Welcome to our Summer 2015 Newsletter

Dear friends, as I write this we have the most beautiful day on our Island - the sun is shining brightly and we are looking forward to our national “Tynwald Day” on Sunday although the open air ceremony at St John’s will not take place until Monday.

This time of year always instills a lot of national pride in our history, culture, heritage and well- being. Last evening I was doing a bit of web surfing as I enjoy collecting postcards and found a card featuring “The Manx Hotel “in Union Square, San Francisco. It never ceases to amaze me where the word “ Manx “ turns up.

I think the Wildlife Park stamps are terrific and the issue captures perfectly the work of the staff and volunteers who, day in and day out, keep the park open for our Island children and visitors. While speaking with staff at the Wildlife Park they told me they had purchased some hectares of the Amazon Rain Forest to support the conservation work which takes place in the area.

The wait is over -Buses Part 2 – when the stamps arrived all my hopes for the issue came to fruition, they are well worth the wait. Peter’s artwork combined with Richard Davis’ expertise has made for a highly commendable issue.

Sincere thanks to everyone who has taken part in our various competitions over the past few weeks.

I hope the prize winners have all enjoyed their winnings.

As we enter our 43rd year of postal independence a big thank you for your continuing support for Isle of Man Stamps and Coins.

All good wishes

General Manager, Isle of Man Stamps & Coins

Bicentennial Waterloo commemorationsRepresentatives for Isle of Man Stamps and Coins recently attended the commemorations in Belgium organised for the 200th Anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo where two spectacular Battle re-enactments took place. The event was held from 18th to 21st June and saw the Stamps and Coins division exhibit its recently released Battle of Waterloo collectables which were produced in collaboration with Waterloo 200.

Commemorations for the Bicentennial Anniversary of the Battle were arranged by ASBL ‘Bataille de Waterloo 1815’ who planned impressive re-enactments of the conflict which involved as many as 5000 re-enactors, 300 horses and 100 canons. Visitors also had the opportunity to wander through the bivouacs and discover life as it was for the troops 200 years ago.

View the full range of recently released Battle of Waterloo 200th Anniversary collectables on page 13.

WI stamps launch eventOn Saturday 25th April members of the Isle of Man Women’s Institute (WI) Federation converged at St Johns for the launch of Isle of Man Post Office’s rose scented WI Centenary stamps, which highlight some of the campaigns undertaken by the Institute since its establishment over 100 years ago in Anglesey.

Maxine Cannon, General Manager of Isle of Man Stamps and Coins introduced the newly released stamp issue which demonstrates the WIs campaigns including its current “Time to Talk” campaign which is around organ donation. Isle of Man Post Office has been working closely with the Isle of Man WI Federation to support and raise awareness of organ donation through the issue of its stamps, postmark advertising and an Island wide door to door leaflet drop. To add to this, representatives from the local WI also visited Isle of Man Postal Headquarters following the stamp launch to speak with interested staff members on the matter.

Issue Date: 11.05.15New Release - REPRINT

The Isle of Man Post Office congratulates the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on the birth of their daughter Her Royal Highness Princess Charlotte of Cambridge

over the May Day Bank Holiday weekend.

To mark this special occasion, we are issuing a miniature sheet of stamps, featuring the new arrival.Charlotte Elizabeth Diana Cambridge was born in the Lindo Wing of Queen Mary’s Hospital, Paddington, at 8.34am on May 2, 2015 and weighed 8lbs 3oz.The Duke of Cambridge was present for the birth. But it was Prince George who stole the show on the day. The first visitor to meet the new princess, he arrived at the hospital in his father’s arms and waved winningly at the crowd. Prince William then gave him a kiss on the forehead, before they disappeared into the hospital.Afterwards the new parents posed on the steps of the hospital for the world’s media, who had been waiting to snap the first pictures of the fourth in line to the throne, swaddled in a blanket and wearing a baby bonnet.William then drove his wife and daughter back to their London home, Apartment 1A, in Kensington Palace, where they spent their first night as a family of four. The following day the couple introduced Charlotte to her grandparents. Kate’s mother Carole Middleton was the first to arrive, driving herself into the palace with her daughter Pippa in the passenger seat. Her husband Michael turned up separately.Less than two hours later Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall arrived in an Audi estate car. As Prince Charles drove through the gates, Camilla beamed at the gathered crowd. However the princess did not have her first audience with the Queen until she was three days old because the Monarch spent the Bank Holiday weekend at Sandringham. She went straight to Kensington Palace to meet her fifth great-granddaughter on Tuesday, after driving down from Norfolk, and spent 30 minutes with the young family. The Duke of Edinburgh visited later that day.

Tuesday also marked the day when the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge formally register their daughter’s birth. William signed the birth register at Kensington Palace as ‘Prince of the United Kingdom’, witnessed by Westminster Register Office registrar Alison Cathcart.William and Kate sought the blessing of both the Queen and Prince Charles before announcing that they were going to name their daughter Charlotte Elizabeth Diana in tribute to her grandfather, great-grandmother and grandmother. ‘The baby will be known as Her Royal Highness Princess Charlotte of Cambridge,’ Kensington Palace said.Aides revealed that William and Kate chose Charlotte because they ‘simply liked the name’ but were aware of the ‘happy coincidence’ that Charlotte is the feminine form of Charles in French. The name, which is also the middle name of Kate’s sister Pippa Middleton, who was the couple’s bridesmaid, also has royal links - George III’s wife Queen Charlotte was a keen botanist, who founded Kew Gardens.William and Kate chose the middle name Elizabeth in tribute to the Queen, who will take over from Queen Victoria as the longest-ruling monarch in British history later this year. It also both Kate’s and Carole’s middle name - they were named after Carole’s grandmother Elizabeth Harrison. Finally they selected the name Diana in memory of William’s late mother – William gave Kate her diamond and sapphire engagement ring – but decided not to use it as her first name as it would have been ‘a millstone around her neck’. ‘I think we will let those names speak for themselves,’ added the aide. The arrival of Princess Charlotte was celebrated across the country. The Honourable Artillery Company fired a 62-gun salute and played the Stevie Wonder hit ‘Isn’t She Lovely?’

It was on 2nd June 1953, to a peal of bells at Westminster Abbey, that the Queen undertook the first significant ceremonial occasion in her long reign – her Coronation. Broadcast on television for the first time, at the Queen’s request (an estimated 27 million people in Britain tuned in), the ceremony displayed all the pomp and circumstance for which Britain has become renowned. Wearing a white satin gown, designed by couturier Norman Hartnell and the George IV State Diadem, The Queen was carrying a white bouquet, presented to her by the Worshipful Company of Gardeners. The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh were driven from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey in the Gold State Coach, drawn by eight Windsor grey geldings. At 12.33pm in front of 8,251 guests, she became the 39th Sovereign and sixth Queen to be crowned in her own right by the Archbishop of Canterbury at Westminster Abbey.

Since then the Queen has marked a series of landmarks in her reign, including the investiture of her eldest son, Prince Charles, as Prince of Wales, on 1st July 1969, in front of 4,000 guests, inside the medieval walls of Caernarfon Castle. She has celebrated her Silver, Golden and Diamond Jubilees, with street parties, pop concerts and pageants – and has even earned herself a gold disc from the record industry for her ‘Party at the Palace’ CD.

The Queen is intrinsically linked to Britain’s pomp and circumstance, whether conducting the Order of the Garter ceremony, the most senior and oldest British Order of Chivalry, at Windsor Castle; taking her birthday salute during the Trooping of the Colour; or attending the State Opening of Parliament, one of the most important events in the parliamentary calendar.

Her popularity was cemented during her Diamond Jubilee celebrations in 2012, which began when she attended the Epsom Derby and ended at Buckingham Palace with an RAF fly past featuring the Red Arrows. The nation joined in a Big Jubilee Lunch – Prince Charles and The Duchess of Cornwall made a surprise visit to a pre-pageant feast outside Fortnum & Mason. The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh travelled down the Thames in the Royal Barge during the Jubilee Pageant and there was a concert at Buckingham Palace, organised by ‘Take That’ singer Gary Barlow.

The weekend culminated with a service at St Paul’s Cathedral, and a Carriage Procession to Buckingham Palace. Not only did it display Britain’s pomp and circumstance at its finest but it revealed how much the nation loved its monarch.

The Isle of Man Post Office is proud to celebrate the reign of Britain’s best loved monarch. To mark her importance to the

Commonwealth, our set of eight stamps portrays some of the most important ceremonial occasions in Her Majesty the Queen’s reign.

T he Isle of Man Post Office is very pleased to present this colourful collection of six stamps to showcase a selection of the public transport buses in service

on the Isle of Man in the 1930s and 40s.

Leyland Cub KPZ1Douglas Corporation Transport acquired a total of six Leyland Cubs between 1936 and 1939. Suitable for one person operation, they were often crewed by lady drivers during the six years of the Second World War. After withdrawal from service, several of the Cubs found use as hen-houses but, regrettably, none survived into preservation.Illustrated outside the now-demolished Omnibus Depot, York Road, Douglas.

Leyland/MCW Olympic HR40The Leyland/MCW Olympic, named to coincide with the London Olympic Games of 1948, was Isle of Man Road Services first underfloor-engined model and a radical departure from other vehicles in the fleet. One of the Olympics survives on the Isle of Man in private ownership and took part in the Olympic Torch Relay on 2nd June 2012.Illustrated leaving Ballasalla.

Leyland Tiger PS1Following the end of World War II, bus operators began ordering replacement vehicles and demand was such that difficulties were experienced in obtaining new buses. Isle of Man Road Services were able to obtain four new Tiger PS1 chassis from Leyland Motors but, as they could not find a body builder to complete them, the chassis were shipped to the Isle of Man and stored, then shipped back to the UK around eighteen months later for the bodies to be fitted. One of the Tigers survives in private ownership on the Isle of Man.Illustrated outside Ramsey Bus Garage.

Daimler CWA6With wartime restrictions on the availability of new buses, Douglas Corporation Transport had no new deliveries after 1939 until they were able to acquire several buses with ‘utility’ bodywork in 1945, as shown on this Daimler CWA6. These buses did very well for utility vehicles and were not finally withdrawn from service until 1970, still retaining the original wooden seats of a type more usually found on park benches. One of these Daimlers is preserved in the UK. Illustrated outside Douglas Railway Station.Leyland Titan PD1Isle of Man Road Services first double deck buses were Leyland Titan PD1s, introduced in 1946. The first of these had to operate with some of the upper deck seats out of use due to regulations in force at the time. The regulations were quickly amended to permit the use of all seats and more PD1s soon followed. Though several of the PD1s found other uses for a time following withdrawal from service, all were ultimately scrapped.Illustrated outside Ramsey Town Hall.AEC Regent IBetween 1933 and 1939 Douglas Corporation Tramways (or Douglas Corporation Transport as it later became) acquired no fewer than ten AEC Regent I double-deckers, the last of which remained in service until 1967. One of these Regent Is is in private ownership, stored and awaiting restoration, on the Isle of Man.Illustrated on Prospect Hill, Douglas.

The Manx Christmas Prayer Book Issue date 23.10.15

The Isle of Man Post Office is very pleased to present this sparkling set of six stamps to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the first prayer book published in Manx. Local artist Julia Ashby-Smyth has focussed on a selection of Manx words and religious emblems most closely associated with the spiritual aspects of Christmas and winter festival.

Bryan Kneale RA Issue date 01.10.15 Now in his mid-eighties, Manxman Bryan Kneale is an elder-statesman of British art. His influence on the development of modern sculpture, after over thirty years teaching at the highest level and as an exhibiting and curating member of the Royal Academy, is legendary. In 1966 he became the first sculptor of abstract work to be elected to the Academy and his work is held in major museums and galleries worldwide. Although his commissioned work is sited as far afield as New Zealand and New York he is well represented on the Isle of Man and our set of ten stamps surveys the range and diversity of his five decades of artistic practice.

150th Anniversary of the Companies Act Issue date 28.09.15 A set of six stamps exploring the beginnings of the oldest continuous trading companies on the Isle of Man and 150 years of the Companies Registry, responsible for the incorporation of all companies on the Island.
