Preface

Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Ta’ala Wabarakatuh

First and foremost, praised and glad to Allah swt for His blessing and occasion that He gave me a chance and opportunity to finalize the errand. I am very thankful to Him for his ‘barakah’, wealth and health given to me during the completion of the task. He is such a great Creator who he gave His pity to whoever seeks well from him.

Next, I would like to portray tokens of appreciation to the dearest Islamic Study lecturer named Ustazah Mashitah binti Sabdin whom her know-how could not be doubted. She such a prodigious educator gave all of us acquaintance that we have been looking for before. She imparted us deeply on what we did not know before. She was so astounding and wonderful in fact she possessed a wonderful versatility in doing her job as a lecturer. She is the most compassionate person I have ever met in the University, generally. Perhaps, everything she gave was a ‘rahmat’ from the God, Allah saw for us to discover the beauty of Islam.

The most importantly, I am very thankful to everybody that supported me from every single ways in order to make a successful project being willed into reality. I am eager to show my enhancement in making progress on to this study to be a better person in the future.

Sincerely,MUHAMMAD SHAFIQ

The Speaker Background

Early life

He was born William Webb in 1972 in Oklahoma to a Christian family, including a grandfather who served as a preacher. At age 14, he lost interest in religion going through a self-described spiritual crisis. He also began engaging in delinquency by joining a local gang, was involved in a drive by shooting, and became a successful local Hip-Hop DJ and producer, making records with various artists. He’s a good DJ actually before he became an imam.

Education

After converting to Islam in 1992, Webb left his career as a DJ and studied at the University of Central Oklahoma, where he graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Education. He also studied privately under a Senegalese Sheikh, learning enough Islam and Arabic to become a community leader in Oklahoma City, where he was hired as Imam at The Islamic Society of Greater Oklahoma City. He simultaneously started teaching at Mercy School, an Islamic K-12 school in Oklahoma City. From 2004-2010, Suhaib Webb studied at the world’s preeminent Islamic institution of learning, Al-Azhar University, in the College of Shari`ah, in Cairo. During this time, after several years of studying the Arabic Language and the Islamic legal tradition, including Maliki law, he also served as the head of the English Translation Department at Dar al-Ifta al-Misriyyah.

Career

Suhaib Webb is an active member of the Muslim American Society and its youth department and has been so for the last ten years. It is through the Muslim American Society's scholarship program that he was sent to Egypt to attain fluency in Arabic and focus on Islamic studies. Webb frequently hosts lectures and posts articles offering Islamic perspectives on modern-day issues such as community involvement and social relevance.Apart from his studies, he frequently lectures in the United States and Malaysia, and records public lecture series on Islam and contemporary Muslim matters. After graduating from Al-Azhar, he moved to Santa Clara in the San Francisco Bay area, where he worked with the bay area Muslim American Society Office & Muslim Community Association. Unfortunately due to the lack of professionalism with his employers he has decided to part ways and accept a position in Boston. On December 1, 2011, Webb was inaugurated as the Imam of the Islamic Society of Boston's Cultural Center (ISBCC), the largest Islamic center in New England.

Reputation

Some UK government officials were quoted in a 2004 edition of The Guardian describing Webb as a "moderate leader" along with the likes of Hamza Yusuf and Amr Khaled.[10] Webb was named one of the 500 Most Influential Muslims in the World by the Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre in 2010. Webb's website, www.SuhaibWebb.com, was voted the best "Blog of the Year" by the 2009 Brass Crescent awards and his tweets won him the vote of "Best Muslim Tweeter" of 2010.Views & Accomplishments

Webb joined a trip of imams to Auschwitz in 2010, followed by a public statement to condemning Holocaust-denial and anti-Semitism.[14] He helped raise $20,000 for widows and children of firefighters killed in the 9/11 attack. He is a part of efforts to more effectively rebut militants and religious extremists and is an advocate for grassroots Muslim activism to promote social change. He advocates for an American-style Islam, one that is true to the Quran and Islamic law but that reflects this country's customs and culture.

Islamic Speech Review

We praise to Allah swt, we bewitch him and we invoke him to send some piece of blessing upon our master Muhammad saw, upon his companion, his community, his family and those who follow him until the end of time. Allah swt when he revealed to our prophet saw [ Quranic Verses], when Allah swt revealed this verse to our prophet which says the translation and this day “I have completed the religion for you, your religion for you and I have perfected my blessing upon you and I am pleased for you, God is pleased for you, Islam, submission as your faith. And when Allah swt said [Quranic Verse], Allah swt, he said that the prophet saw is the seal of the prophets. None will come after him with a prophetic message. And Allah swt, he prostrated this also into the Tin ( a kind of fruit ), [ Quranic Verse at-Tin], Allah swt swears by Tin, the fig here when scholars said it was talking about Saiyidina Nuh as, with Zaitun as Saiyidina Isa as, with [ Quranic Verse] is Moses and [ Quranic Verse] and this is Muhammad saw. As the habit of the Arabs was to swear by things but they make the people they are talking about and the last to him he mentioned [ Quranic Verse] the curiosity that we understand that after that he mentioned all of the prophets so we infer that he saw that is the seal

Page 9: Islamic Speech Review

of the prophets. What does that mean? As a great Tunisian scholar he was the last non-Egyptian to be Sheikh-ul Azhar, Sheikh Muhammad Haidur Hussain ra.

As he said that we understand from all of this that Islam is equipped to handle anything, any problem that faces humanity whether universally or in a particular pressure when it comes to the heart and religion or worship until the end of time.

The scholar quint and said that [ Quranic Verse], this Syaria’ is good for people, for places, for different cultures, for different realities, for different eras until the end of time. And as Muslim they should inspire us, we are an inspired community. Allah swt said [Quranic Verse ], you’re the best community and it means you were and will be the best community which was extracted for humanity, which has been brought out for humanity and we’ll see something really awesome that the subject of the verbs were hidden [ Quranic Verse] which means Allah brought you out for people and which also incredible if you lose this translation is [ Quranic Verse] which means you’re brought out for the benefit of people. Now, what beneficial for people is what inheritably good for them. So, the prophet saw as the seal of the prophet he’s ummah has said for fulfilled certain conditions becoming an ummah which is beneficial for people that takes us to the series of khutbah that we planned to give over the next few weeks on what thus Islam say to contemporary spiritual challenges and what I want invite you to do is to write on my Facebook wall, “I think one of the best spiritual challenges we face is this, let’s into act them mimbar is a place of recuperation, It has to be shared from the Imam with the community. And we talk about spiritual elements. This term was pointed by the Quran, Allah swt said :

“In their hearts there is disease, so Allah has increased their disease; and for them is a painful punishment because they [habitually] used to lie”. And this is actually in the form of comparison and rhetoric. Actually, means “In their hearts is hypocrisy, but instead of saying hypocrisy, Allah swt said a sickness because the sickness was just to weaken the physical body and its ability to function properly. Hypocrisy is the illness that we can’t, the spiritual reality and its ability to function with Allah swt, engaging the relationship with Allah swt. Shiekh-ul Islam Ibnu Tarmiya ra, He said in his important essay on the heart, He said just as the body becomes ill and need treatments and the reason’s that this becomes important to us here as I menation in the second khutbah when I talked about the first challenge that we have spiritually in the transformation of the world is that people is looking for guidance, not everyone but lots of people are. And Islam offers this

Surah Al-Baqarah

Page 10: Islamic Speech Review

spiritual gps between the radicalization of certain cults like Jim Jones or David Koresh and the other side we have absolute neglects ignores between the teachings of the prophet, the teachings that resonate in the hearts.

And Allah swt in the Quran, he shows that the important of this and the end of the first part of the Quran we see the supplication of Saidina Ibrahim. Allah swt said [ Quranic Verse], Allah swt shows Saidina Ibrahim and his son, Ismail. We learnt something from this usul Fiqh that if an action is done by a prophet and the action was not altered or obligated by our prophet, the note is that it becomes of our Sunnan, part of our religious tradition thus supplication form time to time with your son, father is an established prophetic tradition. Saidina Ibrahim supplicated with Ismail nd also it is the lead for those who make do’a ( Islamic prayer ), in group is something we count as encouraged. [ Quranic verse], so when we stand that sometimes father and imagined if you got your son and said “Let’s make doa ( Islamic prayer) for you. [ Doa recitation ]. Imagine the power that you have with your son or you daughter if you go to your father and you grab him and say “I want to make doa ( Islamic prayer ). What dad? It’s for you. Let’s make doa ( Islamic prayer ) and your son baa..baa..my father make doa ( islamic prayer ) for me today so and when goes to school and the girl says “Hey, Abdullah. Watch you Twitter, Abdullah will going to have a doa ( Islamic prayer ) with him” and said good for you. “Dad make doa (Islamic prayer ) for me today. And vice versa, your daughter when go out remembered Mom and Daddy made doa ( Islamic prayer ) to me this morning to give me some bets. Masha Allah. But they made those supplications, what did they said “Send the messenger, and we can talk about well forever”. But it’s a grow from messenger, it’s like something we extracted from messenger and ready for this messenger and let he teaches them over time who recites those verses to him. And he would teach them and explain to them the book, Al-kitab, meaning the Quran and wisdom. Imam Syafie said the wisdom is sunnah, and the word hikmah is actually form the word Arabic and it means to stop something. [ Arabic verse ], it is a classic word to explain the word hikmah and means to stop. And the reason’s called hikmah is because it is to stop the person to be ignorance, form being too wild and sometimes we heard many said “I’m not a human being” and you’re right, you’re not. So, the prophet comes and brings what the teaching of the sense of humanity and keeps us from ignorance. And we purify them and said what is incredible. We constantly teach them the explanation of the Book because the prophet saw, his taqlim is mustami’, his teaching to us is a constant. He passes away but till now he’s still teaching us to the agencies of his beautiful sunnah. So, what is Ibrahim and Ismail said is to constantly teach them and we understand that the important of knowledge, the important of understanding of any knowledge, to seek knowledge, to utilize the resources that refine in front of you and right, to learn about the al-wahy ( the revelations ). Because, the revelation we talk about it, the resources of life, wal-hikmah, and to constantly teach and explain them the hikmah and to constantly purify them and an incredibly important because it’s constantly happening, people are constantly reading what the prophet said, studying the life of the prophet saw, and their moved, they transformed. Now, the answer of this supplication when they asked recite your verses to them, teach them the Book of wisdom and purify them that it is the order of supplication form Saidina Ibrahim and his son, Ismail. We find the answer of you pledges his daughter and the beginning of second part of the Quran, the second page at the bottom, [ Quranic verse ], Allah said and us, we sent to you a prophet from among of

Page 11: Islamic Speech Review

yourselves, we understand from that, the importance of the doa, the muslim activist, being either form the culture of the people they preaching to, or understand the culture. The prophet saw was from the same hood of the people as the people where he sent to. Means, from yourself and he said “No”, from you. And this is actually incredible because Rasulullah saw was actually from them that the prophet is so close to you, man. He knows you; he knows everything about you, the point of this good forward that he’s actually from you. [ Quranic verse ], and Allah said that the prophet was so close to them and they are to themselves and we understand now speaking of language of understanding to the people cultures’ reality because Allah said from among of yourselves. He was reciting the verses to you, but he will see the change up, the order of the requested Ibrahim and his son is changed from recite the verses to them, purify them to read the verses to you and the number two comes, to purify you. And Ibrahim supplication was number three but at the answer given by our Lord, swt, purification moved apart from them but Allah swt changed the order number two becomes the Tazkiyyah, and number three becomes ta’lim. So, our scholar told us that we understand you, the important the hearts to be cleaned and for our hearts to be ready for the revelations. Imam An-nawawi, ra, he said that [Arabic verse], prepare you heart for revelations like the farmer prepare the land for granting. Prepare it. And the prophet saw in one hadith, the hadith from Nu’man Ibnu Basyir ra, he said something absolutely incredible, the point of ills we see around us, it’s not a matter of circumstances when we see environment becomes corrupted, the hearts are corrupted. There is relationship between us and the environment that the spiritual reality takes ahead and the other thing takes ahead. The prophet saw said, [ Arabic verse], in the body the was a part of perishes, when the body sound, the whole will sound. When some were corrupted, the whole will be corrupted. And one of the teaching says [Arabic verse], in the community there are perishes, if it sounds and the whole community will sounds. Indeed, [Arabic verse], it is the heart, if the heart is sound, the person is sound. When the person is sound, the family is sound. If their family is sound, the community is sound and it spreads to everywhere around and that’s why the prophet saw said even the fishes in the sea would make doa (Islamic prayer) for the righteous people of knowledge. So, Islam today is one of the important that we have to really, really appreciate that is the power that Islam has to speak to the heart and is that the power is a honest and be used properly and we ask Allah swt for his pity because the Rasul saw said, when he heard it and he said “Stop, stop. We will bring you the brightness to the community if they fail to do what Allah swt [Arabic verse].

First sermon ends.

Second khutbah today, I plan to speak about trans-humanism. What is trans-humanism means? If you watch Twilight, you’ll know exactly what it means. If you listen to people like Jay-Z; forever young, May Allah protect us to replace Jay-Z with nur, then you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about. Trans-humanism, if you like a super friend, like the Ben 10, if you like Call of Duty 3, Buzz Kills, you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about. No..no..no.. I’m not talking about all those stuff are bad, don’t give me wrong. I will buzz kill you but what I’m saying is there’s a rhetoric that promote the premolar culture that human being can live forever. You can transcend the humanity and this is hiding by the fact that we’ve become closer to the celebrity that we’ve ever been before. But are we really closer to them? And that is one of the topics of the khutbah that

Page 12: Islamic Speech Review

will come to the future we talk about contemporary spiritual innerness meaning of connecting. Connections. How do we really define connections? Because we have connection between Jaziyyah and we have one connection which is Haqiqi. The connection with Allah is truthful. And the connection with this dunya ( world ) is temporary. Social Scientist have been somewhat admitting some nice studies over an institute in Stanford. Believe it or not that they talked about the birth of irresponsibility among generation Y. All these names and one of the reasons they said that we found the aspirant of irresponsibility is that people on this generation in particular have been solved upon to the idea on the trans-humanity that they going to live forever. That one day, you know we won’t die. And this is a very, very profound spiritual illness because it goes against first and foremost the basic principle of Islam. As articular by the Asha TV. Syariah, after establishing the worship of God alone, the main goal of Syariah is for people to oppose their vain desires. And trying to live forever is a vain desire. And it was mentioned in the Quran [Quranic verse], that they wish they can live for thousand years, [ Quranic verse], And the prophet saw, and he said a smart person is the one who live for death that they prepare on life in the way they have the sense of responsibility and that they would have their responsible fashion. Now, I plan to dress this next week for one reason because things happened in this community, this is a beautiful community and I thank to Allah that I’m here. And I have a flue for about a week and I would really been here. But one of the things tha happened this week is that every time I sat down and try to address the problem of trans-humanism and a non-muslim walked into my office. This Tuesday, I like to prepare the khutbah and I did it again, I sat down to prepare the khutbah, sister shows up. Noranda, not muslim named Noranda and she said something to me that should me brothers and sisters. She said the youth of America really guided, we need this. It’s like gps in me. And I said, wow, you came to see who? I sat down again to prepare the khutbah that the big word out success able trans-humanism actually a three or four. And I sat down in the office. Someone walks in, and I keep on the doors locked and it is a hiding there but there’s still guided her and what did she tells me that she is 19-years old and she said I want to submit to Allah. And I said wow, nineteen and I’m twenty one that she beat me and I’m jealous. Thirty minute later, another sister walks in. I want to know about Islam. Brother comes through last week and I want to know how to submit to God. So, before we began the series, I think it is important that we appreciate what we have. And one of the ways to appreciate what we have is to drawn experiences to those who don’t have it. Those who haven’t taste what you’ve tasted. Some of you were borned in the silver, crescent on mouth or in a white turban, white hijab. But there are others who are working hard honestly seeking what you already have. And if I understand that, I have something that the people want. I should value what I have and I should look after it properly. And Umar ra and he arced this and what he said how Islam will be restored and he said it will be restored by people who are borned as a Muslim that never tasted not the ever green on the other side. One a young person came to me and he said “And you are a non-muslim before, is there’s any green on the other side?” And I said the grass is green in the Jannah. But Umar ra said that Islam will last on those whom borned as a Muslim and never tasted the hardship of being away from God, being far from God and Islam will unraveled from them he said like a turbine that is unraveled. So, before we engaged in the series of important in temporary spiritual illnesses, let’s ask ourselves a very simple question. Do we appreciate what we have? Do we have the syukur (appreciations

Page 13: Islamic Speech Review

and glad) to Allah for just being Muslim? And that thing will come out through a lot of means. Number one is the love of worship. Number two is the love of the prophet. And that’s a whole khutbah. And number three is the serenity in the Book of Allah. And that’s why I’m very happy to see that all young gather here reading Quran and not to forget that the Quran is not for children only. And that’s nice to see that some of you were here every Friday night, Alhamdulillah. And number four is appreciating Muslim. And understanding the gravity of unity and understanding the important of that and seeking to be away from anything that will divide us. The one of the reasons why I become a Muslim is when I walked into a mosque; the black people I would ever see in my life were leading the prayer in Oklahoma. And I said wow, that is incredible and it is an African leader who leads the prayer. And the brother said he’s not African and he’s a Muslim. And I said wow I like the way he sees me anyway. I need this. And I stand in danger that Shaitan will come in between us messing up on a little issues. That’s the sign of syukur to Allah and appreciating fellow Muslims and now let’s their hearts become preserved and it’s include our wives, our husbands and our children. Those are the sign of appreciations. I give to take care of us and the rewards are based on the contents of the action. And last is being able to be inspired by Islam, American to speak to the country in the way they understand and to not worry about it. To speak to them in a way that resonate them. When I am giving khutbah in Temtibo, that one is Masha Allah, the one is big and good.

Positive Comment

From my own prospective overviewing, I am agreed with the particular Imam Suhaib Webb that he used to mention all the suitable evidences from the Quran and hadith. From all of apart, I would like to conclude that:

1. Imam Suhaib did mention the evidences from the Holy Quran and hadith to strengthen his argument during his sermon presentation.

2. He managed to pronounce the words of his speech very clearly and so make people easy and easier to understand what message he wanted to tell.

3. He has a strong and patient personalization throughout his emotion shown in the video that may please people who heard this respective speech.

4. He has a calm face that makes everyone whoever listens be pleased and relaxed. Without any doubt, they would manage to understand any single words from him.

5. He could stand his message throughout the world as he used an internationally acceptable language which is a simplified English language. He did speaking with the simplest word to make sure everybody even a 12-years old person to understand and for sure, he’s a good thinker.

6. He managed to make his word being easily translated or even transcripted into a simpler language or any language.

7. He makes a good performance when he speaks; make a good relationship with other and all in all he could withstand the pressure and some noise outside by his words. He could excite people’s attention to him.

8. He is the best and awesome.

Page 15: Islamic Speech Review

Negative Comments

People are often making mistakes but not by his willing. Same goes to Imam Suhaib Webb that could make mistaken during his speech. There are least mistaken I would like to mention which is:

1. He often repeated the same Quranic verses.2. He always uses the same word to strengthen his argument which is not good for a speech.3. He didn’t use full of his approaching to make people more excited to hear words from him.4. He did use a same intonation when he speaks. There’s no climax or point of interest when he speaks

all flat.

Page 16: Islamic Speech Review

Suggestions

When people are making speech, we would like to suggest something to enhance their respective speech to be more interesting. One of the ways is:

1. Make a beautiful speech script which may attract people either muslim or not2. Make use of all part of body part to make audiences to be more enthusiasms when they listen to the

speech.3. Make us of technology in giving speech to make it more interactive.4. Do make a way of getting closer to humanity by any other approaches that would sure an

unexpected acceptance from his follower and fellow.
