Organisers were elated with the huge turnout of competitors at the Sheffield Rugby Club’s inaugural Mountain Bike Race, held on Sunday, February 21st. In attendance were 96 mountain bikers, ranging in age from 15 through to 66 years old. All were keen to conquer the challenging 25 kilometre course through the picturesque Canterbury Plains. Event organiser, Tom Ferguson Tom Ferguson Tom Ferguson Tom Ferguson explained that the event would not have been possible without the help of their sponsors, land owners and volunteers. “We very much appreciate the help of Candace McGirr, Joost Kepers Candace McGirr, Joost Kepers Candace McGirr, Joost Kepers Candace McGirr, Joost Kepers and Grant HunterGrant HunterGrant HunterGrant Hunter for their first aid skills, along with the culinary skills of our ‘barbecuers’ - they were excellent. There are so many people to thank for making this event possible and I appreciate every single one of them,” he said with a grateful smile. The event was an outstanding success, with all proceeds going directly to the Sheffield Rugby Club, to foster young players and keep the Club’s tradition alive. Thanks to the generous sponsorship arranged, every participant went home with either a competition, or a spot prize - ranging from jet boat rides and pub dinners, through to frozen chickens.
There was a very competitive line-up at the start. Mike Smart Mike Smart Mike Smart Mike Smart took out the fastest time overall in 1.15 hours and the fastest woman was Siona CollierSiona CollierSiona CollierSiona Collier, who fittingly received her prize from the major sponsor, Matt Collier Matt Collier Matt Collier Matt Collier of Farmlands (her husband!). “What a great turn out we had! The weather gods turned on a brilliant day with not a breath of wind - plus there was a great sense of pride and accomplishment, along with very tired legs! We are definitely looking forward to organising the race again next year.” Tom concluded.

Courtenay Tennis Club called on the entertaining and wacky Bingo Babes to assist with their Fundraiser, held in Kirwee last weekend. The Babes - ‘Ethel and Bethel’, hosted a night of games and hilarity which saw an all 180 ticket sell-out. Also at the event was an auction of prizes generously gifted to the Courtenay Tennis Club for the occasion, including a helicopter ride, Crusaders jersey signed by the team and a four course home-cooked meal for six (including wine). Half time games entertained the crowd and many laughs were had while playing balloon darts, coin toss (closest coin to the bottle wins) and donated ‘mystery’ bottles. The night concluded with a delicious supper after the Bingo had been played, there were many fabulous prizes won and a good catch-up with friends was enjoyed. Courtenay Tennis Club were thrilled with the success of the evening and due to the generous donations of local

businesses have raised in excess of $5,500 which will be put toward a new tennis court. The Bingo event hosts ‘Ethel and Bethel’ were effusive in
their praise of the Kirwee organisers Amy Truscott Amy Truscott Amy Truscott Amy Truscott and Rebecca Turner Rebecca Turner Rebecca Turner Rebecca Turner - commenting on what a well run and enjoyable evening it had been.
On February 22nd, three year old Harrison Baker (pictured alongside) along with
brother Ryan (6) and mum Erin put flowers in Darfield road cones in memory of those
lost in the Christchurch earthquake, five years ago. This was of course the
second time in a few months that those in Malvern were given a severe shake-up - with the first property and emotionally damaging quake occurring in this area, six years ago,
this September 4th. 12.51pm, February 22nd will always be
remembered as the day Christchurch and Canterbury changed forever - Kia Kaha.

Selwyn locals Amelia Dunbar Amelia Dunbar Amelia Dunbar Amelia Dunbar and Mel Parsons Mel Parsons Mel Parsons Mel Parsons are once again joining forces with Aucklander Emma Newborn Emma Newborn Emma Newborn Emma Newborn to bring a brand new double bill - music with theatre and comedy to twenty woolsheds around the South Island, including three dates in Selwyn. The ‘Sons of a Bitch’ and Mel Parsons woolshed tour kicks off in Windwhistle (Quartz Hill Station) on March 30th, then winding its way south before coming back to Springfield (Brooksdale) on April 29th, and

finishing up in the Rakaia Gorge (Snowdon Station) on May 1st. The trio last toured Selwyn with the hugely popular ‘The Bitches’ Box’ and Mel Parsons show back in 2013, with word of mouth ensuring all shows sold out in record time. The show is in two halves, kicking off with a solo set by singer/songwriter Mel from her award-winning new album ‘ D r y l a n d s ’ , f o l l o w e d by the hilarious ‘Sons of a Bitch’ (from the makers of The Bitches’ Box) featuring a swag
of delightful (and disgusting) dogs. Anyone who has seen ‘The Bitches’ Box’ will know this is a night not to be missed. Each show will kick off with a fundraising barbecue for the local school, and a licensed cash ba r w i l l opera te throughout the evening. Tickets are on sale now and expected to sell out fast. Tickets are only available online, book now at eventfinda.co.nz - see advertisement in this issue for full and further details.
Summer in Selwyn events continue over the coming weeks, with skate jams, drive-in movies and music on the green sessions. Five summer events in January attracted around 2,500 people. The first of six summer skate jams was held in Darfield on
February 10th with upcoming events to take place at Leeston, Tai Tapu, Lincoln and Prebbleton. Family drive-in movies will screen in Darfield on February 26th, and in March at Lincoln and Leeston. Music on the Green sessions
are also planned at Lincoln, Darfield (March 4th) and Rolleston. These sessions are new to Selwyn in 2016 and a chance to pack a picnic and enjoy summer’s balmy evenings while being entertained by great local musicians in Selwyn’s smokefree parks.

On Valentine’s Day, Sunday morning, February 14th local pilot Michael Oakley Michael Oakley Michael Oakley Michael Oakley of Ballooning Canterbury, carefully manoeuvered his hot air balloon over the sunny skies of Ashburton so paramedic Wellingtonian, Anna CochraneAnna CochraneAnna CochraneAnna Cochrane, could smash a world record. A world record for the highest static trapeze act, while suspended from a hot air balloon! Early morning fog didn't hamper the attempt, although it did delay the balloon takeoff, while the massive safety, filming and support crew worked tirelessly to ensure Anna was ready to attempt her daredevil feat. Ballooning Canterbury is a f ami ly owned bus iness operating three modern balloons with the latest t echno logy and sa f e t y equipment. “The record attempt was twelve months in the planning,” Michael commented, “and along with the filming aspects, riggers and marketers there was a huge safety aspect to consider too. My wife, KateKateKateKate warned me of the potential dangers and suggested I give up on the idea of participating,” Michael said with a smile. Michael, who was born and bred in the area, is a fifth generation farmer and is also a keen, and award winning, glider pilot with years of experience in cross country soaring. Anna commented that while she
would happily have undertaken this attempt on the quiet - she was passionate about raising funds for the Big Brothers and Big Sisters charity and believed in using any platform she could, to do good. “I wanted to raise funds for Big Brothers Big Sisters NZ because supporting youth is a necessary ingredient for a healthy society. Each year, over 900 young, vulnerable, New Zealand people, aged between six and eighteen years, benefit from the support of a carefully screened and

Eventually the weather cleared, everything was set and Anna climbed down onto the trapeze below the hot air balloon basket, with assistance from her rope access technician. She was about thirty seconds into the routine when she heard the ribs on her left side make ‘a couple of pops’. Cont on next page...Cont on next page...Cont on next page...Cont on next page...

After much consideration and a lot of soul searching, it is with regret that the owners of Darfield Collision Repairs Ltd announce that the business will close its doors for good, at the end of March 2016. Darfield Coll ision Repairs Limited owners, Stu Mintrom Stu Mintrom Stu Mintrom Stu Mintrom and Pip Graham Pip Graham Pip Graham Pip Graham have owned the successful business since 2006, but the inability to secure an ongoing lease on the premises they operate from in Cardale Street has made them re evaluate their future. “Investing in purpose built premises elsewhere just isn’t one of our preferred choices,” said business co-owner Stu Mintrom. “We haven’t made this decision lightly, as the Company is extremely busy and generally has more work than it can handle. The necessity to comply with certain Insurance company r e q u i r e m e n t s e n t a i l s considerable capital investment without adequate return. We have also struggled to attract industry-required, fully-qualified
staff in Darfield, an ongoing problem to which many local business owners will attest.” “We have loved the daily customer contact and have many clients, especially senior clients, who will be sorely missed.” Both Pip and Stu thanked their clients for their support and are aware that some will find getting repairs done outside of the d is t r i c t a c ons iderab le inconvenience, and for this they apologise profusely. They thank all their staff, from throughout the years, for the hard work they’ve put in, and wish the current staff the very best of success in their next positions. While they are now fully booked for repairs up until their closing date they advise potential Insurance claims clients to contact their insurers for the details of an alternative repairer. “For any private work please don’t hesitate to contact me if you require help with finding a new repairer,” Stu concluded.
Anna performed her trapeze act for five minutes at heights of between 10,400 and 11,400 feet.

"I'm a paramedic, so I assessed myself while hanging upside down.” "I thought, there's definitely something wrong, but I can breathe OK, and I have spent this long trying to be here." Anna changed her routine, improvising with what she was able to do, and hoped she wouldn't puncture a lung. "It was the most painful performance of my life."
Her routine lasted for over five minutes at an altitude of between 10,400 feet and 11,400 feet. The previous highest static trapeze world record to beat was at 2,171 feet. A l t h o ug h s o r e , A n n a ' s adrenaline was still pumping when her feet touched solid ground again and she had to be rushed off to hospital. Anna had hoped to top off her high flying experience by sky
diving from the hot air balloon afterwards, but her injury prevented her from doing so. To be accepted as a Guinness World Records title, Anna had a sp ec i a l i s t w i t n e ss and independent witness on board the balloon and currently GPS data is being verified. Once all the evidence has been submitted, the process can take up to two weeks to be assessed and the record confirmed.

Last week Rod FrewenRod FrewenRod FrewenRod Frewen, Southfuels local ly based account manager, visited Springfield School to present them wi th their fourth Chromebook package thanks to the Company’s Fuel for School’s programme. Fuel for Schools is a school sponsorship programme that provides all schools throughout New Zealand with an innovative way to raise additional funds. Southfuels set aside a portion of their marketing budget each year to absorb the costs of donations so their customers are not charged a premium on their fuel for participating in the programme. Customers can participate by nominating a participating school who will receive fifty cents for every one hundred litres of bulk fuel they have delivered. Southfuels accrue these funds and when a participating school has reached $1,000 in sponsorship through the programme, they can choose to redeem it with a technology package or a sports equipment package.
Springfield School Principal Judith Beales Judith Beales Judith Beales Judith Beales said, “thanks to the Fuel for Schools programme we n ow h ave en ou gh Chromebooks to allow all our year 6 students the ability to use their own for their daily learnings, which is fantastic. We really appreciate what all the people in the community and Southfuels are doing to support us through this programme.” The bulk fuel and lubricant suppl ier, Southfuels has developed this unique initiative which has seen them fostering inquiring rural minds around the country. The New Zealand owned and operated company founded the programme as a way to give back to the predominantly rural community in which they operate. Now in its sixth year the programme has seen just on $500,000 worth of monetary payments and in more recent years physical items, in the form of technology and sports gear donated back into schools around the country. With over $25,000 worth of payment and product going into
the Selwyn region the area has been directly benefiting from this excellent initiative over the past few years. Hororata School is the next to benefit with Rod scheduled to present a mixed array of sporting equipment at their beginning of March, celebration assembly. “The school has been extremely grateful for the support from Southfuels and the Fuel for School programme. From coming along to the PTA barbecue, to their involvement at the Hororata Highland Games, we just can’t thank them enough,” said Hororata Primary School office manager, Penny Oliver.Penny Oliver.Penny Oliver.Penny Oliver. As other schools in the area close in on the redemption mark it won’t be long before Rod is calling on another local school with an array of items to benefit pupils. To get involved with the programme or for more information - get in touch with Rod Frewen at Southfuels.
L-R: Judith Beales (Principal), Penny White, Danielle Milliken, Brooke Stevenson, Angus Johnson, Blake Ford. Looking delighted with their Chromebook package.

Our February meeng was a coach oung to Ohinetahi
at Governors Bay, the home and garden of Sir Miles
Warren and we were both surprised and delighted to be
greeted by Sir Miles himself. AMer a brief introducon he
handed us over to two members of his team, who
guided us through this amazing garden. Purchased by Sir
Miles forty years ago, this property has evolved into the
creaon it is today, suffering earthquake damage along
the way. However, the original stones from the house
have been recycled around the property enhancing
many areas. The long view is a feature of this garden and
apparently Sir Miles has staff chopping bits off trees and
shrubs to enable you to catch a glimpse of the bay and
surrounding area. The red garden is another feature that
caused much interest and speculaon as to the one-
coloured garden theme, I personally found it stunning
although a few specimens were wilng in the heat.
Although the day was extremely hot we were not to
be defeated and many walked the perimeter of the
garden stopping for lunch along the way. The art
gallery and huge art pieces do?ed around were
another point of interest and created some stunning
photo opportunies. The white Formosa lilies were
another talking point, as were the rose beds and
herbaceous border. So all in all another great day
out, a day of some stylish sun hats and dresses,
enjoyment of a spectacular garden and the
company of Garden Club friends. Thanks must go
to Kate Campbell for organising such a
memorable day for us. Autumn Show next
month, soon be me for some serious
work outside!
Happy days.

In the final, at Mainpower Oval, at Rangiora, Sefton played Southbrook. I t was an extraordinarily close finish, with Sefton winning by one run. Sefton scored 223, all out. Southbrook replied with 222/2. Nine runs were required off the last over - it might have easily been a tie. The following are the placings of the remaining six clubs, from third to last: 3rd - Leeston/Southbridge 4th - Lincoln 5th - Sth. Malvern 6th - Greendale 7th - Oxford We should be proud of our two local clubs. I consider their placings very good, in a competition that was of a very high standard. They were always competitive. DRAW for Judd Cup Feb 27th: Kirwee v Sth. Malvern March 5th: Sth. Malvern v Greendale March 12th: Greendale v Kirwee March 19th: FINAL, at Kirwee Obviously, there is a bye each Saturday.

For the last 24 years Canterbury has played host to an annual auction of rare livestock breeds. It is the only auction of its type in New Zealand, and people come from the length and breadth of the country to attend. It is a fund raising and charity auction in support of the Rare Breeds Conservation Society, but also acts as an important event for people to swap and move genetics. The Canterbury branch of the Society is very active, and has many Malvern members. Recent Fieldays were held at the impressive Cheviot Sheep stud of FrancineFrancineFrancineFrancine and Stuart Murray Stuart Murray Stuart Murray Stuart Murray at Annat, followed by Tamworth pigs at the Aylesbury farm of Tim O’toole Tim O’toole Tim O’toole Tim O’toole and Julia BedfordJulia BedfordJulia BedfordJulia Bedford. The Malvern district has many breeders of such rare breeds including livestock and chooks etc, who together make a
significant contribution to maintaining a genetic pool of numerous va luab le and vulnerable breeds. Many lifestyle farmers prefer to keep one of these heritage breeds, knowing that they are not only getting a unique product, but also that they are able to contribute to conserving genetic
resources, and this pool of s m a l l b r e e d e r s a d d s significantly to the total population. Worldwide breeds are becoming extinct at about the rate of twelve a month, and many in New Zealand are significantly rarer than the Kakapo or Takahe. THE FIRST MESSAGE: Hey Bill. This is Alan next door. I’m sorry buddy, but I have a confession to make to you. I've been riddled with guilt these past few months. The truth is, I have been sharing your wife, day and night, when you're not around. In fact, probably more than you. I haven’t been geng it at home recently, but that's no excuse I know. The temptaon was just too much... I hope you will accept my sincerest apologies and forgive me. I promise that it won't happen again. Please come up with a fee for usage, and I'll pay you. Regards, Alan. THE ACTION: Bill, feeling insulted and betrayed, grabbed his gun, and shot his neighbour Alan. He returned home where he poured himself a sff drink and sat down on the sofa. He took out his
phone where he saw he has another message from Alan. THE SECOND MESSAGE : Hey Bill, This is Alan next door again. Sorry about the slight typo on my last text. I know you've figured it out anyway, but I’m sure you noced that my auto-correct changed ‘WiFi’ To ‘Wife’. Technology hey?!? Hope you saw the funny side of that. Regards, Alan
