MTHATA Fever reporter Simbongile Mdle-dle was among the hundreds of media at-tending Nelson Mandela’s funeral and wasin Qunu in the days before the funeral.Re-porters usually tell readers about otherpeople’s views and experiences. In this re-port Sim tells about his personal experi-enceasareporterandbeingpartof thissad, though historic, occasion.
“I really feel honoured to have been part ofSouth Africa’s history during the reign of itsbeloved leader, Tata Nelson Rholihlahla Man-dela.
Even though journal-ists were not allowed togo close to the grave, just covering the eventand telling the worldhow history was beingmade, was absolutelyout of this world.
The next generationwill only learn abouthim in history bookswhilst the present gen-eration had the priv-iledge of spending timewith this internationalicon whilst he was stillalive.
I was only 15 yearsold when Mandela wasreleased from prison. As a boy from the bun-dus I would never havethought that one day I would be part of his fu-neral, let alone to see him face to face.
The first occasion was in 2003 at the Lusik-isiki College of Education where he was hand-ing out ARVs to patients with HIV/Aids.
In 2005 I saw him at the funeral of his secondoldest son, Makgatho Mandela, and 2007 at thewedding of his grandson Mandla Mandela.
Even though I never even shook his hand, itwas just a wonderful experience seeing him in
real life at not only on a television screen. His funeral and the days preceding it were,
for me, a combination of sadness, celebrationand anger. On the first announcement thatTata Mandela was no more, sadness was writ-ten on the faces of the people; sadness over theloss of a dearly loved leader who changed thelives of many people in this country.
At prayer services held in Mthatha and itssurrounds, the mourners’ faces were grief-stricken.
After the announcement Qunu was as quietas the grave. People just sat in front of theirtelevisions trying to believe that Madiba wasno more.
As the first initial days of unbelief and deni-al passed and peo-ple started to accepthis departure, theybegan to celebratehis life. Duringgatherings, such ashis night vigil, peo-ple started to singsongs praising himas a hero and em-phasizing therewould be no onelike him.
In his hometownand Mthatha, thou-sands of peoplewere eagerly wait-ing from early inthe morning for hisremains to arrive atMthatha airport.
Many people inQunu complained
of not being given an opportunity to see hisbody, despite the fact that he was born here.
The military plane carrying the body ofTata Madiba arrived at 13h30 in the companyof two helicopters. The human chain startedin front of Mthatha Airport and stretched tohis home in Qunu.
Mandela has been laid to rest after a longwalk to freedom. May his soul rest in peace.Sopitsho, Yemyem, Vela bembhentsele.

AS the Festive Season starts in earnest, theEasternCapeLiquorBoardwill embarkonanaggressive campaign to raise awareness andto educate people of the Eastern Cape aboutthe repercussions of excessive use of alcohol, especially drivers.Road accidents continue to haunt our socie-
ty inmore thanoneway.Alcohol is reportedlyone of the leading causes of road accidents inthe country. Drunk driving and erratic pedes-trians are a huge issue, and according to theRoad TransportManagement Corporation re-port, over the 2013 Easter Weekend 60% of fa-talities were Pedestrians.
The findings of the study on the socio-eco-nomic impact of liquor abuse commissionedby the Eastern Cape Liquor Board (ECLB) inthe past year, revealed that a fair share of thecountry’s most dangerous roads are locatedin the province of the Eastern Cape and thatthe number of accidents occurring on theseroads is disproportionately high. The Eastern Cape Liquor Board is commit-
ted and is working diligently to educate com-munities about the dangers of drunk driving, ensuring that the number of accidents thattake place as a result of alcohol abuse wouldbe reduced.
This initiative is done in partnership withother stakeholders, such as the DepartmentofTransport. The study revealed thatEasternCape roads contribute significantly to annualroad accident mortality rate, specifically ontheN2betweenEast LondonandMthatha andon the N2 between Mthatha and Kokstad.Working with other stakeholders, the East-
ern Cape Liquor Board will go all out to en-sure that drivers are informed about the dan-gers of driving under the influence of alcoholand drivers that are identified as having ex-ceeded alcohol consumption limit will facethe full might of the law.
During this time of the year, illegal tavernsusually abound and the Eastern Cape LiquorBoard duly sends a stern warning to peoplethat trade illegally to refrain from such prac-tices. Similarly, licensed liquor traders areencouraged to obey their trading conditionsby, among other things, not selling liquor tothe underage children, playing loud musicdisturbing their neighbourhood and sellingliquor throughout the night. In the eventwhere such cases are experienced by commu-nity members, we urge them to report themto the Eastern Cape Liquor Board using theirToll-Free Line 080 000 0420.
