Savor Spring on Hilton Head!

Our boot-shaped barrier island on South Carolina’s coast not only boasts 12 miles of beautiful beaches, but also an abundance of wondrous water activities, serene shops, bountiful boutiques, world-class golf courses and excellent eateries.

Whether you’re in the mood to sit back and relax in a hammock at one of the many resorts on Hilton Head or get out and explore the island by bike, or the waters by boat, kayak or jet ski, we’re sure you’ll find several ways to make the most of your trip to the Lowcountry’s most beloved island.

As spring comes into full swing, the 48th RBC Heritage at Harbour Town Golf Links brings back some of the world’s best golfers in their tournament April 11–17. Be sure to break out your best plaid, because this internationally televised PGA Tour event, which has been a tradi-tion in Sea Pines since 1969, is known for its distinctive tartan jacket. If you’re planning on attending, be sure to check out our article about how to incorporate this fun trend into your outfit.

But that isn’t the only fun this spring! Gregg Russell concerts return to Harbour Town, Music & Taste is back at Shelter Cove Harbour, and the 16th Annual Art Market at Historic Honey Horn returns April 30-May 1.

In this issue of Island Events, Doug Weaver shares golf etiquette with new players, while Jessie Renew reveals the best ways to kayak the May River. Also in this issue, Captain Miles Altman shares a first hand account of battling big bull reds, Kathleen McMenamin explores the decrease of longleaf pines in our forests, and Georgene Mortimer of Island Winery, which was just named South Carolina’s Winery Worth Traveling For by FlipKey, reveals some of the lesser known wine regions in the world.

We hope all of our listings are helpful in guiding you to some of the very best that the island has to offer. As always, the best of the Lowcountry and the Coastal Empire are just a click away at hiltonhead.com, hiltonheadisland.com, bluffton.com, savannah.com, stsimonsisland.com and beaufort.com. All of our websites are accessible via smart-phone, so you can find the best shops, restaurants and activities no matter where you are, and all of our priceless publications can be viewed on our new app, Hilton Head Visitor Guides!

Lesser-Known Wine Regions

F rance, California, and Italy might be the most popular wine regions of the world, but what about the underdogs? Discover what wines

await in these lesser-known wine regions:

MoroccoMorocco’s population is 98 percent Muslim, so one would not expect that it sustains an entire wine region with a long history of wine production. The Meknès region in Morocco was originally cultivated over 2,500 years ago by the Carthaginians. The conquering Romans continued to use the vineyards after their arrival. When the North African grape variety was wiped out from disease in the 19th century, the French replanted with their own grapes while in control of the region in the 20th century.

The high Atlas Mountains and the cooling waves of the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea offset the damaging Moroccan heat to provide the conditions for grape growing. About 75 per-cent of the grapes are red grapes predominately Carignan, Cinsault, Alicante and Grenache.

IsraelIsrael’s winemaking history goes back to biblical times when, according to Genesis, “Noah was the first tiller of the soil. He planted a vineyard; and he drank of the wine.” However, during centuries of Islamic rule, alcohol production was banned as part of the Islamic dietary laws. An-cient Israeli vineyards were uprooted along with any indigenous grapes. Today, the wine industry produces primarily French grapes imported during the late 19th century when Baron Edmund de Rothschild, owner of Chateau Lafite-Rothschild, sent grapes from France to Israel to help settlers begin making wine.

Today, Israel has a thriving wine market, especially in the region of Galilee. Galilee is the region most suited for viticulture with its unique microclimate of high elevation, cool breezes, marked day and night temperature changes,

and rich, well-drained soils. Utilizing advanced winemaking technologies, Israel joins California and France as a leader in research and experi-mentation in grape growing and wine production techniques.

The most widely planted varieties include Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot and Sauvignon.

SloveniaSlovenia’s winemaking industry has a long and tumultuous history dating back to the early Celtic tribes, who began cultivating vines between the fourth and fifth centuries. By the Middle Ages the Christian Church controlled most of the region’s wine production. The wine industry continued through the rule of the Hapsburgs, but declined following the fall of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. From the Second World War through the Yugo-slav wars, the wine industry continued to decline in both quantity and quality. However, the regions close ties to the West allowed the industry to bounce back quickly.

In the western region of Primorska, where the country abuts the northeast Italian wine region of Friuli-Venezia, the vines seamlessly transition across the border into the Slovenia Brda region. This area is best known for its white wines, es-pecially Rebula white wines. Further south on the Istrian peninsula along the Adriatic, the warmest wine regions yield highly acidic red wines pro-duced from the Refosco grapes. Only 10 percent of Slovenia’s 26.4 million gallons of wine a year are exported out of the country, which means a lot of the wine production here goes almost completely unnoticed by the international wine community.

The perfect bottle of wine awaits at Island Winery on Cardinal Road. Store and tast ing hours are Monday through Saturday from 12:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Purchase three bottles of wine and receive a complimentary cheese platter. (843) 842-3141 or islandwinery.com.

The towering 12-foot bronze statue of Neptune, which doubles as a larger-than-life

sundial, serves as an iconic symbol of Shelter Cove Harbour at Palmetto Dunes, welcoming visitors to the entrance of the popular waterfront dining and shopping location.

Designed and installed by sculptor Wayne Edwards, this much-loved statue serves as a tribute to Neptune, the Roman god of the sea. The King Neptune statue, which depicts a bearded Neptune holding his signature trident, serves as a popular centerpiece at Shelter Cove Harbour. The statue is strate-gically mounted on a circular base with numbers around the edge.

When the trident’s shadow falls across the 26-foot wide base, the numbers indicate the pre cise time. Hailed as the world’s largest figu-rative sundi al, the statue was origi nally cast at a foundry in Princeton, New Jersey and shipped by truck to Hilton Head Island in 1983. Engineers made meticulous measure ments before the one-ton statue was installed, ensuring that it would be located at the ideal angle to indicate the time.

They oriented the sculpture towards true south by aligning the constella-tion Ursa Major with the North Star.

An official dedication for the statue was held at Shelter Cove Harbour on August 11, 1983, attracting residents and visitors alike. Today, the King Neptune statue delights gen erations of visitors to Shelter Cove Harbour, impressing adults and children of all ages. Stop by to see King Neptune in person and to expe rience a true Hilton Head Island icon.

Harbour Town Lighthouse

Rising 93 feet above the Calibogue Sound and framing the 18th hole of the Harbour Town Golf Links...

The Harbour Town Lighthouse, which was com-pleted in 1970, was the first privately-financed lighthouse built since the early 1800s.

Nicknamed “Fraser’s Folly,“ Charles Fraser, the visionary developer of The Sea Pines Resort, believed a distinctive landmark, along with a pro fessional golf tournament, would arouse interest in the fledgling seaside community.

As usual, Fraser was right, and today the candy-striped, hexagonal structure has become synonymous with Hilton Head Island.

Rising 93 feet above the Calibogue Sound and framing the 18th hole of the Harbour Town Golf Links, the red-and-white striped lighthouse guides golfers off the tee. The back drop for one of golf’s most picturesque fin ish ing holes, #18 was once part of the $1 million Kodak Challenge, a cele bra tion of “the beautiful holes and mem orable moments in golf.”

Panoramic views of the Harbour Town Yacht Basin and Golf Links, the Liberty Oak, the Calibogue Sound and Daufuskie Island, are just one reason to climb the 114 stairs to the top of the lighthouse. Along the way, the Harbour Town Lighthouse Museum offers a

self-guided “climb through time” with displays and artifacts showcas ing vari-ous stages of Hilton Head history.

Offering a unique, “elevated” shopping experience, The Top of the Lighthouse Shop fea tures over 2,000 items, including Crystal World light house figurines, Harbour Lights collectibles, Christmas orna ments, Annaleece high quality fashion jewelry, Trollbeads and local art and photography.

While enjoying the view, wave to family and friends via the webcam or visit harbourtownlighthouse.com to zoom in on the yacht basin, the 18th hole of the Harbour Town Golf Links or the Liberty Oak, where family favorite Gregg Russell has entertained generations of visitors for more than three decades during the summer.

The Island’s best-known land mark is also avail-able for special events, including mem o rable weddings, intimate parties and corporate functions. Call for details and reservations.

The Harbour Town Lighthouse is open 7 days a week from 10 a.m.-Sundown. Admission is $4 per person, free for ages 5 and under. Accommo dat ing up to 40 people, the lighthouse may also be re served for private parties and func tions. (843) 671-2810, (866) 305-9814 orharbourtownlighthouse.com.

The RBC Heritage, South Carolina’s only PGA TOUR event, returns April 11-17 to the Harbour Town Golf Links in The Sea Pines Resort with not only incredible players, but a relaxed ambiance, playful atmosphere and plaid, that everyone (and their mother) seems to be wearing.

As far as traditions go, wearing plaid to the RBC Heritage is definitely one to not pass up. Each year, the champion is pre-sented with their very own tartan jacket, but the tradition has transformed to be much more than that. The whole Heritage com-munity has been dubbed Plaid Nation and everyone’s finding all kinds of creative ways to incorporate this eye-catching pattern into their ensembles. Now it’s your turn to get your plaid on. Try these twists on the tartan tradition to give your outfit some fun flair:

Bow BlingIf you want to show your spirit and still keep your signature style, consider adding a bright plaid bow to your hair. Or you can don a bowtie if you want to dress

it up a little bit.

Standout ShirtsWhile plaid flannel shirts might be in style during the fall, the

spring is the time to lighten and brighten it up! Be bold and go all out with a light-weight, short-sleeved button-up.

Bottoms UpIf you’ve already picked out that perfect non-plaid polo and want something fun to pair with it; why not plaid pants, shorts or a skirt? Whether you pick light pastel pants or a bright and bold skirt, you’ll cer-tainly be the center of atten-tion wherever you go!

Fun on your FeetDid you even know tartan sneakers exist-ed? If you’re looking for a unique way to wear plaid this year, then your shoes might just be the way to go!

Hip with a HatLooking for something a little classier? Get your own beret or flat cap to pair with a sweat-er vest for that timeless look! Something more laid back? Then grab a baseball hat; they go great with almost any outfit.

Jammin’ JacketsSave the plaid tartan for the champion. Instead, head over to Plaid Nation’s headquarters at the tournament to get your own jacket or sweatshirt with the Heritage’s signature

touch of tartan.

The tradition continues April 11-17, when the 48th RBC Heritage returns to Hilton Head Island, uniting some of the world’s top golfers for a $5.9 million purse and the chance to don the distinctive tartan plaid blazer. The winner will walk away with more than $1 million and the coveted champion status at South Carolina’s only PGA TOUR event.

The 2016 RBC Heritage will kick off with the annual cannon firing on the Harbour Town Golf Links at Sea Pines, a legendary course originally designed by Pete Dye in consultation with Jack Nicklaus in 1969.

Originally the vision of late Sea Pines developer Charles Fraser, the inaugural Heritage Classic golf tournament teed off in 1969 as a way to establish Hilton Head Island as a household name. In its first year, Arnold Palmer clinched the title and $20,000 of the competition's $100,000 purse, and Hilton Head Island was well on its way to becoming a world-class resort destination. Over the past 40+ years, the tournament has grown from an innovative marketing strategy to one of the most beloved, most respected and most char itable stops on the PGA TOUR.

Since 1987, more than $28 million has been donated to charitable organizations to help people in need in South Carolina and Georgia. This year, more than 100,000 fans are expected to attend the RBC Heritage, with more than 60 million house-holds around the globe tuning in on The Golf

Channel, CBS Sports, Fox Sports Affiliates and XM Satellite Radio. The RBC Heritage is tra ditionally held the week following the Masters Golf Tournament and provides a warm, relaxed environment for players and their families to enjoy the best of Hilton Head Island.

Daily tickets and weeklong badges for this year’s tournament are currently on sale at rbcheritage.com or by calling the tournament office at (843) 671-2448.

DID YOU KNOW?Davis Love III is the tournament’s only five-time winner. Hale Irwin has won three times, while Johnny Miller, Hubert Green, Tom Watson, Fuzzy Zoeller, Payne Stewart, Stewart Cink and Boo Weekley have won two Heritage events.

Davis Love III holds the longest current streak of consecutive appearances at the RBC Heritage. The 2011 tournament marked his 26th start.

The oldest winner was Hale Irwin in 1994 at age 48. The youngest winner was Davis Love III in1987 at age 23.

The lowest score recorded by a Heritage winner was 264 by Brian Gay in 2009.

The RBC Heritage purse is eight times greater than it was in 1988 and this year’s purse is greater than the combined payouts for the tournament’s first 19 years.

Although mucky and smelly, the salt marsh is an important part of the Lowcountry. In actuality, the salt marsh produces more food for the environment than rain forests. The green grass that dominates the marsh is called salt marsh cord grass or Spartina. When this cord grass dies each winter and decomposes, its nutrients are released into the marsh mud, creeks, streams and even into the ocean. These nutri ents begin the food chain for the entire Southeastern coastal area. So, the next time you enjoy a meal of shrimp, mussels, oysters, blue crab, stone crab or saltwater fish, thank the muddy salt marshes.

Twenty-five feet below the surface, a marauding school of bull reds swept the sandy bottom in search of prey. Honing in on the smell of fresh-cut mullet, a large bull inhaled the chunk, and upon feeling the bite of the 8/0 circle hook, put its broad shoulders and tail into high gear. Above the surface on board the Phantom, a medium heavy-spinning rod bucked and then bent double as the reel drag started singing that song all anglers love to hear—the line disappearing off the spool at a high rate.

One of the bright spots in our local fisheries is the impressive comeback of the red drum. Years of tight restrictions on bag limits and increased mariculture efforts by the state have resulted in one of our most prolific fisheries. Known by many names—spot-tail bass, redfish (smaller ones) and bull reds (big-ger ones)—red drum offer some of the best sport fishing for Lowcountry anglers regardless of whether they are land bound or boaters. They get their name because male redfish produce drum-ming sounds using muscular contractions, which rub against their swim bladder, to attract females.

Bull reds make two strong runs a year: April and

usually September/October. During these times catching double-digit numbers of 20- to 40-pounders is not uncom-mon. An occasional bullcan be caught anytime ofthe year—the smaller onesare here all year long—butit’s nothing compared tothe spring and fall.

Shrimp, small crabs, and finger mullet are common forage for the redfish and therefore make excellent

bait. Several artificial lures work well when trying to catch redfish, including spoons, spinner baits and jigs. Spinning or baitcasting gear, 10- to 20-pound rating and a 1/0 to 4/0 hook will suffice for tackle.

On the Phantom, I like to use medium heavy spinning rods with 40-pound braid. I fish a fairly tight drag, letting the battle wear on with lighter stuff. This increases the recovery time and the mortality of the release fish. Multiple hookups are fairly common, creating a Chinese fire drill on board as anglers strive to keep the strong fish from tangling. It’s great fishing the big bull reds and the time is now.

Longleaf PinesBy Kathleen McMenamin, Master Naturalist

T hese large hardwood pine trees onceencompassed broad portions of the

Southern United States. Today they are hard to find, due to over harvesting and clearing for developments. Many people are working to reestablish populations and protect the many endangered and threatened species that rely on the long leaf pine forests for survival.

Longleaf pines, Pinus palustris, are large evergreen conifers. They have thick scaly bark that can reach up to three feet wide and needle shaped leaves, which are the longest of all the pines, reaching up to 18 inches long. Mature trees generally reach between 80 to 100 feet tall. The largest documented longleaf was 120 feet tall. Longleaf pines grow almost perfectly straight and natural-ly trim their own lower branches. They are most recognizable for their extremely large pine cones. Some longleaf pines found today are 250 years old. The oldest longleaf pine recorded was 450 years old.

Historically, longleaf pines were spread from southeast Virginia through Florida and west to Texas. They once occupied 90 million acres of the United States. Today, four million acres can be found in small patches through their historical range. Longleaf pines are highly adaptable to severe windstorms, able to resist pests and drought, as well as able to tolerate fire. They can be found in many different types of locations—from sea level to 2,300 feet elevation. They grow in poorly drained flatwoods all the way to rocky mountain ridges, although they prefer warm and wet cli-mates and sandy, dry, acidic soils. In areas where wildfires or regular burns are common, the long-leaf pine will dominate the forest.

There are many life stages for the longleaf pine. The first stage is the seed stage, which starts when

a pine cone drops to the for-est floor in the late fall. After about a year they enter into

the grass stage, when the cen-tral roots (known as taproot)

can grow up to 12 feet long. This phase will last one to seven years

before the bottle brush stage begins, in which they will grow a few feet in a quick

amount of time and resemble a four-foot-tall bot-tle brush. In sapling stage, when the longleaf pines are about six to 10 feet tall, they begin to form lat-eral branches, and will continue to grow about three feet per year. The mature stage takes place when the tree is 30 years old, cones, and fertile seeds begin to form.

Longleaf pines will generally stop growing once they have reached 100 years old. When they are between 80 and 90 years old, they develop a fungus called heart wood. This fungus causes the dense interior of the tree to become soft, sappy, and full of channels. It is very rare that longleaf pines end up dying of old age, since they live in areas where natural disasters tend to be the main cause of their death. The dead trunks are equally important to the eco system as when they are alive. Today there are over 30 species of organisms that are endangered or threatened and specifically rely on the longleaf pine habitat.

By 1920 most of the longleaf pine habitats had been cleared for development or agriculture. Their dense heart wood was lumbered and used as building materials for ships and railroads. Due to the great amount of time it took for them to reach maturity, foresters began planting faster growing pines instead. Fire suppression is another reason that longleaf pines were unable to sustain their large populations. Today many organizations are working to reestablish the longleaf pine forests of the United States. For more information on how you can help, go to longleafalliance.org.

T he mighty May River in Bluffton is one of my favorite bodies of water to kayak on. There are a lot of different things

to see including untouched marshy wilderness and beautiful old churches. The river’s rich history comprises a time as a Native American travel network, Civil War battle site, steamship port, favorite hunting ground and much more.

As always, before heading out by kayak, check the tides and weather. The May River can get very windy, very quickly, so check the wind speed. For tides visit saltwatertides.com and for weather, wunderground.com gives great wind information. There are several great spots to put in on the May River and great paddles from each of them. Here are some of my favorites:

Alljoy Landing to Downtown Bluffton and back, under the bridge. Leave at high tide from Alljoy Boat Landing, and hang a right. As you head down the river, you’ll come upon Potato Island to the left and Palmetto Bluff straight ahead. On the right is a peninsula, with a small creek dividing it, creating Myrtle Island. Go around Myrtle and past the scenic Palmetto Bluff docks to the left. As you turn the next corner, you will see Downtown Bluffton dead ahead. This part of the river has high bluffs, carved away by the water. Head for the big reddish church high on a bluff; this is the Church of the Cross, one of the oldest remaining structures in Bluffton. Once you arrive at the dock, you can lock your boat up and explore the town, or head up to the church lawn for a picnic. Return in the same direction, this time going on the creek through the Myrtle Island peninsula. There is a lot of great wildlife back there!

If you leave Alljoy Boat Landing, right at low tide and go right, you can paddle to “The May River Sandbar.” This popular boating destination turns

into one big beach picnic every weekend! Locals bring their kids, dogs, grills and beach toys out for long days of fun in the

sun. For kayakers, it’s a good spot to have a picnic and swim off of the sandbar while watching the tide come in.

For more of a nature paddle, the more inland portion of the May River offers fantastic paddling. Put in at the Calhoun Street Dock or Oyster Factory Park one hour before high tide and hang a slight right. Once you have passed most of the docks, head straight across to the far side of the river. As you cross, you will pass magnificent hammock islands in the river. These small marshy islands cling to eroding sediment with marsh grass, oaks, and palm trees. Once you reach the other side, keep the land on your left as you continue right up river. The property on the left is part of Palmetto Bluff, a scenic and historic community deep in Bluffton. You will see a few houses. About a half hour to an hour later, the river makes a sharp left turn, almost 90 degrees. As you approach this bend, the land on the right will end, giving way to sandy bottoms spotted with small islands. If you go on a good high tide, you can get back between these islands to a secluded sandy beach. Perfect for a picnic and stretch. Head back by paddling through to the far side of this sandy-mashy area and ride the tide back to the dock!

For the full experience of the May River, hire a local kayak guide! They can outfit you with the best equip-ment for the paddle and take you to all the highlights, while explaining the history and significance of the area. This April, get outside on the May River!

For more than 30 years, Outside Hilton Head has provided personalized adventures for all ages, from kayak, fishing, nature and dolphin tours to kids’ camps, history excursions, family outings and stand-up paddle boarding. Don’t miss the guided full moon kayak tour, which explores the saltmarsh. (843) 686-6996 or outsidehiltonhead.com.

Everyone likes a dance party. The dancers dance and the non-dancers stand to the side watching, observing, dreaming, and wishing. “Dancing with the Stars” is popular because it allows amateur dancers to experience professional dancing. But this notion does not just hold true to dancing; it applies across many sports, including golf.

Better players often are gracious and understand your skill level and what your emotions, frustrations are going through. They are often very encourag-ing and will help you along. Mature golfers will even invite you back if you are teachable. But to play with experienced players, you must know golf etiquette. Here are some of the spoken and unspoken rules to know when you’re headed to the green:

Warm UpP Try to arrive 45 minutes before the tee time to warm up properly and allow for socializing. P Practice your way though the bag, beginning

with putting, then chipping, pitching, the short irons, longer irons, and then the woods.

First TeeP Be there early and control your heart rate with breathing and positive affirmations.P Make sure to place an identifying mark on

your ball and inform the other players the type and number ball you are playing.P Stand outside of the playing golfers’ peripheral

vision to avoid slow play.P Walk at a reasonable speed between shots.P Begin planning your next shot as you approach the ball by studying all the variables.P From the time you select your club until you

actually hit your shot, you should take no more than 30 to 45 seconds.P If you aren’t ready to play when it is your turn,

encourage one of your fellow players to play.

Maintaining the CourseP Replace your divots: Many courses often put

containers of a soil on their carts and tees. Simply fill in the divot with the mixture.P Bring a rake into the bunker with you, remem- bering that you should always enter the bunker

from the low side at a point nearest to the ball.P Do not walk on the steep face of a bunker.P After hitting your shot, rake the area you disturbed.P Repair any pitch marks or indentations caused

by the ball hitting the green, using a tee, knife, key, or repair tool.

On the GreenP Don’t step on your fellow players’ putting lines

(the imaginary line that connects the ball to the hole).P If your ball is on a player’s line, volunteer to mark the ball.P Stand where you will not distract and don’t move or talk while they are in their pre-shot routine.P Hold the flagstick at arm’s length so the flag

doesn’t flutter in the breeze, and make sure your shadow doesn’t fall across the hole or line.P If you lay down the flagstick, do it gently to

prevent doing any damage to the green.P As everyone is putting out, pick up others players equipment to save the group time.P Displays of frustration are one thing, but outbursts

of temper are quite another. Yelling, throwing clubs and making a fool of yourself is unacceptable.

The End of the RoundP Shake hands with your fellow players, congratu- late, console, and thank them for their company,

because at the end of the day, the great pleasure of the game is the time you get to spend with your friends.

RULES FOR THE ROAD:Please obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws.

Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedes trians and other users.

Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles.

Please do not ride on roads where a pathway is available.

Please ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists.

WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you.

Please yield to pedestrians. When resting or stopped, please move off the pathway.

Most sections of the pathways are not illuminated. If you must bike at night, please wear light-colored clothing or carry a flash light. Bicycles must have a red rear reflector and a headlight when biking at night.

When approaching slower pathway users from behind, please sound your warning device, or call out, “Passing on your left.” Always pass on the left.

Bicyclists should always wear a helmet, especially children 12 and under.

Make eye contact and use hand signals. Assume other bicyclists and motorists don’t see you. Hand signals tell motorists and other path users what you intend to do and will ensure everyone’s safe enjoyment of the pathways.

Be courteous, alert and predictable.

At low tide, the Island’s 12 miles of beaches are ideal for biking. Public beaches are indicated on the Island

Events’ Island Map.

Our map also shows the existing public pathways. Many kiosks are located

along the pathways with an Island-wide map on one side, and a localized map of

the area on the other.
