The New Humanitarian:Behind the new refugee surgeto the Greek islands

Since the EU and Turkey signed anagreement in March 2016 aimed at stoppingthe flow of asylum seekers and migrantsacross the Aegean, arrivals to the GreekIslands during the summer have ranged fromaround 2,000 to just under 5,000 people permonth. The spike in people trying to reachthe Greek islands also coincides with anincrease in the number of asylum seekersand migrants crossing into Turkey. ‘We’venoticed a general… increase in movementacross the country lately’, said Lanna Walsh,a spokesperson for the UN’s migrationagency, IOM, in Turkey.
