Italy? Do you want people toknow how sophisticated you are byknowing the difference between aBurgundy and Bordeaux? Do youneed to purchase an expensiveFrench wine to impress your datewith your worldliness?

None of these “whys” are better rea-sons than others. Understandingwhy you love (or hate) a wine deter-mines your entire wine experience.Gulping down a glass of inexpensivewine after a hard day at the office

can have the same salubrious effect as sipping a1956 Sautern with good friends. Sometimes yourpalate and your purse are linked, with an expen-sive wine always tasting better to you than thecheaper one. Why we love wine is at the core ofour experience.

Taking a pause to think about “why” is the veryessence of the wine experience. It reminds us thatthere is more to wine drinking than taste and smell.Knowing the reason you love a particular wineinvites stimulating conversation with great friends,if that is your pleasure.

Knowing “why” makes that chilled PeachChardonnay on the beach an indispensible ele-ment to your Hilton Head vacation. The sensorywine experience is utterly meaningless withoutthe passion that accompanies it. Why do you lovewine? Why aren’t you loving it now?

The perfect bottle of wine awaits at IslandWinery on Cardinal Road. Store and tastinghours are Monday-Saturday from 12:30 p.m.to 5:30 p.m. Wine Flights and Cheese areavailable from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. AWine & Cheese Happy Hour is offeredMonday-Thursday starting at 4 p.m. (843)842-3141 or islandwinery.com.

Wine TastingBy Georgene Mortimer, Island Winery

The next time you taste a wine, tryto unlearn all of the things youwere taught about wine tasting.Forget about honing yourWords with Friends© skills byrecalling elaborate phrases todescribe a wine’s bouquet.

Simply stick your face in yourglass and inhale deeply, butdon’t worry about coming up with a phraseto describe the experience. Just go with it.

The secret to being a great wine taster isn’tabout what you know, who you’ve learnedit from, how you swish your glass, or whereyou drink your wine. What separates the winelover from the occasional wine drinker isthat wine aficionados know why they’reenjoying a wine.

Wine lovers approach their passion with asense of purpose. They often have a senseof adventure, scouring the countryside andthe wine racks for the best kept secrets ofthe wine world. For them, it’s the thrill ofthe chase and the chance to make a greatdiscovery that animates their passion forwine tasting. Wine lovers who also lovelife don’t need an excuse to indulge in aglass of wine. Their sense of purpose (andresponsibility) dictates where and whenthey partake in the nectar of the vine.

The next time you taste a wine or purchasea bottle of red or white, think about whyyou’re drinking it. What drew you to thatvarietal? Was it your sense of adventure?Did you want to get a taste of Spain or

The Art of the Deal

... opportunity has created one of the best buyer’smarkets...

A number of years ago, Donald Trump wrotea book entitled The Art of the Deal. In thebook, Trump offers an inside look at aspectsof financing, construction and developmentin big-time New York real estate.

While we may not all have aspirations as adeveloper or care to manage a vast real estateempire, I think most people are interested ingetting a great deal. If you’re looking to nego-tiate a great deal, look no further than HiltonHead Island real estate.

Why Hilton Head Island?Well, for one thing just take a look aroundyou. Our 12 miles of sandy beaches, moder-ate climate, abundant wildlife and in-harmony-with-nature architecture truly make Hilton HeadIsland a special place. The relaxed lifestyle andclose proximity to larger cities like Charlestonand Savannah make Hilton Head and thesurrounding Lowcountry the perfect destina-tion. In addition, as other areas just get moreand more commercial, Hilton Head Islandwill always retain its natural charm thanks toregulations put in place years ago.

Short Sales vs. ForeclosuresBoth short sales and foreclosures present anopportunity to purchase a property significant-ly under market value. The trick is getting youroffer accepted in a timely manner. This is whereforeclosure properties have the edge over shortsales. Unlike a short sale – where you first have

to get the seller to accept your offer followedby lender approval – a foreclosure puts youdirectly in contact with a decision maker.

Short sales and foreclosures are worth a seri-ous look, but keep in mind that the best buysmay not be distressed properties. Many times, the best deals are the ones where sellers stillhave equity in the property and are willing tonegotiate based on property condition, incen-tives and price.

Why Now?Whether you’re looking for a primary residence,a second home or an investment property, nowis your chance! The market is strongly in favorof the buyer thanks to high inventory, compet-itive pricing, historically low interest rates andour fair share of short sales and foreclosures. This perfect storm of opportunity has createdone of the best buyer's markets we have everseen in this area.

You can always find a reason to put off makinga decision, but if you’ve fallen in love with theIsland as I have and want to create more last-ing memories here, then don’t hesitate becausethere may never be another perfect storm ofopportunity.

Contact Carey North at Palmetto SandsRealty to negotiate your perfect realestate deal. (843) 384-6402 orCareyNorth.com.

Horoscope July 2012

ARIES An interesting person of the oppo-site sex may shock you out of a year’s growth

by making a frank suggestion concerning yourlove life. This could be flattering, but the attraction– even if mutual – is not likely to be lasting. Acci-dents are in the air and you would be well advisedto postpone any lengthy trips until a later date.Children could become a larger feature in your life.

TAURUS The signs are excellent nowfor you to enter upon a new venture, par-

ticularly one of a personal nature. A friend fromthe past could come to your aid quite unexpect-edly and this could mean a financial windfall toyou. Poor judgement of character could be expen-sive and all investments should be double-checkedbefore the check is signed. Spend some time inpersonal contemplation.

GEMINI Don’t let others get the upperhand through shyness or personal laziness.

Make sure you have the ear of an important personwho can say yes or no with both speed and author-ity. Love matters are in a flux now and you shouldavoid any long-range commitments. This does notrule out pleasant interludes of a casual nature, buteven these should be examined for pitfalls.

CANCER Get out of that rut and becomethe catalyst of action rather than the recip-

ient. You should spend some time now gettingyour personal and business life in a more orderlystate. Opportunity for a sudden move or changein your occupational area could come, but youmay need to move with alacrity. Whisperedsweet nothings could come back to haunt you.

LEO A chance meeting with an old acquain-tance could lead to a possible change in

careers, or at least the offer of a better-payingjob. You could also re-kindle a long-dormantromantic situation by being in the right place atthe right time. Problems of a domestic naturecan be avoided by making sure that you are com-pletely open and honest in all your dealings witha mate or loved one. Don’t wait on a phone call.

VIRGO A pretended friend may be work-ing against you in either a love situation or

in your career. Be cautious that you give them noammunition which could be used against you, either now or later. A friend in need of gainfulemployment would appreciate some help rightnow and this could prove extremely valuable toyou at a later time.

LIBRA Problems involving transportationcould arise suddenly and this might prove

dangerous for some. Discreet behavior at this timeis a must and any neglect of this warning could bedisastrous, for many eyes are following you now.Be mannerly to superiors, but do not allow yourselfto be shouted down if you know your answers arecapable of solving a dilemma.

SCORPIO An influential and highly suc-cessful person of mature years could

develop an interest in your welfare. Care shouldbe taken, however, to avoid the appearance ofhumoring this person – or even catering to hiswishes – as a certain amount of independenceand integrity is what this person is seeking. Oldloves may prove to be the best, if you are forcedto make a choice.

SAGITTARIUS Care should be takennow to avoid a misunderstanding with a

romantic Gemini. A very casual feeling on yourpart could be mistaken for a serious commitmentand could cause no end of trouble between youand another. Take time to plan a trip which willhelp get you away from the hurly-burly and into abetter frame of mind.

CAPRICORN Venus figures strongly inyour activities and could bring about a

meeting between you and a highly attractivePisces. This should be avoided if you are alreadycommitted to a situation you desire to maintain.Water in all forms, as a means of travel, shouldbe avoided now. Gains made by unethical meanswill not be long lasting.

AQUARIUS You could be in for a busysocial life in the immediate future, causing

you to call on physical reserves you were notaware you owned. Be cautious in financial deal-ings with a pleasant and plausible stranger untilyou check everything out in detail. A businesstrip could prove disastrous unless you make surethat all minor details are handled with care.Growing pains may cause you to ache a little.

PISCES An excellent move for you nowwould be to go ahead full force on that

long-delayed business idea. You will never have abetter chance of carrying it to fruition, as yourpowers of persuasion are nearing a peak. A visitto old haunts may cause you to reconsider aserious romantic decision. A telephone call thatcomes a bit late could be very helpful.

“I’ll be on Hilton Head next week and would liketo charter you to do a little fishing,” said my oldfriend Doyle Evans in his thick Oklahoma drawl.Doyle and I had become friends years before, but we had never pulled off a fishing triptogether.

“How ‘bout some fast action, big fish on lighttackle?” I asked.

“Let's do it,” Doyle replied.

The next day, we departed on a beautiful morn-ing. Sunshine and calm seas lay before us as weheaded for a nearshore reef. We made a quickstop to throw the cast net on some menhaden, filled the live bait and resumed skimming acrossa glassy ocean with a gentle swell.

One of summer's top targets for the Hilton Headcharter fishing fleet and recreational anglers alikeis the Spanish mackerel. These roaming maraud-ers of the local waters are sleek, streamlinedpredators that forage on the bait schools aroundthe sandbars and reefs. Beautiful fish, they havean olive green back that fades to iridescent silversides with round golden spots that run along thebody. Like all mackerel, the Spanish mackerel hasa forked tail that screams speed and is armed witha mouth full of teeth, making it a remarkablyefficient predator.

That’s why we were using light wire leaders onour rigs that day. Traditionally, Spanish are caughttrolling, usually with a long leader and a smallspoon such as the Clarkspoon, some weight ora small planer in front of the leader.

Flocks of seagulls and terns diving on thebaitfish – or the results of the carnage ofthe mackerel school beneath them –make locating the Spanish mackerel

easier. The spoons are usually trolled around thefringe of the school as not to spook them, buttoday we were doing it different.

We dropped the anchor alongside the reef anddeployed the chum bag. The water was clearand the bait schools were soon evident behindthe boat as they came to the chum bag. I put alive menhaden on a small treble that had another“stinger” treble a few inches behind it. Doyledropped it 10 feet behind the boat and the showstarted!

A half dozen Spanish mackerel blitzed the liveyand the light Shakespeare Ugly Stik 12-poundrod bent double as the drag sang on the reel. After several scorching runs, a nice five-poundSpanish mackerel hit the deck. Doyle grinned.“Like fishing in an aquarium,” he remarked.

And it was. We repeated this scenario over andover, sometimes dropping the bait right besidethe boat, the high speed Spanish mackerel comingfrom every direction to attack the hapless bait.

It was a remarkable day… with a wonderful friendand now a great memory. But it’s July and thetime is now. Get out on the water, cast a lineand seize the day!

American Indians were the first people to inhabitHilton Head Island. With no written history, weare left to speculate about the lifestyle and habitsof these indigenous people.

We have learned about their culture throughfound artifacts and structures they left behind. The greatest physical evidence of these people isan Indian shell ring located in the Sea PinesForest Preserve.

Nomadic Indians lived in South Carolina between8,000 and 1,000 B.C. They were hunter-gathererswho came to the coast to harvest shellfish, crabs, fish, snails and turtles. The freshwater wetlandsof Hilton Head Island offered potable water, foodand living space for these continental wanderers. The Indian Shell Ring in the Sea Pines ForestPreserve was constructed over 3,800 years ago, around the same time the Great Pyramids werebeing built in Egypt.

One of only 20 shell rings that still exist alongthe east coast of the United States, this historictreasure is listed on the National Register ofHistorical Sites. Experts believe the shell ring wasconstructed to serve as a place for sacred cere-monies and feasts. The ring is made of piled shelland animal bones. The most common shellsfound here in the Lowcountry are oyster, clamand mussel shells.

The ring was built in stages using rudimentarymasonry. Anthropologists believe that the ringbegan as a circular shape of small mounds. The mounds began at 7 or 8 feet in diameter.Progressively, shells were added into the gaps andthen smoothed over by layers of crushed shelland soil. The shell ring is currently 140 feet indiameter. The base of the ring, which lies under-ground, is 25 feet wide. Today, the ring extendsabout 15 inches out of the ground.

Pottery, tools and spear points were found in thearea, which allowed archeologists to determinethe approximate date of the ring. It is thought that

the nomadic Indians who built the ring aban-doned it about 3,500 years ago. It is unclearwhy these people left the area, althoughthe potentially rising sea level may haveaffected their shellfish harvesting. Growingpopulations along the coast may have alsoforced these Native Americans out of thearea. They may have also changed their sus-tainable livelihood, turning to agriculture andhunting as opposed to marine harvesting.

The Cusabo were the latest known tribes to livealong the Lowcountry coast, from Charleston downto Savannah. The Cusabo included nine differenttribes that lived in the coastal plains of SouthCarolina: Ashepoo, Combahee, Coosa, Edisto,Escamacu, Kiawah, Stono, Wando and Wimbee.Prior to settlers coming into the area, these tribeswere already losing population due to otheraggressive tribes trying to take over their land.

With the introduction of the Charlestown Landingsettlement, disease, land clashes and trade con-flicts continued to decimate their population. For50 years, there were power struggles over landand trade between the Indians and the new set-tlers. Overtaking much of the Indian land, settlersgave the Cusabo tribe Palawana Island, locatednear St. Helena, as their own territory in 1712.By 1783, the Cusabo tribe had disappearedfrom this island. It is thought that some of theCusabo joined the Catawba tribe. Catawba cul-ture still exists today and is mainly found along theAppalachian range of Georgia, South Carolina,North Carolina, Tennessee and West Virginia.

To learn more about the Indian shell ring and theNative Americans who lived in the area, you canjoin H2O Sports on a walking exploration of thearea. The area is well maintained to preservethe historical value. The tour highlights the his-tory as well as the construction of the shell ring. While exploring the bordering wood, one canlearn about the medicinal and edible plants thathelped to nourish these nomadic people.

The H2O Nature Center, which features livereptile and amphibian exhibits and hands-ondisplays, focuses on the wildlife and habitatsof the South Carolina Lowcountry. Naturetours, apparel, gifts, books and bicycle/fish-ing gear rentals are also available. To reservea tour with Master Naturalist KathleenMcMenamin, call (843) 686-5323 or visitH2Osportsonline.com.

By Capt. Patte Ranney, S.C. Master Naturalist, Outside Hilton HeadA Broad Creek Feeding Frenzy

I happened upon a feeding frenzy whileexploring the Broad Creek recently. The tidewas low. Mudflats lining the shallow waterglistened in the sunlight. Mud snails andfiddler crabs scoured the surface of the mudfor algae and other tiny particles of food.

The tall, verdant grasses rose above the blue-gray oyster rakes. Above the blades, the skygleamed turquoise blue and was filled with pil-low-like cumulus clouds. A typical summer day.

I was drawn to a cut in the marsh, using apaddleboard to navigate the water. As the tideebbs, the water empties from the high marshinto the main body of the creek, and the pathof least resistance yields to the stream, creat-ing a deep cut. Back a bit from the water’sedge, a pool had formed. Small fish and shrimp, having sought refuge in the dense grasses athigh tide, were now isolated in this warm andmuddy place.

I was fascinated by the abundance of life inthis little pool. I’ve heard that a teaspoon ofsaltmarsh water contains nearly five millionorganisms. I believe it now.

Sitting motionless upon my paddleboard, Iheard the long low swooooo, swoooo of WoodStork wing beats as, one by one, the flock flewin. They’ve noticed this buffet as well.

A collection of some of the saltmarsh’s finestbirds congregated several feet from where Isat. So plentiful was the food and so intensethe feeding, none of the birds were disturbedby my presence. I love birds, and the oppor-tunity to observe them feeding for an extendedperiod of time is truly an awesome experience.

Each bird feeds a bit differently. The GreatBlue Heron and Great Egret stand as proudsentinels. As their prey approaches, both tendto cast their eye towards the water, slowlydrawing in their long necks, patiently wai-ting for the opportune moment to strike andcapture.

Another patient feeder is the Wood Stork.Fishing with its large black down-curved billslightly ajar, this large black and white birdsways its head side-to-side, back and forth, until its quarry swims through. So sensitive isthe bill, it can snap it shut around a piece offood more quickly than we can blink our eyes.

The smaller Snowy Egret is more frantic in itssearch for a meal, often jetting along the edgeof the water, stirring up small organisms withits bright yellow “slippers.” And then, of course, the dancer of the group, the tri-colored Heron, steals the show. Charging out from the groupinto the deepest part of this little pool, thisgraceful avian sometimes turns a full circle inchase of a small fish or shrimp.

Wildlife in the salt marsh always amazes me.Get Outside and observe the distinctive feed-ing behaviors of the Wood Stork, Egrets andHerons for yourself.

How to Control Distance on Pitch ShotsBy Doug Weaver, Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort

... keep your bodyrelaxed and your mindfocused on the goal...

One of the most frequent questionsgolfers ask me is how to control distanceon pitch shots. Fortunately, the answer tothat question is relatively simple.

There are four fundamental factors that deter-mine distance on pitch shots:

The length of the club. The longer the club, the further the ball goes, plain and simple. Usea longer club for long shots and a shorter clubfor short shots.

Grip position. If you grip high on the club, youhave a longer lever, which will provide a biggerswing. If you grip low on the club, you have ashorter lever, which results in a smaller swing.

Weight transfer. On small pitches, you cankeep your weight steady on your left foot, sinceyou won’t need to fuel your swing with toomuch power. On big pitches, transfer yourbody weight into your shot, moving yourweight from one foot to the other. That willgive your shot more force.

Back swing. Remember that the golf clubworks just like a pendulum. When you needmore power, you have to add a longer backswing. When you need less force, you canuse a shorter back swing.

So, for smaller shots, grip the club down low,put your weight on your left foot and use amodest backswing. For bigger shots, be sureto grip the club up high, widen your stance, use a long back swing and transfer your weight

into the shot for more power.

Golf often boils down to basic physics involv-ing force, mass and motion. However, onething is certain: by controlling the distancethe ball travels, you’ll be able to lower youroverall score and improve your golf game.

Try a quick pitching drill this month. Lay yourgolf bag on the ground four feet in front ofthe ball and pitch over it, making a divot.Experiment with different club lengths, grippositions, weight transfers and back swings.Be sure to keep your body relaxed and yourmind focused on the goal at hand as youfollow through on each swing.

As the temperature heats up this month onHilton Head Island, make sure you keep yourcool on the golf course. Stay hydrated, applysunscreen and wear a hat to shield your headfrom South Carolina’s hot summer sun.

Above all, use this month to refine your swingand have fun on the green. Play a round ortwo on Hilton Head Island, one of the world’sbest places to play golf. I’ll see you out onthe course!
