vicky excitedly. A woman of many talents, Vicky is a relief teacher at Darfield Pre-school and Nursery, as well as at various local schools, she runs a weekly gymnastics club in

Springfield and also has a keen interest in teaching music. Plus she’s a self-proclaimed doting mum to two beautiful and busy girls under six years old. Vicky’s contribution to promoting art in the local and wider community is commendable. She is visibly passionate about art and music and has advised that she is planning to start facilitating keyboard lessons later this year (another of her many talents!). “My long term goal (dream) is to set up some kind of Art and Music Education centre for children (and adults) to pursue lessons - (specifically small group keyboard lessons in addition to art lessons). I just think it would be great to have this kind of facility in the area,” Vicky enthused.

After many enquiries, there is a strong possibility of a pizza and paint night specifically for adults in the near future. “I have been approached by quite a few adults about classes for them, but at this stage I would like to get the children’s classes up and running and look at adult classes further down the line,” Vicky explained. All of this planning and organising for the future has been taking place in between commissioned paintings - spec i f ic to the buyers requirements, along with the several murals that Vicky has been invited to both design and/or paint with children. Search for Vicky Peacock NZ artist on Facebook for further information.

Vicky Peacock dreams of creating an art and music education centre in Selwyn.

Darfield local Hannah Cossey Hannah Cossey Hannah Cossey Hannah Cossey is part of a team of other young adults who have just jetted off to India for two weeks. The trip to India is not for the usual purpose of tourism, souvenirs and traditional food though, Hannah is on a mission to better understand how people live there. The knowledge and understanding gained during the trip will better equip Hannah to understand the needs specific to India as part of a global mission. Hannah has been part of a two y e a r t e am l e a d e r s h i p development course which has a particular emphasis on local and global missions. Last year, she spent a week, locally in Christchurch, working with agencies who help people on the margins of society. This also inc luded observ ing how prisoners are supported with

reintegration into the community once released, as well as serving with the City Mission. Hannah and her team begin their experience in Delhi before heading to Calcutta where they will meet up with Freeset, and other agencies working with local people to give them a brighter future. Freeset helps women leave the sex trade by offering them alternative

employment - they make bags and clothing which is sold around the world. One of these outlets is Liminal Apparel in Addington, they sell Freeset items, which in turn support women and girls in India. Further information on both Liminal Apparel and Freeset can be found by searching on Facebook.

Against a backdrop of stunning scenery, willing helpers, Hugh Williams, Graeme Dawson, Warwick Wilson and Jim Collier

assisted with making the fundraising day a success.

A large crowd of both local, and enthusiasts from as far afield as Clyde, gathered at Flock Hill Station on Sunday morning to support the Malvern Parish 4x4 fundraiser. Richard Hill Richard Hill Richard Hill Richard Hill of Flockhill gave an insightful talk to those present on issues surrounding high country farming, and in particular the serious on-going problem of wilding pines. Driving through Flock Hill the group were able to see the impressive programme of fencing and roading which is currently being undertaken. Those participating found the sightings of the Poulter, Esk, and Waimakariri Rivers, when they stopped for lunch, totally breathtaking. The group were treated constantly, throughout the journey, to a vast variety of spectacular views. Event organisers are grateful to Richard and Anna Hill Anna Hill Anna Hill Anna Hill for allowing them access to see what lies beyond the main highway.

Helen Moulder brought the play ‘Gloria’s Handbag’ to life.

Gloria’s Handbag, performed by Helen Moulder Helen Moulder Helen Moulder Helen Moulder at the Glenroy Hall on Saturday, April 17th 2016 was pronounced a huge success. Glenroy Hall was packed and the buzz of excitement was palpable. It seemed the reputation of Helen Moulder had preceded her. The play was about Gloria, aged 97 years grappling with ageing, what to do with her ‘stuff’ and the possibility of moving into a retirement home. During the narrative Helen brilliantly represented the roles of six different characters. She interspersed this with the singing of excerpts from Mozart ’ s Mozart ’ s Mozart ’ s Mozart ’ s operat ic ar ias demanding a vocal range from coloratura soprano to bass baritone, dazzling magical tricks, audience participation, plenty of humour and the ubiquitous handbag! Helen used a simple set but exper t ly cu l t i v at ed t he imagination of her audience to bring this play to life. The audience’s enjoyment was unmistakable given the frequent laughter and spontaneous applause. At the end of the play Helen proceeded to judge the

handbag competition. Many remarkable handbags were produced, some having been made specially for the occasion.

West Melton school (WMS) sent a small team of students recently to the Lincoln Zone Duathlon. The Duathlon was held at Motukarara Raceway on April 11th and saw over twenty primary schools competing for placings at the event. The students were required to run, bike and then run again - the distances were dependent on age group. For many WMS students, this was their first time participating in an event such as this and they embraced the challenge. “It was great to see them encourage each o t h e r , s h ow i n g g r e a t sportsmanship and resilience! Our team also provided a lot of extra marshalls, helping with putting bikes away and cone collection at the end. An amazing effort,” commented a delighted WMS spokesperson, Rita SpadoniRita SpadoniRita SpadoniRita Spadoni. Isla Mc.
