Our boot-shaped barrier island on South Carolina’s coast not only boasts gorgeous views, great breezes and fresh seafood, but also 12 miles of balmy beaches, over 50 miles of beckoning bike paths and an abundance of water activities, serene shops, bountiful boutiques, world-class golf courses and exquisite eateries.

This year, be sure to grab a bike, get out on a kayak, stand up paddleboard, canoe, catamaran or wave runner and enjoy Broad or Jarvis Creeks, the lagoons at Palmetto Dunes or the lakes in Sea Pines. Go to Shelter Cove Harbour and Towne Centre, South Beach, Harbour Town or Coligny and find all kinds of fun activities out on the water, as well as an assortment of restau-rants and shops. Each location offers up their own kid-friendly, open-air eateries with a variety of food, as well as several shops with beachwear and souvenirs to take home.

June is one of the most exciting months with assorted activities and special events going on every evening. HarbourFest returns to Shelter Cove Harbour and Summer Jams kicks off in the Shelter Cove Community Park. From outdoor concerts, fireworks and festi-vals, there is bound to be something to please everyone. Be sure to check out our Calendar of Events to find out what you want to do this month!

In this issue of Island Events, Jessie Renew gives us the insight on the best ways to discover the creeks with dad, while Captain Miles Altman reveals the “reel” sport on the Island—fishing! But it’s not all about the water in this issue. Kathleen McMenamin tells us a lit-tle bit about the marsh wrens, Doug Weaver lets us know about some golf activities at Palmetto Dunes and Georgene Mortimer explains how music and wine pair perfectly.

We hope all of our listings are helpful in guiding you to some of the very best that the Island has to offer. As always, the best is just a click away at hiltonhead.com, hiltonheadisland.com, bluffton.com, savannah.com, stsimonsisland.com and beaufort.com. All of our websites are accessible via smartphone, so you can find the best shops, restaurants and activities no matter where you are, and all of our priceless publications can be viewed on our new app, Hilton Head Visitor Guides!

an background music affect the taste of wine? The latest research says yes!

A growing body of scientific evidence shows that what people taste when evaluating a wine can be influenced by the music that happens to be playing at the same time.

It has long been known that what we hear can influence aspects of tasting. This is because out of all of our sensory organs, the tongue is the “dumbest,” meaning that all of our other senses (hearing, smell and sight) are more acute and strongly influence taste. When we eat a meal on a fancy place, full of elaborate place settings, fine porcelain, served by waiters wearing tuxe-dos with soft classical music playing, the food is going to taste different than if we ate the same food in a diner blaring pop music.

The latest research now shows that by playing the “right” music, one can also impact specific sensory-discriminative aspects of tasting, as well. Simply put, music influences the perceived acidity, sweetness, fruitiness and astringency in a wine.

In the latest study, Professor Adrian C. North of Edinburgh, Scotland gave taste tests to 250 students while playing music in the background.

Students were put into groups and given either a red wine or a white wine. Each group listened to one of four songs. The four songs were characterized as follows: powerful and heavy,

subtle and refined, mellow and soft or zingy and refreshing.

The results showed that the music had a consistent effect on the participants’ perception of the wine.

They tended to think their wine had the qualities of the music they were listening to. So, for example, both the red and white wines were given the highest ratings for being powerful and heavy by those participants who drank them to the powerful and heavy tune.

Californian winemaker and wine consultant Clark Smith set up his own studies involving over 150 wines and 250 songs. He summarizes his conclusions as follows: “Red wines need either minor key or they need music that has negative emotion. They don’t like happy music. With expensive reds, don’t play music that makes you giggle. Pinots like sexy music. Cabernets like an-gry music. It’s very hard to find a piece of music that’s good for both Pinot and Cabernet.”

“Never play polkas with anything,” he says, unless you really like White Zinfandel.

Open up a bottle, crank up the tunes and see if you agree.

The perfect bottle of handcrafted artisan wine awaits at Island Winery on Cardinal Road. Complimentary tastings, wine by the glass and cheese platters are available Monday-Saturday from 12:30-5:30 p.m. (843) 842-3141 or islandwinery.com.

The towering 12-foot bronze statue of Neptune, which doubles as a larger-than-life

sundial, serves as an iconic symbol of Shelter Cove Harbour at Palmetto Dunes, welcoming visitors to the entrance of the popular waterfront dining and shopping location.

Designed and installed by sculptor Wayne Edwards, this much-loved statue serves as a tribute to Neptune, the Roman god of the sea. The King Neptune statue, which depicts a bearded Neptune holding his signature trident, serves as a popular centerpiece at Shelter Cove Harbour. The statue is strate-gically mounted on a circular base with numbers around the edge.

When the trident’s shadow falls across the 26-foot wide base, the numbers indicate the pre cise time. Hailed as the world’s largest figu-rative sundi al, the statue was origi nally cast at a foundry in Princeton, New Jersey and shipped by truck to Hilton Head Island in 1983. Engineers made meticulous measure ments before the one-ton statue was installed, ensuring that it would be located at the ideal angle to indicate the time.

They oriented the sculpture towards true south by aligning the constella-tion Ursa Major with the North Star.

An official dedication for the statue was held at Shelter Cove Harbour on August 11, 1983, attracting residents and visitors alike. Today, the King Neptune statue delights gen erations of visitors to Shelter Cove Harbour, impressing adults and children of all ages. Stop by to see King Neptune in person and to expe rience a true Hilton Head Island icon.

Although mucky and smelly, the salt marsh is an important part of the Lowcountry.

In actuality, the salt marsh produces more food for the environment than rain forests. The green grass that dominates the marsh is called salt marsh cord grass or Spartina. When this cord grass dies each winter and decomposes, its nutrients are released into the marsh mud, creeks, streams and even into the ocean. These nutri ents begin the food chain for the entire Southeastern coastal area.

So, the next time you enjoy a meal of shrimp, mussels, oysters, blue crab, stone crab or saltwater fish, thank the muddy salt marshes.

1. GO TRANSLUCENT.Summer is the perfect opportunity to throw on your favorite translucent number. You can find these pieces easily this time of year because they double as cover-ups

at the beach. If yours feels too translucent, you can always throw on a light slip dress underneath. They are just as

comfy and may give you more confidence that you’re not baring it all. Birdie James has some amazing translucent dresses

by Le Soleil Miami, and they’re also carrying Yummie slip dresses, a chic line by RHONY alum, Heather Thomson!

2. BALANCE IS KEY.Make it look like you’re not trying too hard. Imagine yourself tossing your hair and saying, “What? This ole thang?” in your most playful voice. You can be polished and put together and still border on messy. I find that this is easiest for me when doing my hair. And I’ve been this

way since high school. It’s that low side bun that took me almost 30 minutes to strategically

work and rework, but man, it looks good. And best, I feel good.

3. BRING A BAG.Whether you’re wearing a lightweight romper or a long dress, an oversized tote is a must. Bring it to the beach, out shopping or on an excursion and everything you need will be tucked away in a trendy accessory. Not only will it complement your outfit, but it’s the perfect place to store those stylish sandals or that special outfit you might want to slip into later.

he large chunk of fresh-cut bait had scarcely touched bottom when the fish inhaled it and took off! As quick-

ly as I moved the drag to the strike setting, the hefty rod bent double and went under the boat.

“Big brown, big brown!” my brother Don hol-lered, as the fish took to the air behind me. I could hear the large splash but was too busy bent over the side with the rod in the water try-ing to keep old big brown from rubbing the line against the hull and breaking off.

Don tilted the engine as I worked the fish back to my side of the boat and, after a few tense minutes of seesaw action between the line and the transducer, she was free once more.

As I handed the rod to my son Caleb, the fish broke water again.

The fish surged, taking line freely and I held on to 10-year-old Caleb. It weighed at least as half much as my son, who groaned because of the strong pull of the fish. Slowly we worked the cobia back to the boat after 10 minutes of back and forth, but when the fish saw the boat, the line peeled off the reel again, despite Caleb’s protests.

Cobia are large battlers that move into our sounds to spawn in May and June. Averaging between 15 to 85 pounds, these fish offer the inshore angler reel sport! Usually by mid-June, they dwindle in size and the new spawn sport-ing racing stripes are well under the minimum 36-inch size.

I assured Caleb the fish had plenty of battle left. And he did, raging on for another 20 minutes. Each time Caleb worked him close to Don’s waiting gaff, the fish would take off on another spirited run. Finally, much to Caleb’s relief, Don planted the gaff securely in the cobia’s chin and the fish was in the boat. It weighed over 40 pounds, a nice first cobia catch for Caleb.

While the cobia action wanes by mid-June, there are many other exciting species to be caught now. Near offshore on the reefs and in the creeks, the sheepshead are biting.

Also biting are Spanish mackerel and bluefish off the sandbars close to the beach. The action is usually fast and furious when you encounter school fish. In the same areas, large jack creval-le can be found, along with an occasional bull redfish.

Patrolling the bait and Spanish mackerel schools, you never know when the big brother of the Spanish, the king mackerel, may be lurk-ing. Weighing between 15 and 60 pounds, this royalty puts up an exciting battle.

Last, but hardly least, the real June crowd pleasers, especially with the younger generation, are the sharks. We have many species of sharks here: bulls, blacktips, duskies, scalloped or bon-net heads, sand, reef, sharp nose and more.

Most of these sharks will be in the four- to five-foot range, but there are larger ones to be had. Charters are available to go offshore for the massive tiger sharks, often 12 feet or larger! The smaller ones can be caught on short trips and offer lots of regular action, a priority for younger anglers. Sharks make for great vacation memo-ries and, most of all, the kids love them!

Believe it or not, at one time it was rare to see an alligator. They were an endan gered species, hunted almost to the point of extinction. Many were

killed for their leather to make shoes and purses, or for their meat, or just because people were afraid of them.Today we can see alli gators pretty easily since they are now protec t ed by the Endangered Species Act. If you ever see an alligator, leave it alone.

Don’t try to make it move or “do some thing” by throw ing sticks or other things at it.

Alligators can move really fast. In fact, they can outrun any human over a short distance. There is a myth that if an alligator chases you, run in zig-zags. This isn’t true. They can turn in different direc tions just fine.

Another VERY important rule to remember about alligators is don’t feed them. This is so impor tant that it’s against the law to feed alligators.

Normally alligators don’t want to be around people. But, when someone feeds them, the ‘gators learn that where there are people, there is food.

So, when you see alli gators around the Low country, admire them from a distance.

L owcountry marshes are vibrant places in spring and summer. The beautiful bubbly song of the Marsh Wren adds to the

majestic nature of our environment. Keep an eye—and an ear—out for these abundant small marsh birds.

Marsh Wrens, Cistothorus palustris, are small brown-and-yellow birds with thin bills, a dark cap and white eye lines that tend to hold their tails upright, much like the common Carolina Wren. Weighing up to .5 ounces and growing up to five inches long, they make short flights throughout our Lowcountry marshes, but are more commonly seen jumping through the grass tips, as they maintain their territory and care for their young.

Spread throughout most of North America, Marsh Wrens are usually found in freshwater, saltwater and brackish marshes. Considered migratory throughout the majority of the United States, they can be found in our area year round. Marsh wrens are most notable from March to August due to their high frequency of vocaliza-tions, which coincides with their breeding sea-son. Although still in our area during the fall and winter months, they are much less noticeable.

These small birds are very active foragers. Their main diet consists of insects of all kinds, includ-ing larvae, spiders and snails. They forage in dense growths of spartina grass (marsh grass) for insects that cling to the stalks and also catch prey in the air with short, fast flights over the surface of the water.

At the beginning of the breeding season, a male declares his territory through song. He then continues to defend his territory by singing at rival males. To lower the competition, males poke holes in the eggs of other wrens, as well

as other varietal bird species. Within his territo-ry, a male may build up to 20 different nests—oval shaped baskets made out of dead wet grasses woven into the stops of the marsh grass. These nests usually have a side door entrance for camouflage and efficiency. Very few of the nests will be used to rear young, but often stand as decoys for predators or used by adults during non-nesting seasons.

A male wren sings to entice females into his ter-ritory. Marsh Wrens are not monogamous and may have two or more partners at a time. Upon a female’s arrival, the male will show her each of the nests within his range. A female chooses a male after accessing his territory, nests and the competition of other females. She then selects her favorite nest and lines it with grass, plant down and feathers.

After laying four to five brown-speckled eggs, the female incubates the eggs for up to 16 days. Once hatched, both parents forage to feed the young. After another 16 days, the newly hatched chicks leave the nest. A single female will have up to two broods a year.

Marsh Wren numbers have been increasing since 1966. They are considered a species of little concern, other than within the state of Michigan. They can be highly affected by habi-tat destruction due to pollution or construction. Maintaining marsh habitats is vital for their sur-vival and these birds will happily inhabit restored wetlands.

If your family already knows how to SUP, then consider a paddle board nature tour with a local guide. Not only can they offer you great insight into the sights, sounds and smells of our local waterways; they can also offer tips, techniques and activities to up your paddle boarding game.

Fishing is a timeless favorite for dads everywhere and our area is a mecca for the sport. Fishing charters, offered every day at several locations, usually take a total of six passengers out in near-shore and inshore waterways for four to eight hours. Your charter captain will provide all of the gear and expertise for a stress-free outing.

You can also get dad out fishing on a kayak fish-ing trip, which will be conducted in an inland marsh. Kayak fishing guides will teach you and Dad specific techniques for targeting local red-fish. These trips are conducted on pedal-driven kayaks and most suitable for groups with children over age 13.

For nature-loving dads, a kayak tour of local marshes is a perfect choice. Depending on your experience level, you can hire a guide or rent kayaks and go out on your own. Kayaking is great for every member of your family because it is relatively easy, conducted at a relaxed pace and totally safe. Children love kayaking, either paddling themselves or in the front of a two-seater with an adult. Out on the water, you will see beautiful views, a great variety of birdlife and, if you are lucky, Bottlenose Dolphin.

Once you have decided on the perfect Father’s Day family activity, be sure and prepare your group for a good experience. Sun protection is non-negotiable and should include sunscreen, hats, sunglasses and lip balm with SPF. Often that still is not enough to weather hours in the sun; for that, you need a physical barrier and will want to pack a set of lightweight long pants and shirt with UPF or sun protection.

Carry everyone’s favorite drinks and snacks, along with extra drinking water, in small soft cool-ers that can fit into boat hatches or be strapped to a board. Often a big challenge in doing these activities is simply keeping the crew hydrated and happy.

Make this Father’s Day one to remember by enjoying a family activity outside!

RULES FOR THE ROAD:Please obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws.

Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedes trians and other users.

Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles.

Please do not ride on roads where a pathway is available.

Please ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists.

WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you.

Please yield to pedestrians. When resting or stopped, please move off the pathway.

Most sections of the pathways are not illuminated. If you must bike at night, please wear light-colored clothing or carry a flash light. Bicycles must have a red rear reflector and a headlight when biking at night.

When approaching slower pathway users from behind, please sound your warning device, or call out, “Passing on your left.” Always pass on the left.

Bicyclists should always wear a helmet, especially children 12 and under.
