January 10, 2020

Parents,

Today homeroom teachers gave students their 2018-2019 Individual Student Reports (ISR). ISRs contain individual testing results for each North Carolina test the student took at the end of last year. Students will receive an ISR for EOG math, EOG reading, and EOG or NCFE science. Students in 7th and 8th grade will also receive an ISR for NCFE social studies.

We want every student to be safe and to have a productive learning environment and

learning experience. If your child faces challenges at school or in the classroom, please

reach out first to the appropriate person such as classroom teacher for classroom

concerns or counselor for social concerns. If you feel that the concern remains or has not

been resolved, then please contact the grade level administrator.

Best,

Lisa Bailes, Principal

Did you know that your required fees cover these

necessary items?

• Student agendas

• Chromebook bags

• Locker cleanings

• Annual locker combo reset

These required fees are only $25 and we need your

help in collecting these unpaid fees. If you haven't

already done so, please visit

www.pay4schoolstuff.com to pay online or print this

form and pay via cash or check.

Many of you are already shopping on Amazon.com but did you

know that every time you shop on Amazon, you could be

donating to the PTO?

You can support the PTO every time you shop, at no cost to

you – when you shop Amazon through AmazonSmile. The

AmazonSmile Foundation will donate 0.5% of the purchase price

from your eligible AmazonSmile purchases.

To begin shopping for SCMS PTO, simply enter Amazon through our

unique link at https://smile.amazon.com/ch/45-2379655 . Once

you have chosen your charity, Amazon will remember this for

future visits; you do not need to select your charity each time you

shop. However, you do need to be sure that you are entering the

website through this link or http://smile.amazon.com. If you begin

shopping by going directly to amazon.com your purchase will not

be tracked by AmazonSmile and we will not receive the donation.

AmazonSmile is an excellent way for our families to

contribute to our school and our students without having to give up

any extra time or money!

Come by the school store and be entered in a raffle for a $10 target gift card! (The raffle will start Tuesday

Jan 14th and end on Jan 30th) We also have lots of binders, notebooks, earplugs, pencil pouches, water

bottles, string sacks, staplers, pens, pencils etc. and in matching colors too.

Attention Parents of rising 9th graders! Most of our students will be attending either South Mecklenburg High School or Providence High School

next year. The registration process for these students begins in January and extends through March

depending on the school. We will begin with Providence High School. The first event is a Parent Night at

South Charlotte Middle School featuring Tracey Harrill, Providence High School Principal. Please join us on

January 14th shortly before 6:30pm to hear all about PHS and the registration process. Your students will

hear a similar presentation during the school day from Ms. Jones, 8th grade counselor. We will continue to

keep you updated as the events unfold. Check our weekly Shockwave and website for additional

information. Information on South Mecklenburg events occurring in March will be coming. Thank you!

Middle school is an ideal time to start planning

for college and beyond. While students do not

need to know exactly what they want to do

when they graduate, it is good to expose them

to various professions and secondary-

educational opportunities.

As a former high school counselor, I wished that my incoming 9th graders had known more about the college

process. Students apply to colleges at the start of their senior year, so the only grades that colleges receive are

9th, 10th, and 11th grades. This means that their 9th grade year will be 1/3 of their GPA that colleges base

admissions on. However, it is not all about GPA, colleges are looking for continuity. They want students who

have demonstrated that they have a passion for something and are willing to work hard in that area. They see

this trait in students in student extracurricular activities – they want to see a student who has started

something in 9th grade (or before) and continued it throughout high school.

In order to address this and to get our students thinking about college and careers before high school, we are

having an exciting Counselor Coffee this month!

On January 29th (Wednesday) at 9am Timeka Ruffin, a CFNC (College Foundation of North Carolina) Regional

Representative will be at SCMS to give a presentation on what your student can be doing now to prepare for

college and a future career. Please plan on join us for this exciting conversation!

Second semester PE student reminder…

PE uniform orders can be made on-line on the SCMS website or by check to PE

teachers. Please have your student stop by to pick up an order form. Also, keep in mind that

students are encouraged to bring CLEAR water bottles to PE class. This could be

something as simple as a HT bottled water or a clear colored plastic as long as we can see the

liquid. Aluminum water bottles are not allowed. Don’t spend a lot of money as many are left

behind or lost.

Flu season is just now really getting underway with increasing numbers across the country. It is not too late to get your flu shot if you haven’t already.

Remember that the flu is usually associated with a fever of 100 or higher. Should your child wake up with a fever please do not give them Tylenol or ibuprofen and send them to school. Fever usually goes up at night and will be down in the morning. That does not mean they can come to school. They need to be fever free for 24 hours without medication before they can come back to school.

Please inform the school should your child get the flu. We would like to keep track of the numbers in our district.

As always wash your hands, cover your cough and stay hydrated!

Nurse Nancy

Last month Michael Knotek was a guest speaker in our 8th grade science classrooms. He was the

former Deputy Under Secretary of Energy for Science and Energy, and still is Maya's Grandpa. He

encouraged us to pursue careers in science, as there is an urgent need for engineers and scientists in

the National Labs Systems. We learned about how our climate is changing, impacts on climate and

ways to cool it down as scientists are studying new and innovative technologies to provide energy to

the world without adding too much carbon dioxide. Students were very engaged during his

presentations and have been asking great questions about climate and energy.

Thanks for your thoughtful lectures!

Online School Payments (OSP) - CMS has provided us with the opportunity to accept

payments for school events on-line. It is much like Athletics Pay-to-Play, comes with a

fee (4%), and allows you to pay at your convenience. If you choose to pay on-line, it also

relieves our teachers from the time taken to do the paperwork and to receipt and turn in

money or checks. Teachers will continue to take cash and checks as they always have.

Just sign in to: osp.osmsinc.com/CMS

Choose your student’s event and homeroom teacher, and make payment.

The teacher and Financial Secretary are sent advisements of your payment.

We hope you will take advantage of this opportunity. Through the year, events will be

added including field trips, textbooks, fees, and other payments.
