IOM IRAQ Iraq Crisis Response Highlights Violence and displacement continue in Iraqi northern governorates. 1,150 families displaced from within Ninewa are currently living in abandoned buildings, mosques, schools or with host families. Clashes between IS and Iraqi Security Forces in Baiji have displaced 50 families in Salah Al-Din. In Kirkuk, movement has been restricted due to attacks that left 25 dead and 109 injured on 23 August. Only those with Kirkuk identification can pass military checkpoints. The number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the southern governorates continues to grow, as 151 IDP families arrived in Missan, Thi Qar and Basra on 28 August. In Basra, internally displaced families are living in hotels, with relatives or in rented housing. Work on the IDP camp in Missan is ongoing. Local authorities intend to complete the facilities by 18 September. IOM is building the camp cooking and hygiene facilities. Children are especially vulnerable to outbreaks of disease and malnutrition, made worse by poor conditions and searing summer temperatures.
