iron man 3 genre presentation
TRANSCRIPT
Genre Presentation
GENRE
The third film in Marvel Studio’s Iron Man franchise is officially the following
three genres:
• Action
• Adventure
• Sci-Fi
It could also be argued that this is part of a new superhero genre which, can
be classed as a hybrid of some of the previously mentioned genres
WHAT MAKES A SUPERHERO?
There are a number of classic conventions to a superhero movie that are very
often followed in this movie and others including:
• A costume personifying the hero, usually with a mask
to keep their identity a secret
• A love interest for the hero that will be put into danger
• A sidekick to help fight the enemy
• A villain that will generally be the
binary opposite to the hero
POSTER DECONSTRUCTION
• The first thing we are drawn into seeing on the poster is Robert Downey Jr (Tony Stark/Iron Man) holding Gwyneth Paltrow(Pepper Potts) protecting her from danger. This enforces the convention that the hero will be saving his love interest from danger.
• RDJ is wearing a beaten down Iron Man suit, this shows that there will be action in the movie as there must have been some to get the suit into the condition it is in. There is also quite a lot of red and orange shaded coloursused in the poster connoting danger and explosions, which can also be seen vaguely in the background
• Ben Kingsley’s character (The Mandarin) is located in the top right of the poster sat in a pose that shows him as the villain due to his empowering look and being above everybody else including the main character.
SCREENSHOT
• This screenshot is from one of the final parts of the movie that caused a
lot of hate towards the movie. It shows Gwyneth Paltrow once we see her
come out of a wreckage and save the day instead of the main male lead.
This breaks the conventions of the superhero genre as it empowers the
female lead and has her save the hero from a great threat.
SCREENSHOT
• This screenshot shows that the antagonist is separate from his superhero
identity but the ‘suit’ and persona are still a great part of his life. It also
shows the comical humor that is often found in superhero movies mostly
made from Marvel.
SCREENSHOT
• A common theme throughout many superhero movies is a sense of
patriotism. This will either be the hero showing love to their country or the
city they are fighting in. This screenshot shows that with the character
Iron Patriot showing his red white and blue colours.
