Early Life

Muslims believe that a child is born pure and free of sin

The ceremony that is performed after a child is born is called the ADHAN A.K.A… The call to prayer

The ADHAN/Prayer is whispered to the child in the RIGHT ear

In the left ear they whisper the IQAMAH… the command to rise and worship

The AQIQAH

It is a name giving ceremony that takes place 7 days after birth

Most pleasing names of God; Abdullah:servant of god

Abdur-rahman:servant of the merciful one

The AQIQAH continued

Ceremony starts with the father and elderly relative or a pious person reading from the Qur’an

Muslims are able to choose between a family name, one of Muhammads names or one of the 99 beautiful names that describe God

If one of the names of God is used the name must be preceded by ABD- As in the name ABDULLA

Male Circumcision=KHITAN, takes place in the hospital and in some countries at the age 3-4.

When the hair of the child is cut or shaved, it’s weight in silver is distributed to the poor

Marriage

It is a legally sanctioned union between man and woman

Once a match is found, the bride and groom make a contract with the various wishes about their relationship

At least 2 muslims must witness the marriage

Marriage Continued

The marriage is based on love and often parent s give advice to the children to pick a good spouse

Bride and groom have the last say in the marriage selections (NOT FORCED)

No Muslim officials need to be present for the signing of the contract, but they may choose to go to a Mosque

Marriage

Takes place in a Mosque or the Home with an IMAM or QADI who needs to read the Qu’ran and vowes

Ceremony is followed by a family celebration

Polygamy

When a person is married to more than one person at a time

It provides opportunity for widows to re-marry

Women don’t marry many men, men take many wives

Beneficial in a society where the number of men is limited

Muslims believed that it is a great sign of tolerance and understanding for a woman to agree to share her husband with other women

Qu’ran gives men permission to have up to 4 wives

A man must have permission from first wife to marry other women

Divorce

Last resort in Islam Most detestable in the eyes of God Marriage should not be forced if the

families being united cannot grow together

Qu’ran says you must try to work through issues before getting a divorce

Divorce can be initiated by 1 person

Death

Muslims hope they will reach paradise and attain the beautiful vision of God’s own countenance

Believe that the burial should take place on the day they die

During burial bystanders throw dirt into the grave and recite the Qu’ran

After burial there is a 3 day mourning period

When you die 2 angels visit you to question you about your life: Good deeds, bad deeds, your faith
