It’s that time of year, right before Hilton
Head’s beaches are brimming with people and the island gets back to its busy bustling self. It’s the per-fect time to adventure out on the salty waters in a
kayak and explore this special spot in the Lowcountry, where dol-phins play in the creeks and deer disappear into the woods after saying hello.
As spring comes into full swing, the 47th RBC Heritage at Harbour Town Golf Links starts bringing back some of the world’s best golfers in their tournament April 13-19. Be sure to break out your best plaid, because this internationally televised PGA Tour event, which has been a tradition in Sea Pines since 1969, is known for its distinctive tartan plaid jacket.
But if you’re no golf aficionado, no worries, because April brings a bunch of special events to Hilton Head Island, with Gregg Russell concerts in Harbour Town, bar crawls at “The Triangle” and the opening of the new Shelter Cove Community Park by the Shelter Cove Towne Centre.
In this issue of Island Events, Doug Weaver recounts Matt Kuchar’s thrilling 2014 win at the RBC Heritage and tells golfers how they too can make a comeback from a bunker, while Jessie Renew of Outside Hilton Head lets guests in on a few of Hilton Head Island’s kayaking secrets. Also in this issue, Captain Miles Altman shares a first hand account of battling big bull reds and his theory behind their appearances as Georgene Mortimer of Island Winery explains the difference between Cabernet and Merlot.
Right now is the perfect time to get out, enjoy Hilton Head Island’s beauty and do a little exploring. Whether it’s by bike, kayak, paddle board or boat, you won’t want to miss out. Our boot-shaped island has some of the best activities, from parasailing and jet skiing to helicopter tours and water jetpacks, along with amazing tennis facilities, world-class golf and an assortment of award-winning restaurants.
We hope all of our listings are helpful in guiding you to some of the very best that the island has to offer. As always, the best of the Lowcountry and the Coastal Empire are just a click away at hiltonhead.com, hiltonheadisland.com, bluffton.com, savannah.com, stsimonsisland.com and beaufort.com. All of our websites are accessible via smartphone, so you can find the best shops, restaurants and activities no matter where you are. And all of our “priceless” publications can be viewed online 24/7.
Don’t forget to savor spring on Hilton Head Island and enjoy your time with friends and family out in our little lock of land in the Lowcountry. We wish you the best and hope you return soon!

If you’ve ever been given the task to bring the red wine to a dinner party, it makes perfect sense to stick to the basics: either a Merlot or a Cabernet Sauvignon. After all, they are the most ubiquitous red wines, available in all price ranges and are typically pretty reliable. But when it comes to taste, what makes them different? Well, let’s explore!
Both Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon came about sometime during the 1600 and 1700s in the Bordeaux region of France. Since then, the two grapes have become the single two most popular red wine varieties in the world. Both were born from the same father variety, Cabernet Franc, so they do share many qualities.
However subtle the differences are between Merlot and Cabernet, they are important. Although both wines have an almost negligible amount of sugar, Merlot will taste sweeter. This is because Merlot has less tannin than Cabernet. Tannins are chemicals found naturally in the grape skin and since a Cabernet grape has a much thicker skin than a Merlot grape, it makes sense that Cabernet Sauvignon would contain more tannin.
Tannin creates the texture quality in a wine that makes it taste dry, and have astringent and bitter notes, which also contribute to the complexity of a wine. Since Cabernet has more tannin than Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon tends to be bolder. Also, a high tannin wine is more age worthy, allowing the necessary time to develop complex and appealing flavor profiles. Higher tannin wines do have their downside however: they
can tend to be harsh and can overpower a more deli-cate meal. This is where Merlot shines.
Merlot tends to have a fruiti-er and softer taste. It doesn’t feel as dry on the palate so it tends to be smoother. The more delicate nature of Merlot often makes it easier to pair with foods. Although Cabernet tends to be bold-
er than Merlot, Merlot can be bold as well. If you are looking for a bold Merlot, look for grapes that were grown on a hillside. Merlot grapes, or any wine grape for that matter, pro-duced on a hillside are smaller and therefore have more tannin.
Another factor that greatly affects wine flavor is climate. Wine regions are generally split into two styles: cool climate and warm climate. Cool climate wines have more structure with a higher presence of tannin and earthy flavors. Cool cli-mate Merlot is sometimes mistaken for Cabernet Sauvignon. Classic examples of cool climate Merlot and Cabernet are from the Bordeaux region in France.
Warm climate wines are more about fruit flavors and less prevalent tannins, where warm climate Cabernet Sauvignon will sometimes be mistaken for Merlot. California, Australia and Argentina provide excellent examples of warm climate wines.
Since the supply of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are almost limitless, buy a few bottles and enjoy making comparisons yourself!

Visit the King Neptune Statue at Shelter Cove Harbour
The towering 12-foot bronze statue of Neptune, which doubles as a larger-than-life sundial, serves as an iconic symbol of Shelter Cove Harbour at Palmetto Dunes, welcoming visitors to the entrance of the popular waterfront dining and shopping location.
Designed and installed by sculptor Wayne Edwards, this much-loved statue serves as a tribute to Neptune, the Roman god of the sea. The King Neptune statue, which depicts a bearded Neptune holding his signature trident, serves as a popular centerpiece at Shelter Cove Harbour. The statue is strategically mounted on a circular base with numbers around the edge.
When the trident’s shadow falls across the 26-foot wide base, the numbers indicate the pre cise time. Hailed as the world’s largest figurative sundi al, the statue was origi nally cast at a foundry in Princeton, New Jersey and shipped by truck to Hilton Head Island in 1983. Engineers made meticulous measure-ments before the one-ton statue was installed,
ensuring that it would be located at the ideal angle to indicate the time.
They oriented the sculpture towards true south by aligning the constellation Ursa Major with the North Star.
An official dedication for the statue was held at Shelter Cove Harbour on August 11, 1983, attracting residents and visitors alike. Today, the King Neptune statue delights gen-erations of visitors to Shelter Cove Harbour, impressing adults and children of all ages. Stop by to see King Neptune in person and to expe rience a true Hilton Head Island icon.
This much-loved statue serves as a tribute to Neptune, the Roman god of the sea.

• One really rockin’ ring. All it takes is one look-at-me ring to make a style statement, c’mon. Don’t be afraid to go big. Flaunt it on your middle finger.
• A cool cuff. It can add instant elegance to a sporty or casual outfit. It’s also very sexy.
• Throw an arm party. Stack bangles or rigid bracelets up your wrist. The more the merrier. It’s OK to mix metals (silver, blackened silver, gold). It’s OK to mix designers. It’s a party!
• Ecclectic earrings. You’ll need some demure “button” earrings to wear with your bold necklaces. After all, you won’t want to steal thunder from your fab collar. But when your neck is bare, you want your earrings to carry the day. Go with big hoops or bold dangles. Even chandeliers.• Long layers. You can still wear your minimal pendant on a del-
icate 18” chain, but hang several longer necklaces around it. Stack them close together like a bib, or let them cascade down your front at different lengths. Have you ever tried wearing one of those long necklaces as a belt, or even wrapped around your wrist as a bracelet?
• Gold! It’s back at last! Tired of wearing nothing but sterling silver? Kick it up a notch! Add a touch of warm, lustrous gold. The price of gold has come down significantly from where it was a couple of years ago. Remember, you can trade in or recycle your outdated gold fashion jewelry for the newest styles.

Finally, we continually attend training and educational classes to sharpen our gemological and management skills. You can be assured that whatever you buy from Forsythe - no matter how big or small - will be in good taste and fashion forward. We want our “Forsythe family” to be stylin’!

Horoscope April 2015
ARIES Take the lead when it comes to a family matter, Aries. Loved ones don’t
know what to do and are looking to you for help. Don’t let them down. An old friend calls you unexpectedly. While you want to catch up with him or her, try to find out what this person really wants. This isn’t a social call.
TAURUS Don’t be inflexible when talking with a co-worker. He or she has
some very good ideas regarding a business problem. If you listen to what this person is say-ing, instead of just thinking of your own plans, you’ll realize that the two of you can work togeth-er to create the best solution. Leo plays a key role.
GEMINI Don’t be too quick to judge an acquaintance for something that he
or she says. You don’t know the entire situation. Try to find out all of the facts before criticizing this person. A close friend asks your advice about a personal problem. Be honest with him or her, even if it won’t be appreciated.
CANCER Don’t let work get to you this month, Cancer. Focus on the posi-
tive, not the negative. You’re making great strides and getting many tasks completed ahead of schedule. Don’t get caught up in office politics; just do your job. A loved one asks you for help. Do whatever you can for them.
LEO A family friend tries to upset you. Don’t give him or her the satisfaction.
You know that this person is just jealous of your recent accomplishments and wants to feel better by making you feel bad. Ignore what they tell you. Sagittarius plays an important role this month.
VIRGO You have a full schedule this month, Virgo, and several people are
counting on you to get things done. Don’t cave in to the pressure. Stay focused, and you'll get everything accomplished. Someone spe-cial has a surprise for you late in the month. Enjoy the surprise. You deserve it!
LIBRA While you’ve been putting it off, you finally have to make an important
financial decision this month. Don’t get nervous about it. Just look at all of the pros and cons and do what you think is best. Be open to the possibilities that lie before you. You’ll make the right decision. Scorpio plays an important role.
SCORPIO Take the initiative when it comes to a business opportunity early in
the month, Scorpio. This could be your big break; don’t let it slip away. Even though it will take up a lot of your free time, it will be worth it. Loved ones and close friends support your efforts. A new romantic attraction shouldn’t be ignored.
SAGITTARIUS Don’t let your temper get the best of you when you have a
disagreement with a loved one this month. This person is just trying to do what he or she thinks is best for you. You cannot fault them for that. Just explain what you want to do, and they are sure to understand and will support you.
CAPRICORN Don’t be shy when you meet an interesting person this month.
He or she is attracted to you. Just be yourself, and you’re sure to make a good impression. A close friend needs your help with a financial matter. Don’t get involved. There is more going on than he or she is telling you.
AQUARIUS Look before you leap when it comes to romance this month.
That attractive person who shows an interest in you is not as good a catch as he or she seems. Don’t get involved with him or her; it only will lead to heartache or worse. Pisces plays a key role in your life at this time.
PISCES You have a busy schedule this month, Pisces. So, don’t get distracted
by those around you. You have to work dili-gently to get things done on time. Don’t get discouraged; all of your hard work will be rewarded. The higher-ups will be impressed with your efforts.

The tradition continues April 13-19, when the 47th RBC Heritage returns to Hilton Head Island, uniting some of the world’s top golfers for a $5.9 million purse and the chance to don the distinctive tartan plaid blazer. The winner will walk away with more than $1 million and the coveted champion status at South Carolina’s only PGA TOUR event.
The 2015 RBC Heritage will kick off with the annual cannon firing on the Harbour Town Golf Links at Sea Pines, a legendary course originally designed by Pete Dye in consultation with Jack Nicklaus in 1969.
Originally the vision of late Sea Pines developer Charles Fraser, the inaugural Heritage Classic golf tournament teed off in 1969 as a way to establish Hilton Head Island as a household name. In its first year, Arnold Palmer clinched the title and $20,000 of the competition's $100,000 purse, and Hilton Head Island was well on its way to becoming a world-class resort destination. Over the past 40+ years, the tournament has grown from an innovative marketing strategy to one of the most beloved, most respected and most char itable stops on the PGA TOUR.
Since 1987, more than $28 million has been donated to charitable organizations to help people in need in South Carolina and Georgia. This year, more than 100,000 fans are expected to attend the RBC Heritage, with more than 60 million house-holds around the globe tuning in on The Golf
Channel, CBS Sports, Fox Sports Affiliates and XM Satellite Radio. The RBC Heritage is tra ditionally held the week following the Masters Golf Tournament and provides a warm, relaxed environment for players and their families to enjoy the best of Hilton Head Island.
Daily tickets and weeklong badges for this year’s tournament are currently on sale at rbcheritage.com or by calling the tournament office at (843) 671-2448.
DID YOU KNOW?Davis Love III is the tournament’s only five-time winner. Hale Irwin has won three times, while Johnny Miller, Hubert Green, Tom Watson, Fuzzy Zoeller, Payne Stewart, Stewart Cink and Boo Weekley have won two Heritage events.
Davis Love III holds the longest current streak of consecutive appearances at the RBC Heritage. The 2011 tournament marked his 26th start.
The oldest winner was Hale Irwin in 1994 at age 48. The youngest winner was Davis Love III in 1987 at age 23.
The lowest score recorded by a Heritage winner was 264 by Brian Gay in 2009.
The RBC Heritage purse is eight times greater than it was in 1988 and this year’s purse is greater than the combined payouts for the tournament’s first 19 years.

We are blessed here in the Lowcountry with some of the best redfishing. Technically the proper name is red drum, and older local anglers refer to them as spottail bass, but ever since Chef Paul Prudhomme introduced his “blackened redfish” recipe years ago, they became nationally known as redfish.
Large schools, numbering in the hundreds, roam skinny water seeking shelter from marauding dolphins in the cooler months, while large schools of the “bull” reds are found off the beaches near sandbars and in the sounds in the fall months. But spotty catch-es of the bulls happen all year long.
Reviewing my logs from last April, it appears we had a strong run of “bull” reds last spring. My charter logs revealed numerous trips where we scored double digit catches of 20- to 40-pound bulls throughout the month of April. Our local fishery for redfish is stronger than ever, thanks to management and stocking done by Al Stokes and his team at the mariculture center. I think the proliferation of these big schools are due in large to these efforts.
Whatever the reason, it’s hard to beat battling a big bull on light to medium spinning tackle. Long determined runs mark the strength and determination of these bruisers, with the aver-age battle lasting 15 to 20 minutes. Since fish over 23 inches must be released by law, these catches are for true sport only. The smaller ones eat better anyway.
One of the neat things I’ve noticed over the last few years is the increased number of big “bull” reds, the number of bigger predators has also increased. Last fall while fishing on a school, we had a hammerhead over 10 feet surface beside the boat. And Mary Lee, the massive white shark of Ocearch fame, didn’t winter at a local reef this past February as she has done the past two Februarys, but I suspect the abundance of “bull” reds may have kept her around.
Anyway, let’s hope history repeats itself this month; the bull red fishing will be spot on for a great time if it does. And while we are hop-ing, let’s also pull for the water temperature to warm up early this April and maybe, just maybe, the cobia will also come out early!
Capt. Miles Altman of Bayrunner Fishing Charters has more than 42 years experience fishing the waters surrounding Hilton Head Island. Don’t miss the new “Finatic” boat, which can accommodate up to 12 passen-gers and features a special three-hour shark/dolphin eco-tour trip. Contact Miles at (843) 290-6955 to book an unforgettable inshore or offshore charter fishing trip, departing from Shelter Cove Marina.

Cownose Ray Comes Out To Play
sHilton Head is home to a number of vari-
etal species of rays, one of the most visu-ally interesting being the cownose ray.
During the spring over the past few years, there has been an abundance of these rays washing up along our Hilton Head shores. This is likely being due to the storms and strong currents. While it is an unfortunate event, cownose rays are abundant throughout the Western North Atlantic.
Cownose rays, Rhinoptera bonasus, are part of the eagle ray family. Their scientific name comes from the Latin terms meaning “winged-nose bison,” a sentiment to their appearance. These rays vary in size, growing from one foot to four feet across. Their upper bodies are dark brown, while their underbellies range from creamy white to yellow, but they’re most noted for their short snout and concave forehead, which resembles a cow. Their tail is twice as long as their body and contains a venomous barb for self-defense. When swimming close to the surface, these rays’ wing tips will stick out of the water, resembling dorsal fins on sharks.
These rays are abundant from Maine, all the way to Brazil. They make great migrations up to two times a year. The spring finds them moving northward for warm summer waters, while the fall shifts their movements back south. A number choose to live in our South Carolina waters year-round. They are pelagic creatures, spend-ing most of their time swimming in the water col-umn. Feeding behaviors lead them to the bottom of sandy or muddy coastal waters. They primari-ly eat bivalves – clams, mussels and oysters. They have sharp teeth that break apart the shell and stomachs that are able to digest the soft body tissue and send the shell refuse out of their gills. When looking for prey, cownose rays use
electroreceptive locators, sending electric waves into the sand to see if disturbances reflect off of them. Once the buried prey is found, the rays will start a stirring motion with their wings, suck-ing and venting water and sediment through their gills. This process moves the sediment out of the steep sided cavity and away from the prey.
Reproduction can occur any time between May and October. Cownose rays take a long time to mature, males usually at six years and females all the way up to eight years. Once fertile, females on average produce one young, once a year. Females will develop an egg inside of their body that will gestate for up to twelve months. The eggs will develop and then hatch within the female in an ovoviviparous reproduction cycle. The young are born live and come out tail first.
Cobia, sandbar sharks and bull sharks prey upon cownose rays, but they are able to use their ven-omous stingers as a form of self-defense. It is very unlikely for a person to be stung by a cownose ray because they spend most of their time in the water column, instead of the bottom of our coastal areas.

84 ISLAND EVENTS APRIL 2015 hiltonhead.com
By Jessie Renew, Outside Hilton Head
The marshes surrounding Hilton Head are a lush wilderness, ideal for exploring by kayak. For thousands of years, small boats have been used to connect these islands for the purposes of trade, family and culture. The modern kayak continues the tradition of the personal watercraft in the Lowcountry. If you do one thing while visiting our Island, get out-side by kayak.
Our ideal weather and temperate climate make the Lowcountry the perfect place for beginners to learn to kayak. For your first time out, employ a knowledgeable guide to take you on a tour of the winding trails and open vistas of the salt marsh. Your guide will give you an overview of the plant and animal spe-cies in the area, as well as interpreting the tides and winds to give you the best possible trip.
If you already have some experience and would like to go out on your own, rent some kayaks and plan ahead. The tides in our area vary from seven to 10 feet, making it crucial that you know the tides before going kayak-ing. While paddling against the tide is not difficult, going against the strongest tide for the whole trip isn’t that enjoyable.
Look up the tides at saltwatertides.com. This site lets you pick from many local waterways. For your first time out, plan to split the low or high tide. Meaning, if you want to be out for two hours, leave an hour before low or high tide. For example: if the high tide at Broad Creek is 7:24 a.m. on April 1, you should leave at 6:24 a.m. and return at 8:24 a.m.
The time of high and low tide vary every day, so remember to check the tides!
The other thing to check is the weather. Technology has made this an easy task. Remember, weather predictions get more accurate the closer to the day of the predic-tion. Wind is a not always your friend. If it is blowing 10 knots or above expect it to be a bit difficult in one direction, 15 knots and above be cautious, for 20 knots and above you probably shouldn’t go out. Check the weather right before you go out to be sure there are no pop-up storms, which are com-mon in the spring and summer.
For the best experience renting kayaks and planning your kayak trip, visit the Outside Hilton Head store in Shelter Cove Plaza. Many of our knowledgeable staff are guides and have a wealth of knowledge about local paddles. Their first hand experience is worth hours of planning on your own. Get Outside by kayak this April!
For more than 30 years, Outside Hilton Head has provided personalized adventures for all ages, from kayak, fishing, nature and dolphin tours to kids’ camps, history excursions, family outings and stand-up paddle boarding. Don’t miss the guided full moon kayak tour, which explores the saltmarsh. (843) 686-6996 or outsidehiltonhead.com.
Kayaking is a true family sport. It’s fun and easy enough for children,
but also complex enough for serious enthusiasm.

Sand Trapsand
ComebacksBy Doug Weaver,
Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort
Matt Kuchar’s effervescent smile was shining after this shot from the sand trap went into the hole, bringing him victory in the 2014 RBC Heritage Classic.
The previous month had disappointment. In the final round of the 2014 Valero Texas Open, Kuchar held a share of the lead with nine holes to play, but bogeyed the 10th and 11th holes and finished tied for 4th. The next week, he had a four-stroke lead going into the final round at the Shell Houston Open, but lost a playoff to Matt Jones' 42-yard chip-in on the first extra hole, and then at the Masters Tournament, he was tied for the lead on Sunday until four-putting the fourth hole causing him to tie for 5th.
But one week later, Kuchar won for the seventh time on the PGA Tour with a one-stroke victory at Hilton Head Island’s RBC Heritage Classic. He shot a final-round 64, which included a sand trap shot into the hole for birdie from a green side bunker on the 18th hole. He jumped from four shots behind to claim victory.
But it’s not always easy to make that kind of shot from a bunker. But don’t worry, with these tips, you might just be able to get out of the bunker and back into the game with ease.
Draw a circle around the ball about the size of a pancake. In the set up, open the club face slightly and open your stance with the ball position forward.
Now look at the back of the circle, which is the desired place to impact the sand. Take a full swing like with any iron splashing the sand out of the circle. The ball will come out of the bunker on a cloud of sand.
Notice in the photograph of Matt Kuchar that his body is rotating, the weight is shifting to his forward foot, his right hand is under his left hand and the
sand is flying in the air. This shot went into the hole.
The journey and drama that golfers like Matt Kuchar experience out on the green will be brought to life on screen at Park Plaza Cinemas on April 15. At 6 p.m. and 8:20 p.m., guests can go see Seven Days in Utopia, starring Academy Award Winner Robert Duvall with NCIS’ Caleb Black, for FREE. This inspiring 99-minute movie, tells the story of a player who must make a comeback after losing a big game. Free admission and pop-corn. Reservations are suggested. Go to www.southcoastalfca.org/movie. You might even see or meet a real life PGA Tour Player while eating popcorn. The sequel to the movie and book is Johnny’s U.S. Open written by leading
Golf Coach Dr. David Cook.
Tips for enjoying the RBC Heritage Classic:
1. Leave early and stay late. There is a lot of fun other than golf going all day and into the night. 2. Plan on traffic slowing you down.3. Parking will be provided at the Coastal Discovery Museum and buses will take you to the golf course. 4. Bring cash for the delicious food provided by civic groups that return the money to the needs of the community. 5. Walk the course at least once and enjoy the natural beauty. Then find a stadium to sit in that offers shade and an excellent view of the action and rest your legs. 6. Wear a hat and have sunglasses. 7. The driving range is a must see spot, where you can watch 10 to 20 players preparing and practic-ing all the different shots at the same time.
A former PGA Touring pro, Doug Weaver is the Director of Instruction at the Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy. He conducts “Where Does the Power Come From?,” a free clinic and demonstration, every Monday at 4 p.m. (843) 785-1138, (800) 827-3006 or palmettodunes.com.

RULES FOR THE ROAD:Please obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws.
Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedes trians and other users.
Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles.
Please do not ride on roads where a pathway is available.
Please ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists.
WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you.
Please yield to pedestrians. When resting or stopped, please move off the pathway.
Most sections of the pathways are not illuminated. If you must bike at night, please wear light-colored clothing or carry a flash light. Bicycles must have a red rear reflector and a headlight when biking at night.
When approaching slower pathway users from behind, please sound your warning device, or call out, “Passing on your left.” Always pass on the left.
Bicyclists should always wear a helmet, especially children 12 and under.
Make eye contact and use hand signals. Assume other bicyclists and motorists don’t see you. Hand signals tell motorists and other path users what you intend to do and will ensure everyone’s safe enjoyment of the pathways.
Be courteous, alert and predictable.
At low tide, the Island’s 12 miles of beaches are ideal for biking. Public beaches are indicated on the Island
Events’ Island Map.
Our map also shows the existing public pathways. Many kiosks are located
along the pathways with an Island-wide map on one side, and a localized map of
the area on the other.
Recreational PathwaysGuide
The Town of Hilton Head Island provides nearly 60 miles of public path ways and nature trails for
the enjoy ment of pedes trians and cyclists.
